MESSAGE FROM THE ADMIN. TEAM
We had such a great January at Westview. We really focused on literacy with our Grade 1-4
Secret Spy Family Literacy night, our guest reader, Constable Wlaz, who read to students in
Grades 5-8, our annual Spelling Bee, our Pre-K and K Family Literacy event, and our Grade 4/5
Book club… and that doesn’t even include all the literacy-focused activities that were happening
each and every day in classrooms!
On top of that, our Grade 5-8s enjoyed curling at the Power Dodge Curling Center, Encompass
Fitness trainer, Kim Pastachuk, led Grade 6-8 students in some fun PE workouts, and Grade 7&8
students had an informative presentation about sexting from Constable Danielle Stephany.
February has begun with a blur of learning, mixed with extra-curricular activities like Basketball,
Blast, and Speech Arts!!! We will celebrate 100 days of school on Tuesday, February 13th.
Congratulations to students, staff, and parents for all their hard work thus far. Let’s make the
second half of the school year even better than the first half! We will continue to encourage
positive, meaningful learning for all at Westview School.
We say farewell this month to a long-time member of the Westview family. Carla Peterson, one
of our custodians and our former noon-hour supervisor, will be taking on a full-time position at
ECS. We will miss you, Mrs. Peterson! Thank you for all you have done for our school and our
students.
Just a reminder that winter may have more cold temperatures and snow in store for us yet.
Students will be outside at recesses and noon unless it is extremely cold. Please ensure that your
child is dressed for the weather. We also ask that students be careful when playing in the snow.
Digging tunnels that may collapse, throwing chunks of snow or ice, or sliding down snow piles
into traffic may result in injury or even death. Please play safely.
As the colder weather also brings many cold and flu viruses, if your child is sick, please keep
him/her home so the symptoms are not passed to other students and staff. When your child is
not going to be at school please call the school to make us aware of his/her absence. Thank
you!
Mrs. Haberstock & Mrs. Ostrander

You can send it to school on Friday, Feb. 9th or bring it to the Trade Show Saturday morning.
Soup will also be sold at lunch that day at the canteen. There is no admission and there will be
door prizes.
Most importantly, please come support our Trade Show on February 10th! Or send your husbands
to buy you something special for Valentine's Day!
DREAM, IMAGINE, BELIEVE PRESENTATIONS
The Westview School SCC is excited to announce that Kim Ehman will be at Westview on
February 12th to do presentations for students in Grades 1-8 in the afternoon and parents in the
evening. The sessions will begin by discussing respect and what it means, and then will move on
to attitudes—both positive and negative. The sessions are visual, interactive and “in your face.”
The combination of video and music will get students thinking and take them to a place where
they will be more open to hear the message. Sessions will allow students to relate to real-life
situations, the emphasis being to discern the difference between negative and positive behavior.
The Grade 1-5 presentation will be at 1:00 p.m. The Grade 5-8 presentation will be at 2:00 p.m.
A session for parents from Westview and other schools will be also held in the Multipurpose
Room at 7:00 p.m.
BASKETBALL
Senior Boys
The senior boys’ basketball team has been learning a lot of new drills and most importantly
having fun so far this season. We are very lucky to have so much interest and enthusiasm for
boys’ basketball at Westview School. We had our city-wide tournament on Friday, January
26th and Monday, January 29th. Our boys team took FIRST PLACE! Go Wildcats!! Go
Wildcats!!
Senior girls The senior girls’ team is made up of girls from Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. They have been working
hard at learning positions and building up the endurance necessary for basketball. Our league
tournament will be held at Sacred Heart/Pleasantdale on Feb. 9th and 10th. Mr. Charlton is excited
to have new recruits and to be off to a great start! We are going to have a great season! Districts
will be on March 1st with a location to be determined at a later date.
BLAST OF PIRATES
Yo, ho, ho… the time for Blast is finally here! This
is Westview's annual musical production for students in
Grades 6-8. Students read the script in mid-January.
Auditions will be held on Feb. 7th & 8th at noon. The cast
will be announced on Friday, February 9th at the end of the
day. There will also be many opportunities for other students
to get involved in the choir, sound, lighting and stage crew.
Mark your calendars with the date of the performance...
Thursday, April 26th & BLAST Dessert Theatre on
Friday, April 27th.
SPEECH ARTS
Thank you to all the students who are involved in speech arts. We have 18 students from
Kindergarten to Grade 8. In February, we will continue to practice our poems each week. The
speech arts portion of the Music Festival is from March 21-24. As soon as we hear exactly when
and where each of the students’ performances are, we will send the information to the parents.
You may also receive an email from the Music Festival. Parents, please take time to help your
child learn the poem they have picked so we can be ready for the Festival. We will also be
having an assembly where our Speech Arts students will perform their poem for the school.
Parents will be welcome to attend. Watch the March newsletter for details.
TELEMIRACLE FUNDRAISING
In February, our school is fundraising for Kinsmen Telemiracle. It is such a good cause to
support in our province and our school is especially thankful to them after their help with our
new playground. Our fundraising will be happening during Kinsmen Telemiracle Fundraising
week (Feb 12-16th) during recesses. Watch for more information in the At A Glance in
February.
KINDERGARTEN AND GRADE 1 SKATING
Kindergarten and Grade One classes are going skating soon. We will be going skating three
times. We have set the dates for Monday February 5th, Tuesday February 13th and
Wednesday, February 28th mark the dates on your home calendars as to not forget sending
skates and helmets. Skating will be from 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Please consider buying your
child skates or borrowing some for this if, your child does not already have skates. It is much
more fun to participate than watch. We had some skates donated to the school last year. If you
want to use them just let us know. The students will be required to wear a helmet when they go
on the ice. A bus is booked for the excursions, but parents are always needed to help tie skates.
You may even wish to take along your skates and join your child on the ice.
SASKTEL MEN’S PROVINCIAL CURLING TANKARD
On Thursday, Feb. 1st, our Grade 5-8 students will be going to Affinity Place to watch one of the
draws at the 2018 SaskTel Men's Provincial Curling Tankard. This is the best of men's curling in
the province and we want to show support for this exciting event in our community. It is also
timely, since our students just went curling as part of their PE classes last week. CurlSask is
providing the cost of transporting the students to Affinity Place and admission will be free.
Students are allowed to bring money to spend at the concession if they wish. Students will be at
the rink from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 11:30 a.m.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Kindergarten Registration for the 2018-2019 school year will be held sometime in late April or
early May. If you know of any new families to the Westview area who have children born in
2013 please have them call the school at 306-634-2241 to register for Kindergarten.
SPELLING BEE
The Westview Spelling Bee was held in the afternoon of January 26th. Students in Grades 5
through 8 competed in multiple rounds. The final round came down to Arabella Boloto and Lyle
Guino. Our 2018 winner was Lyle Guino. Congratulations to all of our competitors!
Winter Break takes place this year beginning with Family Day on
February 19th and continuing through to February 23rd.
Have a great break!
Classes resume for Kindergarten – Grade 8 Students on
Monday, February 26th.
PARENTS ARE INVITED TO A SESSION ABOUT INSPIRING
CHANGE WITH GUEST SPEAKER, KIM EHMAN, SPONSORED
BY THE WESTVIEW SCHOOL SCC.
Dream Imagine Believe…a healing journey is simply a “wake up experience”.
The concept is simple: treat others with respect, present a positive attitude and communication is key. The reality is that some people harbour negative attitudes, those negative attitudes are in turn expressed to others — more pointedly, in the
form of bullying. Those expressions may seem small, a practical joke or a sarcastic remark, but the effect on someone else may be detrimental. We do not know what
is going on inside someone else or what effect our actions have on their feelings or self-worth. The focus is not on bullying (the term is not mentioned), but more importantly on attitude and communication. Sessions are interactive and visual, designed to encourage thought and reflection, using realities faced in everyday life; personally, professionally and within the
community. The power of this journey creates awareness which in turn can inspire positive change for people in both personal and professional life.
KIM EHMAN’S BACKGROUND:
As a mom to four children, like everyone else, I watched the horrific events of the school shootings in Littleton, Colorado (Columbine) and Taber, Alberta, unfold through the media’s eyes back in 1999. It touched me deeply and it was then I
decided to do something—something to make a difference. My project began with a pilot at Craik School in 2000, and from there has grown into what it is today.
Location: Westview School
Date: Monday, February 12th
Time: 7:00-8:15 p.m.
