To celebrate the New Year father came into our class and cut our Annual Vasilo-pita. Although finding the coin is a spe-cial blessing father reminded everyone that it is important to be generous to the needy with our prayers and donations.

To celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord father Tilemahos performed a mock bap-tism with our class. The students named the baby Andoni.

Catechism 101 While we often hear the question ‘Have you been saved?’ have we ever

contemplated what it means to be saved? What do we mean when we

say that Christ came to save us? This is a question that was spurred on

by our Bible Study discussion group as we studied the 4th Chapter of

Acts. In this chapter, St. Peter was arrested and, in his defense, he ex-

plained to his fellow Jews that Jesus is God, our Savior, the cornerstone

of our salvation that the people rejected.

Literally, salvation means that our souls and bodies will be reconnected

at the resurrection of the dead, and that Jesus will lead those whom He

saves to the everlasting kingdom. However, Jesus is not our Savior just

for that deciding last moment of judgment. Jesus being our Savior goes

beyond that most significant event.

Jesus is our Savior in that He reveals to us the mystery of God as Trini-

ty. He tells us who and what we are. As the human race, we are not an

evolutionary alignment necessitated by statistical probability. We are

created by God in His image, with sacred origin and sacred purpose.

No other religion elevates mankind to a higher place than that which

Christ reveals to us.

Having fallen from this sacred purpose by the misuse of our God-given

freedom, Jesus is our Savior because He recovers that purpose on behalf

of mankind with humility, obedience and His own life. He comes as a

meek and humble Savior to cleanse us of our selfishness and to open

our eyes to the virtue of a clean heart by which we should once again

see God.

Ever since the beginning of time, man-made religions have developed

different methods and rituals to deal with the inexplicable existence of

our conscience and guilt. All religions offered guilt offerings as sacrific-

es, yet they could never be certain of divine forgiveness, neither did

they lead people to forgive one another unconditionally. Jesus saves us

in that he teaches us to forgive and ask forgiveness. He relieves us of

this guilt by calling us to live in the realm of mutual forgiveness, initiat-

ing the process from the Cross itself where, as the perfect and only inno-

cent man, He said: “Forgive them Father for they know not what they

do”. Once the relationship of guilt between man and God has been

eliminated, Christ enables us to extend this divine forgiveness to one

another: “Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass

against us”.

As God Incarnate, He reveals to us the existence of the afterlife and that

He is the door to that life. He is the only One Who can declare to the

dying thief on the cross: “Today You will be with me in Paradise”. He

gives us the resurrection by resurrecting himself and us. He gave us

His body so that by becoming one with Him, we can die with Him and

resurrect with Him. Who else can tell us that there is eternal life? Only

He who is from the Father, the only one who descended into Hades and

ascended into the Heavens.

Jesus is our Savior because He gives us joy. In this fallen state of our life, there is an immense amount of tragedy

and despair, all of it brought on by our own choices. Even when nature lashes out in natural disasters, it is so

only because nature rebels against us just as we rebel against God. Yet, in all this tragedy, we are filled with

peaceful joy, because, while we do not seek pain, we understand it when it comes, we understand its purpose,

we identify it as followers of Jesus Christ, and we carry our cross with purpose. In that sense, pain and suffering

are sanctified. The tragic events in history are seen in a different light. Jesus provides the model by which we can

place suffering in its proper salvific context.

Jesus saves us by sanctifying all creation, all civilization, and all of the material world. He does not teach us to

reject the world but to develop a correct relationship to it. Pagan religions deified creation. Modern culture has

taught us to be enslaved to it by making us the most efficient and insatiable consumers in human history. Jesus

saves us by teaching us how to use the material world, to be masters of our environment, to truly live in a sacred

relationship to the material world which we recognize as a gift from God by offering it back to God.

Jesus gives us the ability and the knowledge to stand as brothers to one another. He teaches to seek the gift of

the Holy Spirit through believing in Him. By the presence of the Holy Spirit He transforms our biological life to

a spiritual life; to an eternal life. All these are the elements of salvation which are available to those who will ac-

cept Jesus as their Savior.

There is no other name under heaven that can give us these things. He has absolute power. The Christ is the on-

tological savior, it is Who He is. It is not some special hidden knowledge or secret that He gives us. He took on

human nature and restored its ability to receive the Holy Spirit; to receive life in abundance. He is the corner-

stone of our salvation, because, just as a cornerstone unites two walls, Jesus unites human nature with the divine.

There is no other cornerstone, no one who can unite the two natures. He saved us by Who He is. This is his eter-

nal will for all humanity. He walked among us, He went to Hades, He has ascended into the heavens, He is the

Savior for all humanity and all creation. Jesus is our Savior, and nothing can keep us away from understanding

and accepting Him as our personal Savior in this life and the next. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP 2019 The Stewardship Committee thanks our 373 Stewards who have fulfilled their pledge for the 2018 year. We wish

to express our gratitude for your commitment to the Lord’s work through our Church of Saint Spyridon and we

encourage everyone to offer their stewardship for the good of the Church. The 2019 stewardship packets have been mailed to your homes and we hope that you can make your pledge for the new year as soon as possible. Let us work together to make 2019, an exemplary year of growth and renewed blessings for our beloved parish of Saint Spyridon.

STEWARDS 2018-JANUARY 1ST-JANUARY 25TH

Food for Thought A healthy parish should be sustained by the stewardship of the faithful. However, our parish family still relies on fund raisers and on the support of the local community to meet our obligations. We could eliminate our reli-ance on our fundraisers by raising our stewardship by $14/month. In other words, if we raised our average stewardship from $36/month (our 2018 average), to $50/month, we could give our give our aging cooks and vol-unteers the rest and respect that they deserve. They have given us a beautiful church without any debt. We must meet our responsibilities and not rely on their continued labor in our kitchen to pay our obligations. What is $50/month compared to our average spending? The average American household spends ……$200/month on cell phone service ……$241/month on TV & 4 hours/day ……$47/month on alcohol ……$92/month on coffee Let us consider that we raise our stewardship commitment so that we may eventually wean ourselves off our reliance to fundraisers. It is definitely an achievable goal if we all strive to meet our responsibility together.

CHERUBS

Our cherubs family would like to wish everyone

a happy new year! We started our year with the

cutting of the vasilopita. The kids also celebrated

the new year with a count down and then pop-

ping of confetti. We then crafted our own noise-

makers to complete our celebration! We wish

everyone a healthy and blessed new year!

GOYA NEWS

GOYANs celebrated the New Year with the cutting of the va-

silopita. Our very own, Christos Retsinas was the lucky winner.

On January 23rd, we

had a lot of fun in the

kitchen making cakes

for the Sunday coffee

social hour.

Our fellow GOYANs

are hosting a dance, so

please come join us!!!

The Handmaidens youth group has been able to help many non-profit community agencies this year and last year. While most of the projects focus on ways to support those that have fallen ill, some of the projects have also been to help support relief efforts for emergency needs. Of course, we could not do such good works without the help of the parishioners of our church community. A big thank you to all of you who have supported our fund-raising efforts so we can make blankets for the newborns of St. Spyridon, blankets for sick children in hospitals (Project Linus), Hygiene Kits (for the IOCC), cards for parishioners who are ill, and for hospitalized kids at La Rabida and other hospitals in the Chicagoland area. It is never too late to join. Simply let the church office know of your daughter’s interest. Our next meeting is on Feb. 15th at 6 p.m.

HANDMAIDENS

were featured in the Palos Patch as well as the Region-

Metropolis of Chicago to Relocate

Main Offices To Temporary Location. The lack of adequate work areas and offices, the general

lack of accessibility (for persons with disabilities, limited

parking, etc.), and ongoing maintenance demands make

Burton Place suited for the Metropolis’ long-term vision to

support and serve its parishes, ministries and faithful. As of

Monday, January 28, the physical address of the Metropolis

of Chicago will be 1301 Estes Avenue in Elk Grove Village,

Illinois. The Metroolis can be reached through its new

phone and fax numbers: 847-264-8360 (phone) and 847-264-

8369 (fax). The Metropolis general email address remains

the same: [email protected]. The Metropolis

office hours will remain the same: 9:00am to 5:00pm, Mon-

day – Friday. The donation of the rent-free space created an

opportunity for the Metropolis to have more desirable

amenities, location, office space, parking and meeting space

that will better serve the faithful and the parishes of the

Metropolis.

Philoptochos News

14 St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Philoptochos, Greetings!

Although the weather was cold, our Philoptochos women started the New Year with warm hearts. We continued our mis-

sion of giving, praying and offering our healing thoughts to those who experience challenges with loved ones.

In January, we attended the special event for our beloved Rene and the Kontaris family. It was a very successful fundraising

event, attended by Fr. Tilemahos, Presbytera Georgia, our Philoptochos members, many parishioners from our Church and

supporters from our neighboring communities.

It is support such as this that keeps our hearts and spirits warm, during the frigid winter months.

Our prayers will continue for Rene, Spero and their lovely children; we want them to know that they are loved… love will

sustain them and prayer will get them through anything! WISHING RENE A SPEEDY AND COMPLETE RECOVERY!

Another beautiful celebration that our Philoptochos ladies took part in was at the Kefi Restaurant, where we celebrated Pat

Katsenis’ Retirement Party. We had a wonderful time, with lots of fun and laughter. We wished our dear sister Pat, noth-

ing but magnificent things to come in her life! May she always rise each day with Sunlight in her heart, Success in her path

and Answers to her Prayers!

GIFT OF LOVE TO OUR CHURCH:

It is customary, at the beginning of the New Year that the Philoptochos Sister-

hood presents our gift of love to our beloved St. Spyridon Church. This year

again, we presented $5,000 dollars to the Parish Council. It is a symbol of our

love and dedication to our Church.

IT IS WITH DEEP APPRECIATION AND HEARTFELT GRATITUDE that

we express to the Vardalos family, for their generous donation to the St. Spyridon

Philoptochos Society in memory of Mr. George Vardalos.

MAY HIS MEMORY BE ETERNAL!

On Sunday, January 20th, the church was filled with Godparents and their Godchildren. Our Carnival theme had everyone stepping right up and enjoying a delicious brunch together. The PTA would like to thank the Vardalos family for donating the food to honor the memory of Mr. Nick Vardalos. May his memory be eternal. We would also like to thank all the donors and volunteers who made Godparents brunch possible. The children enjoyed Frank the magician to close out the day. On January 27th, we held our Annual Artoclasia in honor of the feast of the Three Hierarchs, the patron saints of Greek Religious Education. Thank you to Maria Spiros for making the Arto for us. The PTA and its members gathered in the front pews and worshiped together. Sunday school snacks will be set up on a designated table during the fel-lowship hour. The children can help themselves to a snack. Please arrive at church at 9:30 and assist with getting the community room ready. We will head into church and come back after communion to finish set up. Help is needed pouring coffee, pouring water, clearing empty trays, washing and drying and folding the table cloths at the end. We thank you for helping with the fellowship hour.
