feedback from 2014 delegates powerlist foundation deloitte leadership programme
DESCRIPTION
"There is very little that I can add. During my flight back to the US I spent some time reflecting on last week’s wonderful event;* The intelligent, enthusiastic and engaged students* The great agenda which was masterfully executed* The hospitality and caring of our wonderful host Deloitte* The insightful and inspiring speakers* The amazing presentations that captured the thoughtful execution of the Challenge (forgive the cliché, “They are all Winners”). It was great to catch up with the returning mentors and buddies from last year as well as meeting the new alumni of 2014. I feel very proud to be associated with such a worthwhile enterprise and I like the students will not forget the experience. Thanks to All and Best Wishes"Tunde Bello - MentorTRANSCRIPT

Though I didn't know exactly what to expect, I knew it would definitely be worth the time to network with successful people, work on my teamwork skills and
be around students in similar positions to me:
23 Jul 29, 2014 11:38 PM
I feel it had a very big impact on my life and so I wanted to be a part of helping it be so impactful for others this year aswell. It also was an opportunity to be
inspired again, reconnect with the charity and get to know the new delegates.
24 Jul 29, 2014 6:55 PM To give back.

26 Jul 29, 2014 1:32 PM
After watching the previous years video and speaking to delegates from the previous year, I knew I would gain a lot from the programme and decided it was
not an opportunity I should miss out on
27 Jul 29, 2014 12:15 PM
Initially, for the obvious reason that most will probably say which is that its good to have your CV.
Although looking past that I thought it would provide a good experience to meet like minded people from possibly similar circumstances to yourself.
Secondly, to be inspired by people that had similar experiences and were now successful.
28 Jul 29, 2014 10:52 AM I knew some people that took part last year and they all said it would be a great experience
29 Jul 29, 2014 10:29 AM I had heard great things about it and wanted to be a part of it
30 Jul 29, 2014 10:08 AM Knowing I have a lot to share, and would like to empower, educate, and give self confidence to our future leaders.

32 Jul 28, 2014 6:34 PM
I wanted to develop my leadership skills and learn what it means to be a true leader. Furthermore I wanted to meet new like minded young black individuals,
as I feel that it is important that we as a people connect. I could not pass down the opportunity to meet inspiring people such as Ken Olisa, nor could I pass
down an experience with Deloitte.
33 Jul 28, 2014 4:41 PM
It helped me so much, I just wanted to give back. Plus, it's such a pleasure to be around the foundation, alumni and promising delegates. It's a week of
inspiration.
34 Jul 28, 2014 3:11 PM
To give back to the Powerlist Foudation as I felt I learnt a great deal last year and am very grateful. I was also excited by the prospects of being able to learn
more and network with more people.

39 Jul 28, 2014 8:59 AM
It was initially curiosity -- I was unsure of what to expect, but excited at the prospect of meeting other ambitious African / Caribbean individuals, having

1 Aug 20, 2014 3:23 AM It was an experience which will always stay with me!
2 Aug 16, 2014 3:36 PM It was simply amazing.
3 Aug 1, 2014 8:19 PM
The speakers were extremely inspiring and their personal stories were very interesting. As were the mentors. Whilst the opportunity to network with other
people of a similar age on a similar wavelength was great. The speakers and networking was the best part for me personally.
4 Jul 31, 2014 12:33 AM I found the key note speakers to be extremely insightful and motivating. The personal branding workshop was also very helpful.
5 Jul 30, 2014 11:36 PM I'm so grateful I had the chance to participate. I honestly can't express how useful the programme has been.
6 Jul 30, 2014 8:33 PM I believe I achieved all of my goals
7 Jul 30, 2014 4:01 PM Amazing speakers
8 Jul 30, 2014 1:34 PM Being taught by those who were experts in their field was amazing
9 Jul 30, 2014 12:05 PM
It was simply amazing! Meeting people who could offer advice and are helpful for future plans and aspirations was wonderful. Also enjoyed the team
challenge, love working with like minded people
10 Jul 30, 2014 11:55 AM I met so many amazing people, learnt about myself and my learning style and had the chance to build on my team skills. It was amazing!
11 Jul 29, 2014 1:39 PM
A great program, I am sure that the impact on the delegates will extend over their entire careers/lives. I got as much out of the program as the delegates,
their intelligence enthusiasm and insightfulness was truly inspiring.
12 Jul 29, 2014 1:32 PM I learnt a lot but most of all I was inspired by the key note speakers and my mentor
13 Jul 29, 2014 12:15 PM
I think it was one of the few if not only programme where the lessons actually became ingrained within me. So now, I actually will be able to network without
being shy etc.
The environment created by the follow delegates and speakers was supportive enough that I was able to push myself out of my comfort zone. For example I
volunteered to present during the group challenge something I would normally never do.
14 Jul 29, 2014 10:08 AM As above and also gave the external validation of what I am doing and thinking is the right thing
15 Jul 28, 2014 6:34 PM
I truly believe that I have become a better leader as a result of my participation. The business chemistry was one aspect which I will use for the rest of my
life.
16 Jul 28, 2014 9:28 AM
I was not at all surprised by the outstanding standard of the content and delivery of the presentations. I can see that this programme is a great precursor to
the students choosing their next steps after finishing their degrees. And I hope that it shows some of them that a career in professional services is not bad
either!!
17 Jul 28, 2014 8:59 AM
Not only expanding my network; I have found this program fantastic for helping to sculpt me into who I am today. It is an invaluable learning experience and
allows individuals to gain exposure to a variety of different individuals & experiences. Most importantly, at its core it has helped to equip me with the tools I
need to navigate the working environment, and to aspire to give back to my community.
18 Jul 27, 2014 12:21 PM Even though I attended it last year. it was still very insightful for me. I learnt new things, got reinspired and most importantly for me. I made new friends.
19 Jul 27, 2014 1:43 AM Fantastic speakers and team challenge
20 Jul 26, 2014 4:05 PM The programme has changed my way of thinking and also boosted my confidence. Now I have a "winner" mentality
21 Jul 26, 2014 10:36 AM It's always inspiring to hear speakers f similar backgrounds succeed as well as hearing the practical advice and learning about yourself in the workshops.

I will now make more of an effort to network with the individuals are come across. I will also try to look for other non-conventional ways of improving my

The buddies were great but I think they could be more organised in terms of moving the delegates from one block to another, from one room to lunch etc.
I think the speakers were great. I think more time should be allocated for the delegates to ask questions and less for the speakers to speak. I believe
learning is most effective when questions are asked.

4 Aug 14, 2014 10:55 PM
Sophie Chandauka
And Debo (the final speaker, cannot remember his name)
The talks as a whole along with the business chemistry sessions were amazing.
5 Aug 2, 2014 12:15 PM Tunde Bello- My mentor- very useful to see someone in a similar field and their progressDr DeboPam Hutchinso
6 Aug 2, 2014 9:27 AM Charles as I feel he was genuine and offered excellent advice
7 Aug 1, 2014 11:03 PM Dr. Gbadebo Ogunlami
8 Aug 1, 2014 9:38 PM Dr Gbadebo Ogunlami because I found his story extremely inspirational
9 Aug 1, 2014 8:19 PM
Dr. Gbadebo Ogunlami - as he focused a lot on the importance of the non-business life (health, happiness and so on) which was very refreshing. Whilst his
open-minded views, charisma and willingness to share his personal stories was also very inspiring.
10 Aug 1, 2014 8:15 PM Ken. Felt like he was leading a way to the top.
11 Jul 31, 2014 12:33 AM
I found all the speakers to be extremely insightful, however; I think Ken Olisa made the biggest impact on me. This was due to the fact that I felt his talk
helped me to put my life into perspective.
12 Jul 30, 2014 11:36 PM
I think the buddies role had a huge impact on me, as you could see how much it had helped all of them in their varying lives now. In addition to this I believe
Dr. Ogunlami was a huge inspiration (cliche I know) purely for the fact that he defined success as a personal measure rather than being status or monetarily
led.
13 Jul 30, 2014 9:16 PM Dr Gbadebo Ogunlami was a very good speaker, and hit the core of a lot of issues
and i loved the group challenge
14 Jul 30, 2014 8:33 PM
Professor Ogunlami, I felt that I had the most in common with him, and I feel that he could give me the best and most tailored advice to me given my
background and upbringing
15 Jul 30, 2014 4:01 PM The final speaker Depo, recognized and appreciated the most important aspects of life.
16 Jul 30, 2014 2:47 PM My mentor Tunde, as related most to him
17 Jul 30, 2014 2:35 PM
Sophie Chaunduka/ mentor programme.
As an aspiring solicitors of Southern-African decent, having Sophie as my mentor was extremely helpful. Since the event, I have spoken to Sophie regarding
the possibility of meeting for a coffee. To this end, the mentor and buddy system of the Conference was the most impactful aspect for me.
18 Jul 30, 2014 1:34 PM When all the mentors spoke about their journey. It was humbling listening to how far they had come along in life despite their different struggles.
19 Jul 30, 2014 12:27 PM Ken Olisa because of the heights that he has reached throughout his life
20 Jul 30, 2014 12:05 PM
The networking and working in teams for the challenge. Got to make connections with people I can now always go and seek advice from and made some
lovely friends
21 Jul 30, 2014 11:56 AM Ken, dr ogunlami and also Gabrielle

I think the team challenge had the most impact on me because I had 2 days to merge into a team with people I had never met and had the best time doing it.
I learnt so much from that.
I'd say the speaker who touched me most was Debo, I liked that he came from the angle of life and family rather than academic achievement or business. He
emphasized what all the other speakers has touched on about paying attention to the person you are becoming, being kind and giving back.
23 Jul 29, 2014 11:38 PM Working with the team of delegates was rewarding because I could see how my actions would motivate the team.
24 Jul 29, 2014 6:55 PM N/A
25 Jul 29, 2014 1:39 PM All speakers were outstanding
26 Jul 29, 2014 1:32 PM
ALL speakers had an impact but if I had to choose I would say Gbadebo Ogunlami, he was very inspiring and also Sophia.
Ad most of all the time with my team ad Mentor- Yvonne Thompson had the biggest impact to me
27 Jul 29, 2014 12:15 PM
I couldn't specify one speaker in particular because I think they all appealed to different aspects of me.
Pamela Hutchingson on being a confident enough woman to make her workforce adapt to her not the other way round. Ken Olisa and his focus on work, life,
ego, health and God balance. Tunde Bello's interest in the Biological Chemistry field completely crossover with mine so his experiences were particularly
interesting to me.
Not to mention people like Claude, Nadia and Charles who were all brave enough to become entrepreneurs in their own right.
28 Jul 29, 2014 10:52 AM Business Chemistry
29 Jul 29, 2014 10:29 AM Ken Olisa, because I was motivated by his interesting speech.
30 Jul 29, 2014 10:08 AM Did not get to see so can't comment
31 Jul 28, 2014 10:20 PM The presentations at the end with the students
32 Jul 28, 2014 6:34 PM
There are two speakers which impacted on me the most. Tunde Bello and Debo Ogunlami. All speakers were fantastic but the two I have chosen spoke with
such passion and really seemed to be pleased to meet people like us. Despite being amongst the oldest speakers I felt that they had the most energy and
enthusiasm, especially in personal discussions. Two massive characters that I will never forget.
33 Jul 28, 2014 4:41 PM Q&A with the Future Leaders - just very honest and informative conversation
34 Jul 28, 2014 3:11 PM Dr. Gbadebo as he was very relatable and inspiring.
35 Jul 28, 2014 2:31 PM
Ken Olisa's speech had the greatest impact on me as recently I had been sadly coming to the conclusion that the majority of business leaders were devoid
of a social conscience. Hearing the story of his work and his motto has given me renewed confidence in the upper echelons of business society and by
consequence humanity.
36 Jul 28, 2014 2:30 PM I really liked Kurt Burling's speech, I thought it's content was very insightful and he communicated really well .
37 Jul 28, 2014 2:26 PM
Pamela Hutchinson:
She was the most quoted keynote speakers in the team challenge presentations. Her honesty and positivity is what captured my attention. She was very
inspiring and I think her person determination illustrated this.
38 Jul 28, 2014 9:28 AM n/a
39 Jul 28, 2014 8:59 AM
Akintunde Bello / Dr. Gbadebo -- both speakers spoke with a confident honesty that I found easy to resonate with. The humility and drive shown by all
speakers was fantastic, but these two stood out clearly to me.
40 Jul 27, 2014 12:21 PM
I loved the panel disscusion, It was great to hear from young people who are doing wonderful things in society. I think that was the most interactive part of
the summer school. I felt everyone getting involved.
41 Jul 27, 2014 1:43 AM Gbadebo OgunlamiSophie ChanduakaPamela Hutchinson
42 Jul 26, 2014 4:05 PM The business chemistry because it made me realise some of my strengths and weaknesses that I paid less attention to.
43 Jul 26, 2014 11:38 AM
Ayo- mainly due to experiencing a more close knit learning experience. As the interaction was more personal when we interacted with him, when we first
met him.
However, all speakers were exceptionally of a high standard.. i was just being specific, to help you understand the most impact.
44 Jul 26, 2014 10:36 AM
I think all of the speaker sessions were great because you would pick up at least one useful tip which you can apply to your own life. I think just the general
atmosphere of having high achieving black students around you is very inspiring within itself.

I found them absolutely amazing. I had Kyomi and Senyo for my buddies and they were very friendly, offered us advice on structuring our group discussions
etc and out two mentors Ayo and Sophie were invaluable!
2 Aug 1, 2014 8:19 PM Very helpful and hopefully will be very helpful in the future too as they're good links to have
3 Jul 30, 2014 11:36 PM They helped to polish and refine all the ideas we had as a group as they were able to look at the presentations almost objectively.
4 Jul 30, 2014 8:33 PM Piers was largely absent unfortunately and seemed largely disinterested. Charles, ife and Rachel however were great and contributed a lot
5 Jul 30, 2014 4:01 PM it was good guidance throughout the programme
6 Jul 30, 2014 11:55 AM
I found my mentors and buddies extremely useful. My buddy in particular, Leandra, was from my university so we connected on that level and she had lots of
advice about the application process, numerical tests etc and how to make the most out of 3rd year!
7 Jul 29, 2014 12:15 PM Great in getting constant insight into how they found the programme and what they gained from it and steering us in the right direction. Especially Peter!
8 Jul 29, 2014 10:52 AM
The buddies were great but I feel sometimes the mentor was counterproductive as we were unable to make much headway with the task when the mentor
was around
9 Jul 29, 2014 10:08 AM More for the mentees to have confidence that if someone else their age has done it so can they
10 Jul 28, 2014 6:34 PM
Buddies were great in helping to consolidate the experience and give useful tips. The mentors were also fantastic but I felt that they could perhaps have
offered a little more in terms of getting to know us. I do respect that they are all exceptional very busy individuals which might have been why.
11 Jul 28, 2014 2:31 PM
The wealth of experience brought to our team by the mentors and buddies was evident by the work we produced. Furthermore have buddies and mentors
from other groups around the programme that we could talk to during the day provided us with a variety of insights into different professions and
experiences.
12 Jul 28, 2014 2:30 PM The mentors and buddies were able to share the experiences they had when they were our age, therefore they were able to give us relevant advice.
13 Jul 28, 2014 8:59 AM Of course...I may be slightly biased.
14 Jul 27, 2014 1:43 AM Necessary
15 Jul 26, 2014 4:05 PM It gave me the opportunity to have a one-on-one chat with these mentors and buddies. Now I can keep in touch with them
16 Jul 26, 2014 11:38 AM
It was a bit unfortunate, that Sophie never interacted with her group as much, as we only managed to speak to her for like 45 mins over the four days. I
understand she had work commitments, however.
Ayo, senyo and kymoni were great.

1 Aug 20, 2014 3:23 AM Some people noted that for the past two years the winning team were the last to present. But I thought the judging was fair.
2 Aug 16, 2014 3:36 PM Nothing I can think of.
3 Aug 15, 2014 12:27 PM Give real food (jollof rice and chicken). That was the main issue.
4 Aug 14, 2014 10:55 PM Better food (cheeky I know :-) )
5 Aug 2, 2014 12:15 PM Just the food, perhaps hot food :)
6 Aug 2, 2014 9:27 AM To make the program longer and to improve the food service
7 Aug 1, 2014 11:03 PM The Business Chemistry was amazing, the other workshop on team work however, was not.
8 Aug 1, 2014 9:38 PM Quite honestly, none. I think it was amazing!
9 Aug 1, 2014 8:19 PM
Lunch (not a big issue), and the team forming/building activity was a bit boring. However everything else was amazing and there were no major issues,
these are just minor and not too serious.
10 Aug 1, 2014 8:15 PM Nothing. Maybe the food if possible.
11 Jul 31, 2014 12:33 AM I think the lunch could have been better.
12 Jul 30, 2014 11:36 PM I think having a few buddies speak at the opening e.g Claud would allow the delegates to understand a lot more about how the course shapes you.
13 Jul 30, 2014 9:16 PM to have hot food for lunch
14 Jul 30, 2014 8:33 PM
My only real gripe was the lunch. I'd either improve the lunch, or allow delegates to go out for lunch. I didn't understand why delegates were encouraged to
buy domain names. I was also a bit unsure of the effectiveness of delegates business cards when most have LinkedIn, Facebook and phones that they're
constantly on
15 Jul 30, 2014 4:01 PM none. very amazing event
16 Jul 30, 2014 2:47 PM Not much the program was great, but the food could've been improved
17 Jul 30, 2014 2:35 PM Readjustment of the Leadership skills session on Day 3. It was a very long session and at times unengaging.
18 Jul 30, 2014 1:34 PM
Earlier start on the first day so that there's a time slot for getting to know your mentor on a personal level than just having them help you on the project.
- better choice of lunch
19 Jul 30, 2014 12:27 PM Create more awareness of the event
20 Jul 30, 2014 12:05 PM None. Keep up the good work.
21 Jul 30, 2014 11:56 AM
A bit more organised in transitions from one building to another
Better refreshments
More speakers from different fields, for example more speakers in media
22 Jul 30, 2014 11:55 AM
Food! I understand it needed to be light to keep us awake but I think safer choices like ham sandwiches etc would have been better.
Apart from that it was amazing. The range of speakers we had was great and I think having previous delegates/recent graduates speak to us was very
useful. I think to improve maybe a bigger panel of recent grads who are successful would be great!
23 Jul 29, 2014 11:38 PM
I think some delegates were worried about their websites and business cards and what they should've included in them. It may have been good to highlight
that it was more for personal branding or to enhance their netwrking and would not be used directly within a session.
24 Jul 29, 2014 6:55 PM Having all the information need displayed on the website.
25 Jul 29, 2014 1:39 PM Can not think of any.
26 Jul 29, 2014 1:32 PM
Everything was great, but maybe for delegates to be a little more informed for whats in store for them. I feel like I showed up still wondering what the week
would have in store

2014 Powerlist Foundation Leadership Programme
27 Jul 29, 2014 12:15 PM
The food selection.
One thing as well which I picked up on was that although obviously this cant be helped I found that many of the speakers kept on emphasizing the fact that if
you came from a poor background you could still make it. Whilst I understand that this is applicable for some people at times I felt that it enforced one of the
stereotypes of Afro-Caribbean people of being from lower socio-economic class although this isn't always the case. Whilst this didn't deter from the power
behind the speakers messages I think it would be nice to also include speakers from different socio-economic backgrounds. This may not be so easily
feasible but it would be a nice touch.
28 Jul 29, 2014 10:52 AM It would have been nice to do some general ice breakers with the group as a whole right at the start
29 Jul 29, 2014 10:29 AM The Quality of Food
30 Jul 29, 2014 10:08 AM Loads, but would want to discuss separately
31 Jul 28, 2014 10:20 PM
More brand involvement with a focus on a key topic or issue specific to a specific vertical
e.g. How is digital affecting the world of retail and how would you advise a fashion brand to change their approach
32 Jul 28, 2014 6:34 PM
Not necessarily an improvement, but I truly benefited from the question and answer session with previous year Powerful Media top students. This was done
very well this year, but I think that a slightly longer session would have been great.
33 Jul 28, 2014 4:41 PM
Some of the delegates said that the how to lead teams workshop wasn't as engaging as the other and that they didn't take much from it. Maybe revise for
next one.
34 Jul 28, 2014 3:11 PM
Ensure that all the mentors that sign up are available for as much as possible throughout so that every group has a fair chance. Also, we learnt about the
importance of networking but it would be interesting to learn how exactly we can keep that network.
35 Jul 28, 2014 2:31 PM
More variety at lunch. While the food provided may be representative of a 'corporate lunch' which we may have to experience when we embark on our career
journey, for the moment it was an unwelcome shock to the system which had detrimental effects on energy levels and alertness.
36 Jul 28, 2014 2:30 PM
Perhaps set up a group for the Powerlist Alumni before the leadership academy takes place. For example, for next year, a Powerlist Foundation, Deloitte
Leadership Academy 2015 Alumni Facebook group can be set up, giving delegates the opportunity to network with each other before the event.
37 Jul 28, 2014 2:26 PM
The Lunch was not filling.
Since the days are so long need to be kept adequately nourished.
Light biscuits and fruits with the tea/coffee and water breaks would be helpful too.
38 Jul 28, 2014 9:28 AM
I only saw the last part with the presentations but from the energy and quality of the output, I think the programme continues to build year on year to what we
created in 2011.
39 Jul 28, 2014 8:59 AM N/A
40 Jul 27, 2014 12:21 PM
The buddies were great but I think they could be more organised in terms of moving the delegates from one block to another, from one room to lunch etc.
I think the speakers were great. I think more time should be allocated for the delegates to ask questions and less for the speakers to speak. I believe
learning is most effective when questions are asked.
41 Jul 27, 2014 1:43 AM Food - allow delegates to eat out, even if it means the inconvenience of taking off security passes and redistributing them after.
42 Jul 26, 2014 4:05 PM The programme should be a bit longer than 3.5 days. Maybe a full week will be better
43 Jul 26, 2014 11:38 AM
If mentors assigned to the group attend all days with their teams. if they couldn't, i think they should be given another title such as 'advisor' so the mentees
wouldn't expect too much from them. But it would be great if anyone assigned as a 'mentor' attended all the days, as it helps the delegates build a real
relationship.
As i feel that i can only refer to sophie as a mentor only by title but not by the relationship. (However, i do appreciate she has other commitments)
44 Jul 26, 2014 10:36 AM
Not much the only issues I heard about were the food and how some of the delegates were hungry. If we are bringing them in early in the morning it would be
nice to have something for them during the day.
