MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT T o all those considering coming to the summer meeting, I strongly encourage you to do so. The annual meeting is June 8th through the 12th in Naples, Florida, at the beautiful and recently refurbished Ritz-Carlton. An important change we have made in this year’s registration is a response to our annual surveys. Many of those who responded in the annual survey wish to have a more economic and comprehensive package to register their entire family. This year, the board has listened to your request and has put together a family registration package. It is worth your careful study in the registration materials as this could be a substantial cost savings. It is meant to include access for a member and their spouse for all social activities and their accompanying children under 21 for the theme dinner, the daily breakfasts, and the welcome reception. This allows a family to register all together and hopefully makes it easier. This is a direct response to requests from our membership. The theme dinner this year will surround the lovely pool at the Ritz-Carlton with weather permitting. It is a “Lilly Palooza” meaning pack your brightest pink and green and expect to have fun. As usual, this will be a dinner with live music and entertainment appropriate for the entire family. This should allow for easy packing as the only requirement is bright Lilly Pulitzer type colors. The Symposium’s social venue was highlighted by the Friday night dinner gala, which was a wine tasting paired with food, good company, and music. The Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons thanks program Chair Dr. Mark Codner and Co-chairs Drs. Jim Namnoum and Albert Losken. A special appreciation goes to our Founders Drs. Carl Hartrampf, Jr. and L. Franklyn Elliott for their continued support for over 30 years. This symposium would also not be possible without the dedication and hard work of Susan Russell and continued support of the SESPRS.

THE 2019 ATLANTA BREAST SURGERY SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS

The January Annual Atlanta Breast Surgery Symposium in Atlanta was held at The Intercontinental Hotel in Buckhead. The weather cooperated this year and the

meeting was a success. This was the 35th year, and the topics surrounding reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery (new, old and controversial) continue to educate and entertain the attendees. The focus was on how to achieve good results after common complications, and the meeting continues to grow. This year we had 302 attendees in Atlanta onsite with 13 countries represented, and 136 attendees online live streaming from 12 countries. The Live Breast Surgery was telecast at The Intercontinental and online with new High Definition technology. The picture quality was impressive, and the live surgeries included Dr. Mitch Brown

who performed a transgender breast augmentation, Dr. Brad Calobrace who performed a revisional mastopexy augmentation, and Dr. Albert Losken who performed a reconstruction technique after skin sparing mastectomy using the residual breast skin to reconstruct a smaller breast mound and a contralateral breast reduction. This year’s Honorary Hartrampf lecturer was Dr. Elizabeth Hall-Findlay from Canada who discussed “Reflections” and looked back on how her practice and career evolved over the years. The national and international faculty is always the heart and soul of this meeting and once again didn’t disappoint. Other topics discussed during the weekend included prepectoral breast reconstruction, new techniques in autologous reconstruction, the role of textured implants in the era of BIA-ALCL, transgender breast surgery, aesthetic breast shaping, oncoplastic surgery, and the management of difficult patients. The three international scholars funded by the SESPRS were from the Republic of Georgia, and the John Bostwick resident paper award was given to Dr. Ara Salibian from NYU who discussed Staged Breast Reduction prior to Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy.

FEBRUARY 2019 3

The SESPRS 62nd Annual Scientific Meeting will be held at The Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida from June 8-12, 2019. The newly renovated resort is beautiful,

and the meeting space is in close proximity. 7 on-site dining areas, The Grill, the outdoor Gumbo Limbo, Dusk (sushi), Terrazza (Italian), Poolside Café, Bites at the Lobby Lounge, and the Spa’s =H2O+, offer a broad range of options from casual to fine dining. A large family pool, adults-only relaxation pool, whirlpool, and interactive children’s splash pool are some of the outdoor amenities. Nature’s Wonders is a special children’s activity area with an educational, environmental theme. The luxurious spa and complimentary fitness center, which overlooks the pool deck, will not disappoint. Designed by Greg Norman, the Tiburón Golf Club offers a championship course in a lush, tropical setting. Although the course hosts an annual PGA and LPGA tournament each year, the club’s crowning event of 2019 will be the SESPRS Golf Tournament. The Peter Burwash International (PBI) Tennis Center will help organize our tennis tournament, which will be played on 4 Har-Tru classic green clay tennis courts.

A very short boardwalk through a natural preserve of mangroves and palms provides access to three miles of pristine beach and the Gulf of Mexico. Umbrellas and beach chairs are complimentary. A variety of water sports, backwater fishing tours, and offshore fishing charters are also available. The Sand Bar offers ocean view dining and fills their draft beers through the bottoms of the glasses. (You will have to see this for yourself).

VUE (Virtual User Experience) is an ultra-contemporary entertainment lounge, featuring several high definition LCD screens, Blu-ray players, and Bang and Olufsen sound systems. Staffed by experienced gamers, VUE offers an Alienware gaming station with the most popular virtual reality games for the ultimate social gaming experience. In case your children don’t get enough screen time at home, they can easily make up for it at VUE.

Program Chairman, Dr. David Drake, has organized a fantastic educational program, entitled The Prism of Possibilities in Plastic Surgery. As a last minute reminder, abstracts for Resident and Member papers are still being accepted. Please submit your abstracts before the deadline of March 15th for consideration as a podium presentation!

Sunday morning kicks off the prestigious Glancy Award Resident Paper Competition, with the first 6 of 12 abstracts accepted for presentation. Our Keynote Presentation will be given by award-

winning author and visionary in the field of behavioral science, Victor Strecher, PhD, MPH, and is entitled, “Life on Purpose: How Living for What Matters Most Changes Everything.” Resident Jeopardy Bowl, moderated by Dr. Kye Higdon and Dr. Bert Losken, will wrap up Sunday’s program. Our poolside theme dinner is a “Lilly Palooza,” where the attire will be inspired by fashion designer, Lilly Pulitzer. Please wear your brightest, most colorful, floral, beachy prints. If you’re not sure what to wear, please contact Dr. Bob Allen for sartorial assistance.

4 FEBRUARY 2019

This year’s Upchurch Lecture will be given by Robert J. Allen, MD, pioneer in microsurgery, innovator of the DIEP flap, and perennial director of the SESPRS Tennis Tournament. Dr. Allen’s children and grandchildren have grown up coming to SESPRS Annual Meetings, and he will share with us “A Theory of Everything” on Monday morning. Afterwards, Dr. Michael Harrington will provide interested plastic surgery residents with an invaluable lunchtime discussion on written and oral board preparation.

On Tuesday, Dr. Leonard Furlow, a lifelong Southeastern member whose contributions to craniofacial surgery need no introduction, will receive the Southeastern’s special achievement award. This year’s Jurkeiwicz Lecturer is plastic surgery icon, Dr. Phillip Gordon “P.G.” Arnold, who will be speaking about the Soldier Surgeon, based on his vast experience as a military plastic and reconstructive surgeon. The Black Tie reception, awards presentation, and dinner will be held on Tuesday evening in the elegant Ritz-Carlton Ballroom.

Our program will conclude on Wednesday morning with an update by ASPS president, Dr. Jeffrey Janis, followed by a safety panel, moderated by Dr. Thomas Zaydon. Of particular interest, Neal Reisman MD, JD, and Victor Strecher, PhD, MPH, will discuss “Physician Burnout and Wellness: Taking Care of Ourselves.” I can’t think of a better way to reduce burnout and promote personal wellness than by learning from and relaxing with your families and colleagues at the SESPRS 62nd Annual Meeting.

We hope to see you in Naples this June for a fun and educational meeting.

THE SESPRS 62ND ANNUALSCIENTIFIC MEETING (cont.)

Holly Wall, Lynn Damitz, and Carmen Kavali would like you to mark your calendar for the annual Toast to Trudie Luncheon for the women of the Southeastern - Sunday, June 9, 2019 at The Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida. For those of you who have not been, it is a time for women residents and plastic surgeons to get together, relax, and talk about training and practice. Trudie was one of the founders of the Southeastern Society and our inspiration for the event. We know you will take away pearls and new bonds with fellow women colleagues. Make sure you save the dates of June 8 - 12, 2019 for your favorite summer meeting.
