Let’s see….huge men in tight uniforms, slamming into each other for 60 minutes,

plus commercials. How much does that tie in with service organizations that vol-

unteer in the community? Quite a bit, actually. In football and in volunteering,

both are goal oriented. Both have a plan for success. Both examples are driven

by effective collaboration. Here’s how it happens:

There is a role for each person: Each team member brings strengths and skills

to the field. Everyone can’t be the quarterback (or club president). What would

happen if the running backs pushed the QB aside to grab the snap?! Doesn’t

work! Each individual contributes in a different fashion, serving a different

function, performing a different task, and yet the over all outcome remains the

same: successful teamwork.

Everyone does not participate at the same time: In American football there are

several teams that make up the overall organization. Offensive team, defensive

team, special teams. Of course back in the day, ironman football reigned, but

those guys quickly burned out and the platoon system emerged. Thankfully, our

club operates under the platoon system, meaning we can break out into groups

and each contribute where and when we can. Our overall goals are still reached

because each of our club members puts forth the effort that facilitates a positive

outcome.

We have common goals and values: it’s pretty safe to say that our club members

are like-minded when it comes to giving back to the community, to caring about

our neighbors, and about enjoying a socio-cultural value system. In very

straightforward terms we do things that will benefit and help others, and as a

result our “paycheck” is simply feeling good. That’s a contract we can negotiate

year after year.

GO HAWKS!

“SEAHAWKS. VOLUNTEERISM. YEAH I SEE THE PARALLEL…” February, 2015

Honk if you love peace and quiet.

Apparently Blue is the new Black! Recently Dave, Al and Howard presented

[past] President Paul Salas with a “Mantle of Success.” The following is Dave’s

rendition of Paul’s Inauguration:

Long ago, there was a man, with great strength and fearlessness, who was

known as Prince Paulo or which was often shortened to just “PP”. He was the

Chief of the famous Mukilteo Kiwanis Clan!

One hot summer day Paulo and some of his loyal Kiwanian’s (Tomisco, Zugal-

housen, Timinator, Dana-ana-dana, Pama-Lama-Bama,and Dafa-dilly-pretty)

attired in their finest, silken, Speedo’s headed for Lighthouse Park to go fishing. They caught plenty of fish and

enjoyed each other’s company, as always and as they were heading back to shore they saw a beautiful mermaid

heading directly towards them.

Paulo being strong and their fearless leader stood on the bow with his gavel and proclaimed to the Maiden that he…

was the emperor of the great MKC! (which is class??)

Having heard of his great organization the Maiden shrieked with joy that the

great PP, the High Chief of the MKC was actually in her presence, in all his…

Glory! (he was wearing?)

The other High Chiefs in the land heard of this story and felt the Legend must

have mystical powers and decided that in order for him to become a High, High

Chief (not the toking type) he would have to accomplish three major feats!

The first would be to learn common English and be able to pronounce such

words as Mer-lot, Cab-er-net, and Pi-not No-ir. The second would be to crack the backs of all the Kiwanians as they

assembled at their sacred digs gathering site every Wednesday morning. (Ya?) And lastly, and most challenging

would be to attend and perform the famous Bareass Booty Bossanova @ a Xmas partee’! Whom of you actually

witnessed this horrid behavior?? (Xmas Partee’) But…(ladies) how many of you imagined it bare??

Ya know what? Ya know what? Did the Guam Legend conquer and complete these 3 tasks? And should he be

celebrated for 2 of best years our club has ever had…..Yes or No? Lets give a cheer for da Guam Legend! Let’s give

a cheer for our Legendary HERO!

Give me a P-A-U-L-O……. Hip Hip Hooray, repeat!..... “For he’s a jolly good fellow….”

In light of your awesome 2 year dynasty we’d like to present to you a token of our appreciation for all your hard

work, your hugs, speaking loudly so I could hear you, ETC.,ETC….we’d like to give you a…(pause) a big group hug…

(ladies first)! --Now close your eyes as we now finish this sacred ceremony…(wrap flag around his body) We got the

X-L size so you wrap it around as many of your girl friends as you wished on cold winter nights!

Thank you, Dave for that heartfelt if slightly salty homage to Paul. I think President Obama’s Communication Team

would benefit from your unique and unconventional writing style.

We’d like to congratulate Kamiak Student of the Month, Devonna Abilo.

As a sophomore, Devonna has already made a mark as a young lady that

is involved with, engaged in and caring about making life better for her

community. She takes part in many projects that support the betterment

of others, including Annie’s Soup Kitchen, Harbour Pointe Retirement,

Rosehill’s Boo Bash, Mukilteo’s Tree Lighting, our own Salmon Bake, and

much more. Aside from Key Club endeavors, she spend time with the

Boys & Girls Club during the summer, was a member of the Hugs for Gha-

na this past year, and is currently serving as the ASB secretary for her

class.

As if that weren’t enough, Devonna still maintains a 3.85 GPA, securing a

spot into the National Honors Society. We, along with Uncle Paul [Salas] are extremely proud of her.

Congratulations, Devonna!

The Mukilteo Family YMCA announces their 2015 Annual

Campaign Kick-Off Event. You are invited to join them for a fun

and memorable evening at Rosehill

Community Center for a hosted wine bar,

soft drinks and appetizers. This is a great

opportunity to learn about new programs

being launched in 2015. Complimentary child care will be available

upon reservation. For more information contact Merrie at 425-493-

2424 or send an email to Cory Armstrong-Hoss at carmstronghoss@ymca

-snoco.org.

There are no traffic jams along the Extra Mile.

Last month the club took up Gary Webster’s

generous offer of storage for our club’s

equipment, signs and other miscellaneous

items. With an annual savings of $2,100,

moving our items from the downtown

storage to Travis Industries is a welcome cost

reduction. This will allow our club to redirect

this money to other ways of supporting our

community.

Prior to the work weekend an email was

sent, indicating that with only three

members signed up, the task would be

arduous and long. Consistent with the

“can-do” attitude of our members, when the

call went out for volunteers, 16 folks showed

up with gloves, trucks, trailers, dollies (and

most importantly, smiles).

On December 29th, starting at 10:00 a.m., a

mountain of “stuff” was loaded up and

transported in several trips from downtown

to Travis Industries, south of Harbour Pointe.

The saying “many hands make light work”

proved true. Member Tom Nielson noted,

“Paul had a big smile on his face the whole

morning. He knew his fellow mem-

bers weren’t going to let him down!”

Thanks go to Al Dantico, Dave Jones,

Gary Webster, George Holser,

Howard Phillips, Jim Voetberg, John Brachman, John Lucko-

vich, Lou Hambrecht, Paul Salas, Rex Caldwell, Skip Kidd, Tim

Taylor, Tom Nielson Scott Whelpy, and Dodde Carlson for

pitching in to make this a successful move!
