The Beat Goes On It was frosty outside but the
music sure heated things up
inside Laura’s Center for the Arts
at the Friends of Hanover
Music’s Hooray for Hollywood
Fundraiser last month.
Spectacular performances from elementary, middle, and
high school students were the icing on the cake for this
wonderful event. We raised over $6500 between the
event itself and the proceeds from the raffle calendar that
we kicked off that night. We thank everyone for their
enthusiastic participation! Please see pages 2 and 3 for
photos and a list of sponsors, without whom the evening
would not have been possible.
As much fun as this was, we can’t lose sight of the purpose
behind this and other fundraisers we hold. Musical
scholarships and equipment and supplies, sheet music, and
instruments for the schools’ music programs that the town
doesn’t provide are a few of the expenses that your
memberships and donations help pay for. FHM has also
provided funds for supplemental instruction for 5th grade
band students. Those of us who care about musical
education within as well as beyond the walls of the school
building hope that this support will continue to enrich the lives
of our kids and our community. If we can have some fun
while we raise the money, all the better!

THIS JUST IN! Congratulations to the members of the HHS Jazz Ensemble for a superior
performance at Wednesday night's MAJE Cape Cod/Costal Sr. Jazz Festival. Outstanding
Musicianship Awards were presented to Jacob Prescott, Bobby McDermott, and Eric Smith, and
together the band grooved their way to the only Gold Medal awarded to a Division II Band that
night! This achievement allows the Jazz Ensemble to participate for the second year in a row at
the MAJE Big Band State Finals in Framingham, MA, on March 29. Please contact Mr. Ketchen if
you'd like to attend the festival as space on the bus is limited (you can always meet us there,
though!) Performance times will be TBA until at least next weekend, so please be patient!
…and a great time was had by all!

Hanover High School Vocals, Instrumentals, and
Music KATE BERTELLI, Director of Choral Music, PAUL KETCHEN, Director of Instrumental Music
The Student Artist Recital went very well; students worked hard in preparation for their individual and group
performances and as always had a great representation of all different styles of music. Congrats to all on
another great recital.
Congratulations to Madison Fitzpatrick, Brendan Hoar, Peter Kelly, Bobby McDermott, Sydney Packer,
David Raab, and Nick Stevenson on their acceptance into Senior SEMSBA Chorus, Orchestra and Band,
and to Alexis Perry on her acceptance into the Junior SEMSBA Band.
On the same day as SEMSBA Auditions, the following students had been selected to participate in the
UMass High School Honor Band Festival at UMass, Amherst: Erica Adams, Megan Crowley, Nathan
Hanrahan, Erin Jenkins, Krystin McDermott, Molly Minnehan, Dante Nicotera, Giovanna Pessa, and Michael
Salters. Students rehearsed with talented peers from across New England and guest conductors
throughout the day, culminating in an evening performance featuring the three festival concert bands.
A few days later, the Bridgewater State University hosted their annual High School Honor Band Festival, and
the following students were selected from Hanover: Jill Benway, Megan Crowley, Sarah Kelly, Peter Kelly,
Josh Kuhn, Bobby McDermott, Molly Minnehan, Dante Nicotera, Lily Packer, Giovanna Pessa, David Raab,
Michael Salters, Nick Stevenson and Emily Tiedtke. These students joined with other band members from all
over New England to work with guest conductor Dr. Edwin Powell and host Dr. Donald Running to perform
on an evening concert shared with the BSU Wind Ensemble.
Coming up...March is Music In Our Schools Month!!!
Next week, Alexis Perry, Haley McCusker, Katherine Norton and Macy Hohenleitner will participate in the
Southeast District Jr. Festival Band and Treble Chorus on March 7 & 8.
On Tuesday, March 11, the following students will participate in the All New England Jazz Festival at
Plymouth State University: Bobby McDermott, Nick Stevenson, Peter Kelly, Dante Nicotera, Brian Meehan,
and Josh Kuhn. These students have been selected to join students from across New England to rehearse in
one of two jazz bands throughout the day, and the festival will culminate with a performance that evening
along with the Plymouth State University Jazz Band.
Our Annual Collaborative Concert featuring the HHS Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, VOX, and Concert
Chorus will be on Thursday, March 13th, at 7:30pm in the Robert J. Nyman Memorial Auditorium at Hanover
High School. We hope that you are able to join us for this preview (or encore for the Jazz Ensemble) of the
festival repertoire that is being rehearsed currently in all large performing ensembles at the high school.
And just around the corner...
The dates have been set for MICCA! Concert Band will be performing in Foxboro on Friday, April 4th.
Permission forms including performance and clinic times will be available soon. Parents are welcome to
not only attend the performances but also to observe the clinic with the adjudicator following the
performance to share more of the students' festival learning experience.
VOX and Concert Chorus will be performing in Norwood on Saturday, April 5th. Students are hard at work
at some very challenging repertoire; our theme for this competition is "languages around the world." No
two pieces will be in the same language. Students will be performing repertoire in Latin, French, Spanish,
Romanian, Sanskrit and English. To get a preview, come check out the Collaborative Concert in March!
Hanover Middle School Vocals JOHN SCHUMACHER, Director of Choral Music
The HMS Performance Troupe just finished "Winter Jam 2014" - performing a day show for the 5th and 6th
graders and an evening performance that was open to the public. The Troupe performed 11 songs and
the show also featured the HMS staff singing "Roar" by Katy Perry in a Jimmy Fallon/Roots style and the
Perry sisters singing "Red Rubber Ball" by the Cyrkle.
The HMS Korus is now working on their spring performance which will
take place on Thursday, May 14th. In addition to the individual Korus
numbers, the combined groups are working with HMS teacher Nina
Ohlson and Mr. Schumacher on doing a signed version of "Gotta Be"
by Des'ree.
In general music, the 8th graders are starting their multi-media projects
- a 3-5 minute video using imovie, Garageband, iphoto and Snapzpro software. The 7th graders are
starting "create-a-song" where they use Garageband to create and record a 2-4 minute song. The 6th
graders are in the middle of their creative unit and the 5th graders are working on their marvelous toys.
Hanover Middle School Instrumentals JULIENNE THORNELL, Director of Instrumental Music
The FHM fundraiser was a wonderful night of music, and the Jazz Band was very pleased to participate as
performers. We are very thankful for the hard work and support of our parents and FHM members, and it
was great to see so many of you at the event.
A select group of band students auditioned for SEMSBA this month, and they all worked hard preparing for
their auditions. We are very pleased to announce that five of our 8th grade students will be representing
HMS at the Jr. SEMSBA festival, May 2-3 at Plymouth North High School. In the festival band we will have
Chloe McKee (flute), Ava Whitney (clarinet), Caroline Cleary (trumpet), and Jake Sledziewski
(trombone). Alexis Perry will play snare drum in the Orchestra.
Upcoming performances:
April TBA 7/8 Band at State House, May 8 grades 6-8 Spring Band Concert, 7pm, May TBA grades 5 & 6
concert, time TBA
Other updates...One of our band members was diagnosed with leukemia and has been undergoing
treatment at Children's Hospital. His brother is also in the band, and we're keeping the family in our
thoughts. If you would like to support Anthony Pierotti and his family, there are links on his website, as well
as regular updates on his treatments. To send a message, or post a video or picture, please

Center/Sylvester School DUSTIN LINDSEY, Director of Music
Welcome back from the little break that we had. I hope you are all happy and healthy, and are
looking forward to this exciting time of the year. Here at Center/Sylvester, students are preparing for the
many concerts just around the bend.
Our Kindergarten students have begun working on Solfege syllables and the hand signals that go
along with them. We have listened to “Do, Re, Mi” from Sound of Music, and will be using this knowledge
to play a very fun instrument over the remainder of the third term.
The First Grade students have begun learning about ostinatos, and how we can begin to create
our own using different types of fruit. The students will begin creating an ostinato and poem as a class this
week, and will branch off into smaller groups to create individual ones by the end of the term.
The Second grade students have begun recording their “rhythmic improvisation” assessments, and
will learning about various countries around the world. This is in preparation for our Culture Show in April.
The countries we will be learning music from are Germany, Ghana, and Italy. Each class will focus on one
of the three previously mentioned countries, and every class will learn a song and dance from the United
States (there are a lot of them!!!)
Our Third Grade students are putting the finishing touches on their recorder concert tunes, as our
concert is next Wednesday, March 5th, 2014 at 9:00AM in the Center school auditorium. There will be many
soloists and small groups performing, along with whole-class songs. We hope to see you there! The students
have been working diligently in preparing what I’m sure will be a wonderful performance.
The Fourth Grade class has been working on their Spring concert. This concert will feature some
older choral standards, along with a couple of newer tunes, and a modern Disney favorite. If I told you
now, it would spoil the surprise, so you’ll have to come to the show to hear these wonderful tunes. They are
currently working on a set of songs by Clare Grundman titled “Zoo Illogical.” It is a collection of short songs
describing different animals you might find in a zoo, in a very silly way.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and for supporting the wonderful music programs that
we have in the Hanover Public Schools. I hope to see many of you next Wednesday!
Cedar School PAULA McMAHON, Director of Music
Hello from Cedar School. With all the cold, snowy weather this month Kindergarten decided to go ice
skating. We put our paper plates on the rug and skated off around the room to the sounds of The Skater’s
Waltz. We also sang about Raggs the dog and Valentine’s Day. First graders have been talking about how
notes can move in a melody and showing that movement with their bodies.
Second graders have been busy creating 2 measures of music which they notated on a staff and then
played for each other on tone bells. We’re learning how to read music using solfege syllables. Third
graders are making great progress with their recorders and earning stickers as they play songs in small
groups for me. They will be so ready to show you their “stuff” at their performances in June.
Fourth grade has been studying the instruments of the orchestra with “Luigi’s Baton.” We’ve talked about
all the instruments in the four families of the orchestra and heard how they sound individually and with
other instruments. Everyone was able to hear and play the snare drum. We discussed the fact that three of
those instrument families would be available for them to play next year in the Middle School. Excitement is
building!!!!!
When I hear music, I fear no danger. I am
invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the
earliest times, and to the latest.
