Third Lessons Learned Workshop

Purdue University and partner organizations have led efforts to commercialize the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) technology, focussing on low-re-source farmers in different regions of the world. Many government and develop-ment agencies, NGOs, and the private sector have trained farmers how to use hermetic storage technologies. Over the last 12 years PICS bags have been commercialized in more than 34 countries in Africa, Asia, and more recently in Central America and the Caribbean. More than 60,000 communities received training that reached an estimated 6 million farmers. Since 2007 to June 2019, plastic factories around the world have manufactured and sold more than 20 million PICS bags to farmers and other users.

Scale-up activities to increase adoption of PICS bags have been implemented in several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. These efforts have included (i) large-scale extension activities that included training of extension/field agents, and training of farmers through demonstrations in villages and markets, (ii) develop-ing the supply chain by working with the private sector to ensure the technology is available in communities and local markets, and (iii) media activities – print, audio and visual (radio, posters, TV, cell phones, newspapers, etc.). Much has been learned and there is value in sharing the lessons.

The “Third PICS Lessons Learned Workshop” is being organized February 24-25, 2020 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to share the experience and lessons learned in scaling-up the adoption of PICS/hermetic bags to benefit low-resource farms by reducing postharvest losses in grains and food stuffs. This workshop will bring together partners in the commercialization of PICS/hermetic bags. The objectives of this Third PICS Lessons Learned Workshop are to:

• Provide a platform to discuss lessons learned in scaling-up the commercial-ization of PICS/hermetic bags for storing cereals, grain legumes and other food products;

• Develop new approaches/strategies to cost-effectively commercialize PICS/hermetic bags among farmers in developing countries; and

• Identify future challenges/opportunities, and collaborations/partnerships re-quired to increase the adoption of PICS/hermetic bags.

The workshop program will include oral presentations, panel discussions and group discussions. All program activities will provide opportunities to share ex-perience and provide feedback.
