Pastor Bill’s PagePastor Bill’s Page Cathie has a problem. I know I should not “out” her publicly like this, but it has really gotten out of control. It is worse around the holidays. I’ll come home in the evenings and find her nestled in her chair—it’s as if she hasn’t moved in hours. She’ll just be sitting there, indulging her desire, staring emptily at the wall above the fireplace. She is held tight in the grips of the Hallmark Movie Channel. No one can escape. I’ll sit down too, and quickly I’ll be entranced by the wily characters as they muddle through their relationships. These movies all follow the same ancient formula. Two strangers meet who don’t get along very well. They usually have bad relationships already in their lives. But as they work, play or compete with one another, they begin to be attracted to each other. Inevitably one or another will stumble and all of their relationships will become a hot mess. Then someone steps in and rights all the perceived wrongs and we have a reconciliation and a “happy ending!” It’s going to get worse in February. I have already looked and HMC is gearing up for Valentine’s Day. There will be three “premieres:” The Story of Us; Valentine in the Vineyard; and Love, Romance and Chocolate. It’s going to be a long, lonely February, indeed. But then, who doesn’t like a good love story? That is, after all, why we gather each Sunday morning, isn’t it? To listen to an ancient, yet ongoing love story. It’s a story about an ancient people who are in relationships that aren’t particularly healthy. They may be abusing power, following false idols, cheating on one another or being oppressed by outsiders. They are often found to be fighting with one another or their neighbors. But God keeps courting them. Over and over again, God comes to their rescue. First at the gates of Eden when he provides them with food and clothing, even after they disobeyed him. He continues to walk with them through the centuries, calling them back from the poor decisions they had made. He uses the voices of prophets, judges and kings. He even used foreign leaders like Cyrus to bring his people a message of grace. The people would come back to God again and again, but every time they would drift away. Finally, God himself came down in the person of Jesus – that someone special that steps in to right all the wrongs so that God and his people might experience reconciliation. In February, during the season of Epiphany, we will again be introduced to this Jesus and the message he brings to all people, even you and me. At the end of the month we’ll begin to hear the story of that final reconciliation when we are asked to recognize our brokenness on Ash Wednesday and to walk with Christ to Jerusalem and the cross. Of course, like any good love story there is a happy ending. The cross may be the denouement of the story, but the real climax is when Christ rises victorious from the grave and all people are reconciled to him. Love triumphs in the end and victory is won over sin, separation and even death itself. Now that’s a love story I could watch over and over again! The Good News is that it is showing each week at a church near you. As Jesus says, “Come and see!”

God is with us—Emmanuel. It seems so long ago that we watched and waited through Advent,

knowing God is up to something. At midnight, the heavens came alive with the glory of God as the

angels sang of Jesus’ birth, the son of God incarnate. Our longing for peace, for justice, for

reconciliation, and for God’s obvious presence has been met and we are released from our fears and

sins and find rest.

Now we are in the Time after Epiphany, when Jesus is revealed as the light of the world. Isaiah

reports that “the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” God’s people are to be

the light of the world now, always loving, gracious, peaceful, seeking justice, and reconciling one

to another through forgiveness. We are the people of the continuing story. We now bear the light

of Christ in the world. Let our lights shine!

February 2nd we will celebrate Presentation of Our Lord, when Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to

the temple to present him to the Lord and we hear Simeon proclaim that he has seen God’s

salvation, that Jesus is a light for revelation to the Gentiles, as well as Israel. And Anna the prophet

recognizes Jesus as redeemer. This is also Scout Sunday and we recognize all Scouts at 8:30am

worship. Scouts will usher and proclaim God’s word for us. Welcome them!

February 23rd we celebrate The Transfiguration of Our Lord, a bridge between the Advent-

Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter cycles. Jesus is revealed in his glory to Peter, James, and

John. He asks them not to share what they witnessed until after the resurrection. They wait, but

they DO share later so that we know about this event in our story. Sometimes we, too, wait to share

our experiences of glory and presence. But it is important that we DO share them, so others are

enabled to notice God’s everyday acts among us.

February 23rd is also Bold Women Sunday, when we return our Katie’s Fund boxes to support

God’s work in this community. We welcome Kris Totzke, Assistant to the Bishop, as our guest

preacher. Kris will also speak to us between worship times, reminding us that we are more than a

single congregation—we are church together in the synod, the ELCA and the world.

Wednesday, February 26th is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent. We receive the ashes on our foreheads as reminder that God created us from dust and we will return to God’s dust.

Worship Services are:

12:00 Noon in the Chapel with imposition of ashes and Holy Communion

7:00 pm in the Sanctuary with imposition of ashes and Holy Communion

Though this may seem obvious, it underscores whose I am, whose you are, whose we the church are. We are in God and remain baptized into God in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. We are already home. We will begin Wednesday evening Lenten worship on March 4th at 7:00 pm in the Chapel. This is a special time of singing the lovely Holden Evening Prayer, and building relationships with

both God and each other as we Dwell in the Word. We hear a Bible passage, reflect upon it, discuss it in small groups, and with the whole gathered community, then finish with the quiet Evening

Prayer. Try it. It is a centering time.

Vision for 2020

Well, it’s 2020! When we hear 2020 we often think of 20/20 vision and think that that means

“perfect” vision. In actuality, 20/20 vision means that you can see objects 20 feet away with

clarity. That’s great if we’re driving, etc., but is 20/20 vision good enough for our vision of where

we want our church to go? Do we only want to look 20 feet away?

We are a wonderful congregation with many wonderful ministries, volunteers, programs, etc.

There is no where else that I would rather worship! But as I consider 2020 and relate that to vision,

I think about peripheral vision – what’s on the periphery, the edges, that we may be missing. What

about depth perception? Are we skimming the surface or can we go deeper?

I admit that I do not have perfect vision! So, as I take the reins as Council President, I will be

asking for lots of help and support. I envision that that can take place in the form of dialogue. The

back and forth conversational work of listening and question asking, reflection and clarification is

vital to my growth and to the growth of our congregation. I will be asking for your visions of

where we want to focus our efforts, how do we see our church progressing and growing?

You have entrusted the church council . . .

Lila by Marilynne Robinson Marilynne Robinson, one of the greatest novelists of our time, returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe, and wonder. Lila, homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, steps inside a small-town Iowa church - the only available shelter from the rain - and ignites a romance and a debate that will reshape her life. She becomes the wife of a minister, John Ames, and begins a new existence while trying to make sense of the life that preceded her new found security. Neglected as a toddler, Lila was rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter, and brought up by her in a hardscrabble childhood. Together they crafted a life on the run, living hand to mouth with nothing but their sisterly bond and a ragged blade to protect them. Despite bouts of petty violence and moments of desperation, their shared life was laced with moments of joy and love. When Lila arrives in Gilead, she struggles to reconcile the life of her makeshift family and their days of hardship with the gentle Christian worldview of her husband which paradoxically judges those she loves. Lila is a moving expression of the mysteries of existence. All women are welcome! Coffee and treats at 9:00 am. Discussion at 9:30 am

Christian Education & Children’s MinistriesChristian Education & Children’s Ministries

As we grow in our relationship to Jesus we open our hearts for new experiences. As we grow in numbers

we also may find ourselves having to choose between offerings. All our educational opportunities are open

to everyone regardless if they are directed towards parents, new Christians, or a Christian seeking a deeper

relationship with God. In February we have multiple opportunities to meet new people, make new friends,

and deepen our Spiritual lives.

My Bad, “Taking Responsibility.”

The Parent Forum is a discussion group for parents, grandparents, mentors and step parents. Sunday, February 2nd—Room 9 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Arguing with kids often seems like a losing battle—and it is. No matter what you say, your child has a smart comeback that pushes your buttons or leaves you speechless. And worst of all, when your child is angry, nothing is fair, and it’s never his/her fault.

If your child thinks it’s somebody else’s fault or that something isn’t fair, he’ll/she’ll be able to justify a lot of inappropriate behavior…

You’ll often see kids blame others and point the finger at someone else when you hold them accountable for their behavior. Very often they see themselves as the victim, no matter how aggressive or abusive their behavior is. Thinking of themselves this way gives them the ability, in their mind, not to take any responsibility—and if you don’t take responsibility, then you won’t have to change.

A Participatory Book Study: Sundays, February 2nd, 9th, 16th Rev. Wendy and Chuck Kolakowski will be facilitating a seven-week study called Growing Up: A Lifelong Journey during the Sunday School hour. This study provides a space and place to reflect, discuss, and pray with others, guided by a set of seven conversations exploring three life-defining questions: Who is God? Who am I? What does God desire to do through me? What is tucked into these conversations is sacred ground, an invitation to explore these questions of life and living well. Particular attention is paid to the book of Ephesians— “We must no longer be children…but we must grow up in every way into him, into Christ…” (Ephesians 4:14-16). What does it mean for us today to grow up into Christ-maturity? On Bold Women’s Sunday, February 23rd in the Celebration Center our guest will be Kris Totzke, Assistant to Bishop Gronberg, Bishop of the Northern Texas and Northern Louisiana Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Kris will share with us the life, ministry and well-being of the synod and national church. This forum will take place in the Celebration Center from 9:45 am-10:45 am.

The geographical area of the NT-NL Synod includes Northern Louisiana including Shreveport; Northern Texas generally North of a line from Marshall, Longview, Tyler, Rosebud, Bartlett (Temple area), Killeen,

San Angelo, Midland/Odessa; and also Durant, Oklahoma, and Clovis, New Mexico.

Stephen Ministers Look Forward to A New Year

While listening to the radio I heard Barry Manilow sing a song titled “It’s Just Another New Year’s Eve”.

Immediately I wondered how many people look at each year as “just another year”. Not me!

It is good to look back at the previous year to see the many experiences, good and bad, we have faced. We

must believe they are stepping stones to our lives that help us grow. Certainly, it is important for us to learn

from our past and to incorporate the wisdom we have obtained to help us in the future. No matter the

situation, the Lord is with us. He will lead and guide us as we seek Him.

Isaiah 58:11 says: “The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and

will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail”.

As we look into the New Year we can look with fresh eyes filled with faith, trust, and hope.

Psalm 39:7 states: “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you”. Also Psalm 25:5 – “Guide me

in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, as my hope is in you all day long”

Barry Manilow may feel that New Year is just another day or each New Year is the same as the last, but our

thoughts should be of expectation for what the Lord has for us. Whether it is a need for a better job,

increase in finances, healing of our bodies, salvation of loved ones, a new home or car, or whatever your

need may be.

I remember as a single parent having great needs to care for myself and my son. One time, as I was crying

out to the Lord to help me, I heard His words to me, “Who have you blessed lately?”

This was a clear message to give to others even with my lack of confidence so that I too could be blessed.

It’s a kingdom principle to give and it will be given to you.

Our lives will be full of blessings in the New Year as we trust God, share His love with those around us, and walk into each new day with great confidence in God’s faithfulness. BUT you don’t have to do it alone, a Stephen Minister can be the support that you need to see you through the tough time and to encourage you to see each challenge as a fresh start to NOT JUST ANOTHER NEW YEAR, but one of great joy and promise!

Mosaic NewsMosaic News

December 11, 2019 Today we announced to our Texas staff, the people we support and families and guardians that Mosaic will be transitioning all of our services in Texas to Caregiver, Inc., a Texas-based provider of services. The transition will be complete in early February. There are many reasons for this decision, but the fundamental one is Mosaic cannot sustain the losses we are incurring across the state and have the resources we need to grow and thrive. We believe that an organization with a stronger presence in Texas will be better suited to provide services more effectively in the state. I know this comes as a surprise, but we believe this will be better for the people served and for Texas staff and contractors. Caregiver's larger presence in Texas will enable that organization to operate more efficiently and effectively in the state. Depending upon your location, you may have a Caregiver affiliate in your area Caregiver operates under the names of Daybreak, Southern Concepts, St. Giles Living Centers, Unified Care Group and River Gardens. This was not an easy decision for Mosaic. Texas is a part of our identity as an organization and many employees have personal connections they treasure in the state. Thank you for your support and partnership in Mosaic's mission, not only in Texas, but across the United States. Without the community support we've known, Mosaic could not have remained in Texas for as long as we have. I'm sure you recognize this is a difficult time for Mosaic's Texas staff, the people we support, their families, our donors and volunteers. I ask you to keep them in thought and prayer as we move forward. Thank you for your partnership in serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Linda Timmons, President and CEO

whom Martin relied, we celebrate her life and her contribution to our present day

religion. Please make sure you pick up a Katie's Fund Box to gather your change for

the next few months. They will be collected on Bold Women's Sunday on February

23, 2020. Katie’s Fund is an endowment that supports ministry in three areas:

leadership development, global connections, and living theology. Katie’s Fund is

now more than $1 million. Women of the ELCA established Katie’s Fund in 1997 to

honor the legacy of Katharina von Bora Luther, raise up bold leaders for the church

wide women’s organization, and support bold and creative ministry for generations to come.

The women of Resurrection are proud to be supporters of this mission - so pick up your Katie's

Box in the Narthex!

ACTION TEAM PROJECTS FOR 2020

Are you a benefit member of Thrivent? If so, we could use your help in applying to Thrivent for seed money for a number of service projects and fundraisers at Resurrection Lutheran Church. It is a quick and easy way to bring in additional funding to Resurrection’s annual budget. There are currently about 75 Thrivent benefit members at Resurrection. Each benefit member can have up to two projects per year each funded by a $250 pre-paid VISA card. Associate members can have up to one project per year. That is $37,500 that does not have to be funded by Resurrection’s annual budget!

We did fourteen Action Team grants in 2019 for a total of $3,500! Keep this Thrivent program in mind as you plan activities for 2020. Below is the current status of 2020 projects:
