Happy Birthday Boy Scouts!Th is February marks the 102nd Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. I like to collect old Scout-ing handbooks and I fi nd it interesting that while things like merit badges, camping equipment, and rank requirements change, the founding core principals of Scouting remain true. Leadership, values, education and community service is what Scouting does best for our members.

Th e Boy Scouts of America Offi ce of Research and Program Innovation recently released the results of a national study of boys in grades 1-12 and the impact that Scouting had on those in Scouts vs. non Scouts. Here are a few of the responses that I found interesting:

Not surprisingly, Scouts are much more active in volunteer causes and are also more than two times as likely to be a participant in their church youth group. Scouts are also actively planning for their future by saving to attend college.

I did fi nd the statistic on the playing of video games interesting. While I did not grow up in the “video game” generation and can honestly say that I just don’t get the appeal, it is obvious that video games are a huge connecting point for all boys.

As your units celebrate Scouting’s anniversary in February, I hope that you take the time to thank your Chartering Organization for the support they provide. Did you know that over half of the Packs and Troops chartered in the Heart of America Council are to religious organizations? Does your unit hold a Scout Sunday program? If your unit is sponsored by a religious institution are your weekly Troop or Pack meetings listed in the weekly or monthly bulletin?

As a volunteer leader if you ever doubt the positive impact you are having on the youth in your unit, just remember some of the statistics listed above. Th ank you for your leadership and commitment to the youth in the Heart of America Council.

Summit Leader to Highlight 2012 Commissioner College

Camp Naish makes a splash in protecting Kansas watersReclaimed, recycled and reused materials have helped make Camp Naish greener and our water cleaner.

Camp Naish is implementing multiple green projects through a combination of traditional Scouting ethics and a grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environ-ment and EPA. Th e Clean Water Neighbor Grant in the amount of $20,000 was awarded to Camp Naish for help with addressing water quality concerns in our local Water-shed community.

Best management practices helped Scout-ing programs like Leave No Trace, Soil and Water Conservation and Envi-ronmental Science, focus on relating choices with good stewardship practices.

Reclaimed gravel, wood and recycled pool water were three of the tools used by the Camp Naish Staff and volunteers to prevent soil erosion, stopping valuable topsoil from becoming a pollutant in streams and the Kansas River. Na-tive plants, local rock and native grasses provide fi nishing touches to completed water quality projects.

BSA Kicks-off Partnership with MLS On January 12 during the MLS SuperDraft in Kansas City, Major League Soccer and the Boy Scouts of America an-nounced a partnership. Scouts from the Heart of America Council were asked to help kick-off this new alliance

during the draft festivi-ties. Our Scouts were on stage during the offi cial announcement and posed for pictures with newly draft ed players.

Th rough this special col-laboration, Major League Soccer will use its net-work to support the BSA’s youth-focused program of athleticism, character, and leadership. Beginning in

March, Scouts across the country will receive special access to MLS games, players, coaches, and executives through unique on and off -fi eld programming designed specifi cally for packs, troops, teams, and crews.

Be on the lookout for ways your Scouting unit can team-up with Major League Soccer.

Council Welcomes New director of development

Eff ective January 1, Tammy Butterfi eld began her employment with the Heart of America Council as the new Director of De-velopment. In this role Tammy will be responsible for oversee-ing and supporting the fundraising operations of the council.

Tammy has extensive prior experience with the Girl Scouts as Development Manager and Grant Education Manager. Most recently she served as the Director of Development for Susan G. Komen — Race for the Cure. She is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in non profi t management.

2011 Top Popcorn SellerCongratulations to Nicolas Kost, the 2011 Heart of America Council top popcorn seller. Nicholas is a 2nd Class Scout from Troop 256 in the Trailhead District. Aft er selling a whopping $5,090 worth of popcorn, we asked him the secret to his success. “I am successful because I treat my customers with respect and make friends with them. I went selling as oft en as I could and I don’t get discouraged if somebody says no. I say, ‘thank you’ for your time, then I go to the next house.”

And his sales approach works. Nicholas has been in the top 5 of council popcorn sellers for the past 4 years. As the

council’s top seller Nicholas was named honorary coach at the UMKC basketball

game in December.

Bear resident Camp

Reservations for Bear Camp are done online on a fi rst come, fi rst serve basis. Online reservations will open on February 13 at 9:00 am. You are encouraged to register your whole den as a group if possible, but individual families can also sign-up to participate in Bear Camp.

Webelos resident Camp

Th e 2012 Webelos Camp Draw was held on January 14, 2012. More than 4,000 Webelos Scouts and leaders signed-up for a great sum-mer camp experience. Journey to Excellence: Community Service Hours

In 2011, 337 units logged 139,202 hours of community service throughout the Kansas City area. That is a huge step forward in tracking community service hours you perform. In 2012, we will continue to track service hours as part of the Journey to Excellence program. Our biggest goal will be to increase the number of units logging hours onto the JTE website.

2012 oA Winter Banquet

More than 400 Arrowmen attended the 2012 Winter Banquet on January 14 at Arrowhead Stadium. Highlights included the recognition of 27 new Vigil Honor members and the installation of the 2012 Tamegonit Lodge Officers. Four members of the lodge were also recognized with the Founders Award: Tom Bundy, Pam Clark, Jesse Miller, and Victor Tuttle. Ray Capp, National Order of the Arrow Chairman, served as the guest speaker and shared his vision of the role Arrow-men play in giving back to Scouting at the council, district, and unit level.

2012 Tamegonit Lodge dues

Each year, Tamegonit Lodge collects dues from each of its members to help pay for the operating costs of the lodge. For 2012, dues will be $10. In order to maintain your current status as a member of the OA by national standards, you must pay your dues annu-ally. Day Camp 2012The dates for the Big Muddy Cub Scout Day Camp are set! Start making plans to attend the 2012 Big Muddy Day Camp June 4-7 at Dyer Park in Odessa.

Roundtable The Big Muddy District Roundtable meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at the Lexington United Methodist Church at 7:00 pm. Please make sure your unit has a representative in attendance to pick up materials and to relay information. Having that person make a report at your unit committee meetings is a great way for your unit to stay on top of upcoming events.

District DinnerThe Big Muddy District Dinner will take place February 11 at the Wellington-Napoleon Community Building.

Gathering begins at 6:00 pm and dinner will be served promptly at 6:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to come out and show your support to all of the hard working lead-ers of the Big Muddy District. We will present awards to the most outstanding leaders in the district.

Investment in CharacterInvestment in Character keeps Scouting an affordable, ef-fective youth development program and provides a support system for the more than 18,000 volunteers and 35,000 youth in Scouting programs in the Heart of America Council.

The Heart of America Council is one of only a handful of councils around the country that are blessed with two world-class long-term camping facilities. The Investment in Character Campaign is a major funding source that helps us keep these camping facilities in tip-top shape.

Klondike Derby 2012The 2012 Klondike Derby will be held

February 17-19 at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation with the theme, “Winter Sur-

vival Skills.” Break out the sleds and winter gear and show us what you’re made of. Cost is $7 per participant, but $6 for those who register by February 10.

Day CampIt may be cold outside, but it’s time to start

thinking about Day Camp. Our theme this year is “Roll’n West.” Don’t miss out on the fun! Cubs

who attend a formal camp during the summer are twice as likely to stay in the program, so make sure every-one gets a chance to go.

The cost is $70 but if your scouts register before April 4 they can come for $55! Leaders, of course, are free.

Tell a friend and bring a buddy. Unregistered “buddies” can visit and have fun for a day of camp. Remember, Kindergarteners can sign up for Day Camp (and register as a scout). Check out the camping website for details www.hoac-bsa.org/Camping/CubScoutCamping/CubScoutDayC-amp.aspx.

Day Camp 2012It’s a new year and a new theme for Cub Scout Day Camp.

Day Camp 2012 — Wild West Cubs — will be held June 11 through June 14 at the Platte County Fairgrounds in Tracy, MO.

Day Camp Director Melinda McCombs and her trusty sidekick partner, Charlotte Sims, have been hard at work planning a great program for next summer. They are on-the-lookout for a posse to help them deliver a rootin’ tootin’ good program. If you are interested in helping out, drop Melinda a line at [email protected]. Online Day Camp registration is now open and the early bird price of $55 is available until April 4, 2012.

Investment in CharacterIt’s that time of the year when the Investment in Character campaign is in full swing. What is Investment in Character, you may ask? Investment in Character keeps Scouting an affordable, ef-fective youth development program. It funds the council’s infrastructure, or general operating por-tion of the budget, and provides a support system for the more than 18,000 volunteers and 35,000 youth in Scouting programs in the Heart of America Council.

The Heart of America Council is one of only a handful of councils around the country that are blessed with two world-class long-term camping facilities. The Investment in Character Campaign is a major funding source that helps us keep these camping facilities in tip-top shape.

When the Investment in Character Campaign visits your unit, please give generously. The Family goal for our dis-trict in 2012 is $98,500, an amount that is easily achievable if everybody participates. The return on your investment will benefit our society in ways that can’t be calculated. District Pinewood DerbyTime to REV ‘EM UP!

By now, most Packs should have completed their Pinewood Derby for the season. The winner in each of the five divi-sions in each unit is invited to participate in the District Pinewood Derby to see who has the fastest car. The top winners in each division will then compete for the grand championship.

The Derby will be held February 17 & 18 at Metro North Mall.

Tiger Cubs will begin racing on Friday evening at 6:30 pm and Wolf Scouts will start the competition on Saturday at 9:00 am.

Event Racemaster Jeff Cook says the first ever North Star District Pinewood Derby was on February 5, 1994. Since then, a total of 3,427 participants have competed in the history of the Derby.

Mark your calendars now, start planning your strategy, and have a great time at your unit’s Pinewood Derby. Then, in February, 2012, the top winners will come to-gether for the grand-daddy of racing — a weekend of fun and excitement.

The transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts is a time when we as Scout leaders have tremendous opportuni-ties. It is crucial that we work with parents to help them understand the importance and benefits of continuing on to Boy Scouts.

• RecognizegraduatingWebelosScoutsduringthepackBlue and Gold Banquet. Include the future Scoutmaster in the recognition ceremony. Consider providing a Boy Scout handbook to each graduating Webelos. During the months of January, February and March each pack, troop, team and crew in the Pelathe district is asked to provide time for a brief presentation at a Blue and Gold, Court of Honor or any other meeting well attended by families. This presentation explains how the Heart of America Council is funded and provides an opportunity for families to contribute. Please welcome and support your presenter as they do their crucial job. The Pelathe Dis-trict needs everyone’s support to reach our $23,250 Family Campaign goal.

Day Camp Amy Isenberg and Christen Coble are planning an exciting program based on a Western theme for the 2012 Cub Scout Day Camp. The camp will be held June 4-7 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Day CampCalling all Cubs and Webelos! Round up friends from your pack along with any classmates who are eligible to be Cub Scouts or Webelos, and ya’ll come to the Red-Tailed Hawk 2012 Day Camp at Lake Olathe, June 18-22. Day Camp this year is all about the Wild West — where you can find fun and adventure waiting for you at every turn. This is one camp you won’t want to miss!

Registration is due by the April Roundtable for the $55 rate. The rate increases to $65 after April 5, so sign-up early to get the best deal. All newly registered Scouts are $55 regardless of age.

Red-Tailed Hawk District Welcomes New District Chair

Please welcome Cathy Puls as the new district chairperson for Red-Tailed Hawk. Cathy has served on the district committee for four years, most recently in 2011 as the district vice-chair. She is also a committee member

with Troop 412, where her son Ryan earned his Eagle Rank in 2004. Cathy began her Scouting career in 1992 as a Tiger parent with Pack 3288 in Olathe, KS. She and her son joined Troop 412 in 1998, where she met her husband Ron Puls. During her tenure with Troop 412, Cathy served in various capacities including committee member, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Chair. Outside of traditional leadership roles, Cathy organized the Siege of Mafeking activity for the inaugural Red-Tailed

Upcoming Camping OpportunitiesNow is the time to start thinking about spring and sum-mer camping opportunities. Mark your calendars for April 27-28 and Webelo-Ree 2012. This is a great event that will help your Bear and Webelo Scouts prepare for their transi-tion into Boy Scouts.

Also on the horizon is the 2012 Trails West Cub Scout Day Camp June 11 through June 14 at the old Lake Olathe Golf Course. Online registration is now available, but act fast, the early bird fee of $55 only lasts until April 4.
