The 2009 Reporter Profit andLoss Statement is in, and it is

much worse than last year. We hadan $8,244 loss in outside advertis-ing ($2,169 loss in 2008.) Our costsof production didn’t go up much(even though we switched to a bet-ter quality of paper and color pagesevery month,) the loss was all inadvertising. Our Boosters contrib-uted $2,540 in 2009 ($1,235 morethan last year)—thanks everyonefor helping us fight this cost battle. There were also other advertisingbenefactors that helped keep ourlosses down, thanks to them aswell.

I don’t think any units or clubsreceived commissions by getting adsfor the Reporter (don’t forget, there

can be a 25% commission for firstyear ads to your unit or club.)

We don’t expect members to goout and solicit advertising, just stayalert for possibilities. Give prospec-tive advertisers a Reporter and theReporter brochure (available in theoffice and on the Website <http://sahibshrine.org/reporter/>.)

I lamented that our membershiphad dropped below 1,700 in 2008,this year we are at 1,643! Check thereport on page 33. The Black Camelis not our main reason for loss ofmembership, it continues to be forreasons that we might be able toaddress, and the membership com-mittee is still going full-steam toattempt to find answers, pleasehelp them, if you can.

As we come up on Valentine’sDay, our thoughts turn to love

and romance, spending that daywith someone very special to us.But with these thoughts are we for-getting something or someone? Whatabout our neighbors and friends?

Perhaps there is more confu-sion and misunderstanding aboutChristian love than any otherteaching of the Bible. We all acceptthe premise that to love God andlove our neighbor as ourself is thecornerstone of our faith. In theol-ogy, Christian love is the greatestof the theological virtues and is anessential element in the Christianlife. For St. Paul, love is the great-est of spiritual gifts because itserves for the building up of thecommunity of the faithful. Love isthe solvent of all divisive forces, all individualism which threatensthe life of the one body. It is thebond of wholeness.

We have all been taught overthe years to believe that love meansbeing sweet and reasonable, show-ing gentleness and that anger ordisagreement should be denied. This is not true. Think of how many

times events in the Bible are at-tributed to the anger of God, butbecause he has always come backto comfort or support shows hiscontinuous love for us.

We as people of God must alsolet our feelings out. We cannot be-gin to love ourselves or anyone else(including God) unless we acceptourselves as who we really are.The heavy burden of guilt we carrybecause we can’t resolve the ten-sion between love as sweet andmeek and the real presence of an-ger and disagreement prevents usfrom being ourselves and lovingour neighbor and our God.

We know that the distortionsare there and they don’t fit our lifeas we want it to be. If we hang on tothese distortions, we are unable todiscover all that life has to offer. The place to begin is within our-selves, where we are and as we are.We must release the bonds of lovefrom the box we put it in to free usas persons and make it possible tolove all as God loves us. RememberGod loves us, not because we arelovable, but because it is his na-ture to do so.

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

We are now underway for 2010, here at Sahib. The new ritual for our installa-tion program was a great success, received wonderful reviews by the noblesthat attended. If you were not there you missed another special event atSahib.

If you were not at the Rededication Service on January 10, you missed a greatservice. Past Potentate, Rev. Dr. Bill Magill gave an outstanding sermon. Theservice was overflowing with nobles and their ladies. My thanks go theLegionettes and all their helpers for the great food that was presented at theservice.

Let us not forget our membership goals for 2010. We must keep our greatfraternity going. Please sign up that Master Mason that we all know is outthere, and missing great opportunities at our Shrine. Keep going to your BlueLodges. It does make a difference. When I go, I am received with enthusiasm. They really appreciate our working together and it helps the sidelines at BlueLodge. We must remember this is where it all started.

The Potentate’s Ball on February 6 will have some great visitors for yourFebruary Foray. We have received the following replies to this event: Imp. SirJack Jones, Imperial Potentate, will be here for the February 4 luncheon, theHillbilly Dinner and the Saturday Potentate’s Ball.

Imp. Sir George Mitchell, Deputy Imperial Potentate, will be here also for theabove dates.

Imp. Sir Gary Bergenske, Imperial Marshal, will be here for Saturday the 6th.Please come and let us all give these Imperial officers our Sahib Shrine grandaccolades.

Remember your Blue Lodge.

Yours in the Faith,

Don Vos, Potentate

Get your tickets early, and join in the festivities.

February 4-6 is our Annual Hospital Benefit Col-lection Days. We raise funds to help offset the cost oftransporting children to and from our Shriners Hos-pitals for Children. We need volunteers for this fund-raiser event. Contact Cliff Bloodsworth, HospitalBenefit Chairman, for more information.

Installations are over and the officers are workinghard toward another successful year. February is

another busy month, starting with Imperial Sir JackJones’ visit at our February 4 luncheon and thePotentate’s Ball on the sixth. Then Sunday is thePancake Breakfast and Super Bowl Party, with aCamel Herder’s Initiation. What a way to start themonth. Our Stated Meeting in February will be onSaturday, February 13, preceded by a Club and UnitHead meeting at 9:00 a.m. We will have severalvisitations by our northern brothers and sisters andwe finish February with the great Shrine Circus onFriday and Saturday the 26th and 27th. A new loca-

tion for the circus puts it right next door on CircusBoulevard, what more appropriate place for a circus.

Membership continues to be one of our focus points, along with fun and fellowship. There are a greatnumber of Masons who are not yet Shriners; all theyare waiting for is to be asked to join. Attend your BlueLodge and show your Shrine colors. Share your Shrineexperiences and invite them to join us.

Looking forward to March will be many opportuni-ties for Shriners to have fun and fellowship whileworking the ballpark and county fair. It will be an-other very busy month. Don’t be shy. Volunteer yourservices.

New Year—New Beginnings! What a finish toJanuary with all our activities, how fast time

goes by. February starts with Ill. Sir Don Vos’Potentate’s Ball and includes the visit of ImperialPotentate Jack Jones. This weekend will show all ofShrinedom the hospitality of Sahib.

It’s just great to see the attendance going up at ourweekly men’s luncheon. We certainly show everyonehow we support our events, with a large number atthe Shrine East/West Game in Orlando, at our Pan-cake breakfasts, and on and on.

After we catch our breath, we will have aValentine’s Day Dinner Dance and then the PubNight with the Pipes and Drums, which is always awonderful time. And then the Grand Masters willbegin their visits to Florida and Sahib. Could one ofthe reasons possibly be to ‘get out of the cold?” We arealso getting ready for the Great Sahib Shrine Circusat the end of the month. These will be the days for thekids, and aren’t we all kids at heart? So show up andsupport all these events, and HAVE FUN! Let thegood times roll!

Once again, we are enjoying the winter monthstogether with our sunbird friends participating

in our activities. We love their return! I want to thankimmediate Past President Larry Covins and his lovelyLady Ruth for their wonderful year just past, and nowwe look forward to try to accomplish as much as theydid for our club.

On a somber note, the Black Camel came into ourmidst and we lost Phil Burnstine, our Chief Ambas-sador at Sahib temple. He had a beautiful and well-attended service on December 10 2009.

We are tentatively planning our annual HospitalBenefit Days Collections at Publix stores on Febru-ary 10, 11 and 12.

On January 18, we celebrated our Baseball Ap-preciation dinner in honor of all our dedicated work-ers that assisted us last year. We are preparingagain for the Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Traininggames and concession stand operations beginning inMarch. We enjoy this event every year. It takes alarge workforce to accomplish this task. Therefore, let me ask all of your temple members if you may bethinking of joining us in this endeavor, please con-tact Gil Pierola at (941) 795-2818 and let us know ifyou desire to help us! It is a lot of fun!

January is usually a good time for us “Bikers” totool around the countryside in some great weather

that makes our northern brethren quite jealous. Well, not this January! Apparently way too many snow-birds shut a bunch of that arctic air in their car trunksand brought it down and released it into Florida, allat the same time.

Many of us braved that frigid air to attend theThunder by the Bay Biker Rally on January 10.

Temperatures were around 38 degrees when moststarted out at 10:30 a.m. that morning. Eric“Speedtriple” Bock and his Lady Leslie and my LadyBarbara “BBall” Hart and I donned every stitch ofclothing we had and rode out to sign up for the “scenicride.” On the way we met Bryan (Produce) Pullmanand his Lady Terri, who were headed downtown tosell booze wagon tickets in the cold. We slid by theShrine and met Theo (the Yeti) Vreuls, Dave (Jet

Speedtriple and I took the scenic ride up toNorth Longboat Key (we had to prove it could be done)and then rode into town to join the festivities. Therewe found a number of Motor Corps members sellingbooze wagon tickets. Speaking of BigAl, Mr. Dahlberg hastaken over the reinsfor our upcomingPoker Run and he isdoing a fabulous job!Mark your calendarsright now for March14. Some of you may have noticed some work beingdone around the motorcycle parking lot. After lots ofplanning, and with help and direction from the Divan(thanks, Illustrious Sirs Oscar and Don,) we finally

are working on expanding our motorcycle parkingarea. With over 40 members, it was time. This willalso give us a much larger seating area for our Cer-emonial Parades in the future. Please excuse ourmess while we are under construction. Also, pleaseobserve that this area is reserved for motorcycles andtrikes only. The pad is only 3” thick and will notsupport an automobile. Those that park an auto therewill be held responsible for any damage that occurs.

This month the Motor Corps will put on theirSpaghetti Dinner on February 21. Get your tickets

Sickness and distress: Randy Anderson is nowbeing treated for irregular heart rhythm and mustavoid all extra curricular activities. Paul Slopovskycontinues to receive good progress reports.

And as we go to press, Phyllis Copher emailed ourJanuary mystery Quotable Notable identity as Newt“Gengrich” (sic) who recently declared: “The Presi-dent came out for real change by saying that parentshave a right to know how their children’s schools areperforming and that they should have unlimited ac-cess to charter schools. It’s such a courageous position

for him to take—andso correct—that Iagreed to go aroundthe country to helphim make the case.”

Well, closeenough for Phyllis tobe declared winner, but Gingrich advisedthat since his lastname was not right,JD should pay fortheir breakfast, notour club!

Congratulations to Ill. Sir Don Vos the Sahib Po-tentate for 2010. We couldn’t think of a better

man to follow the high standards set by 2009 Poten-tate, Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier. Best of luck to the entirenew Divan. The Noblemen are looking forward toplaying for the Potentate’s Ball on February 6 whenIll. Sir Don will be properly honored.

Also, prior to the opening of the December StatedMeeting three Sahib bandsmen were presented withbeautiful plaques honoring their emeritus status forlong service to Sahib and their unit. They were NoblesEd Gremp, Andy Wright and Mike Ash. Thanks to Ill.Sir Oscar Cloutier and his Divan for the recognition.

The band has lost a great friend and fellow musi-cian to the Black Camel. Noble Fred Hetherington,Sahib organist and entertainer at the Thursday lun-cheons passed away in late December. President EdGremp was his regular bassist, and I was privilegedto join in on saxophone whenever possible. Fred wasa wonderful guy and will be sorely missed by all whowere lucky enough to know him.

The Noblemen Dance Band has also been honoredby Catholic Charities as the principal entertainmentfor their big fundraiser next April 10 at Michael’s onEast. The exposure this gives the Shriners to thehundreds of attendees should be of great benefit toSahib and its stature in the community. The TeaDances are drawing happy customers and will hope-fully survive the economic doldrums faced by every-

one. Noble Andy Wright is continuing his intensetreatment schedule. We all look forward to his futurereturn as Noblemen director. In the meantime, weare most fortunate to have Armond Olivero at thehelm.

Ill. Sir Jarrett Miller, PP, concert band director, has been working us hard in preparation for the 2010concert schedule that begins on February 18. It’sgreat to have our snowbirds back and filling themissing holes in our instrumentation.

This month’s bio features C. Arthur “Art” Litt-man, a valued Sahib bandsman and an alumnus ofseveral other Sahib Units and committees.

Noble Art Littman is a 54-year Mason and re-ceived his 50-year Shrine pin last year. Before comingto Sarasota and affiliating with Sahib, he belonged toNur Shriners in Wilmington, Delaware, Salaam inLivingston, New Jersey, and Boumi in Baltimore,Maryland.

A graduate of the Pennsylvania Military Academywith a BS in Business Administration, Art received aMasters Degree from the University of Delaware. Heserved as a career Navy officer, retiring as a Lt.Cmdr. after 27 years of active and reserve service. Heis a Certified Fundraising Executive and for 32 yearsserved as a fundraiser for various educational insti-tutions and other agencies. He still serves as a con-sultant in that capacity.

Art owns a campground and RV resort in Virginiaand is President of Littman Properties, LLC.

He became interested in music early in life, andwas a member of a music fraternity at Miami of OhioUniversity where he played drums. He led his owndance band from 1949-1952, and played drums atSalaam Shriners in New Jersey. After coming toSahib, he has been active in both the Banjo Band andlater, the Concert Band. In his “spare time,” he hasserved as president of the King Pins, the Banjo Bandand the Manatee Shrine Club. He also served in the

Aides, as Executive Aide, on the Finance Committee, and has become a valued recent addition to the SahibBand Board of Directors.

Lastly, Noble Art suffered a serious medical set-back many months ago. His fighting spirit has broughthim to a point of recovery that truly makes him a rolemodel for us all as we struggle with the perils ofaging. He is a courageous man and driven to give hisbest to every task. We are privileged to count him asa member of our fraternity, and, especially, of ourBand Unit.

Happy Valentine’s Day!Valentine’s Day isn’t just About couples and romance. It’s also about friends and sharing And letting the people you care aboutKnow how important they are in your life!

As I sit here writing this article I am gloatingabout how proud I am of the nobles of the Sahib

Chanters (it is now December 23, 2009.) I can’t helpbut be encouraged about our future. We are continu-ing to perform at temple events when we are asked todo so. We really need some younger voices and bodiesin order to perform in a more respectable manner. Inorder to get these younger men into our Chanters, wewill need to make our unit attractive, availableand interesting to them. Time will tell and, with thehelp of the Divan and others, we will survive.

We had the opportunity to perform at the temple, along with the Lady Song Birds, at the Sahib ShrineMemorial Service in November. We also had the

opportunity to lead the singing of Christmas Carolsfor the group attending the Ladies Christmas Lun-cheon on Thursday, December 17, and as of thiswriting, we are scheduled to sing at the Potentate’sRededication Service at St. Margaret’s EpiscopalChurch on January 10, 2010. These performances area wonderful time made possible through the kindnessof Lady Marian Cox as our accompanist and JerryGoacher as our director. We owe a great big “thankyou” to each of these great people who have steppedforward to help us keep going.

We have tried to do our best to support the activi-ties of our Sahib Shriners as well as the individualunit activities as we progress through another activeyear. Twenty-nine Chanter nobles and ladies enjoyedthe Sahib Unit Holiday Party on December 15. It wasa wonderful evening and greatly appreciated. Re-member, the success of one reflects upon the successof the whole and the success of the whole dependsupon the success of each unit and the support of allnobles. Our Divan can’t do it all so let’s get behind

arrows and causes the people to fall in love. Writinga love poem or love letter in this day is very typical onthis day, because in our busy life usually we missthese special moments. The first love letter was sentby the duke of Orleans. He sent it to his wife fromprison in the Tower of London. Most people spenddays choosing the right present for this day becauseit is very difficult to decide which is the best one for theperson who is very close to our heart. On this specialday, some of us prefer the comfort of our homes, prepar-ing dinner or watching an interesting movie but othersorganize a dinner out in a romantic restaurant. What-ever you decide, this should be the most romantic day inthe year. Prove and show your real, pure love to theperson you love and care most about and enjoy the day.

A pull-tab story - A good friend and supporter ofthe tab collection effort met a 5-year-old boy on hismorning rounds collecting pull-tabs from recyclingbins. That boy was fascinated by that prospect andexcitedly exclaimed that he would do the same in his

area. The story took quite a passionate turn in thatthis boy took all the tabs off the cans in the cup-board and the refrigerator at home in addition tothe ones collected from the bins. Somehow, thisyoungster went beyond the call of duty!

Remember, collect pull-tabs, support yourShrine and keep a child in your heart.

declining membership. Sickness and an aging mem-ber base add to our difficulties. Therefore, we areasking all that read these articles to consider joiningour organization. We certainly need the help. Past Potentate Bruce Steube, 33° and Inducting Mar-shal, Director Ed Firquin in presenting a new ritualin the temple.

This new temple Ritual was created after monthsof discussion with Ill. Sir Don Vos. Then following theIll. Potentate’s decree and motto for 2010 of “Fun,Fellowship and Family,” the script was written toreflect our Shrine heritage with fun, fellowship andfamily involvement.

It is hoped that this ritual was received well andwas interesting for the nobles, their ladies and friends

in attendance. There is no other ritual productionsuch as this in Shrinedom, again Sahib out in front ofthe pack. It is hoped that this ritual will continue inthe future at Sahib as we attempt to make thingsinteresting and different for the nobles of Sahib.

Again, the Ritual staff and unit will be lookingforward to the Ceremonials of 2010. If you have notattended a Ceremonial lately, please make a point tocome and enjoy our production. The nobles in the unitwork hard and have great fun in presenting thelessons to the novices. I encourage all nobles to getout and bring in those good men for Masonry andmembership in the Shrine.

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Bill Zurlo, [email protected]

All of my projects for 2009 have been completed;and seem to have had satisfactory results. The

last and most gratifying was our Children’s Christ-mas Party which drew about 250 children and adults. The Aides, Clowns, Oriental Band, Divan Ladies andNorth Port Shrine Club (donation of large number oftoys) are thanked by the Divan.

The membership project will be a continuing workin progress until we can at least stabilize our lossesagainst new membership and ascertain growth. Weare still actively pursuing new candidates and willcontinue to ask you to keep our Blue Lodges in mindand visit whenever possible.

Our elections are over and I thank all nobles whofelt I should attain the next level of High Priest andProphet and afford me the opportunity to be a repre-sentative at the next Imperial Session in July 2010.

Have you donated blood lately? The benefits arenot just the great feeling you get by contributing

to a person in need. Donating can help you too!Recent studies have shown that giving blood can

not only cut your risk of heart attack, but also reduceyour susceptibility to certain cancers. How does it allwork?

In the United States, it’s more common for peopleto have too much iron, especially men and post-menopausal women. It’s been proven that too muchiron may contribute to plaque buildup in the arteriesby damaging cells in artery walls. This damage cancause blockages of blood to the heart. Studies alsofound that too much iron can cause damage to one ofthe cells that leads to cancer.

Here are a few tips to make donating blood easyand hassle-free:• Don’t smoke for at least an hour before and

after giving blood. In fact, you might want togive up smoking altogether!

• Eat a hearty meal beforehand.• Drink lots of fluids the day you donate blood

(before and after you donate).• Stay away from all alcohol before and after

giving blood. Alcohol can dehydrate your body ofessential fluids.

• Resume your normal activities, but avoidstrenuous workouts for a day.

• If you feel faint or dizzy, sit down and put yourhead between your knees, or lie down with yourhead lower than the rest of your body.

• If there is any bleeding from the tiny spot whereblood was drawn, simply raise your arm andapply pressure for seven to 10 minutes.

The Blood Mobile with be here during our PancakeBreakfast on February 7. They will not be here onApril 10, as the Pancake Breakfast has been canceledon Easter, their next visit will be June 6.

This is the second year for the VeniceLodge residents without family

Christmas project. This year we hadtwenty-two residents without family atthe Masonic Home in St. Petersburg. With all the special work, our organiza-tion does for the children, we some-times forget about those who did thework in the past.

Our project was a huge success thisyear with a lot of help from area Ma-sons, Shriners and their ladies. TheNorth Port Shrine Club, Widow SonsKnights of the East, Sahib Shriners,Past Master Unit and Hillbilly Gals ofSahib Shrine along with a lot of indi-viduals gave generous amounts of cashand gift items. We were able to give alltwenty-two residents a nice radio CDboom box and seven CD’s each. Theactivity director told us they all love to

listen to music. Along with the musicthey each got several items on theirneed/wish list including; daily toilet-ries, cologne, puzzle books, socks, jew-elry, model car kits for the guys, abasket for their room filled with good-ies and many more items. We were alsoable to donate one hundred twenty dol-lars to their F503 treat fund, which isthe fund they use for special outings, birthday parties and special events forthe residents. We hope our gifts willbring them a lot of joy and happinessthroughout the New Year. A specialthank you to the ladies of North PortShrine Club and the Venice MasonicLodge for all your help and hard work.

Christmas music, doughnuts and cof-fee—another treat for them. We werehonored to have the Grand Master’swife Rebba Goehirg join us. As ourgroup mingled with the residents I hadthe opportunity to visit with Miriamwhile she opened her CD boom box andand checked out all the goodies in hergift bag. I could see by the expressionon her face how happy she was, shesmiled at me and told me, “right nowher husband and her son were bothlooking down from heaven thankingme for doing this for her.” I will neverforget those words or her smile thatwas the best gift of the season for me.

Venice Masonic Lodge would like tothank everyone for their help and sup-port for this very important project. Wewish you all a very Happy and BlessedNew Year.

Around The Craft: Degree Team Noblesby Jerry Goacher, [email protected]

It is certain that many generations of our nbles haveworked long and hard memorizing, practicing and

conferring the degrees of the Concordant Bodies ofFreemasonry throughout periods of their Masoniccareers. Unfortunately, no list exists from which wecan abstract their names. We owe a great deal tothose dedicated Shriners, for there was a time whenmany of us could not have become Shriners had it notbeen for their dedicated work in the Scottish andYork Rites and we thank them for that.

Today Sahib Shriners are well representedthroughout our Craft serving to keep our whole Ma-sonic fmily productive and strong. The most notableof these activities occur within our Scottish and YorkRite work and this writer will attempt to acknowl-edge the currently active Shriner participants, know-ing somewhere along the way he may, by oversightand omission, offend and asks the offended forgive-ness. The list is long and for simplicity of reading, titles of accomplishment and ranks will not be in-cluded with the names. Most importantly to remem-ber is that all listed carry the honorable title of Nobleof the Mystic Shrine.

Beginning with the Scottish Rite Degrees, work-ing behind the scenes advising and assisting manydegree masters, is W. Bruce Steube III, Class Direc-tor Emeritus and Past Director of Work for the TampaConsistory. Lou Ortt continues the job of ClassroomDirector for the Reunions. Russell Glendinning re-tired from that position when appointed the PersonalRepresentative to the Sovereign Grand Inspector Gen-eral of Florida for the Valley of Tampa. Although notdegree work, Gary Schweinshaupt is now the produc-tion manager for the Valley’s bi-monthly magazine.

Degrees that include Sahib participation are theFourth, Fifth, Sixth, Fourteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-First, Twenty-Eighth, Twenty-Ninth, Thirtieth,Thirty-Second, the newly forming Twelfth DegreeTeam, and the Orient of Florida’s Thirty-Third De-gree Team.

Degree Masters of these degrees include BarryHart, Jerry Goacher, Edward Jordan and Theo Vreuls.Assistant Degree Masters include Frank Albinson,

Barry Hart, Ed Jordan, George Mitchell, Theo Vreulsand Steve Weatherly. Along with these degree teamleaders, Sahib members of the various teams includeTerry Armentrout, Eric Bock, William Burris, Hamp-ton Crimi, Norman Cyphers, Gil Fernandez, JohnHorne, Joe Humphreys, Rocky Kearney, GeorgeLukas, Doug McCaw, William Merritt, Phil Mitchell,Lou Ortt, Bryan Pullman, Delbert Rawlinson, Juande la Rosa, Les Ruggiero, Ed Sampey, Carl Savickas,Scott Steelman, Allen Sorbie, Joe Stella, Hollis TuckerIII, Don Vos, David Walters, John Wermann, PaulWoodman and Steve Yarbrough. The Annual Cer-emony of Remembrance and Renewal cast for theScottish Rite Club of Sarasota are also presentedentirely by Sahib Nobles Russell Glendinning, JerryGoacher, Barry Hart, Ed Jordan, George Mitchell,Phil Mitchell, David Walters, Steve Weatherly andSteve Yarbrough with a support staff that includesFred Heinzman, Joe Humphries, Allen Sorbie, TheoVreuls and Paul Woodman.

Eighteen Sahib Shriners are conferring the De-grees of the York Rite which include the Mark Mas-ter, Past Master, Most Excellent Master and RoyalArch Degrees of the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons;the Royal, Select, and Super Excellent Master De-grees of the Council of Royal and Select Masters: andOrder of the Red Cross, Knight of Malta and Order ofthe Temple for the Commandery of Knights Templar.

Participating in various roles are Rodger Craig,Earl Dennis, Gil Fernandez, Jim Fleming, JerryGoacher, George Hernandez, John Horne Jr., ToddMeschelle, Lou Ortt, Dwight Ridgeway, Les Ruggiero,Malcolm Ryder, B. John Ross, Barry Swan, JerryTomasso, Richard Walls, John Wermann, and Eric B.West. John Horne, Jim Fleming, Malcolm Ryder andJohn Wermann serve in coordinating much of thiswork.

Let those of us who have the privilege of belongingremember the beauty and lessons of these degreesand give a hearty “thank you” to our participatingnobles for keeping the “Further Light” bright for nonedo better “work” in the Scottish Rite’s Valley of Tampaand the York Rite’s 2nd District.

Bro: Ken Pedersen 33°, NorthernJurisdiction, to do a short presentation on NorthernJurisdiction Scottish Rite Masonry as it compares tothe Southern Jurisdiction. It should be a very educa-tional and informative evening. Dress is sport shirtand slacks. Coat, tie and cap are optional.

We’ll have two functions in the month of March. The first will be a luncheon on the second Friday,March 12, at the Sahib restaurant. We start gather-ing at around 11:30 a.m. There is no meeting, it’s justcome as you are, order off the menu and share in thefellowship.

On Wednesday March 24, we’ll have our annualCeremony of Remembrance at the Sarasota ScottishRite Club. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., followedby the Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. This event is open to thepublic. I’ll have more information for you as we getcloser to the event.

Just a reminder that you do not have to be amember of the Sarasota Scottish Rite Club to attendour functions. However, as I mentioned earlier thedues are only $10 per year. Please come out and joinus. Bring a friend or make some new friends andrenew some old friendships.

I can be reached at [email protected] or (941) 232-1787.

Here is a symbol among symbols. Ancient Masoniclaws remind us that every brother must attend

his lodge if within the length of his cable tow or withina “cable length.” This was originally determined to beabout three miles, or about a one-hour journey. Theterm “cable tow” is not found in many dictionaries, asit is peculiar to the Masonic Fraternity. The wordcable refers to a rope and tow refers to drag. While ouruse of it is symbolical, in the first degree it is usedalmost in the literal sense of physical control ordirection.

In Old German, the term “cable-tau” was taken from“kabel-tau,” which meant the cord which attached thebaby to its mother at birth (umbilical cord).

In Masonry, it represents that cord which unites aMason to all of the obedience’s or the mystic tie whichholds our great fraternity together, including all civicand moral law by which a man is held fast to hisduties.

Masonically, it is the scope of a man’s ability andmotivation to accomplish his objectives, this givingcable tows many different lengths.

Perhaps the best definition is that it is the lengthof a man’s conscience between himself and God. Hethen becomes his own judge and jury. As we thinkabout our cable tows, let us remember our obligationsto all our Masonic bodies, attend, and support them tothe length of our cable tows.

year for a period of nine years. Committees wereformed in each state Grand Commandery to regulatethe program in their jurisdiction.

Since the inception of this Foundation, over$29,000,000 has been loaned to worthy individuals.

As this is a loan program and does not make grants, the funds revolve and the program is self-sustaining.

Therefore, funds for this program are limited. EachK. T. Commandery has a committee to assist the GrandCommandery in the work of the Foundation (continu-ing in the next issue, Holy Land Pilgrimage)

You are cordially invited to attend the annualFlorida visitation of The Supreme Council, An-

cient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Northern MasonicJurisdiction, 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 5, 2010 atSahib Shrine.

We had an inspiring trip to the Shriners Hospitalfor Children in Tampa. Our members enjoyed thetour and found it very educational. Some ladies hadnot toured the hospital in quite a few years.

Our Yellow Tassel Pizza Party was yummy; Iparticularly liked the dessert pizzas.

The 2010 Burn Awareness campaign again features thepopular character, Anthony the Fire Ant! Anthony isfeatured in the coloring book, as well as on posters, stickers and other materials that are available for orderthrough www.burnawarenessweek.org.

Shriners Hospitals for Childrenhas treated more than 800children since 2002 for acuteburns caused by ignition of ahighly flammable material, suchas gasoline. More than 200 ofthese children were under age 7,and 584 were in the “tweens”and teens category – ages 8-18.Kids ages 13 and older are inthe highest at-risk group forgasoline and other flammablesubstance burns.

Burn prevention is a key endeavor ofShriners Hospitals for Children, whichis why the health care system began itsBurn Awareness campaigns more than20 years ago.

The 2010 Burn Awareness CampaignReckless use and improper storage ofgasoline and injuries resulting from scaldburns caused by hot liquids, steam orfoods, lead to thousands of young chil-dren being burned every year. These dan-gers are being addressed in ShrinersHospitals 2010 Burn Awareness Weekcampaign. Burn Awareness Week is rec-ognized each year during the first fullweek in February. This year, the week-long recognition is February 7-13, 2010

Gasoline Burn InjuriesTo help parents, caregivers, educatorsand firefighters teach children about thedangers of gasoline, the 2010 campaignprovides printable lesson plans and factsheets, as well as printable coloring pagesfeaturing Anthony the Fire Ant, whotakes kids along on his mission to pre-vent gasoline injuries.

“Tweens” and teens ages 10-14 yearsold are four times more likely to get introuble with gasoline. For this age group, the campaign uses the personal story ofAustin Bailiff, a teen who sustained seri-ous burns over most of his body as aresult of he and a friend experimentingwith gasoline to set fire to a glove. Austinshares his experiences in an effort toreach out to other teens in an effort toprevent others from making the samemistake.

Scald Burn InjuriesScald burns are the most common burninjury among children age 4 and younger, and kids in this age group have the high-est mortality rates for this type of injury. In one year, U.S. hospitals treated anestimated 16,000 children under the ageof 5 for scalds.

To help parents, caregivers, educa-tors and firefighters educate kids andthe public, the 2010 campaign providesposters and stickers featuring helpfulscald prevention information.

In addition to the resources immedi-ately available on this Web site, ShrinersHospitals for Children is providing re-sources for order, at no charge, that canbe used during Burn Awareness Weekand throughout the year.
