A great example of this commitment to life could be seen by Brother Knight Tony Rivera-Silva, his wife Crystal, and their three children all marching together. When I think of Valentine’s Day and Saint Valentine, I think of contemporary culture things: buying flowers for my wife, sharing a nice dinner, et cetera. When you read about Saint Valentine the story couldn’t be farther from those idealistic, material notions. While factual data is sparse, most historians agree that he was a priest martyred for his faith in the 3rd Century. As Knights we should look to Saint Valentine as an example: a man willing to go out on a limb for his faith. Today, the stakes aren’t as high, but the risk is still tangible. When you ask strangers to join our order or invite inactive Brother Knights to events you expose yourself to the potential for rejection. Look to Saint Valentine for encouragement and go out on a limb for your Order. Invite others to experience the goodness of the Knights of Columbus.

Brothers, January was an eventful month. It featured the inauguration of the 45th President and the 44th March for Life, which included the first ever address by the Vice-President of the United States. January 2017 will certainly be in the history books. While what will be said about the next four years remains to be seen, several

positive changes have already taken place. President Trump issued an executive order blocking funding to international health groups that provide or promote abortions. During this time of change and transition, we should be a voice for unity and peace and do what we can to bring America together in small ways. Recruiting new Brother Knights should always be in our minds, and we will have “meet and greet” weekends at the parishes and an open house in March. As always we will need volunteers to help with these events. The Virginia Bingo commission audited our bingo program again and we have some work to do. I will be working with the bingo manager to ensure that we are in compliance with the regulations. We plan to have further compliance discussions with the bingo commission and I will provide updates to the council with those are complete.

Brother Tony and Crystal Rivera-Silva On January 27, 2017 marked the 44th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. This event was a powerful example of what can be done with a peaceful protest. Many young and old people marched to show that we

must protect the most vulnerable of us all. A great example of this commitment to life could be seen by Brother Knight Tony Rivera-Silva, his wife Crystal, and their three children all marching together. This was certainly a long day for the little ones leaving first thing in the morning and not getting home until well after 9 PM, but they were all smiling every time I saw them that day. Please take a minute to thank Brother Tony and Crystal for their example and congratulate them as our February Family of the Month.

Sir Knight Carroll Kelley Once again, SK Carroll organized bus transportation, parking, and dinner for 41 people that atended the March for Life in Washington, D.C. I am sure you see all the great things that Carroll does for the Council and

Assembly. He is always willing to contribute wherever there is a need, in as big or as small a capacity as needed. He serves the Council as Advocate and the Assembly as Color Corps Commander. Carroll also serves St. Jerome Parish in many ways, and I am sure he does so with the same tireless energy he brings to council events. Please join me in congratulating our February Knight of the Month Sir Knight Carroll Kelley.

Life Insurance as a Gift?

The initial reaction for many people when you mention life insurance as a gift is a quick step back and a questioning stare. “How morbid,” they think. While it may seem that way when you first mention it, life insurance is really a thoughtful gift that can be a financial

life preserver in tough times.

The problem with life insurance is the general perception. Many think of death instead of the great benefits it provides, and the security that it offers – even while you’re alive. Life insurance should be thought of as a precautionary protective measure for a family unit. The purchase of this product can mean saving your home, sending your children to college, and preserving your spouse’s quality of life in the event of your death.

One of the times you may want to purchase life insurance for someone is when a family has a new baby. It’s a great, low-cost way to set money aside for the future (i.e. college tuition, housing, business start-up, etc.). Of greater importance, it ensures these children will have insurance as adults, in case an illness later in life makes him or her uninsurable.

Newlyweds are also ideal recipients for life insurance. As they join their lives and financial responsibilities, young couples need to make sure that their early investments are fully protected. If something were to happen to one of them, the other may be faced with serious financial hardship. A life insurance policy is an ideal way to ensure their future and protect their assets.

As nontraditional as it may be, life insurance is a wise and caring gift to purchase for many people.

Virginia Knights of Columbus Support March For Life. On 27 January 2017, hundreds

of thousands of pro-life marchers packed Constitution Avenue during the 2017 March for

Life in Washington, D.C., with new hope supplied by Vice President Mike Pence, the first

sitting vice president to personally address the crowd since the March began in 1974.

"Life is winning in America, and today is a celebration in that progress," Pence told the

crowd. "Let this movement be known for love," he added. "Not anger. For compassion. Not

confrontation." Other speakers included presidential advisor Kellyanne Conway, New

York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst and many others. As has been the case since the very first

March for Life in 1974, Virginia Knights were the backbone of the event, providing hundreds of marshals to guide

the march safely through the streets of the nation's capital. For those unable to make it to Washington, D.C. other pro-

life marches were held this year in 56 other cities around the nation.

Our next meeting will be held on 7 February with a dining-in at 6:30 PM followed by the meeting. Please join us for the dining in, bring your favorite dish, and share the evening with our Sir Knights and their spouses. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend as both Donna and I will be enjoying the Grand Cayman Island that week. Captain Rick Schrim will fill in. If you have any business to present before the assembly, please contact Rick before the meeting. The March for Life took place on January 27th 2017 in Washington, D.C. What a wonderful event to show our support for the unborn. If you were not able to attend this year, please put this event on your calendar for January 2018. It usually occurs sometime between 21-26 January and it is an important event to show solidarity for the Order and our faith for the right of the unborn. The Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics takes place on 4 February. If you are not participating in the plunge yourself and want to donate to the Special Olympics, I will be doing the plunge and looking for sponsors. You can go to the Special Olympics web site to sponsor me at the following link: https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/FundraisingPage.aspx?registrationID=3650807&langPref=en-CA The next 4th Degree Exemplification is 1 April in Manassas. This will be a one day event featureing a dinner right after the exemplification. Plan to be there by 9:30 AM and leave by 4:00 PM. Now is the time to start talking to members of our council that are not 4th Degree Knights and convince them to join us in the Assembly. If you know of a brother Knight that wants to join the 4th degree, please have him contact me or the Faithful Captain Rick Schirm We established The Assembly Nominating Committee to nominate Assembly Officers for 2017-2018. Committee members are Jim Healy (Chairman), Dom Bevacqua, Kiet Nguyen, Julio Santiago, and David Brin. Please contact one of the committee members if you are interested in serving as an Officer next year. During the month of December and January we lost a couple of long standing Sir Knights. George Hart a 50 year member and 25 as a SK and Robert Yacobi a 67 year member and 50 years as a SK. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. Thanks to each and every one for your service to your council, assembly, and parish.

Sir Knight Stephen Paul Raschke Sr., IPSD, Faithful Navigator, Father Bader Assembly 2430.
