Welcome to February! We are continuing to work hard academically and socially to ensure that we all have an optimal learning environment. We hope that your children share our extensive efforts to highlight positive character and diversity here at LADSBS daily. Just prior to our Winter Recess, we all watched the movie “Big Foot” so that we could springboard into the themes of tolerance and acceptance of others, as well as think-ing for yourself and having your own personal perspective. We will continue to make ref-erences to the movie, and we would love for you to do the same at home! We also have a daily foreign language announcement where students learn how to say “please” and “thank you” in various languages. Every morning students are encouraged to do their best to “make someone smile” every day.

Mother Nature has provided an interesting roller coaster ride for us thus far this winter! Please be sure that your children are prepared for both indoor and outdoor recess. We will always try to get outside for recess on any day that reads above 32 degrees, with the wind chill factor, so plan your children’s wardrobes accordingly. We do try and get outside, even if we are limited to the black top area, as often as we can.

We recently enjoyed a wonderful evening event for our fourth grade families, and we are looking forward to our “Spring Into Reading” third grade event on April 4th. Our S.I.T. Committee continues to plan and improve these events annually so that our students, as well as a special adult, can join us for some academic fun. We hope that you also en-joyed our second building-wide S.T.E.A.M. night! We were very excited to offer this event to our school community again this year, and it was a fabulous evening! Speaking of fun, our morning clubs are off to a super start. Our system seems to be working very smoothly, and your continued cooperation ensures that everyone gets into the building safely. The stu-dents as well as the club supervisors are so excited, and what a wonderful way to start our day!

Please continue to communicate with us about what your child needs to be suc-cessful. The stronger our partnership, the more successful we can be in reaching our goals. In considering our Character Education goals and in thinking about honoring “Black His-tory Month”, I would like to share with you a compelling Maya Angelou quote that I came across:

Trustworthiness...

Fourth Grade Focus. . .

It is so hard to believe that half the school year is over as February marks our second trimester. Please check with your child regarding any changes in class requirements as well as the need to replenish any school supplies.

With our school Science Fair scheduled for March 22nd, classes should have already received information regarding requirements as well as ideas for possible experiments. Please discuss with your child possible projects that will fulfill the Brookhaven Laboratory requirements and also provide an opportunity to learn and to have fun. Your child’s Science Fair project will serve as his/her second trimester project.

As a grade level, we will be reading Kindness is Cooler Mrs. Ruler by Margery Cuyler. To promote kindness in the month of February, students will fill out a heart every time they witness an act of kindness or when an act of kindness is done for them. These hearts will be displayed in the fourth grade hallway.

In math, many of the classes are learning about fractions. Please help your child continue to practice their multiplication facts. Repetition of these facts will make fourth grade math concepts easier to grasp all year!

In social studies, most of our classes are learning about New York Native Americans. This month, each fourth grade class will be attending a full-day Native American workshop in the LADSBS Gym to go along with our curriculum. This exciting program brings a walk-through muse-um filled with Native American culture, artifacts, games, stories, crafts, music and dance!

We want to extend a special Thank You to all of our fourth grade students, families and teachers who joined us for Family Fun Night. It was a fun-filled evening of games, activities and most importantly, time spent together!

Community Corner . . .

The LADSBS Service Club is once again finding ways to give back and serve others! We are current-ly sponsoring a collection to help homeless children by donating gently used books as well as new first aid

supplies. Let’s spread the love of reading by providing books for underprivileged students and families in our community. Together, we can make a difference!

Please send collected items to Ms. McCann in Room 161 by February 15th.

Gently Used books (ages Pre-School through High School) Band-Aids in FUN designs (all sizes)

Antiseptic wipes for first aid kits Small bandages Q-tips

Disposable gloves/rubber gloves Small hand sanitizers Chap stick

Tweezers (sealed packages only)

That’s not all!

The members of the Service Club are also planning a “Give Back to the Com-munity Day” on Wednesday, March 13th to honor and thank special people in our community. The entire school will be making thank you letters and cards to those

who attend as well as deployed service men and women. If you have a family mem-ber that is a Veteran, Soldier, Police Officer, Emergency Responder or Fire Fighter that would like to visit our school to be honored on March 13th, you can register by

Responsibility...

Art-I-Facts. . . Congratulations to 5th graders Nicholas Galfano and Sofie Stavropoulos who were selected to have their art displayed at the NYSATA Legislative Student Art Exhibition in Albany. Additionally, 5th grader

Amelia Avalos will have work displayed at the Colors of Long Island Student Art Exhibition at the Long Island Museum! Their incredible art and hard work is something to be admired.

Third Grade Thoughts . . . Can you believe the students are approaching the 100th day of school soon? During the month of

February, the third grade students will continue to prepare for the NYS Math and English Language Arts tests by following the curriculum using Journeys and the NYS Engage Modules.

In Math, the students are continuing to strengthen their knowledge of multiplication and division as well as solving word problems. As they finish up multiplication and division, their next unit will be frac-tions!

In Social Studies, the students are learning about the government and different commu-nities around the United States and the world. This month, the students will also cele-brate President’s Day.

In Science, the students are learning about different types of fossils. As you know, each student in LADSBS participates in the Science Fair which will be held on Friday, March 22nd.

There are many exciting assemblies happening in February! The Long Island Railroad will be vis-iting our 3rd graders on February 13th, and all students are looking forward to a visit from Reggie Harris on February 26th and his lively performance of “I Have a Dream: How Martin Climbed the Mountain.”

Enjoy your winter break and remember to read!

Fifth Grade Flash . . . It’s hard to believe we are more than halfway through this school year! Our fifth graders have been ringing in the New Year with a lot of hard work and fun activities.

We are back in full swing in the fifth grade wing! Students were welcomed back with an assembly by Jared Campbell. He is an award winning singer and songwriter from upstate New York who travels the coun-try sharing his uplifting, positive thinking songs with students. The students really enjoy this annual assem-bly.

In the classroom this month, we are focusing on the Solar System in science and multiplying and dividing fractions in math. We will continue to explore the Western Hemisphere in social studies and our Journey’s Unit is a compilation of American Revolution read alouds. The students are really interested and engaged when learning about our history!

At last, we all had a wonderful time at our second annual STEAM night. The kids had such a great time experimenting and exploring on their own. It was a great night to spend with family and teachers.

Reading Rockets: Helping Children with Communication Disorders in Schools

What are signs that a communication disorder is affecting school performance?

Children with communication disorders frequently perform at a poor or insufficient academic level, struggle with reading, have difficulty understanding and expressing language, misunderstand social cues, avoid attending school, show poor judgement and have difficulty with tests.

Difficulty in learning to listen, speak, read or write can result from problems in language develop-ment. Problems can occur in the production, comprehension and awareness of language at the sound, sylla-ble, word, sentence and discourse levels. Individuals with reading and writing problems also may experience difficulties in using language strategically to communicate, think and learn.

Marvelous Math . . .

Our school has been entered into an Eastern Suffolk Sumdog Contest which runs from February 8th-14th. We will be competing against students from Cutchogue, Westhampton Beach and Hiawatha…just to name a few.

Here’s how the contest works:

To take part, students simply play Sumdog’s math games.

Scores are based on accuracy and questions tailored to each student’s level - so everyone has a fair chance.

Each contest runs from 8:00 a.m. local time Friday to 8:00 p.m. the following Thursday - but you can play at any time during this period.

LADSBS mathematicians…As a reward for taking part, each student who answers 100 questions will receive an item for their Sumdog House.

Make math count today and every day!

Band The 4th Grade Band members are thrilled to prepare for their Beginner’s Recital on April 10th. Please continue to encourage your child to practice their homework assignments each week. NYSSMA will be held in May this year in Miller Place! Congratulations to Ruth Lynch for being accepted into the SCMEA Band Festival! Keep handing in your practice minutes!

Chorus

Chorus members are enjoying learning their new concert music! We’ve begun work on developing singing in harmonies and independent melodic lines. We are extending our musical boundaries and learning songs in slower tempos, new rhythms and different dynamics to strengthen our blend and singing lyrically. Ms. Vitkun is so proud of their hard work and dedication. Their love of singing and music in general is in-spiring!

Orchestra

The Orchestra students have been working very hard this month! We’re learning to count new and more difficult rhythms, sight reading new music and experimenting with different ways to convey emotion through music. Congratulations to our orchestra members who were chosen for the Long Island String Festival! Their hard work and long hours of rehearsal were showcased in a final concert that they should be very proud of! Please contact Ms. Vitkun with any questions about the upcoming NYSSMA festival.

Nurse’s Note . .

Please note that it is cold and flu season. We are encouraging students to wash hands often and cough into their sleeves rather than their hands. Practicing and modeling these pre-ventative strategies at home and in the classroom will help. As you know, we always encour-age students to attend school, but if your child is sick, has wet coughing, fever, diarrhea or vomiting, please keep them home until they are symptom free for 24 hours without medica-tion. For more information please go to: Flu Info

Character Clips . . .

For the second year in a row, Mrs. Arancio and Mrs. Kohlmann participated in the LADSBS STEAM night by offering two workshops which taught students (and the adults who joined them) how to make a glitter/calming jar. However, before diving into the pro-ject, workshop participants learned a few fun facts about glitter including the fact that the two factories that make glitter in the United States are both located in New Jersey, one of which is a leader in inventing bio-degradable/eco-friendly glitter.

Also, in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, prior to the creation of the plastic glitter that is most com-monly found today, glitter was made from ground up glass that was glued on to fabric to create a sparkly ap-pearance. Finally, our students were instructed in how to use their glitter jar as a mindfulness tool, allowing them to take a “brain-break” when feeling stressed or upset by shaking it and taking deep calming breaths while they watch the glitter fall slowly and gently to the bottom of the bottle.
