Our state’s role in vetting presidential candidates is a responsibility Iowans take seriously. We’re looking forward to three fun nights of networking and bowling! This year, our annual Chamber Bowl event is so popular we had to add another night. Teams of six are bowling February 2nd, 3rd, & 4th at Mystic Lanes. There are prizes for high and low scoring teams and individuals, an award for best dressed team, and lots of fantastic items up for grabs in our nightly raffle drawing! Each night of bowling is followed by a delicious dinner, catered by Hy-Vee East.

If your business would like to bowl, please contact Colleen at the Chamber to sign up or be placed on a waiting list. You can email her at [email protected].

I’m a little BLUE…Ever since Mason City embarked on the Blue Zones Project® certification process, I’ve been trying to adopt a wellness lifestyle using the BZ Power 9 Principles®. I’m not there yet, but I have managed to increase my natural movement, go to church more regularly, and make meeting for coffee with my “moai” a calendar priority. What’s more, I do have an increased sense of well-being.

I hope a Gallup pollster will call me this month as they begin collecting input for Mason City’s 2016 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. I am eager to share all the positive changes in our community thanks to the Blue Zones project. Here’s a sampling:

•Work sites have made positive changes to enhance the well-being of employees. •Our city council has made a huge commitment to improving our recreational trail system. •Community gardens are flourishing—and are even providing fresh produce for the Community Kitchen and Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. •Local restaurants offer Blue Zones menu selections to help us make healthy choices. •Our schools are more intentional about teaching and modeling healthy habits for our youth.

If you get a call from Gallup, I hope you’ll share your own positive Blue Zones experiences. In the meantime, I’m going to keep on working toward a darker shade of BLUE!

Ty has spent 20 years bringing together country music and agriculture news in a way no one else can! He’s passionate about educating the next generation about the importance of connecting farm and business, and is looking forward to passing that message along at this year’s Ag Breakfast.

TUpcoming 2016 Lunch & Learns

Continuing education is an important part of our mission at the Chamber, and February’s Lunch & Learns offer two very unique ideas for improving your workplace.

February 9: “2016 is the year I discover the benefits of a diverse workforce!”This session, presented by Opportunity Village, aims to educate employers about the benefits of hiring people with different abilities. The Chamber hears from many local employers who say they are struggling to find qualified, dependable workers. This is an opportunity to widen your hiring pool by breaking down any barriers that might prevent a great candidate from applying for a job.

February 23: “2016 is the year I move to a standing workstation!”Tired of sitting at your desk all day? Why not stand instead! Chad Kozitza, of Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa, has all you need to know about transitioning to a standing desk. If it’s something you’re thinking of trying, this is a great chance to learn about the health benefits, and consider some options for converting your current desk.

Registration is just $10 for Chamber members. To register for these sessions, or for more information on any of the Chamber’s upcoming Lunch & Learns, contact Colleen Frein.

Several businesses that joined the Chamber in the 1960s continue to thrive. We appreciate their loyal support.

• Edwards-Brandt & Associates – 1960• Fred T. Fenchel Entertainment Agency – 1960• Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel – 1960• Holtz Realty – 1960• McDonald’s Restaurant – 1960• Pappajohn, Shriver, Eide & Nielsen, P.C. – 1960• Birdsall’s Ice Cream — 1961• Blazek Electric, Inc. – 1965• Hy-Vee West – 1965

Fred Fenchel and his wife, Ila Mae, are pictured here with country music legend Johnny Cash in Nashville. Fred was inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 for his service to the state’s entertainment industry. Among his many volunteer efforts, Fred has served as a Chamber Ambassador for 56 years and

has been active on the North Iowa Band Festival Committee.

Chuck Hogan and Al Bremer merged the former McCauley-Bremer Funeral Home and Hogan’s Colonial Chapel in 1968, utilizing this original building (shown as it appeared in 1940). David Moore purchased the business in 2001 and currently operates Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel locations in Mason City, Clear Lake, Manly, Northwood, Nora Springs, and Memorial Park Cemetery, Crematory & Funeral Home. The business is expanding in 2016 and will introduce a lunch room to its Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel location in Mason City.

2015-2016 YIELD Graduates

Since 2003, the Mason City Chamber of Commerce has provided leadership training for area youth. The YIELD program (Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development) is an investment in our future citizens and leaders that will surely yield huge benefits for North Iowa. This program has become a model for youth leadership programs and has been replicated in other communities, including some in our region.

In Mason City, YIELD participation is limited to high school juniors from Mason City High School, Newman High School, and the Alternative School. These students were identified as good students and good citizens who are likely to emerge as future community leaders. Thank you to Principals Dan Long, Tony Adams, and Dave Ciccetti for their continued support.

Special thanks to this year’s YIELD supporters who provided the professional expertise and financial resources necessary to continue this important program.

Enhancing Mason City’s presence on TripAdvisor Did you know that 76% of travelers cite travel review websites as the “most

useful” sources of information when researching and planning a trip? Online travel reviews are more influential now than ever before and travel planning is dominated by online

resources. Recognizing this trend, VMC recently enhanced Mason City’s presence on TripAdvisor®, the world’s most popular

and largest travel community, by claiming Mason City’s “Destination Overview” within the TripAdvisor site. This sponsorship opportunity enables VMC to maintain control of the content being presented to users who are considering a visit to our community.

Highly targeted banner ads, photos, videos, direct links to the VMC website and more allow VMC to tell Mason City’s story in an easy-to-navigate format. VMC staff will maintain the page with regular content updates, providing users with immediate access to valuable and relevant information – including the Mason City Travel Guide.

This content, placed alongside the unbiased reviews and opinions posted by more than 32 million unique monthly visitors on TripAdvisor, allows VMC to best reach an engaged and passionate travel audience while they actively consider traveling to our community.

During the first month of this campaign, the Mason City community overview page received 164 views. Mason City’s destination overview page on TripAdvisor can be viewed at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-

g38147-Mason_City_Iowa-Vacations.html Visit Mason City also recently hosted a TripAdvisor education session for local tourism partners. 18 attendees

representing Mason City attractions, restaurants and hotels learned about the importance of peer-to-peer reviews. Guest speakers Crystal Shellhart from the Holiday Inn Express and Jack King from Stoney Creek Hospitality were provided with helpful advice from others who have become very active in managing their own business’ TripAdvisor presence.

The variety of sport venues and facilities, combined with the convenience of getting to and around North Iowa bring a great share of visitors and sports participants to our area.

Sporting events in Cerro Gordo County provide a major boost to the local economy. In Mason City alone, Visit Mason City worked with 40 sporting events during FY 2014-2015, which resulted in an estimated 49,538 visitors to the community, leaving behind over $4.1 million in visitor spending!

The North Iowa Sports Authority, a partnership between Visit Mason City / Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, is seeking area coaches, sport event coordinators and sport facility operators who are interested in learning more about grant funding (up to $50,000) available to help fund sporting events that attract tourists to the area.

The focus of the North Iowa Sports Authority is to promote sports in Cerro Gordo County by attracting and supporting quality athletic sporting events that generate visitor spending in the area. More specifically, the objective is to attract, retain, and expand area-sporting events that attract visitors to the area and generates visitor spending. A visitor is an individual that lives beyond 90-

miles of Cerro Gordo County.

"We're looking for partners from the sporting community – coaches, travel teams, sports facilites – anyone who’s interested in sports to contact us to learn more about this grant opportunity and how they may be able to benefit from these services," said Lindsey James, Visit Mason City Project Coordinator. "We can help them turn an idea into reality and get a new event started or help them find money to grow an existing event. Ultimately, the goal is to generate revenue for the event and increase visitor spending in Cerro Gordo County. It's a win-win for both parties."

Past sports grant partners include Midstates Horse Shows, Indoor Amateur 3-D Archery, Bike Criterium Road Race, Iowa State LeMans Snowmobile Race, and Throwdown River City Softball Tournament.

To learn more about the upcoming Sports Blitz, what the North Iowa Sports Authority can do for you and how we can help ensure a successful sporting event contact Visit Mason City at [email protected] / 641-422-1663.

Shaun Arneson, Vice President, Existing Business and Project Management said “Based on research, existing business and industry account for over 70% or more of new jobs and capital investment. It is important that we show our appreciation for their investment and contribution to our regional economy and be a resource for them to remain competitive in our global economy.”

Arneson and other North Iowa Corridor staff will be conducting in-depth interviews with major

employers in manufacturing, ag-related and service-related business in the region to gather information. The same questionnaire will be used for each company visit to help identify individual business needs, concerns and suggestions about the local business climate. The North Iowa Corridor has done similar interviews in past years. By utilizing the Synchronist Business Information System, a software tool to organize, analyze and report company information, the Corridor will gain invaluable insight into the dynamics of the local economy.

Any and all company information gathered will be kept strictly confidential and results will be

in an aggregate form. An annual report will be compiled and distributed to the companies which will track trends over time.

ach year, YIELD students complete a Community Impact Project as a graduation requirement. This year’s class decided to help people in need of clothing, developing a program to place clothing racks around the city – a project they named “Clothe Our Community.” The concept of their project is simple – everyone is invited to donate pre-

washed, gently used items to the cause; anyone in need is welcome to take from the clothing racks.

The students have been collecting seasonal clothing donations since the end of November at the Commerce Center. Thanks to generous contributions from the community and local businesses, students distributed racks of clothing to Lincoln Intermediate and the Community Kitchen of North Iowa as part of their “Clothe Our Community” community impact project in early January.

Representatives at each location will help monitor the racks, and the YIELD group will check in periodically to ensure they are being maintained. The public is invited to come to the two locations throughout the year to add/remove clothing from the racks at their leisure, during open hours. It is the intent that youth sized clothing will be donated to Lincoln Intermediate and adult sized clothing to the Community Kitchen.

Blue Zones Project ®

If you get a phone call…

One of Mason City’s benefits as a Certified Blue Zones Project ® community is the annual survey information we receive. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measures the state of Mason City well-being across five elements:

• Purpose—liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals

• Social—Having supportive relationships and love in your life

• Financial—Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security

• Community—Liking where you live, feeling safe, and having pride in your community

• Physical—Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily

Our city council, community, and business leaders can use the data we receive from the Well-Being Index (WBI) to set priorities that will improve community well-being.

Gallup will begin collecting data this month through telephone surveys. Although we admit most citizens are weary of all the political surveys and calls we’ve experienced over the past several months, if Gallup calls, we hope you’ll answer the phone AND share how being selected as one of the first Blue Zones Project communities in Iowa has helped to move us in the right direction!
