STEP 1

Line the heart-shaped box with plasticwrap to protect it from water stains.

Rest the floral foam atop the box. Usingthe knife, carefully cut the foam so that itfits inside the box (don’t worry aboutcutting it perfectly).

STEP 3

Place the foam on top of a container filledwith water. Let it sink to the bottom (ifyou push it down, air pockets may form,which prevents it from fully soaking).Remove the foam once it has soakedthrough evenly.

STEP 4

Place the foam back inside the box; thenuse the knife to slice off the top so it sitsflush with the box.

STEP 5

Start with a large flower, like a Patiencegarden rose, and use pruners or sharpscissors to cut the flower’s stem (leaving ahalf inch to an inch). Insert the flowerinto the foam at the heart’s bottom point. (Florist’s tip: Gently open the petals tomake flowers look fuller.)

Repeat with two more flowers, placingthem in the heart’s top curves.

STEP 7

Cut smaller flowers — we used astrantia— to a similar length, and place them inthe foam to fill in the heart. Slightly varyhow deep each stem goes to adddimension.

STEP 8

Cut a medium-size flower, like lacescabiosa, and add it to one side of theheart; do the same on the opposite side.Add one more variety, like ranunculus, tothe center.
