Federal Express officially began operations on April 17, 1973, with 389

team members. That night, 14 small aircraft took off from Memphis and

delivered 186 packages to 25 U.S. cities from Rochester, New York, to

Miami, Florida. Though the company did not show a profit until July

1975, it soon became the premier carrier of high-priority goods in the

marketplace and set the standard for the express shipping industry it

established. FedEx was founded by Fred Smith.

TNT Acquisition

On May 25, 2016, FedEx acquired TNT Express for approximately $4.9 billion.

TNT Express collects, transports and delivers documents, parcels and

freight to over 200 countries. The strategic acquisition broadens FedEx

portfolio of international transportation solutions. The move increases FedEx presence in Europe.

2016 Results

In 2016 FedEx achieved profit improvement goals with

a run rate of $1.6 billion of additional operating profit.

In FY16, FedEx reached new heights as one of the world’s unique enterprises.

Through disciplined strategy and execution, FedEx shareholders, team members and customers

benefited greatly from new solutions and higher revenues and profits, despite an environment

of low economic growth.

2017 Expectations

During 2017, FedEx expect improvements in the performance of all

their transportation segments to drive revenue and earnings growth,

excluding any year-end MTM adjustment and TNT Express financial results,

integration expenses and financing costs. Although FedEx improvement programs noted

above are completed, FedEx expect these programs to continue to contain expense growth

while improving revenue quality during 2017.

Challenges

FedEx will continue to witness stiff competition from its competitors- United Parcel Service

and Air Transport Services Group.

But the acquisition of TNT Express should give them the international footprint to stay a step

ahead of the competition.
