Like Garten’s Music, Fred and Judy Cook celebrated their 50th anniversary last year. The Mulvane residents both retired in 2004. They have two children and four grandchildren.
“We hardly do anything with-out the other one,” Judy said.
“We still walk hand in hand,” Fred added.
So when they decided to join the Goofin’ Around Keyboard Class in August 2009, it made sense that they enrolled to-gether. Judy played piano when she was younger, and she wanted to try the class after hearing from Goofin’ Around student Joyce O’Dell, who also lives in Mulvane.
“I’m happy I’m playing the organ,” Judy said. “It gives you a calming effect.”
The couple purchased a Low-rey Conductor but later took a break from classes. During

that break, the Cooks admit-ted, they didn’t play as much and lost ground. When they saw the Goofin’ Around Keyboard Class booth a few years ago at Senior Expo, they decided to resume class-es. They now own a Lowrey EZ10.
“Of course, I’m not as good as the better half here,” Fred said.
“Well, I play more than you do,” Judy replied.
“And we both do enjoy it – a lot,” Fred added.
Fred likes country and some gospel music. Judy also likes gospel, but she appreciates the variety of music that stu-dents are exposed to in class. “And you’re learning all the time, so that’s good,” she said.
Some of Fred’s favorite songs he has learned in classes are “When the Saints Go March-ing In” and “I Walk the Line.”
He played cornet in school and then won a guitar in a card game during his stint in

the Navy. He occasionally sits in with his church music team as a guitarist, and he sings in the church choir.
Fred and Judy said they enjoy associating with the teachers and their fellow stu-dents in class.
“Everybody’s so friendly,” Fred said, “and you do meet new people and make friends with everybody in the class-es.”
They were quick to think of advice they would offer someone interested in joining the class but feeling hesitant.
“By all means, do it!” Fred said. “There’s nothing to be nervous about. It’s very easy to learn. I think anybody could learn these instruments you have here.”
“Learn as you go,” Judy advised. “Don’t wish it – just do it!”
