Mark 1:29-39

Brief Reflection: Let us strive to proclaim the Gos-pel by our everyday words and actions. In the Gospel, we hear that the Good News of Jesus is spreading to many towns and villages. Jesus tells his disciples that he has come for the purpose of preaching and teaching. That is our purpose as well. Let us strive to spread the Gospel in our everyday lives.

World Day for Consecrated Life – February 4, 2018 Celebrate all those called to consecrated life! Pray for all the men and women religious serving in the Archdiocese of Portland.

Grade School FAITH FORMATION Parents: FEBRUARY 7TH is First Confession for 2nd year students preparing for First Holy Communion. Please come to Sacred Heart Church at 6:15 pm. We will be having 2 priests to hear First Con-fession: Fr. Chrispine and Msgr. Moys from St. Paul Parish in St. Paul. We need to have at least 1 parent or guardian accompany their child/children for this. Please help your children for the next few weeks to make a good examination of conscience and possibly write down some of the things they are sorry for. Also, help them practice their Act of Contrition. The children will natu-rally be nervous, but please support them and tell them the sacra-ment is all about them receiving the gift of God’s forgiving love. Questions or concerns? Please contact Nanette Kuga (Tues, Wed & Fri), Spanish: Arcelia Pelayo (Wed), Sr. Maria or Sr. Blanca at the

**You are invited to bring your previous years’ palms and place in a container marked “palms” within the vestibule. Holy blessed palms should be returned to nature. Blessed palms may be burned and returned to the earth or simply buried. Should you wish to dispose of it, you may bury it or burn it and spread the ashes outside. On Ash Wednesday we begin the Lenten season—our time to pay attention to our ongoing conversion. There is great and surprising hope in remembering “you are dust and to dust you shall return,” or “turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel,” for it reminds us that God is in charge. Ashes also symbolize grief, in this case, grief that we have sinned and caused division from God. When we approach God with due humility and repentance, we effectively in-vite God to live in us anew. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the previous year's palm Sunday Mass. *This year, “give up” something to help you grow in faith or charity. Brew your own coffee and donate the money saved. Purposely replace your anger toward fellow drivers with blessings. Give up a half hour of TV and replace it with reading Scripture. Set up a place in your home for family or household prayer during Lent. Pray together and bless one another as you move through Lent. Participate in Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl. It is important to remember that Ash Wednesday is a day of penitential prayer and fasting. Some faithful take the rest of the day off work and remain home. It is generally inappropriate to dine out, to shop, or to go about in public after receiving the ashes. Feasting is highly inappropriate. Small children, the elderly and sick are exempt from this fasting observance.
