WHAT DOES YOUR HERITAGE MEAN TO YOU?

Our local chapter in Canton is being recognized by the Pan‐Pontian Federation for being a front runner in public education of our heritage, culture and history of the Pontian Greeks.  CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PONTIAN SOCIETY “KOMNINOI” OF CANTON OHIO!!!! 

What does your heritage mean to you? Do you see it as a part of what makes you who you are, or is it just irrelevant history?  Although cultural / heritage is passed down from generation to generation, traditions, stories, along with music and other crafts can easily get lost over time. Whether it is a form of paying tribute to ancestors, celebrating your family’s traditions, or even curious discovery, every culture offers something to everyone! 

It is imperative that our local Canton club continues its works of educating not only our children and descendants but also the general public on our rich history.  Our story of survival will be lost if we do not continue to educate on our Pontian Greek history.  We urge you to help us by getting more involved as well as getting your children and grandchildren involved in our organization.  We recognize that everyone is busy these days.  We ask you to take a step back and ask yourself, "What does your Pontian Greek heritage mean to you?"  We are confident that you can find some time to support our club in its endeavors to keep not only our history alive but also our club that our parents and grandparents built for our behalf.  If we all work together as a team on this common goal we will no doubt be able to keep our story alive. 

This is why we need your help.  We are asking that parents and grandparents to encourage your children to become members of the club and to teach them the traditions that have been passed down to you.  The club is only as strong as its members.  The youth needs support and encouragement along with guidance.  The Pontian community is strong and beautiful though dwindling with today’s pressures.     

 Interested in earning $100.00? You could have your chance by reading one of the three following books: The Great Betrayal by Edward Hale Bierstadt, Paradise Lost by Giles Milton, and Not Even My Name by Thea Halo and then writing a literature review. The Pontian Club will be sponsoring this literature review contest that is open to all applicants between the ages of 13‐25. There will be a total of 3 $100.00 cash prizes (one for each book) that will be given.  We encourage non‐Pontians to consider participating in this contest. The requirements are as follows: 

∙ Read any one of the three books mentioned above ∙ Then write a 3‐5 page reflection paper  ∙ Included in the reflection paper should be how reading this book has  

                              impacted you from your own cultural perspective ∙ Also include what was most meaningful for you  ∙ In closing, respond to how this has inspired you to learn about your                     

                             own culture .

Η Πανποντιακή Ομοσπονδία Η.Π.Α ‐ ΚΑΝΑΔΑ έχει αναγνωρίσει τον σύλλογο Κομνηνοί του Οχαίο ότι είναι ο πρώτος σύλλογος για την επιμόρφωση της κληρονομιάς, κουλτούρας και ιστορίας των ελλήνων ποντίων. 

Τη σημαίνει η κληρονομιά σου για σένα; Σε κάνει αυτό που είσαι ή είναι μια απλή ιστορία; Αν και η 

κουλτούρα/κληρονομιά περνάει από γενιά σε γενιά, οι παραδόσεις, ιστορίες καθώς και η μουσική αλλά και άλλες δεξιοτεχνίες μπορούν εύκολα να χαθούν με την πάροδο του χρόνου.Είναι πολύ σημαντικό ο σύλλογος μας να συνεχίσει την δουλειά στην επιμόρφωση όχι μόνο των παιδιών μας αλλά και γενικά όλου του κόσμου 

για την πλούσια ιστορία μας. Η ιστορία της επιβίωσης μας θα χαθεί αν εμείς δεν συνεχίσουμε να επιμορφώνουμε για την ποντιακή ιστορία μας. 

Είμαστε πεπεισμένοι ότι θα βρείτε τον χρόνο να υποστηρίξετε τον σύλλογο μας και τις εκδηλώσεις οι οποίες όχι μόνο θα κρατήσουν την ιστορία ζωντανή αλλά και τον σύλλογό μας τον οποίο οι γονείς μας και οι παπούδες 

μας βοήθησαν να δημιουργηθεί για εμάς. 

Γι’αυτό όλοι μαζί πρέπει να δουλέψουμε με έναν κοινό σκοπό ώστε να κρατήσουμε χωρίς αμφιβολία την ιστορία μας ζωντανή.

Annual Dance – November 2008 We would like to thank those who were able to attend and support the Pontian Club’s Fall Dance this past November.  We personally thank the many men and women who put their time and effort into making it such a wonderful event.  Without the dedication of these volunteers, we would not have had an annual dance.  Thank you to Panayiota Jordanides, Panayiota Aslanides, Sophia Semertisidis, Helen Piperidis, Anna Karvounides, Panagiota Heropoulos, Elena Aslanides, Georgia Mullaney, and Betty Pierce.  Your volunteering, donations, and time were greatly appreciated!  And, of course, thank you to our wonderful musicians for without them we would have had no kefi, Kosta Sopiadis – lyra, Christos Poneris – Daouli, and Evangelos Poneris – DJ.  We also thank those of you who came from near and far to participate and support our night of culture, food, dance and friendship; Iakovos Papadopoulos, New York representative of the Pan‐Pontian Federation USA & Canada, Domna Fotiadis, New York, representative from the Pan‐Pontian Federation Youth Committee USA & Canada.

National News: Montreal, Canada | "The 1st Annual Youth Conference in Canada was a success". Those were the words spoken by Sophia Michealidis one of the event organizers. This was the first of what many believed was a new page in the Pontian community. The event drew hundreds of Pontians from North America to it's first ever hosted Youth conference. The focus of the event was to reach out to the youth through an educational and also entertaining manner. Attendees to Friday night's opening reception were treated to a contemporary photographic exhibition titled " The Black Sea Greeks" by Eleftherios Kostans of Philadelphia.

Saturday morning's events started with a series of lectures and award presentations that were highlighted by keynote speaker Thea Halo (author of Not Even My Name).

The afternoon was entirely focussed on the youth. Attendees from all over North America participated in workshops on various subjects including the history of the Pontic Lyra, Daoul and the clothing of Pontos. Musicians, teachers and various experts in their fields reached out to the youth by providing easy to follow talks and sample material on how to play the Pontic Lyra, and also the proper traditional dress of Pontos.

The event went through to Sunday and concluded with a theatrical reenactment of a traditonal Pontian wedding which filled the room to capacity. The Conference was extremely well attended thus giving the organizers much to look forward to at the next conference.

“Το 1ο Συνέδριο Εθνικής Αυτογνωσίας στο Μόντρεαλ του Καναδά σημείωσε μεγάλη επιτυχία”, δήλωσε η Δις. Σοφία Μιχαϊλίδου μια απο τις διοργανώτριες της εκδήλωσης αυτής.  Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη σελίδα από τις πολλες 

που θα ακολουθήσουν στην ποντιακή κοινότητα.  Η εκδήλωση υτή προσέλκυσε εκατοντάδες ποντίους από τη Βόρεια Αμερική στην πρώτη επίσημη διοργάνωση της νεολαίας που έχει οργανωθεί ποτέ.  Ο σκοπός του συνεδρίου ήταν να συσωρεύσει την νεολαία μέσω μορφωτικής και ψυχαγωγικής μεθόδου. 

Το Συνέδριο Εθνικής Αυτογνωσίας ξεκίνησε την Παρασκευή το βράδυ με εκδήλωση σύχρονης φωτογραφικής 

παρουσίασης με τίτλο “Η Μαύρη Θάλασσα των Ελλήνων” από τον φωτογράφο Ελευθέριο Κόνστανς από την Φιλαδέλφια της Πενσυλβάνιας. 

Το Σάββατο το πρωί οι εκδηλώσεις ξεκίνησαν με μια σειρά ομιλιών και παρουσιάσεις επάθλων με εντυπωσιακά στιγμιότυπα από την χαιρετιστήρια ομιλία της Θεία Χάλο (συγγραφέας του βιβλίου ¨Ούτε κάν το 

όνομά μου”). 

Το απόγευμα του σαββάτου ήταν αφιερωμένο στην νεολαία.  Νέοι από όλη την Βόρεια Αμερική παρευρέθηκαν και συμμετείχαν σε διάφορα εργαστήρια με ποικίλα θέματα όπως την ιστορία της ποντιακής λύρας, νταούλι καθώς και ενδυμασίες του πόντου.  Μουσικοί και δασκάλοι ειδικοί πάνω στον τομέα τους κατόρθωσαν να 

πλησιάσουν και να προσεγγίσουν την νεολαία, παρέχοντας τα μέσα και φθσικά ανοίγοντας νέα μονοπάτια για 

τους νέους με το ποντιακό στοιχείο μαθαίνοντας τους ποιά είναι τα παραδοσιακά όργανα και ποιά η ευπρεπής  παραδοσιακή ενδυμασία του πόντου μας. 

Η εκδήλωση ολοκληρώθηκε την Κυριακή με θεατρική παράσταση. Στην παράσταση αυτή συμμετείχαν παιδιά 

από τον σύλλογο Παναγία Σουμελά – Βοστώνη, Εύξεινος Πόντος – Μόντρεαλ, Παναγία Σουμελά – Τορόντο και Ποντιακή Εστία – Βοστώνη αναπαραστώντας έναν παραδοσιακό ποντιακό γάμο. Το αποτέλεσμα, πλήρης αίθουσα και η συγκίνηση του κενού απερίγραπτη. 

Black Sea (ancient Pontus Euxinus), inland sea, lying between southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. It is connected with the Aegean Sea by the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles. Romania, Bulgaria, and the European portion of Turkey bound it on the west. The northern and eastern shores are bordered by Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia; the entire southern shore is Turkish territory.

The Black Sea has a length of 1,200 km (750 mi) from east to west, a maximum width of 610 km (380 mi), and an area of 461,000 sq km (178,000 sq mi). The Crimean Peninsula projects into the Black Sea from the north, forming the shallow Sea of Azov on the east and the Karkinitskiy Gulf on the west. The former is almost entirely cut off from the Black Sea. The sea receives the drainage of a large part of central and eastern Europe through the Dnieper, Dniester, Southern Bug, and Danube rivers. It also receives waters from a considerable section of eastern European Russia, through the Don River (which flows into the Sea of Azov) and from the western Caucasus region through the Kuban’ (which also flows into the Sea of Azov), and a number of smaller rivers; and the Black Sea drains northern Asia Minor through the Çoruh (Chorokh), Yeşil Irmak, Kızılırmak, and Sakarya rivers. The floor of its single central basin lies 1,800 m (6,000 ft) below the surface; its greatest depth is 2,210 m (7,250 ft). Severe storms occur frequently on the sea, particularly during the winter season. The prevailing winter winds are from the north.

The Black Sea is abundantly stocked with valuable sturgeon and other fish. As an outlet for the products of Ukraine and adjoining republics, it is of special importance in regional commerce. The principal ports are Odesa (Odessa), Kherson, and Sevastopol' in Ukraine; P’ot’i and Bat’umi in Georgia; Novorossiysk in Russia; Constanţa in Romania; Burgas and Varna in Bulgaria; and Ereğli, Samsun, Sinop, and Trabzon in Turkey.

Navigation in the Black Sea began early. Many of the colonial and commercial activities of ancient Greece and Rome, and in later times of the Byzantine Empire, centered on it. For almost three centuries after

1453, when the Ottomans occupied Constantinople (present-day İstanbul), the modern capital and last stronghold of the Byzantine Empire, the sea was virtually closed to foreign commerce.

The Russian Empire began to challenge Ottoman supremacy in the Black Sea early in the 18th century. By the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1856, which ended the Crimean War, the sea was opened to the commerce of all nations and was neutralized. In 1870 Alexander II, emperor of Russia, repudiated the neutralization section of the Treaty of Paris and placed a naval force in the Black Sea. A conference of European powers, held in 1871, sanctioned this action, but reaffirmed the right of the Ottoman sultan to close the Dardanelles and the Bosporus to war vessels. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, the Russians gained

important rights for their Black Sea commerce. During World War I the Russian fleet in the Black Sea was active against the Ottoman Empire.

Illnesses and Bereavement: 

Recently, the Board changed the policy of sending memorial flowers. Instead, it has elected to donate $50 to Holy Trinity in the name of that deceased Pontian member.  Please notify a board member of any illnesses or passing’s.  A member will consist of paid members and family living in the same household.

κόσμο των πέντε ηπείρων και στον ιατρικό κόσμο. 

Farewell to the following members of the Pontian Greek Community.  Dr. Constantinos Hionides fell asleep in lord on September 8,2008.  Dr. Hionides was a great supporter of the Pontian culture.  He is well known for his publication, “Trapezus”.  The Pontian Society “Komninoi” is very grateful for his donations for the Scholarship Fund given in his name to families of Pontian decent.  The following is a poem spoken at his funeral.  May his memory be eternal.

Γενοκτονίαν γνώρισεν Άπο µικρόν παιδίνι, Ατός τον Κύριν έχασεν Μωρόν ασ’ κουνίνι. Τ’ ορµία και τ’ ορµόχειλα Όλα µοιρολογούνε, Ράχια και ραχιοκέφαλα Άτόναν τραγωδούνε.  

Ό καίρον λιβωµένος, Άµον Άητέντσ επέταξεν Σ’άσπρα φορεµένος. Ή Παναΐα Σουµελά Έσέν θα παραστέκει, Καί σήν Ορτούν την έµορφον, Έσέν θα φέρ’ και θέκει. Ποντιοµάνα Σουµελά Έγκάλιαν ανοί’ τρανόνι, Θα πέρ’ και πάει φέρ’ εσέν Σ’ Πόντου το γιαλόνι. Άν πάς άρ’ άµε ‘ς σο καλόν Μελίγαλαν η στράτα σ’, Άγγέλ’ να παραστέκ’ν σεν Και η καλέσσα η µάνα σ’. Gust Tarzan fell asleep in the Lord on December 19, 2008.  Gust was known to be one of the founding fathers of the Pontian Society ‘Komninoi”.  He was very active within the club and a constant encouragement to the community. May his memory be eternal. Nick Kelesidis fall asleep in the Lord on June 21, 2008.  Nick was a supporter of our efforts.  May his memory be eternal. Peter Athans fell asleep in the Lord on April 6, 2008.  Peter was a supporter of our efforts.  May his memory be eternal. Our condolences and prayers to all the families.

Ο Άγιος Χαράλαµπος

Ήταν ιερέας στη Μαγνησία της Μ. Ασίας. Η ζωή του ήταν µια συνεχής υπηρεσία αφοσίωσης στο Χριστό και αγάπης προς τον πλησίον. Όταν το 198 ο Σεπτίµιος Σεβήρος εξαπέλυσε διωγµό κατά των Χριστιανών, ο έπαρχος Λουκιανός έφερε µπροστά του το Χαράλαµπο και τον απείλησε ότι θα τον βασάνιζε πολύ σκληρά, για να αρνηθεί το Χριστό. Ο γέροντας ιερέας χαµογέλασε και απάντησε: «Εµείς οι χριστιανοί, είµαστε εξοικειωµένοι µε τους αγώνες και τους πολέµους, όπως οι γενναίοι στρατιώτες δεν επιθυµούν τον ήσυχο θάνατο στο κρεβάτι, αλλά τον δοξασµένο της µάχης. Σε µένα υπάρχουν τα γηρατειά, αλλά να µάθετε καλά ότι στους δικούς µας αγώνες το παν είναι η ψυχή, η αποφασιστικότητα, η αυταπάρνηση. Αυτά δεν πέφτουν µε την ηλικία, αλλά µένουν πάντοτε ανθηρά και νέα. Αµφιβάλλεις, έπαρχε; Δοκίµασε. Και θα δεις ότι µε τη χάρη του Κυρίου µου Ιησού Χριστού θα κουρασθούν οι ακµαίοι δήµιοί σου, χωρίς ο ιερέας Χαράλαµπος να ζητήσει την επιείκειά σου». Εκνευρισµένος από τα λόγια αυτά ο έπαρχος, διατάζει και τον γδέρνουν ζωντανό. Αυτός, όµως, αντί να σπαράζει από τον πόνο, δοξολογούσε το Θεό για την αντοχή που του έδινε. Τότε πολλοί δήµιοι, που έβλεπαν αυτό το θαύµα, πίστεψαν στο Χριστό. Φοβισµένος ο έπαρχος τον άφησε ελεύθερο. Αργότερα ο ίδιος ο Σέβηρος, µη µπορώντας να τα βγάλει πέρα µαζί του, τον αποκεφάλισε σε ηλικία 103 ετών. Απολυτίκιο « Ως στύλος ακλόνητος, της Εκκλησίας Χριστού, και λύχνος αείφωτος, της οικουµένης σοφέ, εδείχθης Χαράλαµπες,έλαµψας εν τω κόσµω, δια του µαρτυρίου, έλυσας και ειδώλων την σκοτόµαιναν µάκαρ, διο εν παρρησία Χριστώ πρέσβευε σωθήναι ηµάς. ». αλλο ελασκουντον ακαµισον κι’ αβρακωτον, η Παλασσα ενεστεναζεν κι’ ελεγεν:

−− Ντο ν’ εφταγ’ ατεν την φτωχειαν. Αµον τιζα εγριβωσεν απαν εµουν και ’κι αχπαεται. Ευλογηµεντσα! Δεβα µιαν πα ση Χοντραντων κι’ επεκει ’ς σ’ εµας! εµεισ παντα αδακα ειµες. Ουνταν θελτς’ ελα!.....
