Florida Grasshopper Sparrows:Helping North America's Most

Endangered Birds Avoid Extinction

Tiny Singing Sparrow of Florida's Dry Prairies Making A Comeback

Why Florida Grasshopper Sparrows Matter

What We're Doing To Help Florida Grasshopper

Sparrows Survive

Less than a decade ago, there were believed to be less than 80 Florida grasshopper sparrows left in the wild. To save this species from extinction, biologists and experts from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Florida Fish

and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other agencies are working together on several recovery initiatives—including an effective captive rearing program. The partners have released dozens of captive-reared Florida grasshopper sparrows into the wild. The newly released birds appear to be doing well adapting to life on

the prairie. These releases are part of a strategic plan to guide management actions for this critically endangered species. The goal is to stabilize and grow the wild population over the next several years.

They're the voices of nature. The dads teach their sons to sing!

They indicate the health of Florida's dry prairie habitats.

They inspire us to connect with nature.

Restoring habitat

They disperse seeds and eat insects.

The song of the Florida grasshopper sparrow sounds much like that of a grasshopper. Males only sing a few hours a day during the breeding season to attract females and establish territory. Their song changes once they begin building a nest, which is how scientists are able to find their well-hidden homes hidden among the tall grasses of Florida's dry prairies.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE IS CRITICAL TO FLORIDA’S ECONOMY:

Lake Okeechobee's biodiversity is at its healthiest when the water level is between 12.5 to 15.5 feet deep.

These plants are essential for snails, the primary food source for snail kites. These same plants also provide cover and breeding grounds for the fish.

Each year, about 150,000 fishing trips generate an estimated annual economic impact of $49 million. Annually, about 500 bass fishing tournaments are held on the lake. Commercial fishing for catfish and panfish harvests about 1.5 million pounds a year.
