R To the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils

Since 2004 Molescroft Primary School has held a unique International Festival bringing together our Arts English and Geography Curriculum in a three week inspirational and motivational event for our pupils. In 2004 we toured Europe and in 2005 held an Ambassadors Reception with an intercontinental feast of activities. In 2006 we focussed on Brazil complete with Carnival. Since then we’ve explored India, China, Arabia, Southern Africa, Australia, The United Kingdom (for the Jubilee Year), Mexico, Russia, USA ,

Spain and last year Japan. This morning I was delighted to announce that this year we are focussing on The Nordic countries of Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. I must at this point pass on my grateful thanks to Miss Johns and Mr. Williams who have been inspiring the organising committee (D.I.E.D.R.E) since September to prepare for three weeks of cultural and artistic celebration. All classes will be looking at the full region but then Y1 to Y6 will investigate different countries as appropriate.

This will include considering different human and physical geographical regions.

Each year group will engage in a major art project some of which will feature on the International Evening. These include a Sami Herdsman and Reindeer to be made as always in Year 4 by the children with James Sutton who will be making his annual visit. I know those in Year 5 & 6 have thoroughly enjoyed their work with him in the past and those in younger years will get their turn in years to come.

More on THE NORDIC LANDS Continued from page 1. All children will get the chance to focus on specific arts and cultural aspects including the following:All children will learn the Swedish Frog Song and dance ready for the International Festival Evening.

There will be a Geography Workshop for every year group led by Miss Johns and Mr. Williams.May Pole dancing is important in Sweden and Denmark and we shall therefore be dusting down the pole and all will be enjoying their chance to participate.

Each class will enjoy a cultural experience with special Scandinavian guests.

Each class will have a Cooking Experience making their own Danish Pastries.

Each class will have half a day in a glorious Sami Tipi which will be set up for over a week. Here they will be engaged in inspirational writing activities.

Each class will have Swedish Lessons.

As always culturally linked art projects will provide a major focus. They are as follows:FY:Edvard Munch ‘The Scream’Year 1: Thomas Danbo: Recycled ArtYear 2: Clay work based on Cultural Symbols Year 3: Thomas Danbo Sculpture in Withie and cardboard of mythical creatures Year 4: James Sutton Sculpture in Modroc Reindeer and Sami Herder.Year 5: Digital Art – Sanna AnnukkaYear 6: Large withie work, Norse Mythical Creatures

Lunchtimes are to be enhanced with new Nordic games of Boules, Ina Bandit and Kubb

As always everyone is invited to the celebrated International Evening. on Thursday 8th February 2018. This will commence on the South

Playground. at 5:30pm. There will be a Nordic Mythology Presentation with mystical creatures and trolls provided by Y3 and Y6 and with recorded passages by Year 5. This will be followed by the celebrated and extremely bizarre Swedish Frog Dance which EVERYONE will participate in.

Highlights of the Festival Evening include:• Traditional Games• Free Danish Pastries• The Sami People of Finland and

a special Journey to Lapland to meet our most special guest Father Christmas. He has very kindly agreed to suspend his holiday and bring his reindeer with him. It will be a nice opportunity for the children to thank him for their Christmas presents.

• A Eurovision Experience including Face Painting. Eurovision is absolutely massive in Sweden, but can you spot a winner?

• Experience “Hygge”• Name the Fish!• Lego Building with prizes.• Viking/Runic Writing• Recreating art in the style of

Edvard Munch using iPads• A Volcanic eruption every 15 mins• A chance to create your own

name plate in your “REAL” Icelandic name.

• Hans Christian Anderson experience with authentic snacks and drinks Kvikk Lunsj Chocolate Bars & Cocio Chocolate Milk.

• Æbleskiver Danish Pancake Balls will be available from the Pupil Kitchen.

• Northern Lights Experience.• In addition there will be a family

bar in the Tipi serving Glögg in both alcoholic and non alcoholic variants.

The hall is to be set up with the sculptures made by Year 3 and Year 6 and families can tour at leisure and experience the Nordic Myths as created by Year 5 set to music.

Each child will bring home a passport. This gives the information about the different options and activities available in all of our classrooms. I am grateful to Mr. Williams and Miss Johns who have once again taken the lead on the creation of the passport. It probably isn’t possible for everyone to visit everything so families will want to mark off favourites in advance. The activities in the passport are designed to appeal to a wide age range and are particularly created with the family in mind. It is expected that families will want to participate together.

The passport gives parents the information they require to support younger children, who will not be able to read the text themselves.

In addition on the Festival Night itself, our school kitchen will be offering Frikadeller Meatballs, Potato Salad and Spinach (there will be a vegetarian option) served from the Friends Garden, just £3 per meal.

YOUR HELP Parental contribution requested. As parents know, these events are not cheap to organise and are significantly subsidised. In these days of restricted school budgets the fact that we are still able to put together this package is quite remarkable and of course is only possible because of the support of parents. I once again appeal to parents to contribute £6 per child to the event. The requested contribution is maintained at £6 which is only £1 more than the cost in 2007! However I must plead with parents to support this and realise the value of the programme. There is a form at the end of this newsletter and sent home as a hard copy.

You may recall that last year I wrote to parents because a significant minority had not contributed. Thankfully this prompted a big response financially and emotionally. So many parents contacted

me to express their gratitude in the fact that the school prepares these events and hoping that we would continue to do so.

I also was made aware of a misunderstanding of a few parents that in these three weeks we abandon the Curriculum including Maths and English. I can assure all parents that this is absolutely not the case. We contract the curriculum in terms of hours per curriculum units. English and maths continue regardless, but of course the inspiration of such events must not be underestimated. What we do is emphasise some of the other subjects, but using the hours we have contracted to them. So there will be a lot of art and geography and probably little science in these weeks, but after half term the balance is redressed. There are no two weeks alike at Molescroft Primary School, this is why our pupils are so engaged and enjoy their education.

Remember the funding helps to pay for the specialist support, special projects, Tipi, and the

flightpath for the reindeer from Lapland. I am sure that the children are going to have a thrilling time and will enjoy sharing with you the sights, sounds and colour of the lands of the Midnight Sun with you on the evening of Thursday 8th February 2018.

In addition on Friday 9th February, following the International Evening the menu in school at Crofty’s Restaurant will be baked fish followed by Marzipan ring.

WHO IS HOMING IN ON WHAT

The children in the FY will maintain the focus across the entire region. Other year groups will go on to look at one region in detail.

R THE INTERNATIONAL NIGHT BEGINS WITH A MYSTICAL PRESENTATION Logistics for a great night. As indicated the International Evening will commence on the South Playground. at 5:30pm with a Nordic Mythology Presentation with mystical creatures and trolls provided by Y3 and Y6 and with recorded passages by Year 5.Parents are invited to gather on the South Playground with their children and wait for the magic to begin. Y3 and Y6 children are however asked to go to their classrooms ready to present their sculptures. Parents will be able to collect these children from their classrooms after the opening ceremony. We also request that, if possible parents/carers bring along the brightest torch they can find to shine to help create the atmosphere.

At 5:55pm the school will be open.

In order to facilitate your enjoyment of the evening and the safety of all, I ask that you take a few moments to consider the following:Movement around the building can be difficult when so many attend our International Nights. I ask therefore that wherever possible, visitors travel from room to room via the outside of the building. Every classroom has its own door to the outside. After the opening event on the South Playground or on arriving at school consider not coming to the front entrance, but rather enter through any other of the school’s 17 entrances. The South Playground pedestrian gates to the site will remain open all evening, however following a disruption from uninvited teenagers last year the North Gate will remain closed. This is to support security arrangements. Please do not bring buggies, prams or push chairs into school but use the outside routes. This is in the interest of everyone’s safety particularly to avoid a fire escape blockage. Please only use the internal routes to get to the Hall and catering options.

The Hall. After the opening ceremony, the hall is to be set up with the sculptures made by Year 3 and Year 6 and families can tour at leisure and experience the Nordic Myths as created by Year 5 set to music. There is therefore no need to have timed slots to enter the hall. Families can visit whenever they like. There will however still be a strict one way system into the hall and out through the Fire Exit. Catering will be in the Friends Garden access from the Library with a one way system.Staff are not looking after children and therefore children must be under the care of a responsible adult. This includes older moles up to the age of 15. Even older moles can attend alone!

ParkingWe all know that parking will be difficult, please be considerate of neighbours driveways.

Tired ChildrenIt is not expected that very young children are still here at 8pm unless of course they have the stamina!I sincerely hope you all have a most memorable evening. Thank you for your support and encouragement and patience particularly if it gets crowded in particular areas.

ONCE A MOLE!For any moles who are now at secondary school and would like to be involved, there is a role for them.We are looking for old Moles to attend dressed as a character from a Hans Christian Andersen Book. Please let Mrs. Trowsdale know if you are coming and as which character. If the character is not taken, you will be given a number to wear and you can move around freely, but through the passport children will be trying to spot you.A list of Anderson’s Stories is on page 11.

WHAT TO WEAR

This year we just want you to wrap up warm, with woolly jumpers, woolly hats and scarves.

Wear your thick coats, trousers and boots.

Together we will all look the part and will be ready for the weather whatever it throws at us. In fact we shall have the heating turned off in side the school so you will not be too warm in your winter clothing.

R SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANT The following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

Policy in Practice What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions. It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and

safety risk. This done, the Chair of Governors and the local radio stations will be informed. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....Parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may

take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be able to arrive before the normal start of school time. In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for day pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will contact Radio Humberside and Viking Radio to ask them to broadcast the information.

PARENTS WILL BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

School Meals are Excellent Value.Any Parent/Carer or Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10:00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo ID with you. Adult meals cost £3.40. A child’s meal costs £2.40. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.40 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office. Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option. Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies for the first five school days in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

Continuing our International Journey of culinary delights “Around the World on a Plate” we have some specials, which our children can look forward to. Two of these feature a journey down under with Australia Day on Friday 26th January 2018: Australian BBQ Style Snags and Fries (sausages in rolls) followed by Australian Lamington PuddingWe shall also be having a special menu linked to our international location on Friday 9th February 2018. Baked Fish followed by Marzipan ring.

Anyone wishing to know the details of any allergens in any of our meals provided can get the information from the school kitchen. Please telephone the normal school number 01482 861762 in order to be

transferred.
