DELIGHTS OF PAINTING HOME AND ABROADNew year brings new ideasand if you have thought oftrying a new interest thisyear, then look no furtherthan right on your doorstep. Duffield is a village of manyinterests and talents, but it isparticularly well known forits ‘artists colony’, with twoart clubs, and a gallery, aswell as societies and classesencouraging various artforms.Your chance to try your handat painting has arrived.Margaret Allton runs dailyclasses in the village hallwhilst her friend Wendy Taithas monthly day schoolsspecialising in flowers at herhome in DuffieldBoth of them are well knownartists, often exhibiting inDuffield gallery but alsomuch farther afield. In fact both artists equallylove to travel and have
recently been to Maine USA,China and France eitherteaching or painting. This year they are veryexcited about their teachingtrip to Dinan in Brittany.Arranged in association withTravel Whispers they havefound a lovely spot on thebanks of the river Rance inDinan.Old world charm iseverywhere. Picturesque 15th and 16thcentury half-timbered houseswith their pointed gables andwooden porches line cobbledstreets, all kinds oftraditional craft shops, alongwith a delightful selection ofcafes and restaurants providesome exciting subject matter.Dinan can claim, and withgreat justification, to be themost perfectly preservedmedieval town in Brittany. As their trip is by coach from
Duffield ,they say: ‘It will bewonderful to be able to takeall our clobber withoutworrying about weight andairports !!’
If you would like to jointhem, either in a class call(01332 842295 ) or on thetrip ( 01664 434590).

Dear Barrie and DianaThanks for coveringthis difficult subject ofEcclesbourne School inrecent editions. For many people in thevillage the proposalsfrom EcclesbourneSchool pose a realdilemma. We want to see sportsfacilities at the schoolimproved, but at whatcost?
Are the new facilitiesworth the loss for ever ofthe open space aroundMeadows School and theriverbank access? People are poorlyinformed about theproposals. Could you include a mapin your February editionshowing the extent ofthe land it is proposed to
build housing on, thelocation of access roadsand the position of thenew playing fields? Thiswould inform the debateand provide a reallyhelpful communityservice.Thanks.Yours sincerelyKevin Curley6 Cumberhills RoadDuffield01332 840357

HelloI wondered if you couldhelp answer a questionthat has been nagging myfamily, friends andneighbours thisChristmas?
The tree that was erectedon the corner ofWirksworth Road?Christmas Tree? We arereally not sure thisrepresents the village wellat all!!
I have never seen such apoor effort in the whole ofmy life, one string of lightsthrown across the top andits been left like that sincethe start of December. Thetree has been standingcrooked, but this isirrelevant compared to itsdecoration.
I know there is a creditcrunch going on, but whenvillages like Milford canmake their streets lookpretty and manage to havea lovely tree opposite theStrutt Arms, how can anaffluent village likeDuffield not afford a treefull of lights?
This is really puzzling usand i cannot count howmany people havecommented on how bad itlooks? Were the lights
stolen? Could the villagersnot have dug into their boxof spare decs and donatedany spare lights? This really is a terribleexcuse of a tree, can youshed any light? (more thanthe lights on our villagetree this year anyway)Warmest Regards
Helen
Dear HelenThe editor, being aware ofmy involvement with theerection of ChristmasTrees in Duffield for atleast 20 years, has askedme to respond to yourletter at the time ofpublication.First of all thank you foryour comments regardingthe decoration of the tree which were echoed byothers. The lights used thisyear were donated by aresident and were the thirddifferent set used onconsecutive years. In 2006 the string of multicoloured 25 watt bulbs thathad been used for manyyears was installed. Over the first night 15 bulbswere removed and smashedon the ground. These wereduly replaced for 8 more tobe smashed the followingnight. The lights were thenlifted up the tree out of easy
reach but the effect wasthen very disappointing. There was also a safetyissue as live lamp socketscould be left exposed. In 2007 four large nets oflow voltage bulbs werepurchased but these werenot easy to spread aroundthe tree even though theysurvived those withdestruction in mind. The overall effect was notideal, the lights again beingconcentrated towards thetop of the tree. When the lights used thisyear were offered it wasreported that they were veryeffective when used at aresidential site. With hindsight the treecould have been smaller andthere would certainly not beas much ambient light as onthe Corner. Even so thanks to those thathang around on the cornermost of the bulbs withinreach were broken ormissing which didn’t helpthe overall impression. The lovely tree at Milford isup on a bank that doesn’tencourage groups to gatherand apparently escapes theattention of those withmischief in mind. I thinkyou will find that the otherlights in Milford are part ofthe seasonal decorationserected by Belper TownCouncil.
Those involved withDuffield’s efforts havealready started consultationswith Amber Valley BoroughCouncil that erects manytrees around the Borough. One solution might be afence around the tree if it isdecided that we won’t bebeaten by the mindless few.Over the years we have onlyhad to pay for one big tree, the remainder having beenremoved from resident’sgardens at no cost to them.Unfortunately some treesgrow with a curve that leadsto a slight lean wheninstalled. The trees are far too heavyto lift to make adjustmentsonce they are in place. In summary Helen, we hearwhat you say but theproblem is not money, theDuffield CommunityAssociation with supportfrom Duffield ParishCouncil will continue tofund all the decorated treesthat are erected around thevillage. The problem iscertain residents and theirfriends that are not so proudof where they live as weare. We are determined notto let them win and willwelcome any furthersuggestions from you, yourfamily and neighbours.Yours sincerelyDerek CookHon. Secretary DCA

COUNCIL SETS IT PRECEPT
Following a meeting of the Parish Council on 13th January2009, members agreed to raise monies through the annualprecept. The amount to be raised for 2009/10 is £96,485. The Precept is the amount that is charged on your rates for theservices provided locally by the Parish Council. This rate amounts to a weekly charge of approximately £1.00for a band E properties, with lower band properties payingmuch less. The monies raised through the precept helps to provide fundingfor local amenities such as Eyes Meadow, Gray RecreationalGround and Duffield Cemetery, as well as the provision of aCemetery Superintendent, Village Warden and office staff todeal with your enquiries. Included on our portfolio of responsibility are four properties, three of which are listed buildings. In addition to these assets the Parish Council also undertakesclearance work on some local footpaths and maintains andprovides bus shelters, seats and litter bins around the village. Last year the Parish Council carried out a number of majorprojects including the refurbishment of the playground at GrayRecreational Ground, the resurfacing of the parking bay at theCemetery and demolition and tree work at Eyes Meadow. On a smaller scale, the bus shelter on Wirksworth Road wasrefurbished and sandbags and sand was purchased to help thevillage in times of flood. These are just some of the things we have been doing, and theParish Council continues to look forward to ensure the bestservice possible to the village. Going forward the Parish Council are already planning nextthe year projects. Car park improvements at Eyes Meadow, repairs to the wallat Gray Recreational Ground, and improvements and theexpansion of allotments at the cemetery are amongst the listof proposed projects for the Spring. As you can imagine, with so many projects and a very tightbudget the Council is continually looking at how it can bestutilise its funding. We endeavour to ensure that the contributions made by thevillage to its work are used as efficiently and effectively aspossible, with value for money a key driver.**************************************************

These are some topicalitems I have beeninformed about by theBelper & DistrictNeighbourhood WatchSupport Group and thepolice.
A Reminder: A recentincident in the thecounty concerned acaller claiming he wasfrom the water boardand needed to come in tochange the battery in thewater meter and thatthey should havereceived a letter toconfirm this prior toarrival. As always never allowanyone into your homeunless you are sure oftheir identity. If youhave any concerns donot hesitate to tell themto leave. A legitimatecaller will not mind.
A Warning: It has
been reported thatthere has been asignificant increase inburglaries as a result ofthe economic crisis. Everyone is feeling thepinch including burglarsand thieves! Please keepall doors and windowslocked even when youare inside.
Another Warning: Aman came over andoffered his services as apainter to a femaleputting petrol in her carand left his card. She said no, butaccepted his card out ofkindness and got in thecar. The man then gotinto a car driven byanother man. As the lady left theservice station, she sawthe men following herout of the station at thesame time. Almostimmediately, she started
to feel dizzy and couldnot catch her breath. She tried to open thewindow and realised thatthe odour was on herhand; the same handwhich accepted the cardfrom the man at theservice station. She then noticed themen were immediatelybehind her and she feltshe needed to dosomething. She drove into the firstdriveway and began tohonk her horn repeatedlyto ask for help. The mendrove away but the ladystill felt pretty bad forseveral minutes after shecould finally catch herbreath. Apparently, there was asubstance on the cardthat could have seriouslyinjured her. This drug isused by people whowish to incapacitate avictim in order to stealfrom or take advantageof them. This drug is four timesmore dangerous than thedate rape drug and istransferable on simplecards. So take heed andmake sure you don’taccept cards at any timewhen alone or from
someone on the streets. This also applies tothose making house callsand slipping you a cardwhen they offer theirservices.Police Non-Emergencytelephone numberchange: From 1stDecember 2008, thenumber for contactingDerbyshire policechanged to: 0345 1233333. This is to ensurecallers are not chargedexcessively whenmaking a call. The oldnumber will continue tobe operational for about2 years until people arefamiliar with the newnumber and then phasedout.
