Feeding Habits of Animals

Feeding HabitsFeeding Habits of Animals

All organisms need food for their growth and development. Feeding habits differ from animal to animal. They also depend on the availability of food in the habitat.

ClassificationFeeding Habits of Animals

There are three main classes in which animals can be classified on the basis of their eating habits – herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

HerbivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Herbivores are the animals that eat only plants. They have sharp front teeth called incisors for biting and broad teeth called molars and premolars for chewing food.

HerbivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

As a result of their plant diet, herbivorous animals typically have mouthpartsadapted to rasping or grinding.

HerbivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Herbivores are anatomically and physiologically adapted to eating plant material, for example foliage.

HerbivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Their teeth and digestive systems are developed to grind and digestvegetable matter. Cow, goat, deer and giraffe are some herbivores.

CarnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Carnivores are those animals which feed on the flesh of other animals.

CarnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Carnivores meaning 'meat eaters' derive their energy and nutrient requirements from a diet consisting mainly or exclusively of animal tissue, whether through predation or

scavenging.

CarnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Carnivores have sharp and pointed teeth called canines that help them to tear flesh. They have strong molars for chewing the flesh and bones.

CarnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Lion, tiger, cat and fox are carnivores.

OmnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Omnivores are those organisms that eat both animals and plants. Examples of omnivores include bear, crow and squirrel.

OmnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Some will hunt for their food and others are scavengers who eat dead matter. Most omnivores eat eggs.

OmnivoresFeeding Habits of Animals

Omnivores are often opportunistic, general feeders that lack carnivore or herbivore specializations for acquiring or processing food, but which nevertheless consume

both animals and plants.

ScavengersFeeding Habits of Animals

Scavengers feed on dead animals and plant materials present in their habitats.

ScavengersFeeding Habits of Animals

Scavengers play an important role in the ecosystem by consuming the dead animal and plant material.

ScavengersFeeding Habits of Animals

Crow, hyena and vulture are scavengers.

This presentation is a result of my experiences while I was helping out my son with his school assignments and project work. I am happy to share this with other students and their parents. Hope you find this informative and useful. Thank you.
