IES Gazette February 2017

Welcome to our February 2017 addition of our IES gazette. The next few issues will be featuring editorials from members of our Senior and Middle Leadership Team.

Firstly, for those of you who do not know, my name is Natalie and I am the Centre Manager here at IES. I also have the role of Exams Coordinator and Associate Teacher, with my lead subjects being Humanities, French and PSHE! (Yes, I am a busy bee!)

‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,’ Nelson Mandela. This is something I firmly believe in. Many young people (and even older ones) do not value their education, but I cannot stress enough how important it is. Education opens up so many windows of opportunity and truly helps you to achieve your dreams. I for one love learning and even now after doing GCSE’s, A-Levels and a Degree still want to push myself to achieve more. It is true what they say – ‘every day is a school day’.

This month’s gazette features many educational visits and opportunities that students at IES participate in. Our students are lucky enough to take part in both classroom and offsite activities, all of which support them on their educational journey. We make learning fun, and I know that this is reflected by the students’ attitudes to school ‘(IES rocks)’!

We are proud to hold a ‘Healthy Schools’ status at IES, and strive to encourage our young people to lead a healthy lifestyle. Before our February half term, students had the opportunity to take part in a smoothie tasting day; be sure to check out the photos on the following pages and see if you can tell by the student’s faces as to whether or not they enjoyed the smoothies!

Charlie has been working hard on her café, which is based at our Long Street site. ‘Charlie’s Coffee and Cakes’ boasts some delicious cookies/cakes along with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. All donations go towards our charity SENDIES! If you are interested in visiting the café please contact the school to enquire about opening times.

We have been working alongside Coventry University Media student, Alex, who has been delivering media workshops to students. There are some fantastic pictures inside the gazette which were taken by our very talented Whitney Franklin, who is a keen photographer. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled in next months gazette too, as Alex will be working with more of our students on different projects!

I hope you enjoy reading our gazette as much as we enjoy creating it.

Best wishes,

Natalie Lodge

Centre Manager, Exams Coordinator and Associate Teacher

The 'Get to know the IES Team' feature is where each month a different member of the IES team will be interviewed for you to find out more about them. This month we interviewed Chloe.

Q: So, how long have you been working at IES for, and who are you keyworker for?

A: I only started in January this year so I am a newbie! I am keyworker for Lewis Humphriss.

Q: What's the best thing about working at IES?

A: Every day is different and presents new challenges, but seeing students happy and smiling makes my day.

Q: Who is your hero?

A: My hero is my dad, he works hard and plays hard which is a philosophy I have adopted.

Q: What do you do to relax?

A: Walking my dog, reading and playing Xbox

Q: If you were an animal for a day what animal would you choose, and why?

A: I would be a Kingfisher, hiding out in nature with the ability to fly and see the world from above-bliss.

Q: Name 3 things you couldn't live without.

A: Family, my bed and steak!

Q: What song best sums you up?

A: Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen.

Q: What is one thing you are looking forward to?

A: Travelling to Canada to see my friend get married.

Lewis: If you were a tree & you had to be chopped down & made into paper, which book would you like to be?

A: Lord of the rings by J.R.R Tolkien

Q: Final question, what's your funniest/best moment at IES?

A: My best moment is being asked to take on the role of English Lead. As for funny moments there are too many to mention, both students and staff have a wicked sense of humour.

If you would like to suggest questions for next month, write down your question and put it in the suggestion box at school, or, tell your keyworker who can pass it on to the Magazine Team.

Welcome to one of the newest features in the Gazette, simply titled 'Kitchen'. This is where you can read about the latest dish being cooked up at IES. You can find the recipe, pictures, and reviews below - giving you a great insight into the culinary skills at school. In this edition, Whitney cooked Chilli Con Carne.

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1kg/2¼lb lean beef mince 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 3 tbsp tomato purée 2 red chillies, thinly sliced, or 3-4 tsp dried chilli flakes 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander good shake of Worcestershire sauce 1 beef stock cube salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 x 400g can red kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 large bunch coriander leaves, roughly chopped

Method Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan with a lid and fry the onion and garlic until softened. Increase the heat and add the mince, cooking quickly until browned and breaking down any chunksof meat with a wooden spoon. Boil for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the tinned tomatoes, tomato purée, fresh chilli or chilli flakes, cumin, coriander and Worcestershire sauce and crumble in the stock cube. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to a simmer, cover with a lid and cook over a gentle heat for about 50 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally until the mixture is rich and thickened. Add the kidney beans and fresh coriander. Cook for a further ten minutes, uncovered, before removing from the heat, adding any extra seasoning if necessary. Serve with rice.

Here’s what some of our students have

Students have been learning about the life and works of Shakespeare. Did you know that

Shakespeare coined terms such as "snail's pace" and "heart on your sleeve"? You can see on the left here,

Charlie has written that "snail's pace means slow". Great knowledge, Charlie!

Above you can see Lloyd enjoying an afternoon of enrichment.

Charlie has been working hard making shortbread biscuits, check out the concentration! It was worth the

hard work as they were very tasty.

IES would like to welcome Daisie-Mae to IES.

Daisie-Mae has settled in well at IES, Long Street and she has been

working very hard. Keep up the hard work Daisie-Mae :)

been up to in their lessons this month.

Kaine has been working hard planning for his controlled assessment in English where he has to write about a film he

loves, this film was about the Kray Twins.

Students took part in a smoothie tasting assembly. Each pupil tried 5 different smoothies and had to guess what ingredients were in each one. There were some very tasty smoothies made by Kirsty and Gus (thank you!) and many students were surprised by the combinations of fruit that they liked and disliked!

Charlie and Michael played pool and bowling together as part of a team

building afternoon with Dawn and Gus. Below is the bowling score sheet, well

done Charlie for coming first! Great paired activity too.

The Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick

Offsite fun on a Thursday, we went to visit Warwick for the afternoon. We went to The Lord Leycester Hospital, it was never used as a medical hospital. The word hospital is used in its ancient sense meaning a charitable housing for the

needy in the war. (The Earl of Leicester established the home for the soldiers who served for Queen Elizabeth 1). Joe was very engaged as he saw where Dr Who and Pride and Prejudice was filmed. He used good communication skills and approached the gardener around the grounds. He was so engaged and asked her many questions. One of the main ones was are there any ghosts and she was able to tell him a number of stories. When it was time to go he

showed lovely manners saying ‘thank you for your time,’ which was lovely.

Above is Kamaladin working hard in his Maths lesson. He is using practical skills to balance the

scales so each end is of equal weight.

Charlotte had the opportunity to visit Ash End Farm, visiting the animals on the small family owned farm, before enjoying the play

centre, with the ‘big red air pillow’. Charlotte had a great experience, feeding the various animals by hand, and seeing the brand new, hours old baby goats! She had the opportunity to sit on one of the large horses too, jumping with excitement at the

chance.

Kaine has been working towards producing prep work for his GCSE Art & Design exam

work. He has chosen to focus on the theme of Architecture and has been

looking at artists such as Stephen Wiltshire and Laura Oldfield-Ford.

Charlie and Lorna went on an educational trip to Warwick Castle. Lorna was especially excited to meet the Princesses and they even braved the dungeons. Lorna is inspired to work here when

she is older.

Who said learning wasn't fun!

Lessons

In Spring Term 1 Rhylee was learning all about

the weather and nature within Art. During lessons we discussed different weather

types and created paintings and drawings demonstrating this. Rhylee then worked on

different printing techniques. For this task he used leaves as shown above.

Art Maths

Here is Charlotte in a Maths lesson using blocks to count in tens/hundreds and thousands.

Cooking Charlie learned how to make shortbread biscuits using numeracy and literacy skills through reading the recipe and weighing all of the ingredients prior to baking. They were delicious!

Our English teacher is promoting reading as much as possible and will be reintroducing in March a home / school reading diary.

We at IES would very much like you to record what your child is reading and read with your children as much as possible and get them to read to you.

Your input on this would be greatly appreciated.
