Central Saanich

Here in Central Saanich we have a rich and diverse community with an exceptional quality of life afforded by wonderful natural places like Centennial Park and deep agricultural roots worthy of the rural setting, all a short distance to downtown Victoria.

The village atmospheres of Brentwood Bay and Saanichton combine with the service oriented approach of the Keating Business Park to create an attractive atmosphere for small and medium sized businesses to locate conveniently on a transportation route between the ferries, Victoria Airport and the heart of the city. We recognize the need for business to thrive is created by having customers in their neighbourhood, while expansion is dependent on customers coming from around the region and beyond.

As it has in the past Central Saanich remains committed to creating policies that foster an environment that is welcoming for entrepreneurs to create new jobs by developing new and existing industries such as high tech, manufacturing, construction and engineering services. The infrastructure built by the district is well suited to accommodate this objective.

Current businesses such as those in retail, tourism, and agriculture amongst others will be joined by new sectors as we move forward with policies to further enhance the diversity of housing options available to people who wish to live and work on the Peninsula. Strong co-operation with our neighbouring municipalities on the Peninsula will continue to play a vital role in the strength of the community.

North Saanich

Beautiful District of North Saanich is the fi rst community you will see when you arrive on the Saanich Peninsula, whether by air or sea. We are the gateway to the south Island region, the location of Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries’ Swartz Bay Terminal.

Transportation and related commercial activity comprise a major segment of our local businesses. A second sector is government. The Federal Institute of Ocean Sciences and the Federal Centre for Plant Health both house extensive scientifi c research in their respective fi elds. With a third of our land area in the Agricultural Land Reserve, it is not surprising that agriculture is our third major economic sector. Both large and small farm operations contribute to the variety of food producing activities in the District. A volunteer-run farm market operates on Saturdays from April to October each year.

Our business activities extend beyond these sectors, with the location and physical aspects of North Saanich encouraging marine, high tech and many home-based businesses plus large and small commercial endeavors. All of these are enhanced by the heathy living and safe community found in the District, with our extensive walking trails, beach accesses, viewpoints and magnifi cent parks.

mayor Alice Finall

Sidney

Sidney-by-the-Sea is the gateway to Vancouver Island. Our beautiful seaside community with its alluring, small-town charm attracts people from around the world to visit and relocate.

But Sidney is more than just a “pretty face”; it is a place with a long-term, community plan that supports business and development. It is perfectly situated as the transportation hub for the Island with Highway 17, the main thoroughfare, running through the community and easy access to all major modes of travel. The Swartz Bay, BC Ferry Terminal, Washington State Ferry Terminal and Victoria Airport, are all within a 10 minute drive.

Our pedestrian friendly, walkable downtown with its popular, boutique shopping district attracts locals and visitors alike. In addition, we have a dynamic, manufacturing and high-tech business community, two prominent industrial areas, and we are home to a large number of marine enterprises featuring a fi shing fl eet and a working harbour.

Sidney is a vibrant seaside community that offers an unparalleled lifestyle and we are committed to ensuring a strong, economic future for all generations.

mayor Steve Price

What’s

Welcome to the Saanich Peninsula!Welcome to the 2016 Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Member & Community Directory. It is intended to act as a useful resource guide and an introduction to the community for newcomers. We hope it also serves to remind you of what our organization and our members are involved in. The reasons for living and doing business here are countless. The setting is visually stunning. The climate accommodates year-round recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, hiking and cycling. We have easy access to reliable transportation for goods and people. The setting and lifestyle opportunities are the roots from which our community has grown. We are home to restaurants, farms, arts & culture, technology & manufacturing fi rms, service industries and tourist attractions. The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has been building community through business since 1912. The Peninsula has a rich history and a promising future. The businesses support the sports teams and arts and culture and contribute to “community” in many more ways than might be readily apparent. We encourage you to get to know your Chamber members; they are leaders, mentors, trailblazers and visionaries, but perhaps most importantly, they are your neighbours.

Welcome...to the Saanich PeninsulaThe Saanich Peninsula is home to the communities of North

Saanich, Sidney, and Central Saanich as well as northern portions

of Saanich (Royal Oak) and north eastern portions of the Highlands.

The Saanich Peninsula is the historical homeland of four Coast

Salish First Nations bands: Tseycum, Tsawout, Tsartlip, and

Pauquachin. The Saanich Peninsula represents an area rich

in archaeological sites and cultural diversity. The region lies

in the rain shadow of the Vancouver Island mountain range

and Washington’s Olympic Peninsula mountain range,

and offers the driest conditions on Vancouver Island.

Members of the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce conclude that the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island is an idyllic location in which to reside but also to thrive in business. The Saanich Peninsula hosts some of Vancouver Island’s largest employers, including BC Ferries, Butchart Gardens, and the Victoria Airport Authority. From high tech to high tea, the Peninsula has it all.

transPortationThe District of North Saanich represents Southern Vancouver Island’s transportation hub. The Victoria International Airport and the BC Ferries terminal at Swartz Bay provide service to those travelling within Canada and internationally. Both Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries are minutes from the Peninsula’s main commercial district, on the eastern side of the Saanich Peninsula, Sidney by the Sea. Located in Patricia Bay on the western side of the Peninsula the Pat Bay Seaplane Base provides service

to the Saanich Inlet to both industrial and tourism communities.

The Town of Sidney owns the ferry terminal that welcomes the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes Washington for nine months of the year. The ferry runs from its home base to Orcas Island and Friday Harbour, Washington before docking in Sidney. The Three-hour international run “between friends” is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful “short cruises” in the world and its fi rst voyage in March heralds the return of tourism season on the Saanich Peninsula.

The Peninsula is served by BC Transit buses, including the iconic double-deckers, which run regularly between Swartz Bay, Sidney, Saanichton, and Victoria. BC Ferries operates a small terminal located in the heart of Brentwood Bay. This ferry carries passengers across the Saanich Inlet to Mill Bay and is a relaxing scenic alternative to driving the Malahat (Trans-Canada) Highway.

industryThe Saanich Peninsula economy is driven by a diverse cross-section of business and industry that includes aviation, marine, science and high tech, manufacturing, agriculture, retail, and tourism. Many Saanich Peninsula businesses are active in the world market place.

The Victoria Airport Authority is a major employer on the Saanich Peninsula. The airport welcomed more than 1.7 million domestic and international passengers to our region in 2015 and is projecting 2.0 million passengers by 2020.

Lands surrounding the Victoria Airport are home to several high-profile companies. For instance, Viking Air, renowned as a world-class aviation company, produces and maintains de Havilland aviation products to both domestic and international customers. VIH Aviation Group, comprising a variety of companies and divisions, operates a fleet of helicopters and a major helicopter repair and overhaul centre as well as charter services and a fixed

wing corporate jet charter business – for customers throughout the world. Victoria Air Maintenance Ltd. has long been recognized as one of North America’s leading aircraft restoration and heavy maintenance facilities.

Another established aviation company is Pacific Coastal Airlines which flies to more than 65 destinations in British Columbia. Pacific Sky Aviation and the Victoria Flying Club round out the aviation sector with their flight training and charter services.

Thrifty Foods operates a 152,000 square foot Retail Support Centre near the airport. This centre services 20 Vancouver Island locations, one on Salt Spring Island, eight Lower Mainland locations and, through a wholesale division, more than 40 independent grocers province-wide.

Located to the west of the airport, on Patricia Bay in the Saanich Inlet, the Institute of Ocean Sciences employs more than 250 scientists

and researchers and is one of Canada’s largest marine institutes. The institute has earned international recognition for its work in ocean sciences.

The West Sidney Industrial Park, lying adjacent to, but just north of the Victoria Airport, is highly regarded locally and internationally as a centre of innovative marine and industrial design and manufacturing. Nicholson Manufacturing operates a state of the art facility which specializes in the manufacture of ring debarkers for the forest products industry around the world. Nicholson has been doing business for over 60 years.

In business since 1955, EMCS Industries Ltd has been pioneering Electrolytic Marine Solutions for Anti Fouling in the marine industry. More recently they have been offering Ultrasound solutions for the prevention of biofouling. Their products are sold internationally to customers that comprise some of the largest ship owners and boat builders in the industry.

tourismNext to industry, tourism is the biggest economic driver and employer on the Saanich Peninsula. As home to world renowned Butchart Gardens, the most famous attraction west of Niagara Falls, the peninsula draws visitors annually, from around the globe – and locals enjoy the pleasures and treasures of the Gardens, year ‘round.

Although The Butchart Gardens is a “must see” for tourists, the lure of a number of other attractions means there is more to explore on the Saanich Peninsula! At Butterfly Gardens, located in Brentwood Bay, just up the road from The Butchart Gardens, visitors delight in the colourful displays of myriad live butterflies and tropical birds. Further south on the peninsula, is the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, home to Glendale Gardens, where visitors can stroll amongst over 10,000 plant species.

Sidney is a book lover’s delight. As Canada’s only Booktown, Sidney is home to a unique collection of specialty bookshops, all operated by owners who are experts in their field. They offer special collections that feature thousands of titles and categories. You can’t walk down Beacon Avenue, Sidney’s main street, without encountering an interesting collection of books.

Every Thursday evening during the summer months - from mid-May through August - Beacon Avenue comes alive with the Sidney Street Market. This popular event stretches out for four blocks and features an eclectic array of enticing wares, from the artistic to the agricultural, plus great live music placed at strategic intervals throughout. It’s a favourite with visitors. Thousands attend this vibrant market

each week and locals love the opportunity to purchase fresh produce from area farmers.

Plenty of adventure is to be had on the Saanich Peninsula, ocean-going or otherwise. Whale watching with Sidney Whale Watching is high on the list of “must-do” activities for many visitors. The more introspective may enjoy eco-cruising with Sidney Harbour Cruising, or a kayaking adventure with Paddle in the Park. Boaters and more adventuresome kayakers will want to take in the wonders of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve which includes all of the Gulf Islands and surrounding waters. During the summer months, the Alpine Sidney Spit Ferry makes the short run from a dock at the end of Beacon Avenue to Sidney Island.

Visitors can take their pick of accommodations on the peninsula, from the high end to more modest lodgings, from hotels to bed and breakfasts. The peninsula also offers a wonderful variety of dining experiences. Sidney’s main street, in particular, is dotted with coffee shops, bakeries, and fine and

are packed and shipped to the Canadian Cancer Society and to points across North America.

In early April the peninsula’s soil gives up the first tender vegetables of the season. Strong green shoots, line up smartly in gently furrowed fields, hold the promise of what’s to come.

By May, growing season is in full swing and roadside stands and farm markets are buzzing with home cooks and local chefs. Plump, red June strawberries are a favourite at farmers’ markets in North and Central Saanich and at the Sidney Street Market. There are ripe raspberries and blueberries galore and the fields at Victoria Lavender Farm are bursting with colour and fragrance by June’s end. And by that time, everything but the peninsula’s renowned sweet corn is ready for market.

And if you’d like to see who grows this bounty and find out how everything is grown and perhaps sample some of the local foods and/

or wines and ciders, take in one of the Flavour Trails on the peninsula. Strike out on your own or enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cyclists as they tour the peninsula farms, gardens and wineries on two wheels!

Pickling, canning and freezing of the harvest carries on into the fall. Finally, pumpkins bring up the rear of the growing season, dotting the landscape with fields of bright orange through October. Pick your own pumpkin at the various u-picks or find one at a local market and create your masterpiece for Halloween or Thanksgiving!

Our wineries, cider/beer makers and distillers are gaining a global reputation for making award-winning product. Some of your favourites may include Muse Winery in North Saanich, and in Central Saanich we suggest you visit de Vine Wines & Spirits, Church & State Wines, Sea Cider Farm and Category 12 Brewing. Opening this spring in Sidney is Victoria Distillers in their unique waterfront location at Seaport Place.

Dealing with stressStress can motivate you to finish a project on time, or it can severely

impact your ability to get things accomplished.

Stress can motivate you to finish a project on time, or it can severely impact your ability to get things accomplished. Your body is hard-wired to react to stress in ways meant to protect you from threats. Though threats of predators and other aggressors are rare today, that doesn’t mean life is free of stress. Demands of large workloads, taking care of a family, or even a morning commute can be seen by your body as threats, causing you to feel stressed. While some stress is a normal part of life, excessive stress can lead to illness including heart disease, sleep problems and digestive issues, being unproductive and distracted at work, or even time away from employment.

Unfortunately, there is no single indicator that will let you know if an employee is under excessive stress. Stress can manifest itself in many different ways, including physical, psychosocial and behavioural changes.

Given the impact of stress on productivity and health, it’s important to address the issue. One way to provide support is through an Employee Assistance Program. With an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), you can offer a helping hand to employees who may be under stress, without putting yourself in the potentially uncomfortable position of offering advice directly.

An EAP can help employees deal with personal issues before they take their toll at home or in the workplace. EAPs offer valuable advice and counselling to employees and their families, whether they are looking for assistance with family matters or divorce, caring for elderly parents, financial stress or any number of other issues.

The Chambers Plan’s EAP, Arive®, provides companies and their employees with quick

chamberplan.ca

access to appropriate professional resources to help employees resolve problems affecting health, performance and attendance. It is completely confidential, and is a simple and effective way you can help an employee reduce stress, create a health workplace and boost your company’s performance.

Although we can never completely eliminate stress from our lives, providing an employee Assistance Plan can help employees learn healthy techniques to manage stress.

Contact us to find the right co-op student for your hiring needs.

Since opening in 2009, Sidney’s Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre has been dedicated to connecting people with the marine life of the Salish Sea. With its aquarium and educational programming, the non-profit inspires the locals, tourists and school groups that come through its doors.

Even before the centre opened, co-operative education students have been instrumental. Over 20 students from the University of Victoria and Camosun College have been hired to lead public programming and summer camps, supervise volunteers and teach school groups.

For Visitor Experience Director Tina Kelly, co-op students provide cost-effective and skilled support during busy periods. “The need for additional staff is seasonal, so the timing for a summer co-op student fits perfectly. As a non-profit, we also have the opportunity to apply for additional funding to hire students for the summer.”

Kelly appreciates the knowledge students bring with them from the classroom. “Co-op students bring fresh energy and enthusiasm ,” she says. “Plus it’s rewarding to see how talking to visitors of all ages solidifies what students have learned from their professors and textbooks.”

Current UVic biology co-op student Aneka Friesen agrees. Friesen applied to work as a Lead Oceaneer because she wanted to share her passion for biology. “I quickly found myself mentally referring to concepts I’d learned in various biology classes,” she says.

In addition to gaining discipline-specific strengths, Friesen developed invaluable core competencies, including leadership and project planning skills, and the ability to take initiative.

She’s most proud, however, of the great strides she’s taken with her communication skills. “I can actually talk in front of people now, which I never would have done a year ago,” she says. “I feel comfortable enough to talk about an octopus in front of a crowd!”

As an employer, Kelly recognizes the impact that motivated students bring to her work environment.

“Our co-op students have always had a sense of determination and drive to learn and grow in their work placement,” says Kelly. “They have regularly been pro-active in requesting feedback and look for opportunities to develop skills – a great quality for any employee and a great motivator for everyone in the workplace!”

Like many corners of Vancouver Island, the Saanich Peninsula offers an abundance of opportunity, constant growth, and notorious adventure. As an area that was fi rst occupied by the Aboriginal peoples the peninsula teems with both a rich history and prominent culture. In the Saanich Peninsula area, the Salish First Nations fi rst arrived as early as 10,000 years ago creating a cultivated landmark still honoured today.

Saanich Peninsula’s written history begins in 1859, when the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula was explored by the Royal Navy survey vessel, HMS Plumper. Exploration has never been an action of the past here on the Saanich Peninsula and historians are constantly uncovering moments past through detailed archives and discovery. By the turn of the 20th century, the Saanich Peninsula was a thriving agricultural community. Cannery and industrial buildings lined the early waterfront in Sidney, BC and processed millions of tons of shellfi sh including oysters and clams along with a variety of locally grown produce.

From the fi rst people to the generations of new residents, people are passionate about the Peninsula, home to a thriving commercial base, safe and quiet neighborhoods, a diverse arts and entertainment community, and active sports/outdoor recreation scene.

The Saanich Peninsula extends north 32 kilometers from the Greater Victoria suburb of Saanich to the Swartz Bay ferry terminal. Never in

a hurry and never overdeveloped, the Saanich Peninsula boasts bucolic and picturesque districts with distinct island sensibility and charm. Its quality of life is plain to see in its friendly streets, low-rise architecture, public art, seaside promenades, walking trails, bike paths, sports fi elds, picnic areas, and beaches. Though small by geographical standards, the region is rich and diverse in land use. The Saanich Peninsula offers a paradise of its own to relax, enjoy, explore, and appreciate on whatever schedule a person may have. Enjoy the gentle topography, unique boutiques, galleries, international restaurants and conspicuously laid-back lifestyle of the Saanich Peninsula as either a resident or a visitor.

Many members of the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce are active in making Saanich Peninsula Visitor Services thrive and generate a true wealth of information for both local residents and visitors. Our visitor centres serve over 10,000 visitors per year and operate as a volunteer-driven resource for all things Saanich Peninsula and beyond. The changing tide of advertisement creates a unique and easily sourced place for chamber members to be highlighted by Destination BC Certifi ed Visitor Counsellors.
