Hello Subafans,

Firstly let me apologise for the lack of report last month but I was movinghouse and did not realise I’d missed the magazine until it was too late andsecondly for my non attendance at the last meeting, the dreaded lurgy had ahold of me and didn’t let go for a week or so but I’m back on deck now ☺.

I hope you all had a good break over the Christmas /New Year period. Forthose of you who haven’t heard we have changed the constitution to allow anew class of membership to allow temporary members on day trips, so tripleaders take note please see the social director on how the system works. Ihope your details are correct for membership list as the new one is comingout soon. There is a special general meeting this month to decide on themembership fees for the future so if want have your two cents worth you needto attend.

Our constitution changes have finally been approved. Temporary membershipis now compulsory for all our visitors on any club activity.

Trip leaders will be issued with a trip pack, which will contain the trip sheet, temporary membership application forms and a receipt book. Trip leaderswill be required to hand a temporary membership form to all visiting drivers, who will then complete the form and hand it back with the $5 temporarymembership fee. Non driving visitors will also have to complete a temporarymembership form or be a passenger on the visiting driver’s temporarymembership application, but will not be required to pay the temporarymembership fee. The trip leader will issue the visiting driver with a receipt. After each trip the trip leader will return the trip pack and money to theSocial Director.

All trip leaders will be required to sign a copy of the “Club directions to tripleaders” instructions prior to their first trip as an acknowledgement of theirunderstanding and consent to this direction.

THE PENFOLD EXPERIMENTTHE PENFOLD EXPERIMENTTHE PENFOLD EXPERIMENTTHE PENFOLD EXPERIMENTTHE PENFOLD EXPERIMENTThe basis of this experiment was to see if I could convince other committeemembers to attend a committee meeting on the wrong night.

The committee meetings are on the second Monday night of the month, whichis usually in the second week of the month. In February, Tuesday is the firstof the month, so the second Monday of the month is in the 3 week of themonth.

So on the Sunday of the Ballina trip, I said to David Martin and ChristineBarry, I will see you tomorrow night at the committee meeting.

The experiment was successful, I was able to convince Dave, Christine andmy self that the committee meeting was on Monday night and we all turnedup.

March is the same, with Tuesday being the first of the month, I wonder whichcommittee members I can convince to turn up on the wrong night in March.

Trip Report Cooloola Rally 22.03.2003

...continued on page 8

Gaven, Kathy and I arrived late Friday afternoon to find an almost emptyGlastonbury Oval – only a few early arrivals suggesting that the mayhem of arally was about to destroy the peace and quiet of this normally sleepybackwater.

Auto John and Val were already well set up and just starting on their first dustsettlers for the evening. Rik was also set up, and had been for a while.

Over the following hours, the rest of the crew arrived. There was Big John withthe Tray-on on the back, Dave and Dwayne in the Brumbys, Scott with passengerMark in the red RX, Bryan in the “Beige Hornet” (newly returned to the Neilsenclan), Shannon and Travis in Shannon’s big Troopy, and Lionel and his brotherGlen in Lionel’s newly acquired (the previous day) SWB Troop Carrier.

Whilst a few of us were setting up the tents, others appeared to have relaxedand were enjoying a quiet chat. One of the competitor crews and their servicecrew arrived from Gladstone and set up next to our group. Their rally car lookedvery much like a Datsun 240K to everyone except Auto John, who wanted toknow why the rally team had stuck Datsun badges on a Mazda. He then inquiredabout the rego sticker on the rear quarter window, wanting to know why arally car had street registration. Hopefully, John discovered a few things thatnight about rallying.

Next morning after a leisurely breakfast, the club team set out into the forestto set up the stage. It was one that we were fairly familiar with, and withShane (who had arrived that morning) reading the set-up notes for Dave andGaven reading the set-up notes for me, the bunting was done and the roadblocks were in place before we knew it.

Gaven and I then had a few hours to spare waiting for the action to happen. Ineeded to set up my radio and, as is usually the case, I had problems sendingmessages back to base. I assumed (in this instance wrongly, due to what waslater discovered to be a badly set up repeater tower) that the fault lay withpoor positioning of the vehicle in a radio flat spot. So I decided to move the

Trip Report Cooloola Rally 22.03.2003Navara to the other side of the track to see if that helped. There was a slightdip and rise to negotiate, but I got one hell of a shock to see what had beendone to the bull bar by a tree root hiding just below the surface of the rise –the alloy had been pushed back a good 6 inches. I’ll remember this momentnext time I purchase a bull bar and opt for one made from steel.

Our paperwork finally arrived with the 00 car due to an oversight earlier in theday back at rally HQ, and then we went to work. Travis and Glen were doingthe paperwork – first time for each of them – whilst Gaven collected the roadbooks from the navigators and then returned them. I tried to look busy doingas little as possible (it goes with the territory as assistant stage commander). The first stage was run without too many dramas, but as darkness descendedon us, the sky became covered in some pretty mean looking storm clouds. Sowe ensured that the tarp was in place to keep the paperwork and radio dry.We were then treated to an exhibition of lightning that I have rarely been soprivileged to see – the storm was moving in from three different directions, and we were soon at its epicentre, with lightning flashes all around us. Throughthe whole the storm, we only managed to get 15 minutes or so of full-on rain.Others, I heard later, were not so lucky and were almost drowned out there.

For the second run through the stage, Travis and Glen swapped places withShannon and Lionel, who like their younger siblings had also not assisted at astop control. Shannon and Lionel also did the paperwork, but I got the feelingthat it wasn’t their cup of tea, so I don’t think they’ll be volunteering for stopcontrol duty again in the near future. During the running of the stage, Shannonwas visited by a particularly friendly large moth that wouldn’t leave him alone. We were also visited earlier in the day by an inquisitive young brown snakethat slithered towards us from underneath the Navara before being removedto a quieter place. With termite and “angry” ant nests also nearby to explore, who said that a day at a rally control is boring. It was all very educational, andmade us feel at one with our surroundings.

With the second run finished, we packed up and met up with the others ontheir way through the stage picking up the bunting, then headed back to the

oval for dinner and to wash the dust from our mouths. The oval was very muchalive, with service crews packing up for the night and teams heading home. Many of our crew had a quieter, more relaxed evening than the previous night– except Kathy, who comes alive when the rally hits town.

So in the morning with Kathy the only one of our crew still asleep, a few of theboys tried to rouse her with cold water and ice. The boys couldn’t believe howmuch she could withstand (those who know her well weren’t the least bitsurprised however), but persistence finally paid off and she eventually awokeas the rest of the crew were saying their good-byes for their forest trip throughthe local Gympie forests. Meanwhile, we packed up and had a leisurely triphome.

For those who are interested, George Shepheard in a Lancer won the rallyfrom Matt Van Tuinen, competing in his WRX for the first time, with PaulAndrews coming third in another Lancer.

The following phrases, frequently found in technical writings, are defined hereunderfor your edification and enlightenment.

“IT HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN…..” I haven’t bothered to look up the originalreferences.

“OF GREAT THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE…..” I find itinteresting.

“THREE OF THE SAMPLES WERE CHOSEN FOR DETAILED STUDY…..” The resultsof the others didn’t make sense and so I ignored them.

“ACCIDENTALLY STAINED DURING MOUNTING…..” Accidentally dropped on thefloor.

“HANDLED WITH EXTREME CARE THROUGHOUT THE EXPERIMENT…..” N o tdropped on the floor.

“TYPICAL RESULTS ARE SHOWN…..” The best results are shown.

“THESE RESULTS WILL BE REPORTED AT A LATER DATE…..” I might get aroundto this sometime.

“THE MOST RELIABLE RESULTS ARE THOSE OF JONES…..” Jones is a studentof mine.

“IT IS BELIEVED THAT…..” I think

“IT IS GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT…..” A couple of mates of mine think sotoo.

“IT MIGHT BE ARGUED THAT…..” I have such a good answer for this that I shallnow raise it.

“WHILST IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO PROVIDE DEFINITE ANSWERS TO THESEQUESTIONS…..” The experiment did not work out as planned, but I figured thatI could at least get some publicity out of it.

How’s this for dumb!Last summer, on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert an hour east ofBakersfield, California, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get their brand new 22ft boatgoing. It was very sluggish in almost every manoeuvre, no matter how muchpower was applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they putted toa nearby marina, thinking someone there could tell them what was wrong. Arough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. Theengine ran fine, the out drive went up and down, and the propeller was thecorrect size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water tocheck underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard.Remember... this is true... under the boat, still strapped securely in placewas ... the trailer.

It is run high in the French Alps on very narrow and twistymountain roads with the possibility of snow and ice. Even in these conditionsthe chosen tyres are usually slicks. After over coming early brake problemsSubaru’s number 1 driver Petter Solberg was running well in 3rd place until onthe last day on a slippery patch of snow and ice caught him out and he slid intoa stone wall and broke a front wheel off. His new team mate bitumen specialistStephane Sarrazin did not fare much better and managed to finish in 14th place.Positions – 1 Loeb Citroen, 2 Gardemeister Ford, 3 Panizzi Mitsubishi, 4 MartinPeugeot, 5 Gronholm Peugeot.Points – Loeb 10, Gardemeister 8, Panizzi 6, Martin 5, Gronholm4.Manufacturers – Citroen 10, Ford 10, Peugeot 9, Mitsubishi 9, Subaru 1.

WRC – Swedish Rally — Rd 2 – Depending on the weather conditions this isusually an all snow event, where the cars use special narrow studded tyres, and the drivers ‘lean’ on the road side snow banks to stay on the road. This yearthere was not as much snow as in past years. It was a great rally result forSubaru with Petter Solberg winning after a close battle with the Citroen andPeugeot drivers. New team mate Stephane Sarrazin managed to finish in 13th

place. One of the revelations of the rally was Queenslander Chris Atkinson debut. With only minimal practice in a World Rally Car and the first time driving onsnow.
