MAKING YOUR FUTURE
WHY AUCKLAND ?Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city and home to more than a million people from many
different cultures. Each culture has brought its own traditions making Auckland a truly
multicultural city. Wherever in the world you’re from, you will feel at home in Auckland.
Scenery, beaches, two beautiful harbours, holiday islands, outstanding food and wine,
great shopping and exciting nightlife: Auckland has it all. It’s not surprising that seven out
of ten new arrivals to New Zealand choose to make Auckland their home. New Zealand has
been recognised as the most peaceful country in the world by Global Peace Index.
WHY FIS ?
Social and Cultural ActivitiesFIS is a great place to make friends and learn about New Zealand. Students love our welcoming atmosphere and
they quickly find friends from all over the world. We make regular trips within Auckland and to other parts of the
country. FIS is involved in the community, taking part in events like the Parnell Art Snake which provide students
with an opportunity to practice their English in the real world.
Flexibility and Range of Course OptionsStudy anything from writing to business or prepare for that important examination. You can choose to study full or
part time, during the day or in the evening, on your own or in a class: whatever suits you best.
Quality TeachingAll our teachers are highly qualified native speakers with lots of experience teaching in New Zealand and overseas.
They understand students and know how they learn and what they need to succeed.
Bonus ClassesAt no extra cost, FIS offers a variety of optional extras to improve your English. Regular tutorials tackle tricky
grammar topics or help you learn about New Zealand culture. Coffee Club is a chance to have coffee and chat
informally with your teachers at a café, while Idioms in Use gives you an introduction to popular idioms and how to
use them.
Student SupportOur support staff can help you with everyday matters like where to buy the food you like or counsel you if you have
questions. In almost all cases,we will be able to speak to you in your own language.

Our full-time courses consist of General English in the
mornings plus your choice from a range of
specialised options in the afternoon.
General English
We cater for all levels from elementary upwards and
use internationally recognised textbooks. Teachers
ensure maximum student interest and impact.
Lessons cover grammar and vocabulary as well as
listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.
We recommend a homestay as the best way for
international students to improve their English and soak
up New Zealand culture. You become part of a Kiwi
family during your stay. Your room is furnished with a
bed, wardrobe, desk lamp and chair. You receive two
meals a day and three at weekends. The school can
arrange a homestay for you.
The weekly all-inclusive fee is $240, plus a one-off
arrangement fee of $200. If you are 18 or over you may
choose to go flatting, that is share a house or apartment
with others, splitting the rent and other expenses. Rents
vary depending on location and quality but the average
rent in Auckland is currently $320 per week. You would
also need to pay your share of bills and other expenses,
probably adding at least another $100 per person to
your costs. Backpackers and hostels are another option
for students over 18. You share sleeping
accommodation with others, often 10 or more, and use
shared bathroom and cooking facilities. This option
costs from $15 to $40 per night. Remember that food is
not included, probably adding about $100 per week to
your total cost.
WHERE CAN I STAY ? HOW DO I GET IN ?
WHAT CAN I STUDY?
FIS accepts students with any level of English, but you
will get the most from your study if you are at least
elementary level. On your first day at FIS we will give you
a placement test to find the best class for you. Most
options apart from General English require at least a
pre-intermediate level. To study Academic English or in
one of our examination preparation courses your
English must be at least intermediate standard. This
level is as assessed by our placement test. You must be
11 years or older to study at FIS.
Examination Preparation
We can prepare you for any of the major
internationally recognised examinations of English
including IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, FCE, CAE, CPE and
BEC. Our teachers will give you the skills and
confidence to get the best result you possibly can.
Afternoon OptionBusiness Plus
Business Plus gives you the grammar and vocabulary
and develops the skills you need to succeed in the
modern business world. Looking at issues such as
globalisation, leadership, innovation and change,
the course uses case studies for real world practice.
Writing
This course covers everything from creative writing,
business and personal letters and emails, to
academic essays. A step by step approach builds
your skills until you find yourself writing like a
profession.
English in the Media
English in the Media is an exciting new addition to
our afternoon options. Students study real-life
English from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and
the internet. The course will improve your
understanding of English and your ability to express
yourself as well as adding greatly to your vocabulary
and knowledge of idioms.
Discussion
Have your say and make your point! Discuss current
events, ideas and issues. This course gives you the
skills to express yourself and a range of interesting
topics to talk about.
Bonus ClassesCoffee Club
Coffee Club is another of our free after-school
activities. Students and teachers go to a café for
conversation.
Idioms in Use
Our weekly Idioms in Use class (which is also free)
gives you an introduction to several idioms and how
to use them. Using idioms correctly is what will
make you sound like a native speaker.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS CAN I GET? WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I GRADUATE?
InternshipThis is an opportunity for you to learn “real world”
English at the end of your course. FIS can arrange an
internship of four to six weeks for you in an English
speaking work environment. You will improve your
English and gain valuable work experience. To qualify
for an internship your course needs to be at least 12
weeks long and your English needs to be at least upper
intermediate level as assessed by FIS.
Further Placement Services
We work closely with many other tertiary institutions
and when you graduate from FIS we can help you
select the best one for further study to achieve your
goals.
Many students are interested in learning English for
their careers. Our internship programme is a great way
to practise what you’ve learnt in a real world situation.
It is a good bridge between learning English and
working in an English speaking environment. Students
who have taken part in the programme have had this to
say about it:
CAECAE is an exam for advanced users of English. This exam
is aimed at people who can use written and spoken
English for most professional and social purposes. CAE
gives you the confidence to use English in real situations.
FCEFCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written
and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level.
BECTo succeed in international business and commerce,
students need a good knowledge of English. Available at
three levels, the BEC tests are based on realistic business
tasks.
IELTS
IELTS is the International English Language Testing
System. Over one million people a year sit the exam. It
opens the door to tertiary study in New Zealand and
many other English speaking countries.
TOEFL
The TOEFL test is the most widely accepted test of English
in the world. A TOEFL score is required as an admissions
criterion by more than six thousand colleges and
universities worldwide.
TESOL
TESOL is a six week full time English language teaching
course accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority. It is a practical course aimed at international
students who have not taught before and provides
everything they need to get started on a career as an
English language teacher
TOEIC
More than 4.5 million people each year take the TOEIC test
to advance their careers. Thousands of corporations,
educational institutions and governments throughout the
world recruit, hire and promote based on TOEIC scores.
CPE
CPE is Cambridge ESOL's most advanced exam. It is aimed
at people who use English for professional or study
purposes. Your certificate is valid for life and recognized
around the world for business and education.
I improved my English and learned many important
things for my career and life in general. It was a great
opportunity.

“I really loved my time at FIS. It was very hard for me to assimilate to a different country as English is not my first language, but with FIS’ help I feel much better and I can communicate way more easily. The greatest thing was learning about different cultures with guys from all around the world and having fun! The teachers aren’t just great teachers but also really friendly and helpful. I would recommend FIS without hesitation to anyone who is keen to study English in Auckland. ”
