ArcelorMittal provides 310,000 tons of steel for gas pipeline to EuropeTo enable the construction of one of the largest oil and gas pipelines in the world – the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) – ArcelorMittal is providing 310,000 tons of hot rolled coils from its production site in Bremen, Germany, more than one third of all the hot rolled coils needed for the TANAP project. It is also the largest order ever placed with ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, by a company in the oil and gas industry.

TANAP is a 2,000km natural gas pipeline that will cross Turkey, from the Shah-Deniz field in Azerbaijan to the European border, helping to secure the supply of energy to Europe.

Construction is expected to be complete by 2018, at a total cost of around US$7 billion. Once complete, the new pipeline will be able to transport more than 16 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year.

“This is an exciting and challenging project for us. Deliveries will start in 2015 and

last for two years. It is the largest single order ever for Bremen. It shows our ability to supply the required high quality products, and to ensure punctual delivery. It also underlines ArcelorMittal’s commitment to Bremen,” said Dietmar Ringel, CEO of ArcelorMittal Bremen.

The steel used is an X70, high-end grade for pipeline applications which have a very high thickness. Bremen is one of the few mills in the world that can make this product.

Our steel used in the Artère de l’Adour gas pipeline, France Once completed, the Artère de l’Adour gas pipeline will run for almost 100 kilometres from Arcangues to Coudures in the south-west of France. The new pipeline will enable French gas company TIGF to improve gas supply in the local region, and provides a connection between Spain’s Basque Country and the wider European gas network.

The finished pipe for the new gas line was supplied by long-term ArcelorMittal customer, Corinth Pipeworks of Greece. Incorporated in 1969, Corinth Pipeworks is one of the world’s leading steel pipe manufacturers for the oil and gas

industry and a major supplier of hollow sections for the construction sector.

The choice of ArcelorMittal as the steel supplier ensured that Corinth Pipeworks did not need to wait for approval from TIGF. “ArcelorMittal supplied the hot rolled coils from its mill at Fos-sur-Mer near Marseille in southern France. The fact that they were a reputable and local French supplier was a benefit,” says Nicholas Sarsentis, Hot Rolled Coil Procurement Director for Corinth Pipeworks. “If we had chosen another steel supplier, TIGF may have had to evaluate them first.”

TIGF specified a demanding steel grade which has high tensile strength and excellent toughness at low temperatures. “TIGF’s specifications on the steel, finished pipe, and delivery were quite demanding,” Sarsentis adds.

The final batch of coils was delivered to Corinth Pipeworks in December 2013. “ArcelorMittal was able to meet our schedule which in turn enabled us to meet the stringent delivery requirements set by our customer,” explains Sarsentis. “At the end of the project, ArcelorMittal had a satisfied customer and so did Corinth Pipeworks.”

Fabric of life - supplying the energy market with top quality steel ArcelorMittal’s steel plays an essential role in the extraction, processing and distribution of oil and gas. This month we highlight the most recent gas pipeline projects for which ArcelorMittal supplied steel.

Stefan Stojadinovic [email protected]

In 2015, all eyes are on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) to take place in Paris in December. The grand finale of several years of COP meetings, the COP 21 is seen as the crucial attempt to reach a full, global climate change deal. So 2015 is going to be a big year for climate change policies that will inevitably impact ArcelorMittal.

At a regional level, significant changes are already underway which have demanded a response from the company. On Oct. 23, 2014, European Union leaders debated the final draft of the 2030 Climate & Energy Framework, which ambitiously targets a cut in carbon emissions by energy-intensive industries, including the steel industry, by 43 per cent from 2005 levels, part of the broader plan to reduce greenhouse emissions by 80-95 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050 and achieve energy savings of 20 per cent.

In theory, the framework focuses on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, increasing renewable energy, making energy supplies more secure and affordable, and encouraging Europe to become more energy efficient.

However, we believe the

emissions reduction targets are jeopardizing the re-industrialisation of Europe: these measures will raise energy costs further and lead to greater uncertainty. And despite investing in improvements, the steel industry in Europe does not have the technology to achieve the emissions reduction targets proposed.

‘’In practice, the policy won’t achieve its objective of sustainable economic growth. It treats European industry as a monolith, subject to a single set of targets and performance indicators, and that won’t work. What’s needed instead is an industry-by-industry approach that sets ambitious goals for each sector without putting entire industries at risk. Decarbonisation does not have to mean deindustrialization. Sadly, this is exactly what the proposed policy risks doing,’’ says Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal Europe.

The costs of implementing the policy would make European steelmaking uncompetitive and unsustainable. Between 2020 and 2030, the additional costs are estimated to be around €58bn ($73.76bn); this is based on a carbon price of €40 per metric ton combined with the EU’s planned reduction in carbon dioxide emissions allowances and the indirect impact of high energy prices.

‘’ArcelorMittal would have to bear €20bn of this cost, or an

average of €2bn a year, far exceeding ArcelorMittal’s European profits,’’ adds Aditya Mittal.

Although the European steel industry backs measures to encourage cost-effective development of technologies that reduce carbon emissions, there is no realistic prospect of renewables powering the European steel industry soon.

Energy and climate are a global issue, not only EuropeanThe pressure on the European steel industry also furthers the threat of carbon leakage - where industries close in one region and instead operate in another region, which has less stringent environmental legislation.

So how is the steel industry outside Europe responding to carbon emission challenges?

The Province of Ontario has stated it is committed to clean, reliable and affordable electricity. As such, it has moved away from coal based power generation to nuclear, hydro, natural gas, wind, solar and bioenergy, all reducing carbon emissions.

The governments of Canada and Ontario are still developing climate change plans which will eventually regulate greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. At ArcelorMittal Dofasco, we are committed to continuously reducing our carbon emissions through technology and energy efficiency improvements in our

operations. In Canada and the U.S.,

legislation in industries that are heavy consumers of steel - for example the automotive industry - is driving change by demanding lower emissions and encouraging greater innovation from steel suppliers.

In China, although the China Iron & Steel Association is urging mills to accelerate the upgrade of production processes with the new environmental law set to combat rampant pollution, the reduction plans remain in their infancy compared to Europe. However, the Chinese government plans to introduce carbon permit trading next year, to slow down growth in CO2 emissions - the country’s steel industry will undoubtedly have a major role to play in this system.

In Brazil, the country set ambitious emissions reduction targets in 2009, specifically guiding the steel industry to more use of charcoal from planted forests. Our “Bioflorestas” project in Brazil is an excellent example of how ArcelorMittal has responded to the challenge laid down by Brazilian law.

So it’s clear that the debate, and legislation, differs widely around the world. The progress towards a lower carbon economy and society requires a global climate deal that will create a global level playing field for steel and other industries. The question cannot be addressed at a local or

regional level. Carbon emission and climate change are a global issue. This is the steel industry’s

hope for COP 21 in Paris in December: global problem - global solution.

Nothing is more importantWe’ve made incredible improvements in our Health and Safety performance at ArcelorMittal Dofasco. However, in 2015, we’re turning to a mathematical approach that will give our Journey to Zero a boost.

Jim [email protected]

ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Journey to Zero is about preventing accidents by understanding and managing hazards. This involves setting up advanced safety monitoring systems, which take

into account behaviours, as well as working conditions across our operations.

In 2003, we had 250 lost time injuries a year. In 2014, we had six – a remarkable accomplishment in just 10 years. In the past, our ability to make changes to our working conditions was based on conducting root cause analysis on accidents.

However, significant improvement in our Health and Safety performance means we have very few accidents to analyze for improvement (which is a good thing!). Instead, we focus on identifying hazards for improvement. To help, we’re turning to a mathematical formula for another step change in our performance. It’s called the Byrd Accident Pyramid and it relies on the simple premise that the more information we collect, the more hazards we know about, and the more effective work we can do to manage our safety.

The pyramid isn’t something new. It was first developed the the early 1930s and further developed by Frank Byrd in the late 1960s. In short, the pyramid

represents a probability-based model that indicates for every

600 incidents with no visible injury or damage,

there are 30 property damage accidents,

10 minor injuries, and one serious

injury. Other versions of this model have been developed on an industry by industry basis. With Byrd’s Pyramid as our guide, we’ll dig deeper and work harder to find and manage more hazards. We’ll use a model that indicates for every 30,000 unsafe conditions or behaviours, there are 3,000 accidents without injury, 300 minor/moderate injuries, 30 serious injuries and one fatality.

A team from Central Trades and Services machine shop undertook a pilot project in 2014 using the Byrd’s Pyramid concept. They called themselves the Pyramid Builders and created a process to seek out hazards, finding upwards of 1,000 unsafe behaviours and conditions in their area over six weeks. The team then developed tactics to eliminate the behaviours and conditions. The pilot was a tremendous success and as such, we’ll

replicate this team’s experience in all 11 business units this year. We’ll call the method the Pyramid Builders System as a way to recognize the work of the pilot team and as a reminder of our goal.

Through 2015, more information will be shared with you on ‘building our pyramid’ from the bottom up. Until then,

remember that our Journey to Zero – the formal health and safety program at ArcelorMittal – can only keep us as safe as our individual and collective behaviours allow. Stop to notice any possible hazards; Challenge yourself, co-workers or supervisors if you see unsafe conditions; and always Choose the safest way forward.

Health and Safety is ArcelorMittal’s top priority, not only here in Dofasco, but worldwide. To this end, our corporate Health and Safety team launched 11 Fatality Prevention Standards in 2010 and required all sites to reach level three status out of five possible levels of compliance for all standards. Through the efforts of many employees and business units, ArcelorMittal Dofasco recently became one of the first ArcelorMittal sites to achieve level three status.

The Fatality Prevention Standards focus on the high-risk activities most commonly resulting in fatalities around the ArcelorMittal Group. The Health

and Safety team based in Europe visits sites around the world to conduct audits of compliance to these standards. So far, ArcelorMittal Dofasco has successfully completed two audits which have resulted in several improvements to our Health and Safety Program. Changes resulting from the first audit in March of 2011 were communicated via a Health & Safety Alert and the changes resulting from the January 2014 audit will be communicated in the same manner shortly.

Although we have not had a fatality on our site since 2006, we have had serious incidents occur where the root cause was attributed to one of the standards, primarily Working at Heights, Isolation and Confined Spaces. In order to continue our excellent health and safety performance, we need to ensure

that we have proper training, follow the approved procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment each and every time our job involves these high -risk activities.

But it’s not only compliance to standards that is important when it comes to preventing accidents. We need to continue to apply the principles of “Stop. Challenge. Choose.” Everyone is capable of spotting a lapse of judgment or a potential hazard, don’t be afraid to speak up and stop unsafe work.

While ArcelorMittal Dofasco has already met the global health and safety requirements, we are now aiming for level five, the highest standard. So far, no ArcelorMittal site has reached this level and we want to pave the way to continue to be a benchmark site for other steel facilities around the world.

Whiteout Winter2014 got off to a frigid start, challenging our employees and the industry to weather polar vortices, frozen pipes, icy conditions and blocked shipping channels well into the spring. Nevertheless, departments managed to minimize the impact on the business without any significant Health and Safety incidents.

Personal Best kickoff Once the holiday season was over and the days started getting longer, hundreds of colleagues enrolled in the Personal Best program offered through the Integrated Health department. The trainers helped employees define and strive towards their 2014 health and wellness goals.

Suppliers and contractors reach one year without LTI ArcelorMittal Dofasco works closely with many suppliers and contractors, so in February we were pleased to recognize an important Health and Safety milestone for our third party vendors—one year without a Lost Time Injury.

Impressive year-end results In February, our 2013 Q4 and year-end results were shared, revealing outstanding performance. Highlights included a best ever 0.44 lost time frequency result, outstanding prime shipments as well as total shipments, excellent quality metrics in reapplies and prime yield and record on-time delivery performance. Dofasco also ranked first in North America for overall customer service satisfaction and first for EBITDA per metric ton shipped.

Olympic silver for Dofasco familyThroughout the nation people gathered to watch Canada compete in the Sochi Winter Olympics. Mark Towers (Cokemaking) was in Russia cheering on his daughter, Kirsten Moore-Towers, as she won silver in the team pairs skating competition. Mark proudly brought the Olympic medal back to ArcelorMittal Dofasco to share his daughter’s success with colleagues.

Automotive awards and accolades March was a fruitful month for the company which saw ArcelorMittal win some of the industry’s most significant awards in the automotive sector from partners like Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Automotive News. From customer satisfaction and quality, innovation and supply chain partnership to young talent, our company came out on top.

Around the Bay Road Race Our community spirit was in full force in late March when 109 Team Orange members took to the streets to walk, run and race for better health while raising $23,000 for St Joseph’s Healthcare.

Health and Safety Day: April 28 An important event on the ArcelorMittal calendar each year is Health and Safety Day. Typically this event takes place in late April and serves as an opportunity for employees, contractors and suppliers to recommit to working safely. In 2014, Dofasco celebrated our best ever safety performance, which can partly be attributed to our unique Stop. Challenge. Choose. approach. On Health and Safety Day, we were all reminded that working safely is not only about eliminating hazards, but also about identifying and controlling risks in the first place.

Q1 results show continued improvementArcelorMittal Dofasco celebrated another Health and Safety milestone at the end of the first quarter and achieved an even lower lost time frequency of .34, which was a 23 per cent improvement over our best ever annual result of .44 for 2013. In addition, Q1 2014 yielded the best EBITDA for a Q1 in Dofasco’s history, broke the prime shipment record, as well as the finishing prime production record and achieved world class quality for galvanize exposed.

Personal Best successThe Personal Best team ended the 2014 program with their best ever results. In just five months, 314 participants exercised and dieted away a total of 600lbs of fat.

Corporate Knights award In June, ArcelorMittal Canada was named one of Canada’s Top Foreign Corporate Citizens for 2013. The award, from Corporate Knights, is presented to corporations with substantial operations in Canada. Our company was recognized for its leadership on social responsibility and corporate citizenship.

Being one of Canada’s bestDuring the summer, our team learned that ours was the only steel company in Canada and one of only a small group of elite, advanced manufacturing firms that met rigorous criteria to be named a winner of the Canada Excellence Gold Level Award in the Healthy Workplace category. ArcelorMittal Dofasco also achieved Level 1 certification in the Progressive Excellence Program® Mental Health at Work® category. Both awards were given by Excellence Canada, a national organization dedicated to recognizing organizational excellence.

Healthy minds and bodiesArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Employee and Family Assistance Program and Lifestyle Programs offer support, encouragement and resources for mind and body health.

Candice Olson [email protected]

Securing work/life balance is not always easy, but ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Employee and Family Assistance Program can help. Juggling career, home and family responsibilities can be challenging, which is why at ArcelorMittal Dofasco we are boosting our mental health resources and extending them to casual employees and family members.

When it comes to mental health, many people find it difficult to simply ask for help. “Unfortunately, there’s a lot of stigma attached to mental health,” says Rebecca Kwiatkowski, Manager of Integrated Health, ArcelorMittal Dofasco. “Historically people fear what they don’t understand and refer to people needing emotional support or mental assistance as weak, when actually it is a very common issue affecting many Canadians.”

Statistics show that one in

three Canadians will face mental health issues in their lifetime, a figure that the government and private sector are trying to address by providing more robust mental health services covering a wider range of topics. Whether you have experienced a traumatic event or you need financial or relationship advice, the Employee and Family Assistance Program has an array of programs to meet your needs. Permanent and casual employees, as well as their family members, can use our confidential Employee and Family Assistance Program to get counseling, practical help and advice with a range of issues such as:

• Counseling (including alcohol and drug counseling)

• Psychiatric/psychological help• Anger management• Financial/legal counselors• Stress management• Marital, relationship or

parenting issues• Grief and loss• Depression and anxiety

“Issues that seem to be on the rise in our society include divorce and parenting a blended family,” adds Rebecca. “Many people also need financial and practical help to look

after elderly relatives. Children also sometimes face bullying

Dofasco’s Employee

and Family Assistance Program is provided by third-party vendor, Homewood Human Solutions. Their services are free to ArcelorMittal Dofasco permanent/casual employees and family members. In addition, services are completely

confidential, and no personal information is passed on to the company.“It’s important that

employees understand that no one at ArcelorMittal Dofasco is made aware when they reach out for help,” says Rebecca. “Homewood Human Solutions provides their services separately and confidentially. Often the first step is the most difficult, so we ensure that employees and their families can get the help they need quickly and discreetly.”

Although traumatic events frequently leave people needing counseling, sometimes depression and anxiety can build up over time and also result in serious problems. In today’s fast-paced world with mobile phones, email and social media, it can be difficult to “switch off,” so many companies are developing

stress management programs to help their employees relax.

At ArcelorMittal Dofasco, we offer additional resources like our three on site fitness centres as well as the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre and its Fitness Centre. Sometimes playing a team sport, walking a nature trail or simply chatting to a friend can help you wind down after a shift or during times of stress.

New wellness initiatives offered this year include: • Yoga for Busy Minds

- starting in February• Mindfulness meditation class

- starting in March• The Health and Safety fair in

November (Nov. 17 - 18) with a focus on mental health and resiliency

Each year since 1949, a distinguished group has gathered to celebrate Dofasco employees who have reached the milestones

of 25 and 40 years of service to the company and to induct them into the prestigious Quarter Century Club (QCC). On

December 3, the newest members of the Quarter Century and 40-Year Clubs were welcomed into the club at an evening celebration at the Michelangelo Banquet Centre. This year, we honoured 69 colleagues entering the Quarter Century Club and 93 marking the admirable milestone of 40 years of service.

The evening is a much anticipated event, with food and drink and hearty congratulations all around, highlighted with a commemorative portrait book, a special section of The Hamilton Spectator and service awards.

The first annual dinner was held at the Royal Connaught Hotel in 1949 when 54 employees were inducted. D.F. (Dan) Hassel, Vice President of Employee Relations, was Chairman of the meeting, a position he held until 1972.

At each meeting, the QCC celebration is called to order with the ringing of the Club bell by the evening’s Master of Ceremonies. The gavel’s inscription reads: “Presented by D.F. Hassel to The Dofasco Quarter Century Club.”

After more than 100 years, the tradition continues as the employees of ArcelorMittal Dofasco tip their hats each year to the newest members of this distinguished Club.

A tip of our hatTo this year’s inductees: Thank you for your service and congratulations on your achievement!

John Dailey (Hot Mill) celebrated 40-years service. His daughter Kaila Dailey (Millwright Apprentice) accompanied him to the celebration.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco annual family Christmas party Our employees and their families celebrated at the ArcelorMittal Dofasco annual family Christmas party December 14. Continuing a 78-year tradition, about 5,000 guests packed the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre for one of the largest annual corporate Christmas parties in Canada. In addition to visiting with Santa Claus, guests enjoyed meeting Disney princesses, face painting, bouncy castles and a gift for every child under 13. Entertainment included musicians, a magic show and the President’s Choice Superdogs. A big thank you to the 200 volunteers that made the party possible.

Eleven-month old Brock Porter and his mom Jacqueline Porter visit Santa Claus. They were at the party with dad and husband, Dane Porter (Pickling and Cold Rolling)

Six-year-old Janu Radesh, daughter of Nupura Krishnamoorthy (Galvanize Technology) was the winner of the annual e-card contest. AMD President and CEO Sean Donnelly presents her with her prize, a full kit of art supplies.

Cirque du Soleil facilitated the January 15 event for more than 200 volunteer participants representing 30 community groups from across the Games host sites. Here, the focus group representing Hamilton pauses for a photo.
