There are lots of examples of the FBI Federal Burea of investigation, Yuma Axulillary communication Service YACS, Central Arizona DX Association CADXA and the list goes on. Calling, E-Mailing the ARRL Section Manager will not help. I am part of the ARRL I will not be able to argue your case because I have to follow their rules and regulations. It is true I represent the ARRL Membership in Arizona and I really do argue alot for you and fix what I can but this is one item I can not help with. Why am I writing about this because in the past month I have had 2 clubs with bad acronyms that were rejected. You think it is funny others may not. I would like to address an item concerning hamfest. When your committe or club puts on a hamfest and request ARRL approval of your event you take on certain items concerning the event. When you put the flyers together for your event include the ARRL logo, If you want ARRL DXCC card checkers at the event then put it on the flyer. This sections has several ARRL DXCC card checkers that are willing to show up at your event and check qsl cards for DXCC. If you do not inform the people that you have ARRL DXCC Card Checkers at your event and they show up because you asked them to and no one brings cards because your organization failed to put it on the flyers or advertise it in your news letter you just had some ARRL DXCC Volunteers travel a distance to just stand around. January began with the Thunderbird Hamfest. Weather was very good and the turnout was extremely good and the tailgaters, I mean tailgaters every where there was alot of equipment and items for sale. The Thunderbird hamfest committee did an outstanding job. Everyone was very friendly, and out going. Really nice to see and hear. He answered questions from the crowd. After Richard spoke I was given a chance to let them know how Arizona was doing. Gordon West was in attendance along with a lot

of other amateurs. This event alway brings out the curiosity in me at all the differnt mobile type antennas. If you are an amateur and do mobile HF or RVing this event is well suited for you so put it on your calendar. The event was very well attended. More then in previious years. Starting after this year event it will be run by a committee, this should make it even better.

ARRL club affiliation is a positive thing for your club. There are some things that need to be looked at when you apply. One is take your clubs full name and then take it's first letter of every word that forms your club name and write it down. Look at it. This is called acronym. There are lots of examples of the FBI Federal Burea of investigation, Yuma Axulillary communication Service YACS, Central Arizona DX Association CADXA and the list goes on. You submit your club constitution and bylaws to the ARRL or in our case Arizona submitts them to the Arizona Cub Affiliator that is Tom Fulmer KE7NVG. he looks at it see if anything is missing and forwards it to ARRL. ARRL has had these guide lines in place since befor the 1950s. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THE FCC HAS ISSUED YOU A LINCENSE WITH YOUR LITTLE ACRONYME IN IT. The ARRL is a private organzation with 501 3C so it has to protect itself from this. All your arguments that you come up will make no difference.

This sections has several ARRL DXCC card checkers that are willing to show up at your event and check qsl cards for DXCC. check QSL cards and answer your questions concerning Awards at any hamfest. Just remember they are volunteers and they do it on their time and gas expense so advertise their presence prior to the event.

Section Managers Calendar

I am starting the 2015 calendar and I will be attending the ham fests in Arizona. To clubs that wish to have your Arizona Section Manager talk to them about the ARRL current events and what is going on in Arizona put in your request by emailing me dates, that means more than one date, and I will try and work it out to arrange it. I would really like to meet some of you on your own home turf. I am putting time aside to attend as many as I can. 2015 is becoming a great year in Amateur Radio with the ARRL

HAMCON 2015--also the 2015 ARRL Southwestern Division Convention is September 11-13, 2015, at the Torrance Marriott South Bay Hotel , 3635 Fashion Way, Torrance, CA 90503

Yuma Hamfest Balloon Event

For 2015, we will try it again. If the prevailing winds and launch conditions are favorable, a "near space" balloon will be launched by Arizona Near Space Research (ANSR) at approximately 9:00 a.m. on

Saturday 21 February 2015 at the Yuma Hamfest. More information to come as we get closer to the event.

The launch will take place about 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Yuma Hamfest, weather permitting. If the prevailing winds are not right, e.g., upper winds which could cause the balloon to take a path over the Barry Goldwater range or into Mexico, then the launch will either be scrubbed or repositioned to an alternate location. The exact time of the launch will be determined by winds, air traffic and is coordinated with the nearby MCAS Yuma control tower.

The balloon typically carries student-built payloads from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and/or Arizona Western College. The payloads often contain scientific equipment such as temperature and pressure sensors, cameras, and a Geiger Counter. Other payloads will include two APRS beacons and a cross-band repeater. The cross-band repeater will operate with an input frequency of 145.56 MHz with a 162.2 Hz tone, and an output of 445.525 MHz. While contacts (especially DX) are welcome, please give priority to chase team members.

APRS Beacons will transmit position information on 144.34 MHz (KA7NSR-12 and KA7NSR-14) and 445.925 MHz (KA7NSR-13). A mobile cross-band Digipeater will repeat the beacon data to the 144.390 MHz standard APRS frequency locally and subsequently will be I-GATED to the Internet for out-of-area trackers. Callsign information will be provided prior to the flight for following on www.aprs.fi and www.findu.com.

The expected burst altitude of the balloon is 85,000-90,000 feet or more. The flight is anticipated to last about 2.5 hours from launch to touchdown.

setting up. Auction begins at 1900 hours.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A CLUB MEMBER TO BE A SELLER.

Sellers will register and fill out one ticket per item to sell whether as individual items or a box containing more than one item. Rules of the auction are posted

which include payments and fees.

Note: when filling out your ticket(s) PRESS HARD. THERE ARE 4 COPIES!!! Bidders will register to receive a number paddle to use when bidding. A Cashier’s desk will be set up to pay for items won. You may pay at any time during or after the auction is over. Sellers will receive their proceeds in the mail. We have found this to be better than paying at the auction which takes too much time and gets

everyone home very late.

Items eligible for sale shall be ham related. This rule is followed to the T ! Auction directors will be the final word on what is ham related. Buyers will show receipt ticket

at the exit. There is a soda machine in the lobby. No other refreshments are planned. Equipment will be sold ‘as is’, no refunds. Payment will

be cash or check with proper identification. Your participation in this auction is your commitment to follow the rules. If you need help bringing in items from or in

taking items to your car, please ask and someone will gladly lend assistance.

Hello Bob,

The Maricopa Amateur Radio Association, Inc, will be holding its first CopaFest next year on

Saturday October 17th. Would you be able to to attend the event and represent the ARRL with a

booth. The location is at Harrah's Complex, located on Ak-Chin land. We would also be interested

in having someone from ARRL give a a presentation on Amateur Radio, as we plan on having

meeting rooms in the adjacent convention center.

Please let me know if this would be possible. We met today with our representative from Ultra Star

and would like to get this marketed as soon as possible.
