For 26 years, West Virginia students have matched wits at an annual test of knowledge known as the Science Bowl. Every year, they demonstrate their scientific acumen, technical know-how, mathematical cleverness, and lightning-fast buzzer reflexes. Most importantly, Science Bowl competitors demonstrate a fierce dedication and passion for science and math. These are impressive traits—and today’s impressive teams represent the best and brightest from across the state.

Welcome to the 2017 West Virginia Regional Science Bowl (WVSB)!

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and West Virginia University (WVU) have a long history of fostering scientific inquiry and discovery. That is why we are pleased to once again host the WVSB competition. For us, this is a special opportunity to encourage young people to explore post-secondary education and career development in energy science, medicine, robotics, engineering, communications, and more. This year, we are honored to welcome a record-breaking 20 middle school teams and 24 high school teams from throughout West Virginia.

The teams assembled today have demonstrated remarkable diligence and hard work to earn a prestigious spot in the WVSB tournament. Today’s competitors are primed to be tomorrow’s researchers, pioneers, healers, educators, and leaders. With the kind of passion for science and math we will see here today, the future offers endless possibilities for future innovators and our nation.

The students and coaches here have spent many hours of preparation for today’s competition, and the WVSB organizers have planned an exciting event. We wish all our competitors the best of luck as they vie for the coveted title of champion and the chance to represent our state at the National Science Bowl this spring in Washington, D.C.

The WVSB is possible because of the continued support of the education community and corporate sponsors across West Virginia and the time and energy invested in the event by our much-appreciated volunteers.

All participants—students, coaches, volunteers—are invited to experience the complete events. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers. To our teams and coaches—have fun! We hope you enjoy the event.

DIVISION 1 CHUCK YEAGER

Chuck Yeager grew up in Hamlin, West Virginia. Early on, he took an interest in his dad’s machinery work, absorbing all he could about the machines he operated. Following a lackluster trek through high school, Yeager enlisted as an airplane mechanic with the United States Air Force during World War II. Yeager arrived in England with the 363rd fighter squadron and began flying his P-51 Mustang, which he named Glamorous Glen. After only eight missions, the 21-year-old Yeager was shot down over German-occupied France. Wounded and alone, he crossed the French Pyrenees to freedom, but then appealed to General Dwight D. Eisenhower to remain in combat.

In 1947, Mr. Yeager was selected as the pilot to fly the experimental X-1 aircraft—a bullet-shaped plane with razor-thin wings and four powerful rocket chambers—past Mach 1 and break the sound barrier. On this project, Yeager worked with a team of scientists and engineers from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the predecessor to NASA. Yeager continued his career in the Air Force, commanding squadrons of fighter pilots and undertaking test pilot duties, and was promoted to General in 1968. Although he retired from the military in 1975, Mr. Yeager continued to consult for the Air Force and private companies while enjoying retired life. (Adapted from the Huntington Quarterly, 1998.)

DIVISION 2 JOHN NASH

John Nash was born in 1928, in Bluefield, West Virginia. He entered Bluefield College in 1941 where he studied mathematics and science. Mr. Nash won a scholarship in the George Westinghouse Competition and was accepted by the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in June 1945. His growing interest in mathematics led him to courses on tensor calculus and relativity. Mr. Nash received a B.A. and an M.A. in mathematics in 1948. In September that same year, Nash was accepted to Princeton University where he pursued a broad range of pure mathematics. Topology, algebraic geometry, game theory, and logic were among his interests. Rather than following conventional learning methods, such as lectures and books, Mr. Nash took his own approach and developed topics himself. In many ways, this approach was successful because it led him to become one of the most original mathematicians, known for attacking problems in novel ways. In 1949, while studying for his doctorate, Nash established the mathematical principles of game theory. During this period, he wrote a paper that, 45 years later, received great recognition: in 1994, Mr. Nash was awarded (jointly with Harsanyi and Selten) the Nobel Prize in economic science for his work on game theory. In addition, he was warded the Leroy P. Steele Prize by the American Mathematical Society in 1999.

DIVISION 3 DR. KIMBERLY WEAVER

Dr. Kimberly A. Weaver is an award-winning American astrophysics astronomer and professor and an expert in x-ray astronomy. Dr. Weaver was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1964. She attended West Virginia University and completed a B.S. degree in physics in 1987. The following year, she enrolled at the University of Maryland and graduated in 1990 with an M.S. in astronomy. In 1993, she received her Ph.D. in astronomy from University of Maryland at College Park. Her doctoral thesis was in complex broadband x-ray spectra of Seyfert Galaxies. Dr. Weaver then went to Goddard’s Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics in 1998, where she worked as a civil servant scientist. While there, she concentrated in x-ray astronomy, particularly on the Constellation X satellite project, which is part of NASA’s “Beyond Einstein” program. She also worked extensively with the Chandra x-ray telescope where many important observations were made with respect to starburst galaxies, black holes, and other astronomical phenomena. Dr. Weaver was part of the Spitzer space telescope team that discovered a massive asteroid belt around a mature, sun-like star named HD69830, which is 41 light years away. Currently, Dr. Weaver continues her work at NASA and is also an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

DIVISION 4 HOMER H. HICKAM, JR.

Homer H. Hickam, Jr. was born in 1943, and raised in Coalwood, West Virginia. He graduated from Big Creek High School in 1960 and from Virginia Tech in 1964 with a B.S. in industrial engineering. Mr. Hickam served as a First Lieutenant in the Fourth Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1967–1968 where he won the Army Commendation and Bronze Star medals. After 6 years on active duty, Hickam left the service with the rank of Captain.

After his return from Vietnam, Hickam turned to writing. His books include Rocket Boys (re-titled October Sky), Torpedo Junction, Back to the Moon, The Coalwood Way, and many others. In 1981, he began employment with NASA as an aerospace engineer at Marshall Space Flight Center. During his NASA career, Mr. Hickam worked in spacecraft design and crew training. His specialties included training astronauts on science payloads, and extravehicular activities. He has also trained astronaut crews for many Spacelab and Space Shuttle missions, including the Hubble space telescope deployment mission, the first two Hubble repair missions, Spacelab-J (the first Japanese astronauts), and the Solar Max repair mission.
