MESSAGES

From humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. The 2015-2016 season brings winds of change to our Hockey Club with an entirely new coaching staff and a roster turnover that we have not experienced in years.

Despite the high turnover and cyclical nature of Major Junior Hockey our organization expects to make the playoffs every year and this year is no different. Thanks in part to the quality scouting and coaching we have made the playoffs all 17 years we have been in Cranbrook, all while finishing with a .500 or better record for a WHL record 16th consecutive seasons (both are the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on-ice success. This year’s team will be the youngest in franchise history, but our expectations for success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

ICE NOTES VS. TRI-CITYICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter tonight’s game with an 9-40-4-0 record (7-17-3-0 at home, 2-23-1-0 on the road, 3-4 in overtime, 0-0 in shootouts)…The ICE will finish with a record below the .500 mark for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign, ending a WHL record 16 year run of seasons with a .500 or better record (1999-2015)…After this evening’s action the ICE will wrap up their season-long five game home stand February 12 versus SPOKANE before visiting the CHIEFS February 13.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTLAST OUTING: Tri-City defeated Spokane 4-1 at Toyota Center. After a scoreless first period, Tyler Sandhu opened the scoring in the second for a 1-0 lead. Austyn Playfair followed up with a goal for a 2-0 advantage, and Sandhu scored his second of the game late in the period for a 3-0 lead after two periods. Beau McCue scored early in the third to push the edge to 4-0. Taylor Ross scored for the Chiefs six minutes into the third, but that is all Spokane was able to score as Tri-City earned the win. Evan Sarthou made 27 saves in the win while Tyson Verhelst stopped 35 shots in the loss.

LAST MEETING: Tonight marks the only meeting of the 2015-16 season between the Americans and Kootenay ICE. The two sides last faced each other December 7, 2014 in Kennewick with Tri-City coming away with a 5-4 victory. Defenseman Riley Hillis scored the deciding goal late in the second period while forwards Beau McCue and Parker Bowles each notched four points. Forward Tim Bozon scored twice for the ICE.
