Insect Repellents

* Please note: I cannot vouch for either theeffectiveness or the safety of any of these products. These “recipes” and recommendations weregathered from various internet sources.

#1.Flea, Tick & Mosquito Repellent

Ingredients are full strength oils: Tea Tree Oil,Rosemary Oil, Sage Oil, Cedarwood Oil, PeppermintOil, Sweet Orange Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, CitronellaOil, Pine Needle Oil.(A health food store in your area sells these.)

Directions: Mix 2-3 drops each with 16 oz. Water in aspray bottle. Shake before each application andspray lightly over entire body.

Repels fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, flies and also makesthe van smell great.Spray dogs, and blankets. Use before going into theshow ring instead of those other sprays; no chemicalsmell spray. This stuff smells great, dogs look great, give additional shine to their coat.

OR

Mix 4-6 drops each with 32 oz of any naturalshampoo and you now have a natural fleashampoo,

#2.Avon “Skin So Soft” Bath oil is what some people usethrough summer to repel mozzies and flies.Mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle and spray iton the dog... (every second day seems beadequate). Make sure it is the OIL that you get as itsticks on the coat longer.“Cheap, very effective and the dogs do smelllovely!!!!”

#3.Some people recommend Aeroguard. Taking someto shows in summer for flies,

#4.Avon Skin so Soft also has a bug guard formula thatis in a spray on pump pack. Reported to be greatfor keeping the mozzies away.

#5.A cheap preparation you can make at home torepel flies & mozzies is:Equal quantities of Dettol, citronella & baby oil, shake well before using and – as with all suchpreparations - avoid the eyes,

#6.Some dog owners burn Mozzie coils in the kennels tokeep the mozzies out while the dogs sleep.

#7Some swear by wiping Citronella on their dog’scoat.

#8Rubbing lavender (just the leaves will do) onpeoples’ skin when outside at night, helps to keepthe pests away. Don't know if it would work for dals, but could be worth a try, and the dogs wouldsmell wonderful!!!

*** Please take care with eyes and other sensitiveareas!

Tsunami Appeal ShowOn Tuesday evening, 25th January a fund raising show

was held. There were 925 entries

The Tsunami show was set up at very short notice bya hardworking group of people to raise money tosupport the relief effort in Asia to help victims ofthe Tsunami. Entries were accepted as late as lastFriday (many entered online), and everything wasdonated including prizes, ribbons, and services ofJudges. There were also a number of very generousdonations from exhibitors and sponsors, resulting inapproximately $24,000 collected from the show.

Prizes for classes in group were in cash, with KeithIrwin (director of the RNSWCC) standing at the ringexits with a large bucket. Most exhibitors donatedtheir cash prizes back to the show. It was a verysuccessful show, although very late.

Remember William – last month’s Welfareupdate dog?Well – here is another update from hisfamily. He now has a new “baby sister”.

Committee member, Lee-Anne Osmond wrote:Hi Suzy, I have had another update on my last welfare DallyWilliam and his new little friend…Little Aggie is not a welfare Dally, this is just a goodletter and success story for William to have foundsuch a wonderful home.

Hi Lee-Anne,William now guards the house very well ,and has awoofer of a bark on him! It’s good to know he willalert us to anything going on outside. He is also quiteprotective of Aggie. I sometimes watch them througha window, and he always keeps at least one eye on her!

We took them to the beach a couple of weeks ago.Neither were particularly impressed!!! They weremore than happy to come home and curl up on thecouch together, as you will see by the photo. Theylove each other, and play endlessly... to the pointwhere they get put outside, because they are sorough!

Aggie is a great dog. She is learning fast, and I’mpretty proud of her! She gets to play with herbrother at puppy pre-school on Wednesday nights. Itsso cute to see these 2 spotty little devils chasingeach other around the room...its almost as if theyremember each other. She is quite a bit bigger thanhim though - weighing in at 10.6 kgs already! When allthe other pups are called to sit and drop, Aggie isused as an example of how important body language iswhen training a dog. I wiggle a finger at her to come, then hold my hand out like a stop signal to sit, andthen make her drop by dropping my hand to theground. She does it as well as, if not better than, allthe others. If I didn’t tell people, no one would knowshe couldn’t hear. I have actually found her to be an

easy dog to train; whether it be simply because she isa good pup, or maybe because she can’t hear anydistractions, I don’t know...

Hope you enjoy the photos. Thought you would like tosee how cute my baby is! She certainly attracts a lotof attention!

Talk to you soon

Hi Marilyn

Lucy's latest report: the cough has stopped - thankGod! - several nights of interrupted sleep but shehasn't coughed now for at least four days so I amconsidering some socialisation at dog school tomorrow.

Diet going o.k. - v.difficult to weigh her on homescales - me first and then clutching her (big load) andtrying to read the figures but think she is now about28.5. Feeding regime is: breakfast: handful of dryfood with spoonful of non-fat yoghurt, dinner ishandful of dry food, handful of raw meat (topsidemince or gravy beef) and two spoonfuls of mashedvege (potato, carrot, pumpkin, zucchini). Occasionallyhalf a lamb shank - i.e. one over four days. Have tomash vegies - she's not interested in it otherwise.

Behaviour/obedience etc.: If we are walking wherewe haven't been before she's a total bloodhound -nose to the ground and absolutely intense about thatactivity. Sit/drop/stay - mostly 'if I feel like it andif there's food involved'. 'Come' - ditto - i.e. off-leadwas perfectly happy to romp around with new friendliver coloured retriever (this of course after she wasbetter from cough) and come back to me - but whenI tried her in park without friend it was 'catch me ifyou can' - she really put it on - eyeball, paws downand a bark to come play - my calling to no avail -just increased the fun of the game - so I stopped, stood my ground - she did come back but I could see

Page 9: February 2005 - The Dalmatian Club of NSW Inc Spots Feb 05.pdf · A cheap preparation you can make ... Equal quantities of Dettol, citronella & baby oil, shake ... Ch Pampard Paris

she was laughing at me.

She is quite happy to sleep in her bed in my room atnight but once she's done her grooming (6a.m. onthat's o.k.) and I get a foot out of the bed she's atthe front door. Other morning she got so fed up withmy pre-walk breakfast preparations that she wentback to bed!.

Has taken ownership of her territory - front doorgrowl, bark etc. with tail wagging but looks quitefearsome, fence boundaries crows, cats and foreignersbarked at - that's fine with me because I'm on myown.

Loves, loves, loves being inside but I am trying to berealistic - don't want to create a situation where sheexpects to be in all the time so apart from when ithas been cold and she was sick I'm trying to make it:walk 50 mins then breakfast and then outside for acouple of hours, inside for a bit of time on thecomputer, outside for time/domestic chores/shoppingetc,, afternoon walk half hour/45 mins etc. Afternoon is a time when she is quite happy to go outand spend some time in the garden.

Marilyn, I think its working out really well - howlucky I am - I was so fearful of going to shelters andrejecting some poor dog that needed a home and thenI got Lucy without even meeting her - how amazing - think its probably the breed - have perhaps startedto realise that some little things I thought werepeculiar to my Daisy are actually innate in the breed- but that doesn't make Daisy any the less special -she was unique and so is Lucy.

Oh by the way - Lucy can be a bit of a thief -understands 'out of the kitchen and on your bed' etc.but someone arrived and she had access to a benchtopwith salmon croquettes ready for cooking. I wentthrough the kitchen and found some stuff on the floor- thought I'd dropped it - told her to clean it up andof course she did. Some time later went to cook thecroquettes and one in particular was severelysquashed - realization occurred, loud voice 'Lucy' andvery big guilt reaction.

I have a friend coming down tomorrow with a digitalcamera so hoping to get a shot of Lucy to send toyou. Thanks so much for your help. Regards

Glenda and Lucy

Hello from Bill & Mary – Update on Domino(who was featured in November Newspots.)Great to hear from you. We would love to go along toDalmatian Day, whenever it is, so that you can seeDomino. I'm sure he has filled out a bit since you sawhim, but we don't really notice because we see him allthe time. His coat is in lovely condition at the

moment. He had a great day on Saturday. We walked him overto Bondi and had lunch; he was really good the wholetime we were eating, sitting there getting lots ofattention from passersby. Then as we were finishingour drinks he saw a beagle puppy getting into a carso decided he would go and check him out and takethe table with him!! (his lead was wrapped around thetable leg...) So like in a comedy the bottles wentflying as the table took off much to the amusementof all the other diners!! He slept soundly all eveningafter we got home....very chuffed with his big dayout.

Cheers Mary

Prue was a dog that club member Jill Atkinson inTamworth rehomed for us. Prue now lives inQueensland.

Prue and Dougal

Hi Andy Just thought you would like to see how madam isgetting on.

Christmas was an experience for all the family. Pruemanaged to open 4 lots of presents 3 with chocolatein them. She spent Xmas night eating the lollipopssecretly in the garden. We found the sticks andwrappers next day. She thinks playing with Dougal isjust great although I have concerns about how Dougalfeels about getting his legs and neck attacked severaltimes a day.

She is an escape artist; she climbs under fences, opens louvres and breaks them to get out. She evendecided to chew the lounge that was up against thelouvre (probably because it was preventing her fromgetting out).

Phoebe (cat) has been living in the laundry until lastweek when we decided that we should try and getthem together. All well while we are watching butturn your back and Prue has chased to cat up thewall and around the house.

Page 10: February 2005 - The Dalmatian Club of NSW Inc Spots Feb 05.pdf · A cheap preparation you can make ... Equal quantities of Dettol, citronella & baby oil, shake ... Ch Pampard Paris

Chickens - We have one baby chicken left - it is acomplete nervous wreck even putting food into thecage it goes mental - thanks Prue.

Rebel is Shannon's pet rat. Rebel runs down Shannon'sshirt and hides from Prue but she is not deterred bythis. She just stands and waits. Shannon tells her toget lost but not our Prue - she just waits inanticipation that the rat will show its head longenough for her to snatch it.

To look at her butter would not melt in her mouthand she can be very loving but isn’t that what theysaid about the big bad wolf.

Dougal is the perfect gentleman, Prue steals his boneout of his mouth and he just walks away. Dougal isnot fussed by her, even when she steals his bed hejust shakes his head and looks at me as if to say“what have we done?” but I am sure he would missthe terrorist if she went away.

I have been trying some of your instructions and Ifeel I have made a small progress. Prue is extremelysmart and if she does not want to play she hidesunder the bed. The only way through to her is foodbut even then I take my life in her mouth as far asmy fingers are concerned. So we go gently, gentlywith the instructions and the food.

Sandie

November - December 04 was a shocker for Welfarebut we managed to get through with a lot of timespent answering calls and spending time with peoplethat unfortunately had bought Dalmatians for all thewrong reasons. With quite a few of the owners wewere able to offer advice on how to manage theirparticular problem so a few dogs were able to staywith their owners.

January has continued to be just as busy, with acruelty case that seems to be well on his way torecovering from his traumatic time, to a 3 year old, very overweight bitch, 43 kilos that has no mannersand uses her size to get where she wants to go. Sofar she has taken out three doors at my place BUTthe good news is she has lost 3.5 kilos in 1 1/2weeks. Manners will follow. We also have a very nice 3 yearold Liver boy, that once again has very few mannersbut he is learning.

I’m not sure where I would be without the small bandof people that are willing to care for these animalsthat, through no fault of their own, end up in poundsand shelters. Without mentioning any names you knowwho you are and thank you.

DOG PARK ETIQUETTE

Dog owners are usually a very social bunch ofpeople and enjoy the (often daily) trip to thedog park. This can be a wonderful catch upwith like minded people, as well as a terrificsocial outing for your dog.

However, please remember:Your dog is YOUR responsibility theentire time that you are at the park.

To keep your doggy friends and to continue touse the facilities provided, there are some“unwritten” (until now!) laws of etiquette thatwe all should follow.

1. Upon arrival – do keep your dog on lead, sothat your dog moves quietly into the territorythat has already been claimed by earlier arrivalsto the park.Don’t just open the car door when you arrive atthe park and let your dog rush up to other dogs. Many dog fights are initiated due to thisthoughtlessness.

2. Pick up ALL your dog POO!If you make a habit of keeping your dog on leaduntil they have toileted, your dog will often bequicker in relieving himself, as he is released toplay when he is done. Just because he haspooped once does not mean he is finished and acareful eye must be kept on your dog at alltimes.Just because he has pooped in long grass doesnot mean you don’t pick it up!

3. Constantly keep your eye on your dog. –remember while you are on the park YOU areresponsible for your dog.

• Watch carefully as your dog socializes withother dogs and people. Also watch other dogs’body language.• It is NOT okay for your dog to chase anotherdog when in fact that dog is not playing but it isfrightened.• It is NOT okay for your dog to rush up andgreet people by jumping on them or barking.• It is NOT okay for your dog to rush up tosomeone who is walking their dog on lead. Thisperson may have this dog on lead because it hasan injury. It may be aggressive or frightened. This person is being responsible and so shouldyou.

4. Just because you are on a dog park it is NOTOKAY for your dog to PEE wherever it wantsto. People bring chairs, prams, rugs, Eskies, andother things to the park and YOU should havecontrol of your dog and be able to prevent himweeing on people’s property. Some dogs evenpee on people, so watch your dog!!!The children’s playground is not the place foryour dog to relieve itself.

5. Don’t allow your dog to steal other dog’stoys. Other owners come down to play withTHEIR dogs – so play with YOUR dog with YOURtoys.

6. Even though you like to catch up with otherowners, don’t stand and talk to them andneglect your dog. All of you can get someexercise by walking around and please changedirection occasionally !!!

• Many dog fights break out because owners arechatting and the dogs become territorial overtoys or their owners. This can build over time,so breaking the location of your group andcontinually moving can prevent this fromhappening.

7. Build a relationship with your dog whilst youare on the park.

Do some obedience training, train and practicesome tricks and play games with your dog. Thisis quality time and you’ll both benefit.

8. Unless invited, don’t allow your dog to becomethe “fielder” for the family that is playingcricket. It can disrupt a great game if theyhave to stop for ten minutes every time theyhave to retrieve the ball from your dog.

9. Don’t allow your dog out of “controldistance.” Having your dog off lead does notmean that your dog is not under your control. You should be able to call your dog at any givenmoment. Take your treats and practice many, many recalls and reward the dog for coming.

10. Keep your young dog or puppy on lead or ona long line until your dog knows the dogs thathe is going to mix with. Many older dogs do notlike young dogs and puppies and you don’t wanttheir first meetings to be negative ones.

YES - you are at a dog park but pleaseremember your etiquette !!!!
