First Sunday of Lent

First Reading Gn 9:8-15

God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descend-ants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild ani-mals that were with you and came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth.” God added: “This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made be-tween me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R. Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior.

Remember that your compassion, O LORD, and your love are from of old. In your kindness remember me, because of your goodness, O LORD.

Good and upright is the LORD, thus he shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and he teaches the humble his way.

Second Reading 1 Pt 3:18-22

Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in pris-on, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and pow-ers subject to him.

Gospel Mk 1:40-45

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee pro-claiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

Pensamientos/Reflexiones sobre el evangelio de esta semana

El primer domingo de Cuaresma, la lectura del Evangelio en cada ciclo del Leccionario trata sobre la tentación de Jesús en el

desierto. Este evento en la vida de Jesús se informa en cada uno de los evangelios sinópticos (Mateo, Marcos y Lucas), pero

no se encuentra en el evangelio de Juan. Este año leímos el relato de Marcos sobre este evento. En comparación con los

evangelios de Mateo y Lucas, los detalles a lo largo de la narrativa de Marcos son escasos. Esto es evidente en el relato de

Marcos sobre la tentación de Jesús en el desierto. Marcos nos dice solo que Jesús fue llevado al desierto por el Espíritu y que

durante 40 días fue tentado por Satanás. Los Evangelios de Mateo y Lucas explican que Jesús ayunó mientras estaba en el

Thoughts/Reflections about this week’s gospel reading On the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading in each Lectionary cycle is about Jesus’ temptation in the desert. This event in the life of Jesus is reported in each of the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—but it is not found in John’s Gospel. This year we read Mark’s account of this event. Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details throughout Mark’s narrative are sparse. This is evident in Mark’s account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempt-ed by Satan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with three temptations, and that Jesus re-fused each one, quoting Scripture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark report that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert. In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the temptation of Jesus follows his baptism by John the Baptist. In Mark’s Gospel, we are told that Jesus went into the desert immediately after his baptism, led by the Spirit. Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark’s Gospel makes a connection between the arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus’ preaching about the Kingdom of God is in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist, but it is also something new. As Jesus announces it, the Kingdom of God is beginning; the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises is here. The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also jour-neyed in the desert for 40days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an angel of the Lord. Remembering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of Lent. In

Mark’s Gospel, the desert marks beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten observances are only a beginning, a preparation for and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of Baptism in which we promised to reject sin and to

follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed because Jesus conquered sin once and for all in his saving death on the cross.

Primer Domingo de Cuaresma: lecturas dominicales Primera Lectura Gn 9, 8-15

En aquellos días, dijo Dios a Noé y a sus hijos: “Ahora establezco una alianza con ustedes y con sus descendientes, con todos los ani-males que los acompañaron, aves, ganados y fieras, con todos los que salieron del arca, con todo ser viviente sobre la tierra. Ésta es la alianza que establezco con ustedes: No volveré a exterminar la vida con el diluvio, ni habrá otro diluvio que destruya la tierra”. Y añadió: “Ésta es la señal de la alianza perpetua que yo establezco con ustedes y con todo ser viviente que esté con ustedes. Pondré mi arco iris en el cielo como señal de mi alianza con la tierra, y cuando yo cubra de nubes la tierra, aparecerá el arco iris y me acordaré de mi alianza con ustedes y con todo ser viviente. No volverán las aguas del diluvio a destruir la vida”.

Segunda Lectura 1 Pt 3, 18-22

Hermanos: Cristo murió, una sola vez y para siempre, por los pe-cados de los hombres; él, el justo, por nosotros, los injustos, para llevarnos a Dios; murió en su cuerpo y resucitó glorificado. En esta ocasión, fue a proclamar su mensaje a los espíritus encarcelados, que habían sido rebeldes en los tiempos de Noé, cuando la paciencia de Dios aguardaba, mientras se construía el arca, en la que unos pocos, ocho personas, se salvaron flotando sobre el agua. Aquella agua era figura del bautismo, que ahora los salva a ustedes y que no consiste en quitar la inmundicia corporal, sino en el compromiso de vivir con una buena conciencia ante Dios, por la resurrección de Cristo Jesús, Señor nuestro, que subió al cielo y está a la derecha de Dios, a quien están sometidos los ángeles, las potestades y las virtudes.

Evangelio Mc 1, 12-15

En aquel tiempo, el Espíritu impulsó a Jesús a retirarse al desierto, donde permaneció cuarenta días y fue tentado por Satanás. Vivió allí

entre animales salvajes, y los ángeles le servían. Después de que arrestaron a Juan el Bautista, Jesús se fue a Galilea para predicar el Evangelio de Dios y decía: “Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y cre-an en el Evangelio”.
