Greetings Silver Knight Family!
Our second semester is well underway and we are actively moving forward in all phases of our academics! We have a lot to work on, including preparation for our state testing in the spring. Our teachers have already begun preparation with standards based lessons to get our students dialed-‐in and ready. Our goal is to eclipse our previous collective scores and set the bar for next year’s students to reach!
This goal will without question require a collective and coordinated effort from all stakeholders. Each aspect of the day is important, from daily attendance to school/classroom diligence, to getting to bed on time to ensure proper rest. Consistency is the key. With that said, I want to encourage parents to really put an emphasis on reading. You have heard me say many times how important reading is. Reading is the foundation of all subjects, and common core standards as well as California state testing (which is based on common core) are requiring students to have a strong reading base to be successful. We will have a heavy concentration on reading, and we ask that you do the same at home. Give your children as many opportunities to read or tell you about what they have read. Develop conversations based on the information that they tell you. You’ll be surprised at what you can get from good conversations!
I am hopeful that we are all in one accord on the upcoming semester. Keep in touch with your child’s teacher and follow the progress of your child as well as ask questions for insight. Let’s work together to give our students every opportunity for success. We are one! WE ARE... SILVER KNIGHTS!!!
Respectfully,
G. Titus Principal

FIRST GRADE Hello parents, First grade is excited to start our Animal Project. We have been learning about animal teams and adaptations. Each class is now working on choosing one habitat for their students to focus on for the remainder of the project. Our project will culminate with students working in teams to create a diorama of their chosen habitat. Your child’s teacher will be sending home information regarding any donations they may need for their dioramas. First grade will be taking a _ield trip to the Desert Discovery Center in Barstow. Mrs. Caravas, Ms. Sullivan, and Ms Hankerson’s classes will be going on Wednesday, Febrauary 22nd. Mrs. Denson, Ms. Dillard, and Ms. Reynante’s class will be going on Thursday, February 23rd. Due to the size of the Discovery Center Mrs. Pattie will be splitting her class, so half will attend on the 22nd and half will attend on the 23rd. Mrs. Pattie will be sending out more information regarding what day each student will be attending. We look forward to this great learning experience! We hope everyone has a great month! Take care, First Grade Team
SECOND GRADE
Hello RP Families and Friends,
Our second grade students have been diligently working hard academically as we have begun the third quarter of school. There are many different math skills such as money, measurement, place value, and time that your child will practice and learn this quarter. Also, there are many language arts skills like text features, characters response to challenges, writing informative text, and identifying the main topic to prepare for our upcoming Chocolate Factory. Students will get to enjoy the book and also the movie of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We want you all to mark your calendar and save the date for The Second Grade Chocolate Factory on April 7th. This event will be AMAZING!!!!

MUSIC NEWS..... PAGE 10
Riverside Preparatory Elementary 19175 Third Street, Oro Grande, CA 92368
Happy February Parents!
We have several exciting projects going on in the Third Quarter.
Kinder and First Grade are learning about various instruments and using them to represent different animals. They are also singing simple songs as well as learning to build melody patterns using colors as inspiration.
Grades 2 through 5 are working on separate projects in Mr. Snedegar's and Ms. Simonian's class, but both projects focus on playing piano, identifying notes on the keyboard and on the music 5-‐line staff, and/or writing melodies.
In Mr. Snedegar's class, Grades 3 through 5 have began a top secret mission to rescue emoji people (yellow, stretchy smile men) by playing a "musical code" properly into one of the piano stations, or in other words: passing their _irst assigned song. If your child comes home with a yellow smile man, you will know he or she has passed their _irst song. (If you want to view the top secret mission yourself, you can look up "emojiville mission impossible" on YouTube.) Second Grade is focusing on identifying the names of the keys on the piano keyboard.
In Ms. Simonian's class, grades 3-‐5 are starting a melody writing/piano playing project where the students will choose a starting rhythm, then put their own note names (pitches, such as A, B, C, D, E, F, and G) on the rhythm. They will then learn to play their own melody at the piano, and then write their melody in real music staff notation. Second Grade will also be starting piano melody project, but with simpler rhythms, and without writing their notes on the staff yet this quarter. We can't wait to see what the students come up with!
Happy 2017,
Ms. Simonian and Mr. Snedegar

THIRD GRADE
Hello third grade,
This month we will be making demonstrations and performing experiments to learn about science. Ask your child about the amazing things they are learning. Now that we are half way through the year we are rolling on to more complex concepts in all subjects. Remind students to practice reading and math every day at home, even if they don’t have work sent home.Riverside Prep will be holding our annual science expo on March 14th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, in your child’s classroom. This is when you get to come see all the hard work that has been done. Flyers will be sent out closer to the expo as a reminder.Have a wonderful February and as always, if you have questions or concerns, you are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher by call, text, or email.
Sincerely,The Awesome Third Grade Teachers of Riverside Prep Elementary School
FOURTH GRADE
Hello Parents, Another month has passed and this year is flying by fast. Fourth grade is sti l l working on their scientist b i o g r a p h i e s . W e h a v e b e e n researching like crazy and are now putting that information into our drafts. You will be able to get a glimpse of it during the Science Expo coming in March. More information on that will be going home soon. Fourth grade will be having Healthy Heart Parties on February 14th. Each teacher has sent home his/her not ices for the event. Please remember that food items donated for parties need to be store bought. We still need Coffee-mate creamer bottles for our science biographies. They should be 1 quart in size, empty and cleaned. We will need these by March 3rd to ensure that we can complete the project in time for the Science Expo. Don’t forget to have your child read at home! The last day to test for AR is March 8th. Thank you so much for your continued support,
The Fourth Grade Team
