Welcome to beautiful Palm Springs — an oasis in the California desert! From Greta Garbo and Clark Gable to Frank Capra and Shirley Temple, the La Quinta Resort & Club has been a desert hideaway and home for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars since the 1920s. And I’m excited to share this beautiful location and experience with some of NAR’s biggest stars — our President’s Circle members!

2019 is going to be a great year for us. As we kick off our 19th annual President’s Circle Conference, we are also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC). As we highlight our success and influence from Capitol Hill to statehouses and city halls across the country, our goal is to have every member owning their role as community champions, participating in and advocating for the future of the real estate industry, and sharing and telling stories of our success.

President’s Circle is a banner program for NAR. Year over year we have broken records in the number of REALTOR® President’s Circle members. I’m excited to let you know that last year was no different with 1,258 members! That level of commitment and achievement couldn’t happen without investors like you — thank you!

While I hope you find your oasis and enjoy yourselves, please use the next few days as an opportunity to learn from each other and gain insight from the stellar line up of political zeitgeists.

Enjoy and thank you for all you do,

John Smaby 2019 President National Association of REALTORS®

DAVID GERGEN

David Gergen is a professor of public service and Director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, positions he has held for over a decade. In addition, he serves as a senior political analyst for CNN and works actively with a rising generation of new leaders. In

the past, he has served as a White House adviser to four U.S. presidents of both parties: Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. He wrote about those experiences in his New York Times best seller, Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton (Simon & Schuster, 2001).

In the 1980s, he began a career in journalism. Starting with The MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour in 1984, he has been a regular commentator on public affairs for some 30 years. Twice he has been a member of election coverage teams that won Peabody awards, and he has contributed to two Emmy award-winning political analysis teams. In the late 1980s, he was chief editor of U.S. News & World Report, working with publisher Mort Zuckerman to achieve record gains in circulation and advertising.

Through the generosity of outside donors, the Center helps to provide scholarships to more than 100 students a year, preparing them to serve as leaders for the common good. The Center also promotes scholarship at the frontiers of leadership studies.

Born and raised in New Mexico, Congressman Ben Ray Luján grew up in Nambé, a small farming community north of Santa Fe, bordered by the pueblos of Nambé and Pojoaque.

Since being sworn into Congress in 2008, Congressman Luján has worked to create good-paying jobs in New Mexico, increase access to affordable, quality health care, protect New Mexico’s natural resources, build a clean energy economy, and restore checks and balances in our government. He is a member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, sitting on the Health Subcommittee, Consumer Protection & Commerce Subcommittee, and the Communications & Technology Subcommittee.

Congressman Luján has focused on spurring local economic growth through a number of legislative initiatives. His bill to make it easier for local entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to the marketplace was signed into law. He has also written legislation that would leverage New Mexico’s labs to drive job creation while addressing tomorrow’s energy challenges. And, the Congressman is a strong supporter of expanding access to broadband to close the digital divide in underserved communities.

He has also been a fierce advocate for environmental protection in New Mexico. Luján was part of an effort during the Obama administration to establish a national monument designation for the Rio Grande del Norte National Conservation Area Establishment Act, preserving one of New Mexico’s great treasures.

Luján is a long-time advocate for New Mexico’s acequias and traditional lands. He continually works to ensure adequate funding for these cultural assets through both the legislation he has authored and through the Farm Bill. He’s also supports rural farming and ranching by securing grants to help food producing communities advance entrepreneurship.

Throughout his time in Congress, Luján has fought to increase New Mexicans’ access to quality health care. He has had legislation signed into law to bolster the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), strengthen Medicaid and Medicare, and combat the opioid crisis. He has also secured behavioral health care funding for expanded prevention, treatment, and recovery services in New Mexico and across the country.

In 2013, Congressman Luján was appointed to the House Democratic Leadership as a Chief Deputy Whip. In the 114th Congress, Luján served as Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and was elected by his colleagues to again serve in this role for the 115th Congress. He currently serves as the Assistant Speaker in the 116th Congress.

Congressman Luján earned his Bachelor’s degree from New Mexico Highlands University in Business Administration.

K al Penn is known for his starring roles in House, 24, the Harold and Kumar franchise, and forthcoming ABC series Designated Survivor. Though there is a tradition of Hollywood stars campaigning for politicians, Penn may be the only one in recent memory to take a sabbatical

from his career midstream to work full time in politics. From 2009 to 2011, he was an Associate Director at the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he primarily served as President Obama’s Liaison to Young Americans (focusing on, among other issues, outreach around “don’t ask, don’t tell,” increasing financial aid, and young veterans).

During his years at The Office of Public Engagement, Penn also served as the president’s liaison to Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, engaging them in a variety of initiatives.

Penn recently hosted The Big Picture with Kal Penn, a National Geographic TV series currently on Netflix that uses data and mapping to make powerful connections and visualize our world in amazing new ways. Each episode uncovers surprising facts on a topic (like money, sex, food, crime, migrations or sports), revealing how our world works, how we got here, and even where we’re headed — while exploring powerful stories from the real people and communities behind the data.

Penn has appeared on the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother, and has hosted The Big Brain Theory, a competition to find the nation’s brightest engineer, on the Discovery Channel. On the big screen, Penn has starred in various independent films and blockbusters, including three Harold and Kumar movies, Superman Returns, and Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain (alongside Martin Sheen and Mischa Barton). The New York Times called his lead role in Mira Nair’s The Namesake a, “crackling, star-making performance.” Penn has also taught courses at the University of Pennsylvania, and University of California, Los Angeles.
