FEBRUARY PROGRAM: ThE UnknOwn VAlUE OF GEOTEchnicAl EnGinEERsVictor R. Donald, Terracon

The geotechnical engineer routinely works with the structural engineer, civil engineer and architect to render a viable approach to design and construction of a myriad of projects ranging from simple to complex. The geotechnical engineer should serve as an integral part of the design and construction team in such a manner to guide the decisions that impact the site preparation and foundations aspects of the work. Far too often the geotechnical engineer merely delivers a report of site conditions along with suggestions for design and construction, leaving the civil and structural engineers with the task of determining the final design. Also, as the project moves into construction, the geotechnical engineer’s involvement may be coincidental, if at all.

This presentation seeks to point out the need for maintaining the involvement of the geotechnical engineer as an Engineer of Record, utilizing their experience and state-of-the-practice knowledge to develop specialty foundation designs, minimize the unknowns that are inherent in the geotechnical practice, and allowing the other professionals an excellent resource for those aspects of construction that are unique to the geo-profession.

The topic will be presented by Mr. Vic Donald. He currently serves as chair of ASCE’s Geo-Institute Task Force dedicated to enhancing the professionalism of the geotechnical engineer. The G-I is working with other professional organizations to increase the awareness of this critical aspect of the geo-professional’s role, and he will be able to bring us all up to speed on the current state of this initiative forged by this prestigious committed of the ASCE.

Brief intro Bio on Victor R. DonaldMr. Donald received his BS and MS from LSU in Civil Engineering and has over 30 years of experience as a practicing geotechnical engineer throughout the southeast. He currently serves as the National Service Line Director for Terracon’s Geotechnical Service Line. In this responsibility, he works with over 1,000 geotechnical and construction monitoring practitioners across the country. This experience has taught him a lot about the “art” of the profession as well as the science, and he will be sharing the benefit of this experience in the area with the group.

The Fort Worth Post is started off 2012 a little different than the usual technical presentation speakers. During January’s meeting we looked at the value that the Fort Worth SAME Post adds to your company and your career and your professional development. We will heard from Lieutenant Colonel Bob Morris of the US Army Corps of Engineers and Colonel (ret.) Charlie Hart of the GSA, both active members of our Post. They discussed their personal involvement in SAME and the impacts they have seen from their participation in the organization. Then, they gave insight into their respective organization’s goals for involvement. Colonel Morris and Colonel Hart will provided specific examples of large and small businesses that have benefited from their participation in SAME, as it relates to doing business with USACE and GSA.

Finally, they provided valuable tips designed to assist the audience in its quest to do business with USACE and GSA in the New Year. This program was advantageous for large and small businesses as well as public sector and individual members because it will provide unique perspectives from two federal government decision makers who have been active in SAME for many years. In light of the economy and tight budgets, January’s program highlighted what businesses can expect to see at these two entities in 2012 and illustrated how individuals and firms can use their involvement in the Fort Worth Post to their advantage.

Albert Garza, Director of the Regional Office of Small Business Utilization (ROSBU) in the Greater Southwest Region, was also at the meeting and was available to answer questions after the conclusion of the meeting.

CMJ Engineering, Inc. (CMJ) is a registered small business (CCR) recognized as an industry leader in providing geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing in North Central Texas. CMJ provides a specialty engineering consulting service focusing on soils and geology, foundation engineering, and related geotechnical and geological engineering. 2. Minutes of the 2 December 2011 Board meeting were approved.3. The treasurer report indicates a balance of $10,150.13 in the checking account

and $17,152.06 in a savings account. Total operating assets for the Post $27,327.21. The Raymond Losornio Memorial Scholarship Fund inviolate principal is $87,000.00. The Education and Mentoring Account has been invested with a balance of $105,868.85. The total Post Education and Mentoring Assets at the end of November were $141,573.30. The Edward Jones Education and Mentoring account has been opened in the amount of $245,000.00.

4. Individual membership is 707 with 279 members not included in our 115 Sustaining Firm membership. We currently have 56 Young Members.
