President’s Message by Jim Loomis

I am thinking about catching trout as I sit at my desk looking out at the newly fallen snow. A few days ago, I thought it was beginning to feel like spring. Early flowers were starting to appear and the tree buds were getting bigger, but it appears we will have to wait a week or two. In past years, we have had our first spring outing at Rocky Ford in late February or early March led by Ted Poston and John Strand, but this year we have no firm plans at this date. I will be asking for a volunteer to co-host a Rocky Ford trip with John Strand at the meeting next Tuesday. I hope you will consider working with John for this outing. It is a good time and I actually caught a fish last year. The Sportsman Show was a success. Several of us helped a steady stream of kids tie flies and the auction of the float tube and fly rod went well. The Fly Fishing Show in Lynnwood is February 16 and 17 and provides a great opportunity to get out of the Tri-Cities for a bit and immerse yourself in fly fishing. Although I don’t really need more gear, I usually go. If you are contemplating a new rod, it is a perfect opportunity to cast different models. I especially like to watch the fly tyers and the casting demonstrations. I hope to see some of you there. Also, fly tying classes start on February 13 and affords a free start for anyone interested in learning to tie flies.

Keep the faith and check your gear. Some fishing opens on March 1.

Annual Banquet March 9, 2019

The Columbia Basin Fly Casters Annual Banquet will be held on March 9, 2019 at the Meadow Springs Country Club. Dave Hughes will be our speaker, conducting a fly tying clinic at 1:00PM and speaking at the evening festivities to begin at 5:30PM. Dave is one of the most well-known writers on fly fishing techniques and tactics in the West. He has published more than 20 books including Essential Trout Flies, Handbook of Hatches, Pocket Guide to Western Hatches, Trout from Small Streams, and Reading Trout Water. With Rick Hafele he also authored Western Mayfly Hatches, a detailed hatch guide that is a practical entomological text for anglers, and with Rick and Skip Morris, Seasons for Trout. Dave is a Vietnam vet, founded Oregon Trout in 1983, is a life member of the Federation of Fly Fishers, and is a graduate of the University of Oregon. Dave was our Banquet speaker in 2009, and this year will be accompanied by his wife, Japanese fly fishing writer Masako Tani, who you will recognize if you have read Dave’s books as a devoted angler and photographer. Several of Hughes’ books will be for sale and signing at the event. Tickets will be on sale in our February meeting and are also available at Sportsman’s Warehouse at $45 apiece. The menu will be grilled chicken breast with tomato, spinach, artichoke wine sauce; bacon wrapped pork loin with maple mustard glaze; Caesar salad; roasted vegetable pasta salad with vegetable mix; roasted garlic herbed potato; and dinner rolls. Cake will be provided by the Casters. If you have special dietary needs, call Craig Anderson at 378-7849. As usual, there will be a fly raffle where more than 20 boxes of flies will be available, all tied by our members as well as a number of silent auction items, including

craft items made by our members. Keep in mind that the proceeds from the fly raffle and silent auction help fund the great speakers we have at our monthly meetings as well as the conservation and education programs sponsored by our club, so be generous with those bids!

Smashed Hackle Nominees Needed

Each year at our Annual Banquet, we present an award to a member who demonstrated questionable judgment, negligence, gross incompetence, or suffered just plain bad luck in fly fishing. Past winners have hooked their spouses in the ear, provided a friend with a leaking flotation device, broke a large bottle of wine in a gear bag, got lost or separated from a fellow fly fisher only yards away, etc. So, if you know of a member that suffered or was the recipient of such an embarrassment, please let Craig Anderson know (378-7849), and be prepared to provide a brief write-up on the situation. Craig Anderson, the last recipient of the award, is most anxious to pass the award on to someone else!

Sportsman Show by Jim Saunders

I would like to start off with my sincere thanks to each and every one who

volunteered to support our booths. Without you, the Sportsman Show would not give our club an opportunity to have the public experience the joy of fly fishing, tying flies and just talking about fishing in general. The kids’ fly tying tables were an outstanding success again this year. So many smiling and proud faces as they greeted their parents, showing everyone the bright colored flies.

Our raffle for the fly rod, reel and line, plus the float tube did very well. The winner of the rod and reel was John Burns, of Pasco, and the float tube winner was Mike Barnes from Kennewick. Our signup sheets for fly tying, rod building, and casting classes averaged about what we’ve had in previous years. My personal thanks to the following club members for their support:

Call to order was at 7:00 PM by President Loomis Board members present: Jim Loomis, Wanda Shearer, Ted Lewis, Dennis Collins, Reed Kaldor, Sheldon Coleman, Mike Wade, and Denny Kreid. Also in attendance were 2018 CBFC treasurer Jeff Drowley and Jim Saunders, who headed up CBFC participation at the 2019 Tri-city Sportsman Show. President Jim Loomis asked if there were any concerns on the part of the Board with regard to Conflict of Interest. With no issues raised, the meeting proceeded per the agenda provided. Secretary Report - Denny Kreid asked if there were any new comments on the December 2018 Board Meeting minutes. Being none the minutes were approved by the Board. Treasurer Report - Jeff Drowley distributed copies of the summarized CBFC Profit and Loss Statement for December 2018. Following discussion by the Board, the December 2018 financial statement was approved. Jeff also presented the Draft 2019 CBFC Budget. The Board discussed the Draft Budget and requested some changes in a couple of budget items. At the conclusion of the budget discussions, the amended CBFC Budget for 2019 was approved by the Board. The 2019 Treasurer Sheldon Coleman presented and discussed the January 2019 Profit and Loss report emphasizing and

explaining changes he has introduced to the financial reports. Following discussion, the January 2019 Profit and Loss summary was approved by the Board. VP Membership Report – In the absence of Rich Holten who was unable to attend, President Jim Loomis reported the CBFC membership remains at 106. Treasurer Sheldon Colman added that paid up 2019 memberships stand at 30 at this time. While discussing membership matters the Board revisited discussions from previous Board meetings concerning issues with the quality and quantity of food served at the meetings. Although the food service has improved, Jim Loomis agreed to talk to the management at the Country Gentleman to see what can be done to address remaining issues. The Board also discussed problems that continue to be experienced with inaccurate head counts for dinners at the monthly meetings. The inaccurate counts provide problems for the CG Public House and for the club. No actions were taken but it was agreed that further discussion of this issue should continue in future board meetings. Newsletter Editors Report –Mike wade discussed the status of the February 2019 newsletter indicating that input is needed by Feb 6 for the February report and by February 23 for the. March newsletter prior to the CBFC Annual Banquet on March 9. Old Business Sportsman Show – Jim Saunders expressed his satisfaction with the support he received from CBFC members in pulling off the CBFC’s participation in the Annual Sportsman Show held Jan 18- 20, 2019 at the TRAC. The experiences of members in the Kid Tying activity was especially rewarding. Raffle ticket sales went very well and we obtained excellent signups for the upcoming fly tying, rod building and casting classes. Jim indicating he is going to provide a summary report on CBFC participation to the board in the next week or two. The one problem area was the relatively poor audience turn out for the Fly Tying Theater. We will need to work with the Sportsman Show organizers to see if we can get a more audience friendly venue for the theatre in the future. Fly Tying and Rod Building Classes– The fly tying and rod building classes will again be held in the Richland Fire House training room. However, as noted in the past meeting minutes, this may be the last year in the Fire House. Craig is going to continue discussion with the Fire House management and will explore other options for further discussion by the Board. The class schedules are as follow; Fly tying – start Feb 13, 2019 for 5 weeks Rod Building – start Mar 20, 2019 for 6 weeks Annual Banquet - Arrangements for the Annual Banquet are pretty much done. The Country Club has agreed to keep the ticket price at $45 same as last year.

Reed Kaldor Described status of his efforts in the collection of raffle items for the banquet. The board continued discussion of various ways to improve the process for collecting donations for the raffle. Reed indicated he has prepared letters to venders to acquire items for the raffle. Reed also requested a note in the Newsletter asking members to contribute hand-made items for the banquet raffle. New Business Feedback from the January meeting: There was agreement that the meeting went well and the food service was improved. Although, the meal was better than our overall experience in 2018, there are still issues. Inaccurate head counts are resulting in too much or too little food being prepared by CG. We need to remind members of the importance of responding each month when called to ensure we receive and report accurate counts to CG before the meetings. Jim Loomis took an action to talk to Craig and CG to further discuss these issues with the restaurant management. Northwest Youth Conservation Fly Fishing Academy: President Loomis discussed an inquiry from the Northwest Youth Conservation Fly Fishing Academy concerning the possible CBFC interest in contributing to and participation in their program. Jim took an action to follow up with this organization to better identify what they do and whether CBFC should consider some type of response. Future Board Meetings – The February 2019 Board meeting will be on Feb 26 at the home of the CBFC President Jim Loomis.
