From the Pastor’s Desk

The Scriptures are filled with songs of various types, often called ‘canticles’. In the New Testament, three of

these canticles stand out, both because of their beauty, as well as for their significance in the story of our salvation. The

first is the “Canticle of Mary”, (Magnificat), spoken by the Blessed Mother on the occasion of her visit to her cousin Elizabeth. The second is the “Canticle of Zechariah” (Benedictus), spoken by the father of John the Baptist after John

was born. The third canticle is the “Canticle of Simeon” (Nunc Dimittus), found on the lips of Simeon in the temple

when Jesus was presented to the Lord, in fulfillment of the Law. (The Latin titles are taken from the first word(s) in the Latin version of these canticles.) Each of these canticles has become part of the official daily prayer of the Church, the

Liturgy of the Hours, with the Benedictus and Magnificat included in Morning and Evening Prayer, respectively, and

the Nunc Dimittis forming a part of Compline, or Night Prayer, the last prayer of the day.

On this Sunday’s Feast of the Presentation, we have proclaimed to us in the Gospel this third canticle, that of Simeon. It reads:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go

in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation,

which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples:

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and glory for your people Israel.” One can immediately see how fitting a prayer this is for the close of one’s day, prayed as it was by Simeon near

the close of his life. It is a prayer filled with hope and acceptance.

The hope is expressed in the last two lines, as Christ is named as the revelation of God’s love for all peoples. While born and raised a Jew in the midst of Israel, the salvation offered by Christ is offered to all the nations. Ac-

ceptance is expressed at the beginning of the prayer, as Simeon gazes upon the Christ Child. He had received a promise

that he would see this light before his death, and having seen it, he was satisfied that his life’s mission had been fulfilled. His last great act, of course, was to bear witness to Christ, as he recognizes in this child the glory of Israel and the light

to the nations.

In all of this we see our God revealed to us as a God of the promise. In the fulfillment of the promise to Sime-

on, God’s promise of salvation for all is likewise fulfilled. God is faithful — always.
