Judging a Car that Achieved the Duntov Award 24 Years Ago

Fred Jenkins, Chapter Judging Chair

First of all, I want to thank Harold and Janet Kennedy for hosting this last judging school for 2016. Everything that we needed to make this a fun and educational day was provided by the Kennedys. Tables and chairs were already set up and coffee and donuts were waiting for us. A hot catered lunch was set up around noon with home-style cooking from a local restaurant: fried chicken, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, banana pudding and lots more. All at no cost to the chapter, complimentary from Harold and Janet. Thanks.

We used Harold’s 1964 coupe that had achieved the Duntov Mark-of-Excellence Award in 1992. I don’t think that Harold would have had to do much to get it ready for final Duntov flight judging once again. Twenty-four years later we still use the judging matrix of originality and condition but today we are more consistent with judging scores with the use of CDCIF, standard deducts where applicable and our condition-percentage deduction method. Today this car was judged as it is by five two-person judging teams. And yes, we even did an operations check.

Judging began and everyone wanted to be on the car. Not easy with four teams on at once, but they all worked around each other. Finally, I got a section to review before giving the sheets to the tabulation ladies. Around 12:15 the interior, exterior, mechanical and chassis teams had concluded. Time now for that hot lunch. Janet said that it was going to be good. It was too good; I think everyone had seconds and still lots left over.

After lunch the operations team did its checks for functionality. Harold only had to prime the windshield washer. Everything else worked as expected except the radio--this is a radio-delete car. Too cool. Although this was an unofficial judging using sample judging sheets, we went through the complete process of applying CDCIF and standard deductions. It was an excellent assessment by all the teams, and twenty-four years after gaining the Duntov Award, the car scored a 98.0.

Thanks to Jimmy Gregg, Harold and Janet Kennedy, Ray Culbertson, Dave and Mary Barrett, Alan Beaver, Charlie Mitchell, Louis Kolb, Evelyn Griggs, Gary Jaynes, Bob Kinstrey, Brian McIntyre, Valeria Hutchinson and Klee Wilson.

Before judging began, Fred invited Harold to share his history with this car and how he had campaigned it through NCRS to achieve the Duntov Award. Like most car owners, he was more than willing to do that. Jimmy Gregg, Brian McIntyre and I also shared a little history on our journeys with Mark-of-Excellence award cars.

On chilly but otherwise pleasant December 17, twelve families of the CCNCRS gathered for the annual Christmas party/charity event at the beautiful new residence of Valeria Hutchinson and Klee Wilson in Rock Hill. There was not a Corvette to be seen outside of Trixie and Bella who were tucked into the garage.

Membership Report Janet Kennedy Membership Manager

Happy holidays to every CCNCRS member. It’s been a whirlwind of activity at home getting ready for the holidays, but it’s my favorite time of year so I guess, I’ll be joining the rat race. I hope each of you had a wonderful holiday spent with the family and friends you love. I cannot thank the membership enough for answering my call to action in renewing your dues. The response to my emails has been overwhelming. Members have been renewing online and via the mail. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I recently sent out a membership roster via the NCRS website. If you see any changes in your information that need to be made, please let me know. You also need to update with the National office as that information comes directly from it. If you didn’t receive this roster, let me know that as well and I will be happy to send you one. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

CCNCRS BOD Meeting Gray Court, SC

November 19, 2016

Meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by Chairperson Valeria Hutchinson. A quorum was established.

The following members of the chapter’s BOD were in attendance:

Valeria Hutchinson Alan Beaver Fred Jenkins Janet Kennedy Bob Kinstrey Dave Barrett Louis Kolb Mary Barrett

Chapter members in attendance were

Ray Culbertson Harold Kennedy Jimmy Gregg Charles Mitchell Evelyn Griggs Brian McIntyre Gary Jaynes Klee Wilson

This was an abbreviated BOD meeting called primarily to set event dates for the spring of 2017.

Valeria presented Gary Jaynes his charter member certificate as he had not attended the anniversary picnic or the annual business meeting where the certificates were handed out.

Louis reported on his investigation into the use of a Visa card to pay chapter dues. Visa requires a background check for the responsible person. Even though it is for a group, an individual is required to be the responsible party. This individual could be the chairman, but every time the chair changed, another background check would be required.

After some discussion, a motion was made to not pursue qualifications required for use of a Visa card. Motion was seconded and approved. If chapter members wish to pay their chapter dues with a credit card, they may do so via the National NCRS website.

The charitable-giving committee circulated a form for the membership to select the organizations that would be the 2017 recipients of the chapter’s donations. All members will be solicited for their opinion.

There was some discussion about QuickBooks. Invoice generation is poor and not of the quality desired. It is difficult to generate member lists of the quality and formats desired. It was decided that the membership chairman and treasurer would be allowed to use whatever method they decide is best to generate member lists and invoices. It was decided there ought to be instructions in QuickBooks use prior to the next BOD meeting.

Financial Report: Louis updated the BOD on the chapter’s financials. The Lake Lure fall meet resulted in a loss of $1,171.76 and the driving-skills workshop had a loss of $128.62.

Cash on hand Jan. 1, 2016 $12,987.78

Total Income $8,904.00

Total Expenses $9,655.60

Cash on hand Nov. 16 $11,411.18

The lone 1983 Corvette received its permanent dedicated display in January 2015.

How A New Pair of Cowboy Boots Saved the Last 1983 Corvette

Sean Szymkowski GM Authority website Oct. 23, 2016

The C4 Corvette was poised to be a major milestone in Corvette history. It was to be all new from the ground up and encompass the latest cutting-edge technologies to make the car a world beater in a changing global market. But safety and fuel economy regulations took hold of development procedures. Designers and engineers were challenged to create appealing products while satisfying newfound regulations. And throughout the development phase, it became apparent that the new vehicle would not be ready for its launch in late 1982.

So the Corvette development team made the hard decision to forfeit the entire 1983 model year in order to focus on fixing problems and shortcomings that were found in test cars. This also meant that Corvette would not celebrate its 30th anniversary with a special model.

Forty-four 1983 test cars had been assembled at the Bowling Green plant, and all were ordered to be crushed and disposed of locally with upper management bringing a crusher on site. However, when the time came to crush all 1983 Corvettes, a pair of cowboy boots saved one car’s life.

Ralph Montileone, quality manager at the Bowling Green plant in 1983, was responsible for insuring that each car was destroyed and disposed of. However, the day the crusher arrived, it began to storm. Montileone recalls looking down at his brand new cowboy boots. With mud and puddles awash outside, he decided dirtying his new kicks was not an option; he would move the final 1983 Corvette to the crusher the next day.

But the crusher departed overnight. When he returned the next day, the only remaining 1983 Corvette sat there with no way to dispose of it. So he pulled it around back of the assembly plant, and there it sat and would continue to sit for years.

Paul Schnoes was transferred to the Bowling Green assembly as manager in 1984. Sometime later he saw the car outside and asked why a Corvette was sitting covered in back of the factory. When he received the answer, he realized it was truly something special. Sometime later, the Bowling Green plant obtained ownership of the car from General Motors, and it went on display for visitors at the plant.

When the National Corvette Museum became a reality, it was moved across the street to the museum. For years it was moved around as part of displays in a line of other Corvettes. A grant in memory of two Corvette owners and fans provided a permanent location of this special model. The only surviving 1983 Corvette will reside in its permanent home at the National Corvette Museum all thanks to a spiffy new pair of boots.

Impact of Vintage-Air Installation on Flight Judging

Bob Kinstrey #58155

The NCRS Judging Reference Manual, 8th

Edition, Section 4, item 9, Added or Deleted Options states: “The detectable addition OR deletion of any production vehicle option subsequent to factory assembly is inconsistent with NCRS Judging Standards and therefore subject to full deductions on originality and condition. Examples: power top, windshield wipers, power windows, power steering, power brakes, side mounted exhausts.”

The rules have not changed; however, judging guidelines as they are applied against the installation of a Vintage Air Gen IV air conditioning system have changed. The standard was clarified at a judging retreat in Ft. Worth in 2013 and now installation of a Vintage Air System is deemed to be a significant modification to a Corvette. Also remember that in order to get any condition points, an item must receive at least 10% of the originality points, e.g. no originality points equals no condition points.

Based on my experience with Flight Judging of a 1966 coupe, items that will impact the flight judging score and potential points lost are shown in the tables below:

Note: O is for originality and C is for condition

Engine Cooling – Fan An additional electric fan is installed behind the radiator as is the AC cooling coils and condenser. These should be considered part of the Vintage Air system which receives a full deduction under mechanical, section 17, and no additional points should be deducted here.

Deduction for Chassis – 0 points

Total deductions shown in the tables above are 132 and when divided by 45, the percentage of points lost from 100 is 2.9. The minimum score for Top Flight is 94, thus the Vintage Air A/C installation effects about 48% of the available points that can be lost and still obtain a Top Flight Award.

Since the car is being judged as modifications to a non-A/C car, items that were part of the factory air-conditioning installation, such as full tinted glass, air-conditioner vents (interior, dash panel area), A/C decals, etc. should be judged as for a non-A/C car.

It is probably true that because the Vintage Air was installed in the car, the car is used, e.g. a driver. Driving to a judging event generates bonus points, 1 point for every 100 miles driven to the judging event. Thus if the event is 160 miles from a starting point and you drive to the event, you will get 1.6 bonus points. This helps to offset the point lost due to the A/C system installation.

The impact of Vintage Air on Flight Judging is different for different model years. For example on a 1965 the alternator is on the right side and must be relocated to the driver’s side to make room for the A/C compressor, while on a 1966 the alternator is already installed on the driver’s side and thus does not incur any additional deductions. Also to accommodate the relocation of the alternator on a ’65, the wiring harness must be modified and the voltage regulator and horn relays also must be relocated.

1 Additionally on some cars the alternator must be replaced with a larger unit to handle the power requirements

of the A/C system. The impact of a Vintage Air installation on some cars could be well over a 200-point reduction.

A car with Vintage Air installed is mathematically eliminated from consideration for the Duntov, McLellan or Hill Mark-of-Excellence Awards since to achieve these awards, cars must obtain a minimum final net score of 97.0 and millage points do not apply.

It should be noted, as mentioned in the NCRS judging guide, judging is subjective and different judges will score items differently. Good Luck.

Camaro, Chevelle and Nova Document Services

National Corvette Restorers Society is now providing certain information for 1965-72 Camaro, Chevelle and Nova models. The information (like what is provided for Corvettes) consists of the dealer code, dealer name, dealer location and the production date of the car. This will allow an owner to find where a Camaro, Chevelle or Nova was shipped and possibly open the door to finding more information about it.

A Camaro, Chevelle or Nova Shipping Data Report can be ordered only online at chevymuscledocs.com. Membership in NCRS is not required. The fee will be $50 payable by credit card or PayPal. You will receive via USPS a letter with the information which includes the NCRS official seal. In limited cases the dealer code is not available or readable and in this case a full refund will be made.
