The Special Garden Project is a way to offer 4-H
members the chance to grow unusual and fun projects
in their gardens. This year the Special Garden Project
is focused on the unique Carmine Splendor
Okra. Carmine Splendor Okra is as unique as it is
tasty. This plant is high yielding and produces
uniform, red pods. The stout 5-pointed pods are deep
red when small and at the best eating quality. The
tropical-looking, pinkish flowers are also edible and
have a sweet, mild flavor. The mature seed pods also
give a fun twist for winter interest in a container.
Youth should enroll for the Special Garden Project
through 4-H Online. Once enrolled through 4-H
Online, youth are then to call their local office to let
them know they enrolled for the project. By enrolling
through 4-H Online, youth will have access to the box
folder with the educational materials including the
growing newsletter and evaluation.
Level 2 Theme Print: Beautiful Nebraska
Nebraska's state song, Beautiful Nebraska, talks of
peaceful prairie land, rivers, hills of sand, dark green
valleys, and rainbows reaching to the ground.
However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and
everyone has their own idea of what makes Nebraska
great. Entries in the theme print class should capture
and share what the exhibitor find beautiful in or about
Nebraska.
Level 3 Theme Print: N150
February 15, 2019 marks 150 years since the day the
state of Nebraska chartered the University of
Nebraska. That's 150 years of history to appreciate,
impact to unpack, and stories to tell. Much has
happened since 1869, all for the purpose of changing
lives, advancing knowledge, and fulfilling dreams.
How has the University of Nebraska impacted you,
your family, or your community? How can you tell
this story through photography?
The annual 4-H Phone-A-Thon is one of our most
successful fundraisers each year. The Phone-a-thon
helps support 4-H College scholarships, camp
scholarships, and more.
On February 5 and 11, Junior Leaders will be calling
for your pledge to support the Seward County 4-H
program. All proceeds from the fundraiser directly
benefit Seward County 4-H members and volunteers.
Donations are tax deductible. If you would like to
make sure you are added on the calling list, or know
someone who would like to support 4-H, please email
[email protected] with your name, phone number
and mailing address.
We are taking a year off of 4-H Fun Day. Instead we
are asking 4-H clubs to volunteer to host one month
of the children’s lessons for the Seek & Discover 4-H
Club. Each month’s activities last one hour and are a
great opportunity for older members to build
leadership skills. It will also help us to connect new
families to 4-H clubs in the county. There are lessons
available for each session or your club can come up
with your own. While your club leads the youth
sessions, Extension staff will be helping parents learn
to basics to 4-H. See page 4 for more information.
Camp Scholarships are available through the Seward
County 4-H Council. The form is included in this
newsletter and is available online. March 15 is the
deadline for scholarship applications.
In a typical week’s time…
51 minutes spent outdoors by the average kid
623 Minutes at a computer by the average kid.
700+ Texts sent by 29% of teens.
833 Minutes played by the average youth video gamer.
2121 Minutes of TV watched by a middle–schooler.
Nebraska 4-H Camps is one camp program operating in
two beautiful locations offering youth the opportunity
to Discover, Learn and Grow.
Nebraska 4-H Camps are open to ALL youth. You do
not have to be a member of 4-H to participate. Whether
a first-time camper or an experienced adventurer,
outdoor enthusiast or creative artist, there is a 4-H
camp perfect for every camper.
For more information, check out 4h.unl.edu/camp.
Camp brochures are also available at our office.
Big Red Summer Academic Camps are residential,
career exploration camps held at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln. These camps are open to all youth
grades 10th-12th including recent high school
graduates.
During the week-long camps, participants will work with
UNL faculty to explore the topic of their particular camp,
like filmmaking or crop science. After spending several fun-
filled days on campus, participants' families are invited to
attend a special capstone event where youth showcase their
achievements.
Each camp offered has a specific number of openings,
please see Big Red Summer Academic Camp
Sessions for a list of camps offered this year,
descriptions, participant limits, costs, and scholarship
opportunities. Camps are hosted by Nebraska 4-H and
UNL faculty members in various academic areas across
campus.

The Seek & Discover 4-H club is a unique club designed as an introduction to 4-H for new 4-H members and
their parents. It meets one evening each month through July. Parents attend a one hour meeting each month to
learn about the basics of 4-H while youth take part in a hands-on educational activity.
We are in need volunteers to lead the youth portion of each meeting. Lessons plans are already designed. We
need at least one adult plus 3-6 additional teen/youth helpers for each meeting.
This would be a great service opportunity for your 4-H club. Sign up to lead one meeting. It’s also a good way
for 4-H’ers to build leadership skills.
