FATHER JARETT’S CATHOLIC Q & A

This is the fourth of a 10 part series “Faith and Reasons Behind the Mass.”

Are Catholics discouraged from reading the bible?

No. There is a common myth out there that in the recent history of the Catholic Church, the faithful were discouraged from reading the bible. First of all, the idea of reading the bible with your family at home is a fairly modern experience; only within the last couple hundred years has this practice been affordable and feasible. Not to mention that in previous generations literacy was a luxury that was not possessed by the majority. Did you know that even today in the 21st century there exist traditionally Catholic nations that have over 50 percent illiteracy? Thus, besides being able to afford a bible, people could not read it. Any moves in the history of the Church to keep the scriptures from being translated into the vernacular (spoken) language were for fear of bad translations and misinterpretation of the Word of God. Was this a legitimate fear? One has only to look at the number of denominations of Christianity that claim the same book of scripture as their “only” authority and see there are some 30,000 divisions all based upon the personal interpretations of the same book. We are reading the same pages but we are not all on the same page. Catholics are encouraged to read the bible and at the same time are encouraged to trust that the Holy Spirit has in the past and continues today in guiding the Church in its inerrant interpretation of the Word of God. Do Catholics hear the bible proclaimed at Mass? As Catholics, our liturgy is steeped in the scriptures. Almost every word spoken at mass has its roots somewhere in the bible. Here are some wonderful resources that might help you to realize just how much our worship is rooted in the bible. Catholic for a Reason III by various Catholic authors and Worthy is the Lamb by Thomas Nash. Also check out this website link. http://thiscatholicjourney.com/2009/04/scripture-in-mass_05.html The mass is divided into two parts; the liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. At every Sunday Mass, we as Catholics hear four separate readings taken directly from the bible. The four readings consist of a first reading from the Old Testament (except during Easter when we read the Acts of the Apostles), one of the 150 psalms, a second reading from the New Testament letters (St. Paul, St. Peter, St. James, etc.), and a reading from one of the four Gospels.

FEBRUARY 12TH, 2017 ~ SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME These readings are not just chosen at random or according to the personal decision of the pastor as can happen at many Christian churches, but the readings follow a three year cycle, used throughout the entire Catholic world (Catholics in Madagascar are hearing the same readings as Hays, KS). During this three year cycle we hear the significant points of the Old Testament and almost all the New Testament so that after three years we hear the entirety of our Salvation History proclaimed to us from the Scriptures. What other church can make this claim? The readings are set according to themes in Jesus’ ministry as well as according to the Liturgical seasons. My final suggestion for the Liturgy of the Word at mass is prepare yourself. Go over the readings ahead of time with your family, or at least ask God in prayer to speak to you through His Word at mass. God speaks to us through the scriptures in a way that is unique to any other in this world, do we prepare our hearts to accept His message every week during the Liturgy of the Word?

A Family Perspective …by Bud Ozar

To experience the peace which Christ promises we must shed our grudges, jealousy and feelings of being misunderstood, unappreciated or ignored. Peace and anger don’t mix. Today’s gospel warns, if you want peace in your heart and home, get rid of your anger. Anger is too costly.

Always pray to have… Eyes that see the best in people, a Heart that forgives the worst

a Mind that forgets the worst and a Soul that Never loses faith in God.
