In the New Year, choose to be happier, healthier and safer!! 10 ways ideas to make 2015 a better year for you: 1-Start your day with a smile! Even if it's a cloudy morning and you have to ride your bike, stay positive and go ahead! You set your own mood! 2-What colors did you choose to fill your plate with today?? Try some fresh rainbow colors: it's appealing to your sight, and great for your body! 3- Can't go to the gym? No problem! You already have a amaz-ing, natural "equipment" available... your body! It's super easy to use, and that allows you to exercise anywhere, anytime! Go for a walk or out for a run, and you’re guaranteed to feel better and healthier! 4- Be simple! We are inherently by nature, so let's practice our simplicity! Simplify your life. It's a great stress reducer! 5- Turn off your music or practice 15 minutes of silence daily. Listen to yourself and be aware of your breathing! Do not take it for granted.
HEALTH & SAFETY CORNER: NEW YEAR, NEW
, NEW YOU!
6-Family is a priority! Spend time, money and effort on your spouse, your son and/or daughter! They are your treasure, so treasure them! 7-Consider your life as a tripod. Each leg and your core rep-resents a different aspect of your life: Body, Mind and Soul! Adjust those aspects and keep them in BALANCE, just like a tripod! 8-Eat, drink ,dance and have fun! We are in Spain, so have fun! You deserve it! But please, be aware of your own safety and of your life balance. Try to find your "happy medium"! 9-Don't wait until November to be thankful for some-thing...do it today!! Express yourself and be grateful on a daily basis! 10-Reduce the " i's"(ipods ipads , iphone) in your life. Make sure you allow yourself to sleep by turning of all your elec-tronic devices about half an hour before you go to sleep! Remember that those "i's" can promote another "i" that af-fects your lifestyle: "insomnia". Allow your body to discon-nect and have a good night sleep! In this corner we'll share health tips and information on wellness and safety every month. Be safe , be healthy , be present !!
Are You Disaster Ready? By Scott Humphreys, Disaster Chair
It is never to late to be “Disaster Ready”! In light of the significant flooding experi-enced this month along with the loss of power both on-base and out in town, it is time to think about being ready for potential disasters. During a disaster is the wrong time to make sure you are prepared! Being prepared covers many topics; here are a few questions that only you can answer. Do you and your family know have a meeting point in the event you need to evacuate your home or it becomes inhabitable? Do you have important items gathered into an emergency preparedness kit? How will you communicate and reconnect with your fam-ily, friends and people in your life after a disaster? Be Red Cross Ready: Get a kit. Make a plan. Be informed. The Red Cross is here to make sure you are as prepared as you possibly can be for po-tential disasters and other emergencies. These events can strike suddenly, at any time and anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a differ-ence. Be Red Cross Ready Checklist - Know what emergencies or disasters are most likely to occur in my community. - Have a family disaster plan and have practiced it. - Have an emergency preparedness kit. - Ensure at least one member of your household is trained in First Aid/CPR/AED. Taken action to ensure my family is prepared. For those tech savvy types, there are a lot of applications that can download to a smart phone or tablet. These applications cover a wide range of topics from emergencies and disasters to pet safety and useful apps to get the children involved.
Prepare a Disaster Kit Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate. At minimum you should have the following basic supplies: Water—one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week s supply for home)
Food—non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2- week supply for home)
Flashlight
Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
Extra batteries
First aid kit
Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
Multi-purpose tool
Sanitation and personal hygiene items
Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance poli cies)
Cell phone with chargers
Family and emergency contact information
Extra cash
Emergency blanket
Map(s) of the area

MONSTER GUARD APP RELEASED
A new American Red Cross app helps children between the ages of 7 and 11 learn emergency preparedness while playing a game as different monster charac-ters. The free app, “Monster Guard: Prepare for Emergencies,” is a game to learn how to prevent emergencies, such as home fires, and what to do if severe weath-er or natural disasters occur.
Set in the ‘Monster Guard Academy,’ the young app user is a recruit who trains to prepare for disasters and practice what to do if one happens. Users can role-play as various monster characters, go through the initiation and engage in interactive training episodes for different hazards. As children direct the monsters to identify fire hazards, locate a safe room in a house and select items needed for their emer-gency supplies kit, they learn how to prepare for emergencies. If a player com-pletes all of the episodes, he or she will graduate and become a member of the ‘Monster Guard.’
The Monster Guard App game is a complement to The Pillowcase Project, a free Red Cross youth preparedness initiative, for 8- to 11-year-olds, designed to in-crease children’s awareness and understanding of natural hazards and reduce their fears. Participants learn safety and emotional coping skills, and personal emergen-cy preparedness skills. Information on The Pillowcase Project is available at red-cross.org/prepare. The app and The Pillowcase Project are both sponsored by Disney.

Volunteer Survey
The American Red Cross’s European Division is conducting a survey of all of the American Red Cross volunteers in Europe. Please find below the link to the European Volunteer Survey. The survey period will run from January 26th – February 6th.
The European Volunteer Management Team has tired to make the sur-vey short and manageable. There are several places where we ask you to comment or explain, please take the time to do so. Your honest and open feedback will assist the Red Cross in developing a standard operating procedure for volunteers in Europe that we hope will be adopted as a model in OCONUS because our volunteers have made it so successful!
If you have any questions or comments about this process please don't hesitate to contact Gabriella Reed via email at [email protected].
Thank you in advance for contributing to this important survey, we look forward to publishing the results sometime in March.
