In July 2018, Belmont UMC supported a Volunteers in Mission (VIM) team that traveled to Malawi to lead training sessions for fif-teen congregations on financial life and the church. This February, Herb Mather and Andy Miller will lead four Midweek at Belmont sessions inspired by these trainings and adapted for Belmonters. Come hear stories, scripture, and thoughts on financial matters and our Christian life, all with the goal of creating peace and simplicity where often there is worry and stress. These sessions will meet at 6:00 p.m. in room 203. The four sessions are: February 6: The Paradox of Abundance: Consumerism and King-dom Living. February 13: Do you Really Need that Elephant? Setting Priori-ties. February 20: Giving with the Heart and Mind: Creating Meaning through Charity. February 27: Make, Save, and Give: Wesley on Money.

Navigating our way throughThe Way Forward

Year-end giving statements have been mailed out. Beginning Friday, February 1, through April 30, you can also quickly print a copy of your giving statement by logging in to Realm (onrealm.org), click-ing “Giving,” and then clicking on the button labeled “2018 Contribution State-ment” in the top right corner. Questions? Call or email Mark Hagewood (615-383-0832 ext. 11 or [email protected]).

On Sunday, February 17 at 9:15 a.m., there will be a special church-wide Sunday school class in the Community Center on the Holocaust. Frances Cutler-Hahn, a Holocaust survivor, will speak to us about her experiences as a hidden child during the Holocaust. Her presen-tation will include photographs and will touch on the larger issues of persecution and discrimination in our world. This class was organized through Danielle Kahane-Kaminsky who is the Execu-tive Director of the Tennessee Holocaust Commission. All are welcome to attend. Go to belmontumc.org/holocaust-pro-gram to learn more.

February 23-26, the United Methodist Church will hold a special General Conference to act on a report from the Com-mission on a Way Forward to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality. On Sundays, February 3, 10, 17, and 24, join us in Parker Hall at either 9:15 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. for our series “Navigating Our Way Through the Way Forward.” We will offer a time of reflec-tion and consider how Belmont UMC’s welcoming statement guides us. We will explore legislation and pray and prepare together. Also, on February 3, we invite everyone to come to the foyer anytime from 7:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 5:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. to write notes encouraging the South East General Conference delegates to vote for inclusion and support the One Church Plan. Let us be people of open hearts, open doors, open minds!

UMW to offer program on

Adverse Childhood Experiences

On Sunday, February 10, all are invited to a lunch at 11:45 a.m. in Parker Hall. Belmonter Linda O’Neal will speak about the impact of adverse childhood experiences across the lifespan. Adverse Childhood Experiences, also known as ACEs, affect the developing brains in children and have a potential lifelong impact on health and well being. Linda O’Neal has attended Belmont UMC since 1987 and has served 30 years as executive director of the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth. In that capacity she led advocacy efforts to improve the quality of life for children and families. She will share research on ACEs and their impact over an entire lifetime. There are things individuals and organizations can do to prevent and mitigate ACEs, and Linda will share information on that also. The cost for lunch is $10 and meal reservations are due no later than Monday, February 4. Call 615-383-0832 to make your reservation. This event is sponsored by Belmont UMC’s United Methodist Women (UMW).

Your Communion offering on Sunday, February 3, will sup-port the O.N.E./Barnes Scholarship. For over two decades, Belmont UMC has supported this program in the Edgehill neighborhood to assist residents with the cost of tuition and books for post-high school educa-tion. Due in part to your contributions, scholarships in the amount of $2,000 have been awarded for 2018-2019. We ex-pect two recipients to receive degrees this year in nursing and in marketing/communications. Edgehill is undergoing many changes, making affordable housing increasingly scarce even as public housing still exists. To meet these challenges, the scholarship committee is taking an initiative to preserve op-portunities for those whose roots are in the neighborhood. Our guests today, two alumni of the scholarship program (mother and daughter) will share their stories and describe a new “legacy” scholarship option. For a short history of Edge-hill as a neighborhood, go to edgehillcoalition.org.
