Working daily during Lent to become new and whole in Christ, answering our individual calls to sanctity, allowing ourselves to be transformed by the power of the Resurrection are all acts of our love in response to God’s love for us. That is, I think, a particularly special Valentine that we can live every day. Thomas Merton, one of my favorite spiritual writers, reminds us that we are not alone in our search for sanctity or in that desire to be transformed. We participate in that struggle and that search in community. I hope this meditation is as meaningful for you as it is for me as we begin this Lenten season. Know that I pray for you every day—being a parent is very hard work. I pray for each of your children too as they continue to grow in age and in God’s grace. I hope that you will pray for me too.

Dear Parents,

There are a few dates on the school calendar that I would like to highlight. We are already in the second month of 2015 and are that much closer to the seniors’ graduation day! The remainder of this second semester of the school year will pass quickly for everyone, but particularly for the seniors and their parents. As they experience moments of nostalgia for the past and moments of excitement about the future, their challenge will be for them to live wholly in the present. And isn’t that our daily challenge as well! I hope that you will keep the seniors and their parents in your prayers as they live these last few months of high school at Bishop Montgomery.

• Monday, February 2nd, Faculty Meeting, 7:45; 8:45 a.m. Start• Wednesday, February 4th, ACT Testing for 10th and 11th grades—mandatory—8-11 a.m.• Tuesday, February 10th, National Honor Society Induction, 9:00 a.m.• Monday, February 16th, Presidents’ Day, School Holiday• Wednesday, February 18th, Ash Wednesday Mass, Lent begins

January and February have always seemed to me to be transition months—a quiet time after the holidays—and before the excitement of all that is new in the spring. These months have always been a particular time of reflection for me—reflection about how I can become a better person and about what more I can and should be doing for others—a celebration of Valentine’s Day (one of my favorite days!) which is an opportunity to say thank you to all those who bring so much love into to my life. And during February this year Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. It seems so fitting to me that Valentine’s Day and the beginning of Lent happen all in the same month.

WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN

From the PrinciPal:Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal

All Christian life is meant to be at the same time profoundly contemplative and rich in active work. It is true that we are called to create a better world. But we are first of all called to a more immediate and exalted task: that of creating our own lives. In doing this, we act as co-workers with God. We take our place in the great work of mankind, since in effect the creation of our own destiny, in God, is impossible in pure isolation. Each one of us works out his own destiny in inseparable union with all those others with whom God has willed us to live. We share with one another the creative work of living in the world. And it is through our struggle with material reality, with nature, that we help one another create at the same time our own destiny and a new world for our descendants.--Thomas Merton. WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN

Most of our seniors have now completed their college applications and will turn their attention to the financial aid process. Those who wish to receive financial aid, regardless of the school they ultimately choose to attend, must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, more commonly referred to as the FAFSA.

The US Department of Education has updated the FAFSA on the Web website for the 2015-2016 school year at www.fafsa.ed.gov The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the application for federal and state student financial aid. FAFSA applications for the 2015-2016 year will be accepted starting January 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov

California’s Cal Grant program requires the FAFSA to be filed by March 2, 2015. In addition, to receive Cal Grant award consideration, a student must have a school certified Grade Point Average (GPA) submitted by March 2, 2014 (Bishop Montgomery submits this for you, so you do NOT have to do anything for the GPA verification). Colleges will have their own scholarship and financial aid filing deadlines, sometimes earlier than March 2. Students should check on-line with every college under consideration for their scholarship and financial aid deadline.

Although a student’s final financial aid eligibility will be based on final 2014 year tax figures, students are encouraged to file their FAFSA as early as possible. Students and parents should complete the FAFSA by the earliest school deadline using estimates of their 2014 federal taxes. Then, when the final tax figures are available, they must file a correction at www.fafsa.ed.gov Not having final tax figures is not an accepted reason for missing a school or state filing deadline. Questions on the completing the FAFSA can be made to the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID or you can email [email protected].

Each year, our counselors stress the importance of submitting the FAFSA as early as possible. The reason for doing so is to give you as much time as possible to review, compare, and analyze each school’s SAR. Having the entire month of April, and possibly part of March, to consider and weigh the financial impact of a college decision is critical in our opinion.

Also, both the FAFSA and the Cal Grant forms must be submitted or postmarked no later than March 2nd. Hopefully, both you and your child have applied for and received a pin number to be used as the electronic signature for the FAFSA if you will be submitting online.

College scholarships generally become more local and talent- or interest-specific during the second semester. Each scholarship opportunity that the school is made aware of in print form is summarized in the Family Connection, daily bulletin, and cataloged in the Guidance Center. Students are encouraged to actively pursue these opportunities, while remaining cognizant of the work involved. Many scholarship applications require as much work, if not more, than a college application. Please encourage your child to pursue appropriate opportunities where he or she will be a competitive applicant.

We hope that you will discuss course selection with your child before re-registration on March 6th. Information regarding re-registration is available on our website. Freshmen will review the registration process on Feb. 27th in Religion classes.

***Seniors***

Please note that any changes made to your schedule for the spring/second semester must be reported to every school to which you have applied. If you have submitted applications before your class change is made, please be sure that you email each school’s admissions office to let them know what change has been made and why. If you have not submitted your applications, then you may report the class change(s) within your application. It is VERY IMPORTANT to let the admissions office know as soon as possible as it may have a direct impact upon whether or not you are accepted/waitlisted/denied to the school.

***Honors/AP STUDENTS***

Honors and AP students who fell below an 83% at the semester as stated in the course catalog have been leveled down to the appropriate course. Again, any senior who has already submitted applications, should immediately contact each school with the change of schedule as stated in the paragraph above.

Sincerely,Casey DunnGuidance/Studies Coordinator

Sweatshirts: BMHS sweatshirts are the ONLY sweatshirts that are allowed. They DO NOT SHRINK, so please purchase a size appropriate for your student. All other sweatshirts will be confiscated and further disciplinary action will follow. During the 2nd Semester, Seniors are allowed to wear an official, non-hooded crew-neck college sweatshirt of the college they will be attending.

Is it an “Excused” or “Unexcused” Absence/Tardy?: A phone call to the Attendance Office does not necessarily “excuse” an absence or tardy. It merely lets us know that the parent/guardian was aware of the absence or tardy. The nature of the absence or tardy (“excused” or “unexcused”) will be determined by the Deans and Attendance Office. Refer to your Parent-Student Handbook for what constitutes an “excused” absence or tardy.

No Messages. The Attendance Office and the Front Office staff do not deliver messages during the day. It is both time consuming and disruptive to classes.

Cell Phones: Please remind your students to be responsible with the use of their cell phones. Upon arriving on campus, students must turn off their cell phones and place them in their lockers. Student may not use their cell phones during school hours. Furthermore, cell phone use is not permitted in any of the school buildings, offices or locker rooms regardless of the time. Any student who fails to abide by the cell phone policy will have his or her cell phone confiscated and will be issued a disciplinary referral. Cell phones will only be returned to the student’s parent or guardian.

Prom Dance: Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the student’s school along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their school. YOU are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest.

Prom Time. Prom is just around the corner. As a reminder, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 21)

Prom Dress Attire. The dance is formal.

Dress Code for Prom

Please adhere to the following dress code for Prom, and do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you, or an invited guest, purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to the guidelines WILL NOT be permitted to enter the dance, and will be sent home. If you are asked to leave Prom, the bid money will not be refunded, and may result in disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

Gentlemen-Required to wear tuxes or suits.Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. Dress shoes are required.

Picking-up and Dropping-off Off-Campus:All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from picking up or dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking

property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

Bishop Montgomery has a $100 athletic participation fee for all athletes. This is a one- time a year, play as many sports, as you can fee. Any athlete listed on a roster must pay this fee. This fee helps to defray some of the costs to run the athletic program. Fall sport athletes should have received a letter from the Athletic department. Winter sport athletes will receive their letter in February.

Both boys and girls basketball and soccer begin League play soon. Come show your support and make a home came. Your son or daughter may get a chance to help with tuition!!This basketball season at Bishop Montgomery, students will have a chance to win money off their tuition if they make a half-court shot during the boys’ and girls’ varsity games.

Each home game, students can write their name on a ticket at the entrance to the games. One lucky student will be chosen each game to take a half-court shot at halftime. The pot will build each game if the shot is not made. If the shot is made, the pot will begin again at the next home basketball game.

Students may enter the contest once each game and there is no purchase necessary.

The contest is open to current Bishop Montgomery students only.

Congratulations to freshman Kevin O’Donnell ‘18, who is our first winner. Kevin made the shot on January 13 at the girls’ varsity basketball game vs. St. Anthony.

Bishop Montgomery this month has met with the Los Angeles Archdiocese E-rate Consortium. BMHS is one of eighty-nine schools in the greater Los Angeles area working together to acquire a share of the available $5 billion in federal funding. The goal of the consortium is to bring each classroom to the minimal standard of: A) cat-6 ethernet cable, B) three data outlets, and C) one 802.11ac wireless access point. The final infrastructure upgrades should begin this coming summer, after final bids are reviewed and accepted in April. BMHS will have the necessary infrastructure to support the influx of Chromebooks and devices added to the school’s network in the 2015/2016 school year.

Teachers have begun curriculum mapping using the service Rubicon Atlas. Curriculum mapping helps BMHS build a more capable learning community. Curriculum mapping allows for: increased collaboration and conversation between teachers, transfer of knowledge, increased curriculum integration, transparency in course content, better alignment and reflection pertaining to state standards, and a perspective of course content on the micro and macro scale.

The fee for each AP exam is $100. All students taking the AP exams must pay for the exams by Friday, February 20th. Students must submit the final payment to the Student Store by Friday, February 20th. Please note that many students are taking several exams and the complete payment is due on February 20th! Any student not paying by the deadline date of February 20th will not be allowed to sit for the exam. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE!!

We’d “LOVE” TO SEE YOU at the next Mothers Club Meeting! February 23rd @ 7 PM!

January was a slow month for PSI hours!

We hope you enjoyed that time because once January passes, the rest of the school year seems to fly, especially for our

Senior families!

Student Appreciation Day was January 30th. Mothers’ Club passed out treats to show the kids how much we love them!

Our next event is Undergrad Awards on March 31st! Come and sign up for PSI hours!

Since Mom’s “Love” chocolate and dessert, here’s the

“Just Desserts” Meeting schedule for the year: FEB 23: Juniors

MAR 23: Sophomores APR 20: Freshman

On May 11th we celebrate the old Board, and bring in the new with our Installation dinner. Think about joining us on the board this year! Or, nominating

someone to the board for the 2015/16 school year!

______________________________________________________________

February is the Month we celebrate “Love” and St. Valentine, so try to

remember these words from 1 Corinthians 13:3-5 (NIV 1984, ©1984): “3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT US IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS: PRESIDENT: JUDY TOLIN [email protected] or [email protected]
