WordQuest Speaker at ICS Today: Parents Ask Your Student About It!
The students, teachers, and staff are focused on writing this year with our WordQuest (formerly
Young Authors) writing celebration. For WordQuest, each student will write an original story, essay,
or poetry collection, all of which will be on display for special events in May. Special speaker, Amy
Parsons Meadows shared with us today. Amy is a wife and mother of three girls and lives with her
family in Richmond, Virginia. With her background in education, Amy has had a lifetime love of
books before venturing into writing. Her most recent book is part of the Sweet Frog Bible Stories
Series and is entitled Freddy Meets His Goliath. In addition to her experiences as a writer and teacher,
Amy has enjoyed serving in missions with her family.

A Note from Mrs. Seat - Our Art Teacher
Our young artists are working hard and creating some amazing work during their art period! If you
haven't had a chance to visit the new Gallery please take a minute to admire the creative talents of our
students the next time you are in the building. It is located on the wall between the Spanish classroom
and the Third Grade classrooms and exhibits will be rotating through frequently.
Art Smocks Needed: The Art Department could use a little help refreshing our art smocks. If you
have any used men's short sleeve or long sleeve dress shirts that you would be willing to donate

Immanuel's Got Talent!
It's time for the Second Annual ICS Talent Show...Immanuel's Got Talent! We saw some great talent last
year, and everyone is excited to see what this year brings! We are looking for a variety of acts from our
4th through 8th grade students, which will be showcased during an all school assembly on Friday,
April 26. Acts may be individual or group, and should be no longer than 4 minutes in length. Students
must sign up in their homerooms by Friday, March 15 to audition. All acts may not be chosen, due to
time restrictions. Auditions will be held during lunch/recess on Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday,
March 21. If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Umble.
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week - March 11-15
At ICS, we celebrate this week at a different time than Hallmark and other schools who usually do it
in late spring. The Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) is preparing to honor all of our teachers and staff
at a special luncheon to be held in the Atrium on Tuesday, March 12.
Gift Baskets: At the luncheon, the PTF will again offer the popular gift basket raffle, a
favorite tradition which the teachers look forward to each year. The honorees are given (free)
raffle tickets to "bid" on their theme basket of choice. The theme baskets are put together by
the creative efforts and generous donations of ICS parents.
Donations: We are currently accepting donations of all kinds to go into the themed gift
baskets. Donations may be large or small, creative or simple, but many are needed -- and all
are appreciated. Parents may provide items and gift cards to go into the gift baskets or they
may use their own creativity and talents to put together a complete theme basket. Certificates
for services and gift certificates from your work or personal business are also very much
appreciated. And remember that any scrip gift cards purchased directly from ICS also
benefits the school.
Sign Up to Help: Please take a look at the attached Sign Up Genius we have set up and let
us know how you might help. Deadline for donations is Friday, February 22.
Please know that this is completely optional and we appreciate any help you can provide with this
project. With your help, we can show our teachers our tremendous gratitude for their daily work in
our children's lives and send them all home with something fun and memorable. Items and complete
theme baskets may be left with the Receptionists marked "PTF Teacher/Staff Appreciation Basket
Raffle" If you have any questions or want to assist with this effort, please contact Pam O'Meara.
Want to Pre-Order your School Supplies for 2013-2014?
School Kidz, a program through Staples, offers the opportunity for
students to "pre-order" their school supplies for next year. Each order is
customized to the supplies needed by the specific grade level. ICS is
participating in this program and you will soon have the opportunity
to order your supplies and have them delivered at the end of the
school year in a handy box! This is an optional program we are offering
to our families to make it more convenient to purchase their school
supplies for the next school year. Order forms are expected to go home
the middle of March with your child, so watch for your forms soon!
The time period to order will between March 11 and March 22. Kits can
be ordered by returning the order form to ICS (a check must accompany your order), or order online
through a link that will be on our website. All orders will be due on Friday, March 22. Orders will be
delivered the week of May 26. Watch for a display coming soon near the school office.

STEM Competition
We took two teams of girls to Foxcroft School in Middleburg, VA to compete at a STEM summit this
past weekend.
Team Neutron: Hannah Adams (8th grade), Cam Chisolm (8th grade), Ashley Kim (7th grade),
Loza Teodros (7th grade)
Team Uranium: Angie Arquette-Overman (8th grade), Sheeba Prince (7th grade), Nardos
Mecuria (7th grade), Joanne Kim (7th grade).
The girls competed against 22 other teams representing 13 other area middle schools. The competition
is sponsored by K2M a company in Leesburg, Virginia that makes spinal implants. There were 6
different team challenges ranging from solving mysteries in biology and chemistry labs, knocking
down block buildings and cracking codes to identifying rocks and minerals. While ICS did not win
any team prizes, Ashley Kim won a Vera Bradley Bag in the individual raffle for correctly answering
science and math questions. The girls had lots of fun seeing the Science and Chemistry labs at
Foxcroft while learning some fun and challenging ways to use critical thinking in science, math, and
engineering.
Concussion Workshop
The FCPS Parent Resource Center is presenting a workshop on importnat things for parents to know
about head injuries and concussions. Although much of the concussion information supplied "out
there" is related to sports injuries, this workshop will provide an overview of concussions resulting
from various activities, including those involving sports injuries. See the attached flyer for more
details.
Serve-A-Thon Volunteers Needed - Help Us Plan Now for Next year!
We recently wrapped up Serve-A-Thon 2012 but are already busy thinking about Serve-A-Thon 2013!
We are looking for parents who would be willing to serve as classroom "cheerleaders"! As a
Classroom Cheerleader you would go into the classroom weekly to encourage students in their
fundraising efforts, give updates and generate enthusiasm. We would be able to provide you with
materials and guidelines for your class visits. Are you willing to step into this role next year for your
child's class? If you are interested in learning more please contact Susan Huber or Beverly Atkinson.
Uniform Dress Code for 2013-2014
We have been transitioning to the Lands' End uniforms this year. This Fall, all uniforms should be
purchased through Land's End in order to match exactly the style and color of the uniform dress
code. Click here for the uniform details. Thank you for your cooperation in making our school
excellent in all ways!
Meetings for Rising 9th Graders

your high school's orientation for rising freshmen or the general
curriculum orientation.

Volunteer & Employment Opportunities
Lunch Help Needed on Tuesdays
Help is needed on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the lunchroom. Please email Carroll
Olson if you are able to serve in this way.
Hot Lunch Help Needed on Wednesdays
Servers Needed: We are in need of 5 to 6 parents to serve hot lunch each week on
Wednesdays. It is a once-a-month commitment for about 2 ½ hours on Wednesdays between
11:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. It is a great way to fulfill your parent service hours. It is always a
blessing to serve side by side as a team interacting with the students and other ICS parents.
We'll even treat you to lunch. Contact Lori Slattery.

Shoppers Needed: We also need volunteer shoppers (5) for drinks and snack for the hot
lunch program. Again, this is a once a month commitment with the added flexibility of
shopping and delivering the goods to ICS at your convenience. This is a great way to
earn parent service hours. For interest in any of the Hot Lunch openings please, e-mail Lori
Slattery or call her cell at 703-338-8828.
