FEBRUARY PROGRAM: ThE UnknOwn VAlUE OF GEOTEchnicAl EnGinEERsVictor R. Donald, Terracon

The geotechnical engineer routinely works with the structural engineer, civil engineer and architect to render a viable approach to design and construction of a myriad of projects ranging from simple to complex. The geotechnical engineer should serve as an integral part of the design and construction team in such a manner to guide the decisions that impact the site preparation and foundations aspects of the work. Far too often the geotechnical engineer merely delivers a report of site conditions along with suggestions for design and construction, leaving the civil and structural engineers with the task of determining the final design. Also, as the project moves into construction, the geotechnical engineer’s involvement may be coincidental, if at all.

This presentation seeks to point out the need for maintaining the involvement of the geotechnical engineer as an Engineer of Record, utilizing their experience and state-of-the-practice knowledge to develop specialty foundation designs, minimize the unknowns that are inherent in the geotechnical practice, and allowing the other professionals an excellent resource for those aspects of construction that are unique to the geo-profession.

The topic will be presented by Mr. Vic Donald. He currently serves as chair of ASCE’s Geo-Institute Task Force dedicated to enhancing the professionalism of the geotechnical engineer. The G-I is working with other professional organizations to increase the awareness of this critical aspect of the geo-professional’s role, and he will be able to bring us all up to speed on the current state of this initiative forged by this prestigious committed of the ASCE.

JAnUARY PROGRAM: ThE FORT wORTh POsT VAlUE:how Getting involved helps Your Business and Your Professional Development

what Does the corps of Engineers and GsA say?

January 3, 2012

The Fort Worth Post is started off 2012 a little different than the usual technical presentation speakers. During January’s meeting we looked at the value that the Fort Worth SAME Post adds to your company and your career and your professional development. We will heard from Lieutenant Colonel Bob Morris of the US Army Corps of Engineers and Colonel (ret.) Charlie Hart of the GSA, both active members of our Post. They discussed their personal involvement in SAME and the impacts they have seen from their participation in the organization. Then, they gave insight into their respective organization’s goals for involvement. Colonel Morris and Colonel Hart will provided specific examples of large and small businesses that have benefited from their participation in SAME, as it relates to doing business with USACE and GSA.

Finally, they provided valuable tips designed to assist the audience in its quest to do business with USACE and GSA in the New Year. This program was advantageous for large and small businesses as well as public sector and individual members because it will provide unique perspectives from two federal government decision makers who have been active in SAME for many years. In light of the economy and tight budgets, January’s program highlighted what businesses can expect to see at these two entities in 2012 and illustrated how individuals and firms can use their involvement in the Fort Worth Post to their advantage.

Albert Garza, Director of the Regional Office of Small Business Utilization (ROSBU) in the Greater Southwest Region, was also at the meeting and was available to answer questions after the conclusion of the meeting.

Alliance Geotechnical Group was established in 1999 and is now one of the largest minority employee owned firm in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex that provides professional services in the areas of:

• Geotechnical Engineering and Drilling• Geotechnical Laboratory Testing• Construction Materials Engineering• Construction Materials Testing and Quality Control• Environmental Consulting• Forensic Studies• Value Engineering• Geotechnical/Environmental/Drilling

Alliance Geotechnical Group’s basic philosophy of excellence and quality in project delivery and client service is undergirded by its management ownership and employee ownership structure. AGG is employee owned. What does this mean to clients? It means that AGG is able to attract and keep the best employees - individuals who are true partners with a vested interest in the outcome of every project. Through this approach, client service moves beyond a business philosophy and becomes the basis of business practice.

Drawing from the collective experience of principals and senior staff, AGG offers a background of service, dating back to 1975, to a broad client base in both the public and private sectors. Client groups include:

• State and local government agencies• Developers• Architects• Civil Engineers• General Contractors

Accreditation and Certifications: The AGG fully accredited laboratory is certified by AASHTO (R18) in concrete, soil, aggregate, and asphalt, meeting the requirements for ASTM E329. AGG’s lab is also certified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. AGG is an active participant in TxDOT, CCRL, and AASHTO Proficiency Sample Programs. AGG is a member of the ACIL and TCEL.

AGG’s technicians are certified by the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technologies (NICET), and the TxDOT Hot Mix Asphalt Center. AGG structural steel inspectors are certified by the American Welding Society (AWS), as well as by the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). AGG technicians also hold PTI Certification for Post Tension Concrete Structures and PCI Certification for Pre-Cast and Prestressed Concrete Structures. AGG offers special inspectors certified by the ICBO for reinforced concrete and structural masonry - UBC-97 and IBC-2000.

The keystone of AGG’s practice is its well-developed QA/QC Program. Under the direction of AGG’s Quality Control/Quality Assurance Manager, program procedures are monitored on an ongoing basis and all equipment is subjected to stringent inspection regularly.

Established in 1997, Cyntergy AEC is an architecture and engineering firm based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cyntergy’s staff is composed of architects, all engineering disciplines (civil, structural, mechanical and electrical) and construction management professionals. Cyntergy’s staff provides a unique approach to solving design challenges, and the ability of its teams to cohesively analyze those challenges allows the firm to provide optimum coordination in design solutions. This approach to a project or contract, which incorporates architecture and engineering into a unified team, allows Cyntergy to constantly view the project from multiple angles throughout the design process. This enables us to resolve conflicts and inconsistencies during the design phases, instead of during construction, thus limiting costly change orders.

In the past few years, Cyntergy has been awarded a large number of Air Force and Army installation IDIQ multiple task order projects, whether through a base design IDIQ, POCA, JOC or MATOC contract. This experience has resulted in Cyntergy’s staff being experienced in virtually every project type the military requires. With in-house, multiple discipline engineering and architecture groups, combined with a construction administration group, these experienced teams have mobilized and performed under tough schedules, demanding weather, and many other complicating factors, including having to coordinate multiple project task orders on base at the same time. Cyntergy thrives on this type of work and prides itself on the ability to scope any type of military project quickly and professionally.
