A 7 pc band and a full house... that one goes down as one of the best nights of music ever at the club! And guess what? Back by popular demand we going to try and repeat it again on Saturday March 14th so mark your calendar now and make plans to be there! The most important issue at our Club has been the declining membership. I have been working to revise it and we had a breakthrough on this issue this week. Many of you may remember seeing members of the FC Bayern Munich Fan Club come to our club once or twice a year. I have been asking them to join our club and move their Fan Club to our club. It’s a perfect fit as they’re all big German soccer fans. I am happy to announce their members are officially joining our club. We expect to gain up to 120 new members! The bierstube will be open at least twice a week on Saturday’s in the mornings or early afternoons (depending on game time) for them to cheer on the FC Bayern Munich soccer games. Every member of our club is encouraged to come join in on the fun. They’re very passionate soccer fans so it’s going to be fun in there! They are going to become very involved with everything we do starting with joining us this Saturday night for our dance and Stammtisch. This is a big win for both our club and theirs. Please stop in to the bierstube when they’re there and give them a great big welcome to our club. With this happening, along with the German Meetup Group using the bierstube 1-2 Saturdays a month, the bierstube will come alive again. There are all new drapes and shades on order for the bar to be installed within the next week or so. And Melissa Ems is working diligently with friends to give the front area a much needed makeover. This will be the biggest boost to our membership ever! Now I have a ton of events planned for February: 02/08: Our annual “Welcome Back, Eh!” for our Canadian Snow birds with the Nick Gualasy Band 02/15: Valentine’s Dance with Manni Daum 02/22: The Cologne Crazy Day Fasching Night & a special tribute German Police Officer Achim Dieterich . He is coming from Germany to do a benefit run from Vero Beach Florida to Clearwater to raise funds for the FOP Lodge 43’s Family Memorial/Survivors Fund. The run will take 4 days to cover the roughly 185 miles and will end on February 18th. The funds raised will be used to support the families of any area police officers that lose their life while on active duty. We, along with the Sheriff’s Dept of Pinellas Park, will hold a special ceremo ny to thank Officer Achim Dieterich for helping to raise funds for this very special cause. Make sure you come and meet this very special officer from Germany! You can read more about this Officer on page 3 of the newsletter. The band for the evening will be Pete and Edith. 02/29: The April Fools Dance with Eva Lastly, I know you’re all passionate about this club and want to share your thoughts with me, Joe and Cristina Young. We really do want to hear from you… but we respectfully ask that you please not do so on Saturday nights. If it cannot wait, yes, please tell us but you must understand we come to the club to have a good time just like you. We all prefer you let us know what’s on your mind with a phone call during the week or at the bimonthly membership meetings. There so many issues we need to take care of each night. It’s not a lot of fun if we are constantly interrupted with issues that we can better address over the phone. Thank you so much for your understanding. See you on the dance floor with the first lady, Jay

Hello Members and Friends, On January 11, 2020 the UGASF had its annual January meeting in Casselberry. The Heritage Day/Mai Fest was discussed. The Board members and the Delegates are quite certain that all is well to hold the event at the Hofbräu Haus. If all fails the event will take place at our club. The board is meeting again on Saturday February 8, 2020 at our club. The meeting starts at 10:30am. Lunch is requested. Will keep you posted in the next newsletter.

Your Delegate, Ilse

Hello Members and Friends, The month of January is so far is quite busy. At the membership meeting I was informed that Andy Spiess had passed at the end of No-vember. Then we found out that Gisela’s husband, Karl, also passed. Then there is Lilli, it’s hard for her to sit still, yet right now she has to, since she had foot surgery. After the operation she will feel a lot bet-ter again and can maneuver the way she is used to. I spoke with Anneliese Wehry who will not be coming to the club for a while due to medical issues. We are wishing you the best! I have spoken with Haydee, Herbert Kainath’s wife. She has been away taking care of family business. I hope and believe that the rest of the members are in good health. Our deepest sympathies go to Helen, Haydee and Gisela and well wishes to Lilli and Anneliese.

Sunshine Lady Report

We recently received a lovely thank you note from a guest to the club:

“What you do makes a big difference! I live up in Brooksville about 2 hours away. Last Saturday, I drove down to get Jagerschnitzel (one of my very favorites). One of the ladies there was so friendly—she took my order and while I was waiting for the food she made a special effort to get me to dance and have fun. I got to see the new Princess (her mom?) and the new Prince. What a great tradition. I really had a great time—if only for the few minutes that I was there. It gave me a break from so many other responsibility that I have. You can’t know how much it meant. If I remember, I think the lady I met was Linda and her mom “Erna” or “Irna” is the new Princess.

I just wanted to let you know how very much I appreciate your kindness.”

Thank you to the members, volunteers, Board and all those who give of their time, talents and treasures to make a difference in people’s lives!

Welcome Wagon: FC Bayern Munich Official Fan Club of St. Petersburg

On Saturday, February 22nd we will hold a special event to honor German police officer Achim Dieterich. Achim will be running in support of the charity fund established to assist the families of fallen officers.

Officer Achim Dieterich Although I am a police officer in Germany, the fraternity of law enforcement officers knows no international boundaries. Coming to America and running to raise money for the families of American fallen law enforcement officers would be an honor like no

other. No matter where you are in the world, law enforcement officers put our lives on the line every time we go to work. Our job is to protect and serve the public, sometimes paying the ultimate sacrifice in doing so. The officers that give their lives in public service have husbands, wives, and children at home who loved them and depended on them. This is when those families directly need our support, and one of the missions of the Fraternal Order of Police is to be there for those families in their darkest hour. With the goal of raising funds for these grieving families, I am running from Vero Beach to Clearwater Florida for Law Enforcement Survivors. My goal is to collect pledges from

the community and businesses for every mile I run. These funds will be directly used to help the families of our fallen heroes. I will be doing this run for my American brothers and sisters knowing they would be there for my family too if I were to pay the ultimate sacrifice.

Biography

Ludwigsburg, South Germany Age: 49 Married, two children Commissioner of the Police Department Ludwigsburg (South-Germany) Instructor of police students Running and Aqua-Fitness Coach Passionate Ultrarunner While visiting the USA Officer Dieterich learned of the all too common loss of police officers lives in the USA do to violence. As he learned about this he asked about how the families of the fallen were cared for and upon learning that support was limited he stated that he wanted to find a way to help. As Officer Dieterich is Ultra Marathoner an idea was born in that he would run across Florida and any donations made in support of the run would go to the Survivors Fund to help the families of any officer that falls in the Tampa Bay area.

History of the Fraternal Order of Police In 1915, the life of a policeman was bleak. In many communities they were forced to work 12 hour days, 365 days a year. Police officers didn't like it, but there was little they could do to change their working conditions. There were no organizations to make their voices heard; no other means to make their grievances known. This soon changed, thanks to the courage and wisdom of two Pittsburgh patrol officers. Martin Toole and Delbert Nagle knew they must first organize police officers, like other labor interests, if they were to be successful in making life better for themselves and their fellow police officers. They and 21 others "who were willing to take a chance" met on May 14, 1915, and held the first meeting of the Fraternal Order of Police. They formed Fort Pitt Lodge #1. They decided on this name due to the anti-union sentiment of the time. However, there was no mistaking their intentions. As they told their city mayor, Joe Armstrong, the FOP would be the means "to bring our aggrievances before the Mayor or Council and have many things adjusted that we are unable to present in any other way...we could get many things through our legislature that our Council will not, or cannot give us." And so it began, a tradition of police officers representing police officers. The Fraternal Order of Police was given life by two dedicated police officers determined to better their profession and those who choose to protect and serve our communities, our states, and our country. It was not long afterward that Mayor Armstrong was congratulating the Fraternal Order of Police for their "strong influence in the legislatures in various states,...their considerate and charitable efforts" on behalf of the officers in need and for the FOP's "efforts at increasing the public confidence toward the police to the benefit of the peace, as well as the public." From that small beginning the Fraternal Order of Police began growing steadily. In 1955, the idea of a National Organization of Police Officers came about. Today, the tradition that was first envisioned 89 years ago lives on with more than 2,100 local lodges and more than 310,000 members in the United States. The Fraternal Order of Police has become the largest professional police organization in the country. The FOP continues to grow because we have been true to the tradition and continued to build on it. The Fraternal Order of Police are proud professionals working on behalf of law enforcement officers from all ranks and levels of government.

Pinellas Lodge 43

Pinellas Lodge 43 was formed on March 1, 1966 by a group of local municipal police officers. Since its inception, our lodge has provided for the support of its members through its fraternal association with the State and National Lodge and the enduring support of our members. Throughout the past 53 years our lodge has continued to evolve and adjust with the times, some of which have been good and others that have been challenging.

Pinellas Lodge 43 is located in the heart of Largo, Florida where we own our newly renovated administrative office, meeting hall and members lounge. Our 750 plus members represent over a dozen federal, state and local agencies. Our lodge provides a full array of legal and labor support, as well as assistance for unexpected emergencies and to civic and sports groups thorough our local communities.

Among the many issues that Lodge 43 works with is ensuring that the family of any officer that may fall while in the line of duty is taken care of with immediate fiscal assistance as many officers are the sole income providers for their family. This support comes from the Lodge 43 Survivors Fund.

International Police Association

The International Police Association is a worldwide fraternal police organization whose members are active and retired law enforcement personnel from around the world. The IPA exists to promote global and cultural friendship among peace officers. It is not associated with any labor organization or investigative body with law enforcement powers. There are six separate IPA Regions within the State of Florida. Pinellas County, along with much of the west coast of Florida falls within IPA Region 19. One of the purposes of the IPA is to encourage friendship between police officers from around the globe. This is done in many way but the strongest contact is made when a traveling police officer or retired police officer reaches out to a member of the IPA in the area in which he is traveling. The local officer will host the visiting officer, offer assistance if needed, etc. It was through the IPA that a German Police Officer visiting Pinellas County, Officer Achim Dieterich, a police officer in Ludwigsburg South Germany, met with the members of FOP 43 and a fraternal relationship began.

Love Lock Bridge: Cologne, Germany

Hohernzollern Bridge or more commonly known as Love Lock Bridge, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Not so long ago, padlocks became the symbol of love. Lovers have attached them to bridges, gates, fences and similar public places. Often, the names or initials of the lovers are engraved and the key gets thrown away in order to demonstrate the indestructibility of the love between them.

The keys of the love-locks attached to the Cologne Hohenzollern Bridge are thrown into the river Rhine below. The Rhine, which traverses Germany, has seen millions of loving couples but keeps their secrets in its watery depths.

The custom to attach padlocks to the Cologne Love Lock Bridge - or Love Bridge, for short – began in the late summer of 2008. Since then, the number of locks has increased momentously. In 2011, 40,000 padlocks were counted, but today the number is likely to be 8 times higher.

The bridge consists of 340 railing sections, which are similar to chain link fences and thus, provide an I deal space to attach padlocks. Each section has between 800 and 1,200 love-locks attached to it. Therefore, a good estimate might be 340,000 padlocks in total.

Along the southern footpath, free spaces can only be found in the last third of the bridge opposite the Cologne Cathedral. However, the northern footpath still offers lots of space for eternal love.
