We are already in the third quarter of the school year, there is only one quarter left to go! Next week our fourth grade students will be taking the FCAT Writing Test. I trust that our students have been working hard in their classrooms in preparation for this exam and are ready to do their best on the test. Our teachers have been working intensely with your children to ensure that he or she reaches academic success. This year the FCAT Reading, Math and Science testing for 3rd – 5th graders will take place in April. This is an important time of the school year and we want to encourage and remind our students that they should be reading at least 30 minutes each night. Research shows that students who read at least thirty minutes daily makes a profound impact on their academic achievement verses those students who do not. Parents, your support with this is greatly appreciated. I would like to congratulate our students who were recognized this month at the 2nd and 3rd quarter Honor Roll assemblies. Thank you to the parents who attended these assemblies, it was a pleasure to have you celebrate our students’ success with us. I encourage and challenge each and every one of our students to try your very best so that I can see you at the next Honor Roll Assembly receiving an award.

Black History Program

On February 16, we hosted our annual Black History Program. Students from Student Council, the Drum Team, Chorus, the Step Team, Glee Club and Safety Patrol Club teamed up to create an inspiring presentation of culture through the Arts. The theme of the program was “Honoring the Past Inspiring the Future”. The Drum Team began the evening with a powerful interlude of African Rhythms. Student Council and the Step Team reenacted the Lorraine Hansberry play “A Raisin in the Sun”. The reenactment included drama, poetry, dance and step. Chorus entertained us with their renditions of African-American Spirituals, folksongs and the African-American Civil Rights Anthem. The Glee Club gave a tribute to the late Michael Jackson performing some of his best-known songs such as “Blame It On the Boogie” and “Thriller”. It was an evening of enjoyment! Special thank you to all of the diligent students at Village Elementary who took part in this program. Thank you to all the Village Parents and Families for your support and dedication to all of the students at Village. To our dedicated club sponsors, thank you for all of your time and effort that went into this program, it was a great success!

Afterschool Tutoring

Afterschool Tutoring begins on Monday February 27, 2012 and ends on April 11, 2012. The purpose of this program is to provide extended day academic instruction to students. Tutoring will provide assistance to students in grades two through five. There will also be accommodations for siblings of those students being tutored. Tutoring will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2-4 p.m.

Pasta for Pennies This year our school supported the 18th-annual Pasta for Pennies Program presented by Olive Garden. Pasta for Pennies was the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School and Youth Program that took place over a three-week period during the school year and encouraged students to collect spare change to support the LLS’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. This program was a tremendous opportunity for children to help kids fighting cancer and to learn the importance of community service. During our program, students donated pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or more, to assist their class in their fundraising efforts. School-wide we collected approximately $2,900.00. At the end of the three-week period, the top fundraising class won an Olive Garden lunch (pasta party) for their class. Congratulations to Ms. Brown-Russell’s fourth grade class on winning the Olive Garden luncheon! We look forward to another year of extraordinary results thanks to the efforts of parents like you, your students, faculty, families and friends. Parents, it is important to conference with your child's teacher. A conference can keep you informed of your child's progress and identify any areas that may need any assistance. Box Tops For Education Thank you for bringing in Box Tops to your classrooms. Because of your contributions Village Elementary School received a check for $216 in January. Please continue to bring in Box Tops, again your contributions are greatly appreciated. School Spirit Students are to wear uniforms on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays but on Fridays, students can wear their Village Panther T-Shirts or their favorite outfit, as long as the District Dress Code is being followed (all shirts must have sleeves and no skin can be exposed; no “short-shorts”). Also they can dress according to the designated school spirit day. For example, one Friday was “Pink Day,” everyone wore pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students are required to wear their red uniform shirts or red Panther Shirts for field trips. At all times, students must wear closed-toed shoes with rubber bottoms and covered heals—no sandals or flip-flops.

Annual Customer Survey

The Broward County Public School's Eighteenth Annual Customer Survey of our District's students, instructional staff/teachers, and parents will be underway throughout all elementary, middle, and high schools. This year's surveys will be administered online to all students in grades 3 through 12, to all full-time instructional staff/teachers, and to all parents/guardians. Surveys will be administered online beginning February 6, 2012 through April 6, 2012. All surveys will be available online through Virtual Counselor at https://www.browardschools.com/virtualcounselor for all students, instructional staff/teachers, and parents who wish to participate. It is important for students, instructional staff/teachers, and parents/guardians to participate to ensure that valid conclusions can be drawn from the results. We appreciate the advice students, instructional staff/teachers, and parents/guardians give us each year and encourage everyone to take a few minutes to participate. Following administration, student, teacher, and parent data will be analyzed and summarized in individual school reports. Results for individual school reports will be released by June 8, 2012. A customer survey brief highlighting areas of concern, providing results for the District and for elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and centers will be released July 6, 2012. If you do not wish your child to take this survey, please contact the front office for an exemption form.

Head Start Information

Applications Being Accepted for 2012/13 Head Start/Early Head Start Programs The first application period for the Broward County Public Schools Head Start/Early Head Start Program is underway and will run through Friday, February 24, 2012. A second application period is scheduled for March 20 – April 5, 2012. Applications will be accepted at six locations throughout Broward County (See the attached schedule for location information and times). The District's Head Start Program serves three- and four-year-old children and offers a full day of educationally enriched activities focusing on the development of the whole child. Research proven curricula, and ongoing assessments are part of the daily developmentally appropriate activities offered in the classrooms. In addition, Head Start services include dental, health, nutrition, mental health and family support. The Early Head Start Program provides services to pregnant women, infants and toddlers. Families must meet the income eligibility requirements as determined by the Department of Health & Human Services 2012 Poverty Guidelines. Families of children with disabilities are encouraged to apply. To complete an application, parents or guardians must provide the following documentation at the time of registration: - Proof of age (child's original birth certificate or passport) - Child's Medicaid Card (if eligible) - Proof of guardianship (if applicable) - Parent photo identification - Proof of all household income for the past 12 months (income is defined as the total money earned or received before deductions for all family members) - Proof of residence/domicile in Broward County An application may be completed by the parent or legal guardian at any of the application sites.
