Principal’s Message
It’s happening here at Riviera Beach Elementary School! Our
students outscored Anne Arundel County Students attending
the other 78 elementary schools on average in 7 out of 8 grade
level assessments. Every 9 weeks students from across the
county take an assessment to indicate how well each school is
doing mastering the county curriculum. Riviera Beach Ele-
mentary not only outscored the county average in almost every
assessment but specifically, on Math, RBES outperformed the
county in each grade level, grades 2-5. This would not be possi-
ble if it were not for the outstanding classroom teachers, dedi-
cated special education teachers, opportunities in the morning
for support and acceleration, and YOU, a supportive communi-
ty!
Our success will continue as we all maintain our commitment
to education. This requires each one of us to be
a HERO. Here Every Day Ready and On-
Time!
Attendance truly is everything! If you get to school, we can
teach you. It’s really that simple!
As you know there are many clubs and activities that are tak-
ing place before and after school. I can’t tell you how proud I
am of the staff who run these opportunities for our students
and of course, our students for taking advantage of time with
teachers. Whether providing extra help with our morning
groups, being enriched with Mr. G’s Enrichment Lab, taking
part in our Art Club, becoming environmentally savvy as a
member of our Green School with Mr. B and Mrs. Ludwig, or
maintaining their healthy lifestyle with Mrs. Vezina’s mara-
thon kids each Monday afternoon, there is something for eve-
ryone. It really is true that the staff here at RBES want to
educate the whole child and continue to place each student in
a position to be successful.
As we look forward and welcome Spring, I want to remind eve-
ryone of the importance of finding time at night to simply read
for 20 minutes and continue to master math facts. These two
simple strategies are perhaps the most important things you
can do at home.

EMERGENCY DRILLS
During each school year, various drills are conduct-
ed at every school to ensure that staff and students
are prepared in the event of an emergency. These
drills include monthly fire/evacuation drills.
In addition five drills with scenarios developed by
the school system’s Office of School Security and
based upon various possible emergency scenarios are
done each year. These include, but are not limited to:
evacuation for natural gas emergencies; shelter for
tornado and earthquake; shelter for outside hazardous
materials release; lockout for danger outside of the
school building, reverse evacuation back into the
school for students and staff outside; and lockdown
for a person with a weapon inside of the school.
These drills are discussed with staff prior to the
drill, evaluated once the drill is complete. In some
cases, the drills may be discussed with students be-
fore they take place.
School Security Cameras
Riviera Beach Elementary School is equipped with a
video camera system. It covers selected interior and exte-
rior public portions of the building and grounds. It is
NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during
emergency situations. During certain events, when the
safety or security of our students may be in question, au-
thorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or
fire emergency units may be given access to view images
projected on the camera system. If you have any ques-
tions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of
School Security at 410-222-5083.

Positive Behavior Interventions System
PBIS
RBES is a Positive Behavior Interventions Systems (PBIS)
school. PBIS is a research-based program in place at many
AACPS schools which teaches students appropriate social
behaviors and work habits and recognizes students who are
demonstrating these behaviors. Research shows that chil-
dren who receive adult attention for positive behaviors are
more likely to repeat those behaviors. At RBES, our core
values are expressed with the acronym P.R.I.D.E. and we
recognize students who are Positive, Respectful, Inquisi-
tive, Determined, and Engaged. Students are rewarded for
showing PRIDE with Sand Dollars or Class DoJo Points
which can be traded for incentives, such as special privileg-
es, events, or tangible items.
If you have any questions about the PBIS program, please
contact Ms. Lewis at 410-222-6469.

THE GIFT OF ATTENDANCE
The best gift you can give your child is a good edu-
cation. And the best place to get that education is in
school.
Building a habit of good attendance is your child’s
ticket to success in school and eventually on the job.
Every year absences spike in the weeks before and
after winter/holiday breaks. It’s time to break that cycle.
A few missed days here and there, even if they’re
excused absences can add up to lost time learning and puts
your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten
as it is in high school.
Make sure your child is in school every day, right
up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching and
our students will be learning.
Give your child the “GIFT of Attendance” and the
habit of good attendance.
NO PETS ALLOWED
For the safety of our student’s and
staff, please do not bring your pets on
school property. Although your pet
may be friendly and loving to your
family, it may not be to others.
Thank you for your cooperation in
this matter.

SCHOOL SECURITY/SAFETY
SIGN IN & SIGN OUT
Procedures
The safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel
County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us.
All public schools in Anne Arundel County have been uti-
lizing a system for checking in all visitors. The system is
called V soft by Raptor Ware. When you visit our school
for the first time, you will be asked to present a govern-
ment issued photo ID to a staff person in the school of-
fice. This care will be scanned and the following infor -
mation will be collected: your photo, your name, and your
date of birth. This information will be utilized to check
you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information
against sexual offender data bases throughout the country.
If your name appears on any of the lists or your refuse
to allow the use of your ID, you will not be allowed ac-
cess to the school. Our future visits to a school, in
which you have previously registered, you will only be
asked to show your ID as your name will be selected from
an existing list of previous visitors. You will also be asked
to sign out with the office upon leaving the school so
that we know you are no longer in the building. You
will be required to check into the system even if you are
only coming to school to pick up your child. The infor -
mation collected will not be shared outside of the school
and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance with this
security measure is appreciated.
Should you have any questions, please contact Doyle
Batten, Supervisor of School Security, 410-222-5083 or
Proper I.D. Required for Early Dismissal
Please note that if you pick your child up early (for any
reason) county and school policy requires that students be
released only to parents or individuals designated on the
school emergency card (e.g., relative, neighbor, friend, etc.)
Therefore, it is very impor tant for parents to have
up-to-date information on their child’s emergency card.
If you need to make changes to your child’s emergency
card, please stop by the office or send in a signed letter in-
dicating the revisions. Individuals picking up students early
will also need to display appropriate identification.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Morning Drop-Off Procedures To ensure the safety of our students and a smooth flow of
traffic in front of the school when dropping off children in
the morning, please make a right turn ONLY into the drive-
way and pull all the way to the end of the loop at Hobbit
Road or the DROP OFF SIGN. This will allow for more
children to disembark from cars onto the sidewalk and alle-
viate long lines of waiting cars.
IN ADDITION, Anne Arundel County Police Depar t-
ment has posted a NO LEFT TURN sign at the entrance to
the driveway look in front of the school. Cars approaching
from Riviera Drive will not be able to turn left into the
driveway in front of the school. Drivers may:
Drive past the driveway and turn around behind the
school in order to turn right into the front driveway.
Drop off students on Hobbit Road at the sidewalk
crosswalk. There will be staff on duty at 8:50 a.m. to
assist with arrival.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Check It Out… Go to www.mypaymentplus.com, where you can put
money on your child’s lunch account and monitor bal-
ances. Your student’s 6 digit ID number can be found
on their report card or you can call the school office.

Due to various food allergies with some of our chil-
dren, we will not be allowing cupcakes and/or other
edible treats to be shared with classmates in the cafete-
ria during lunch periods.
Attendance Reminder and Procedures
Children cannot learn if they are not in school. Regular
school attendance is essential for student achievement as
well as mandated by law. There are only three legal ex-
cused student absences:
1. Personal illness (fever or vomiting)
2. Death of an immediate family member
3. Court order
To alleviate receiving a phone call from the Connect-ED
calling system, please call the school office between 8:30
a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at 410-222-6469, to let us know that
your child will be absent from school. In addition,
when your child returns to school after an absence, please
send in a note explaining the absence. Include the
child’s first and last name and the date of the absence. If
a child is absent five or more days in a row, a doctor’s note
is required. Family vacations are not excused absences.
Thank you for your support in ensuring regular school
attendance.
