February 19
Let me start with a question: what is your favorite love song?
Your mind might drift to the radio dial - songs that you heard on summer nights in your adolescence or a favorite on a top 40 station now. For me, with my joy in the theater, I am drawn to some of the best of Broadway. My daughter’s favorite show is Hamilton and one of the powerful love songs from that show is That Would Be Enough. When I was her age, my passion was Phantom of the Opera with its soaring All I Ask of You. Shows I have shared the stage in provide me touchstone points for love too. Guido’s smarmy Only with You; Eponine’s A Little Drop of Rain; Hairspray’s Without Love; Nancy’s As Long as He Needs Me; even Old Joe’s Goodbye Old Girl - each have shared a part of what love, affection, and longing may hold.
Valentine’s Day focuses our cultural energy on love. This year, February concludes the Epiphany cycle, and our church energy focuses on the call to discipleship in Jesus’ teachings on the Sermon on the Mount. What a world this would be if our songs (and our lives) drew their inspiration from the kind of love that Jesus describes: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven… Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Christianity is rooted in a cosmic love story - God’s perfect love for an imperfect world draws the Messiah to us. God still loves us enough to draw near and to incarnate within. As the Body of Christ, we continue to tell (and perhaps even to sing!) this love story with a world that needs to hear it.
Blessings, A
Know a committee: SPRC
In 2017, the staff wants to take a moment to highlight the gifts and service of devoted lay people of our church. Many men and women share their gifts and talents through serving on committees on your behalf in the church. We also appreciate that there are some/many who have questions about the role of committees in church life and the decision-making process.
In February, we highlight the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). The Book of Discipline describes the work of SPRC to “reflect biblically and theologically on the role and work of the pastor(s) and staff as they carry out their leadership responsibilities.” That reflection includes both the practice of ministry here on campus and the balance of work, family and health. By analogy, SPRC serves as a personnel committee to supervise the work of our clergy and lay staff, but with a dependence on biblical values and an extended focus on the “whole person”. The SPRC provides the staff with job descriptions, Policies and Procedures, and feedback and evaluation. The SPRC serves as a liaison between the laity of the church and the pastoral staff. In their tasks to “promote unity”, strengthen gifts, set goals and priorities, and evaluate performance, they value your feedback. They love to hear where SVUMC needs to grow and what we are doing well.
