But it's also time for looking ahead and at 5.00 pm on Sunday February 23 the Gidgegannup Agricultural Society will hold its AGM in the Showground Hall and start seriously looking towards organising the 74th Gidge Show on Saturday October 31. Several longstanding Committee Members have retired and all positions on the Committee will be declared vacant at the meeting. Any financial member of GAS is entitled to nominate for election and you are all encouraged to consider becoming involved. To make duties less arduous, some responsibilities have been split and job sharing will be encouraged. Contact a current Committee Member for further information.

It's the beginning of February and everything should be settling down by now – holidays are over and children are back to school; a small sigh of relief all round perhaps …

$20 Million Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants Program

You may recall that the June 2019 Gidgegram reported that the Morrison Government had announced “a $20 million package to strengthen rural Australia with initiatives to ensure agricultural shows remain a centrepiece of regional communities, help educate children about agriculture and food production and encourage more people into agricultural careers”, a move which was welcomed by Agricultural Societies across the country.

In close co-operation with Sally Block, Experience Gidgegannup, and with invaluable assistance from Julie-Anne Pettit, Facilities Planner with the City of Swan, GAS submitted applications for two Grants: a Small Grant to cover upgrading of power on the Showgrounds and a Large Grant to cover infrastructure upgrades to be accomplished by June 2021. Grateful GAS thanks have been expressed to these two ladies.

It has been reported that the Perth Royal Agricultural Society was pleased to note that both the Gidge Agricultural Show and the Small Farm Field Day were cited in the Applications along with a number of other community groups. The outcome of this Grants Program will likely be known in April.

Gidgegannup Agricultural Society (Inc) AGM

Grant Applications received totalled in the order of $68 million but in light of the drought coupled with the catastrophic bushfire situation in the Eastern States it is inevitable that some showgrounds will be unable to function at least in 2020 and ongoing reports are being received of Shows being cancelled. It is not known what effect these disastrous events will have on how individual Grant Applications are viewed. Our best wishes and hopes for successful recovery go to the devastated communities in the Eastern States.

Congratulations 50th Anniversary

Agricultural Society President Gordon Caine and wife Esme, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in January. The couple have been long standing active members of the Gidgegannup Agricultural Society and the Gidgegannup Square Dance Club, and together are stalwarts of the Gidge community, dedicating many years of volunteer work. Thanks you Esme and Gordon, I think a piece or two of that beautiful cake pictured below is well deserved.

What a long time it seems since the last Gidgegram and Gidge seemed to close down during January but now with Australia Day behind us, time to get on with 2020.

Lillie Road is now open and provides a much needed second exit from Tilden Park in the event of an emergency. Also we will be gradually welcoming new residents to Gidge. Reserve and Reen Roads have seen quite a lot of development in the last few years with 20ha blocks appearing and new houses being built. A great way for Gidgegannup to develop.

Now some of the livestock we could give a miss to are rats and snakes. We have had an inundation of rats this year, maybe with the demolition of an old house next door. Anyway they decamped into our hay shed so we have had to carry out a policy of mass murder. Still a few about but definitely better. Snakes!!! I have seen three on the place this year, two pythons and a dugite. Don't mind the pythons. One was sunbaking early one morning outside the old house (think it lives in there). I was made aware of this by the better half, who I had dropped off to feed the chooks and driven off in the rtv to the feed shed to collect the horses' breakfasts. Suddenly as I drove along, I became aware of this figure running past me yelling 'snake'. He can now tell a python from something nastier. Just as well because another one popped up at our house on the chair beside

A few thefts and trespassing around Gidge, so be sure to lock up your gates and your property to escape attention from these opportunists. Also report any suspicious vehicles or people acting suspiciously to the police on 13 14 44 – and, if possible and safely, take a photo and send in with time and place to the police. Every piece of information helps to possibly establish a pattern.

Talking of 2020 – back in 2000 with the dawn of a new century, a message was painted on Reserve Road just to the north of the Wooroloo bridge “Happy New Year 2000” a welcome to the unknown 2000s. Mysteriously on1st January 2020, those driving on Reserve Road may have noticed that this message has been renewed to read “Happy New Year 2020”. It would be nice to think that the message will be there in 2040 and someone will renew that message again. Impossible to imagine Gidge in 2040 but then we probably didn't envisage the changes that the years up to 2020 would bring.

We don't have a lot of pasture left with Kasanova and his herd. At least no fire risk. He rules over them paternally. Quite pleasant living with the livestock on this place, even the better half quite likes the horses now.

So far Gidge has been fortunate with fire alerts. There have been some, but our brigades have got on to them so fast little harm has been caused. Let's keep it that way for the rest of this summer and many more. The community is working hard to secure improvements to our telecommunications, which can only help our safety and security for us and visitors to the area.

It was pretty hot up to Christmas, with very little rain but we have had summers far hotter with the temperatures in the mid 40s so nothing unusual, and although rain would be nice for gardens, it is not going to do a lot for those who have pasture left.

St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slammed his clipboard onto the ground. "What's wrong?" asked the frightened couple. "OH, COME ON!," St. Peter shouted, "It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it'll take me to find a lawyer?"

Ken Wyatt is in talks with Telstra and NBN and they are

working to investigate potential improvements or solutions

to the issues we are facing in Gidgegannup. Further to this,

Ken wrote to the Communications Minister, highlighting his

concerns for our safety, and the potential for federal funding

of the backup generators for Mobile Tower base stations.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS:

LOCAL PLANNING SCHEME NO. 4 STRUCTURE

PLAN NO. 34 (NORTH STONEVILLE TOWNSITE):

Telstra is working to identify the two highest priority base

stations for these generators, if the funding is secured.

Falls Heights Tower is now scheduled to be in service June

2020. It appears that activation of this tower is dependent on

proposed tower in Bunning Road near Trimble Road. This is

within the Shire of Mundaring. This tower and the Falls

Heights tower will service a large part of Gidgegannup that

does not have mobile coverage. The Development

Application will be lodged shortly and let's hope it progresses

smoothly. This will also take some of the pressure off the

townsite tower.

Further Ken has asked them to provide an overview on the

measures undertaken for Fire Mitigation.

A decision on this has been deferred until April. The

guidelines on building within 100 metres from bushland have

changed. The area of bushland has been reduced. What is

clear is that the Perth Adelaide National Highway will need to

be in place before this development can go ahead as Main

Roads have stated that the Great Eastern Highway is

There is a steering committee of four people wanting to form a

Gidgegannup Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It was

encouraging to see the number of local businesses that are

interested in being part of a Gidgegannup Chamber of

Commerce (some 14).

A submission has been sent to the City objecting to this

proposed Scheme Amendment.

2. Residents are concerned that horses being ridden nearby

could be spooked due to the noise with potential tragic

consequences.

MOTION that the Council resolve to:1) Refuse to grant approval for the proposed development

associated with the Filling of Land for the Constructed

Runway at Lot 121 (No.2927) and Lot 249 (No.2775)

Toodyay Road, Gidgegannup for the following reasons:

1. Residents have expressed concern over the potential for

airborne asbestos as the asbestos cover will not be sealed.

3. The rural amenity will be impacted by flyovers and the

noise generated by the airplane.

The proponent has the right of appeal to the State

Administrative Tribunal and we believe has already done

so. The GPA is concerned that this application could be

approved without the conditions proposed by the City. It

was pointed out that there is a mediation process prior to

any decision at SAT.

ST JOHN FIRST RESPONDER;

GPA attended a meeting with St John's Ambulance, to

discuss whether it was feasible to consider whether an

ambulance could be stationed in Gidge as a first responder

to incidents. Morangup and Wundowie have this as do

several regional centres.

After discussion it was felt that we would be better served by

getting a first responder programme up and running.

There is a free App. Available at the App Store or Google

Play Also we would need to facilitate first aid training

courses. Thought is that we should try and get as many

people possible to have some form of first aid training.

There is a lot of info of which the community is not aware.

We have five defibrillators in Gidge, most of them locked

up. These could be registered on the app and still be locked

up but a photo of the id number sent to 000 would get them

unlocked. Then we would need the person who was

trained to use them, not always easy.

It was decided that we would hold a public meeting in

February with information beforehand to gauge level of

interest for these First Responder courses. It was felt that

the GPA should support this initiative.

GIDGEGANNUP WILDFLOWER SIGNAGE;

Gidgegannup Wildflower Signage has been installed on

roads in Gidgegannup. City staff worked with the

Gidgegannup Progress Association to help make this

possible.

Gidgegannup has an amazing facility in our Showgrounds

and the Agricultural Society have done a great job to maintain

and improve the grounds over many years. This year

Experience Gidge has been working with them towards

securing funding for improvements and upgrades to the

grounds. We have also requested the City to put funding in

their budget to provide banners in the townsite for both the

Show and the Field Day in the lead up to their events. These

two events are run entirely by the community and funded by

them as well and are certainly the largest independent events

in the Swan Valley/Gidgegannup ward, if not the City of

Swan.

Red Hill was named after the distinct red colour of the earth in

the area. Toodyay Road passes through Red Hill on the way up to

the Darling Scarp. The most notable feature of Red Hill is Red

Hill Waste Management Facility, a regional landfill facility,

managed by the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.

An Environmental Education Centre is located at the Red Hill

Waste Management Facility and school and community tours are

conducted regularly.

The Friends of Susannah Brook Reserve recently hosted two

weeding mornings at their wildlife corridor restoration site in

Susannah Brook Reserve, Gidgegannup. This on-ground

work is part of a three year restoration project being

undertaken in the reserve, funded by the Western Australian

Government's State Natural Resource Management Program.

Supported by the Susannah Brook Catchment Group and a

number of local community volunteers who came along to

each event to lend a hand, the Friends Group coordinated the

removal of Wild Radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) invading

their community revegetation site which was planted in June

this year.

Having a team of volunteers working together for an hour or

two, tackling the challenge of weed removal inside tree guards

and around sedge tubestock along the creek line, was only

made easier with some easy-going conversations, good-

natured banter and, of course, a home-cooked morning tea!

From babies to retirees, up to 16 volunteers put in an

outstanding effort across the two mornings, determined to

complete the weeding task before stopping for a cuppa and

catch-up.

Who would have thought that pulling weeds could be so

enjoyable?

When AHMAG formed in 2014, the principal aim was to stop a Chinese-Australian joint venture mining local bauxite. Since then, deposits of lithium, vanadium and iron ore have been pegged in the Avon Valley so we now face the threat of even more open-cut mining in the district.

Maintaining the campaign's momentum when most residents believe the threat of mining has disappeared is a difficult phase but we remain committed to monitoring the mining proponents' 'live' tenements in our local area.

In April this year, AHMAG enters its sixth year of campaigning to stop all open-cut mining within a 100km radius of Perth.

Campaigns to save our environment are not sprints – they are marathons. Mining proponents such as Yankuang Buaxite Resources Ltd hope AHMAG will fold but we remain fully incorporated and action ready for when they return to full activity.

We are also keeping an eye on a huge gravel pit proposed Lot 3560 Toodyay Road Bailup which could possibly turn into a bauxite mine.

Geoff Appleby kindly offered to chair last year's AGM in August and has also rewritten parts of our constitution which allow more flexibility for committee members. The proposed constitution will be circulated to members prior to the August 2020 AGM at which any changes will be voted on. A reminder: To vote at the AGM, you must be a financial member.In the past six months we have outlaid approximately $1500 on new promotional merchandise (calico bags, stubby holders and keep cups) which have been rebadged with the updated message of stopping all open-cut mining in our area.

Our core group continues to spread the message about protecting our fragile environment at local agricultural shows and community events such as swap meets and farmers markets.

AHMAG enters the new year in a healthy financial position and in February we can pay a full-year's public liability insurance ($1,650) in a single payment, saving $150.October was our busiest fundraising month with three local shows and a car boot sale which put the events team through its paces.In a month we managed to recoup $1200 of the $1500 we spent on restocking our merchandise. A solid effort by all.

Hope and David Jones are continuing with their fortnightly stall at Midland Farmers Market where they sell plants and collect signatures for our parliamentary petitions which have now been signed by 4,688 people.We welcome our new members and thank all current members and supporters for their on-going commitment: Jo and Phil Hart for maintaining the website and Facebook page which has a steady following and, Sandra Harms, Shan Diver and family, Rosemary and Miska Madacsi, Heather and Geoff Appleby, Ieva Tomsons and Leonie Woods for stepping in when we needed their support in vital roles.

Once again Sandra Harms produced a stunning design of a local banksia species for the new shopping bags.

In a public notice, Water Corporation WA has proposed removing the original above-ground parts and installing new pipes below ground over the next 50 years.

While some sections of the Perth-to-Kalgoorlie scheme have already been upgraded, more than 300 kilometres of the original pipeline is still in service today.

Legendary engineer Charles Yelverton 'CY' O'Connor once dreamed of a scheme to supply fresh water from Western Australia's coast to the dry interior.

The Water Corporation WA document said the surviving pipeline was "not fit for purpose" and experienced "a number of leaks and bursts".
