As I write my report this week I am looking forward to the school’s annual swimming sports at the Avenel Pool. It should be a great day with an emphasis on fun, participation and team work. I will have my reflection on the Sports Day in next week’s newsletter. Last week I was impressed with how quickly students and teachers had returned to the core business of our school, teaching all areas of the curriculum, with a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy skills. This has continued this week, but I have also been impressed with the extra curricula activities that are offered at our school. We have a strong specialist program of Art and PE, students are able to take advantage of Music lessons, the community garden is being used as part of lessons and we offer Speech and OT services for students who have that need. Parent/Teacher Interview forms have been sent home. All students from grade 1-6 will participate in interviews. (Preps parents have their interview on a Wednesday as part of the prep assessments). We would like all families to attend an interview. Please return the form with your preferred time. If a form isn’t returned, a time will be assigned to you. If you are unable to attend on either of the days, please let the school know so an alternative time can be arranged. If you have any comments, questions or feedback, my email is [email protected]

OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ….

SUBJECT CONTRIBUTION – School Council have set the Subject Contribution for this year at $200 per student This amount is usually paid in Term 1 but other arrangements can be made if you are still recovering from Christmas and holidays! The subject contribution payment covers the cost of subject expenses and class materials which have been purchased by the school and will be distributed to students throughout the year. This contribution can be paid either by cash or EFPOS at the school or by direct deposit to the school account BSB 063 545 Account No 10076513. Please insert ‘sub cont’ and family name in the reference field.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS - Over the next few weeks we will be holding an election process to constitute our School Council membership for 2020. School Councils play a crucial part in the governance of Victorian state schools and being a part of School Council is a wonderful opportunity to make a lasting contribution to our school. We would strongly encourage all parents to consider nominating as candidates for election. This year we are seeking to fill 4 parent positions so there certainly is ample opportunity to become involved. If you would like to know more about the School Councillor role, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. ABSENCES – NOTIFYING OUR OFFICE. We remind all parents to please make contact with our office or submit an absence note via Compass if your child is absent from school. Department of Education procedures require us to make “same day” contact with families who have a child absent from school. In the case of unexplained absences, it is a departmental requirement that we obtain a parental explanation for the absence; accordingly, if your child is absent and we have not been advised of the reason, we will send home an absence statement for you to record the reason for the absence. CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUNDING (CSEF) – FOR NEW FAMILIES ONLY – Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. $125 per year is paid for eligible primary school students. Payments are made directly to the school and are tied to the student. To be eligible for the fund, a parent or legal guardian of a student attending a registered Government or non-government Victorian primary school must:

on the first day of Term one, or;

on the first day of Term two; a) Be an eligible beneficiary within the meaning of the State Concessions Act 2004, that is, be the holder of a Veterans

Affairs Gold Card or be an eligible Centrelink Health Care Card (HCC) or Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) holder, OR

Page 3: February Wednesday 19 thMonday 24 Thursday 27th Wednesday … · 2020. 2. 12. · February Wednesday 12th School Library Bus Avenel Swimming Carnival thWednesday 19 District Swimming

b) Be a temporary foster parent, and c) Submit an application to the school by the due date.

Parents who receive a Carer Allowance on behalf of a child, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF unless they also comply with one of (a) or (b) above. Parents or legal guardians are required to complete a CSEF application form available from the school office. Application forms should be completed and lodged with schools as soon as possible in term one, as payments are made from March onwards. However schools will be able to accept and process applications up until the end of term two each year. Families who were on CSEF last year are automatically rolled over. CONVEYANCE ALLOWANCE –Students who live 4.8 kilometres or more (closest point of property boundary in relation to the stop) from school or their bus stop, may be eligible for a conveyance allowance. Applications forms are available from the office and must be lodged with the School by Friday 14th February. BUS TRAVEL – Could parents please advise the days students will not be travelling on the bus so that we can update our records. Thank you. E-MAIL NEWSLETTER – If you would like to have your newsletter e-mailed to you so that you know that it will arrive home in a condition that you can read, please let the office know your e-mail address. SIGN IN BOOK – There is a sign in book in the office that we require all visitors to the school to fill out on arriving and leaving. For reasons of security, emergency management and volunteer insurance protection it is very important that you sign in and out when visiting the school for any length of time. HEALTHY SNACK TIME AT SCHOOL – Don’t forget to pack your child’s fruit or vegies for Healthy Snack Time. Water bottles are allowed in classrooms (water only). If you have excess fruit/vegies (maybe home grown) they would be greatly appreciated in the classrooms as some students do not have any healthy snack foods in their lunch boxes. RUBBISH FREE SNACKS/LUNCHES – In an effort to eliminate the amount of rubbish/litter at school we urge parents to avoid sending children to school with items in packets ie potato chips/biscuits. Instead put them in re-usable seal bags which children can then take home ready to be filled again the next day.
